Erie Canal[edit]

I always consider that the absence of a welcome notice should be taken as a compliment - it means that your contributions don't look like those of a newbie. However there is one thing. Please put ", Erie Canal" or whatever after your lock and bridge articles. You edited Lock 13, Erie Canal after I had moved it and did not get the message.

I am sure the reason is obvious - there must be at least twenty Lock 13s in England about which people might want to write articles. -- RHaworth 05:53, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do wonder if you have actually read any of my comments:

You created an article called Bridge 8. This is total arrogance - Bridge 8 of the Erie Canal is not the only Bridge 8 in the world. It is not necessarily the only Bridge 8 which will qualify for a Wikipedia article.
You reverted my edits to category assignments. Now I will spell it out slowly for you. If you use [[category:Erie Canal| ]] then all articles categorised thus will be listed lumped together at the start of the category - and I believe, in random order. If you use [[category:Erie Canal|Lock 05]] or [[category:Erie Canal|Bridge 04]] then the articles will be listed in sensible positions and with 13 coming after 9.

Also we do not create duplicate articles like Rexford Bridge and Bridge 8. We create one article, then if alternate titles are wanted, we use #redirect [[title of substantive article]]. -- RHaworth 08:20, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Roger, I read your comments, and thank you for spelling things out for me slowly as I am a slow reader, and new to this. You are helping me find my way. I Do Like the category titles when they fall in order and was surprised and disappointed when they showed up out of order, especially in this day and age of greater computer power. It was not my intention to create duplicate "Bridge 8" articles; I was trying to re-name the article under a name scheme that would allow the names to fall into order numerically rather than alphabetically, to avoid having them out of sequence. I am vaguely aware that there could be another "Bridge 8" out there in the world. Did you edit each article to get them back in order? If so, then thanks. "Do I make my self clear?" Excellent. No sir, I would never call you Mr Arrogant. You don't need to ask did you edit - you have access to full details of my edits just as I can see your edits. And the edit history for each article will show you down the last comma what changes were made. For example my contributions shows:

template[edit]

Someone added some horrible "go to" links to some of the Erie Canal articles - a) we do not use "go to" or "click here" in Wikipedia, b) they were in one direction only!

Taking my lead from {{ThamesCrossings}} which is used in all these articles, I have created {{Erie Canal}} and used it in Lock 7, Erie Canal and in Bridge 8, Erie Canal.

The idea is that by clicking on these links the user can make a virtual trip up or down the canal! I am not sure how to combine bridges and locks in the boxes and still preserve the inter-lock distances. Perhaps you will have some bright ideas now that I have dropped the hint of using a template. -- RHaworth 08:18, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yup! I did a double take when I was typing that one out. But I just report what I see; take a look at the sign:

I added the horrible go to links, and Yes, the idea being a virtual journey up the canal from lock to lock. Then I noticed the more elegant way the crossing on the Hudson River page were layed out. I tried that out as a template, but it didn't work the first time and I didn't get back to it. I see your templeate is pretty much the same thing. Looks good. However, I prefer to move from lower to higher Lock numbers going from left to right across the page, even though when viewing a map the low numbers are to the right. Hummmm...I loaded in a better version of the "SignSaysSo.jpg". The first one I never intended to be in the article, it was taken just to get the info from the sign, so it's not very easily read. I took another slightly better photo today. The sign is 4 feet from the edge and faces the lock so you'd have to stand in the middle of the lock to get a good photo of it. Anyhow the better one shows up here in user talk, but when I click on it, it links back to the old hard-to-read one. I did add the licence tag. Sugggestions? Image confusion. Two things: I have noticed apparent reversion to old versions when I re-upload images. It is a browser thing in part. Sometimes it is not suffcient to click reload for the page - you have to open the image by itself and reload that. You did have image:SignSaySo.jpg (one s less) which did have a licence tag and which I have now deleted. You have never tagged SignSaysSo. Please tag it - I could do it for you but it is better that you do it so it has your name in the edit history.

Duplication of next lock distances. I have just seen your edit summary: It's redundant, but I'm rigidly sticking to my Format which begins with info from the Lock Signs (after I did today's revert). I disagree with you but am not going to get into an edit war. Here's a suggestion - rearrange the template as an imitation of the lock signs - including, elevations and lift and the logo. If you can get square on to one of the signs and get a decent photo of the logo, would that be a copyvio? In any case a tag of {{Non-free fair use in|any article about the Erie Canal}} would probably be OK.

Using == around the top line. Here I am firm:

Roger, I was confused about this last part - "We do not do it"- until I saw your Edit summary note: "I repeat we DO NOT create the first line as a title... Agreed.

I'm fond of the Signs at the locks, and was hoping to recreate that with eacy Lock article. It is a good idea to create the sign, but I'm not sure I'm cleaver enough to format something like

that in a manner that I'd be happy with. I've yet to find a way to make Tab stops with text. I don't have enough energy to get into an edit war.

The Town of Niskayuna is in Schenectady *County* (Co). So is the City of Schenectady. And both are indeed very far away from Colorado (CO). I think I like that "sign template". I'll have to look at that closely very soon, said Howard C. Ohlhous 07:06, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The more I look at your photo of the sign, the more I think their sign is capable of improvement. Just the simple matter of the redundant comma between Schenectady and Co. I have taken Schenectady out of the template because the canal passes through several counties. I have uploaded a new version of the logo - not only is the file a tenth the size but the background is now transparent. -- RHaworth 09:17, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh man. I added Locks 11 and 12 last night. Somehow a page called "Lock, Erie Canal" was added. It shows up on the list under 'Pages in "Erie Canal" ' as "Lock , Erie Canal" without the number "11" in there. How do I make that go away? I'm left befuddled. H.C. Image:Lock E2 Aerial.jpg[edit]

Hi. When you uploaded Image:Lock E2 Aerial.jpg, you did not specify complete source and copyright information. Another user subsequently tagged it with {{GFDL-presumed}} and, for some time, it has existed on Wikipedia under the assumption that you created the image and you agreed to license it under the GFDL. This assumption, however well-meaning, is not legally sufficient and the tag is being phased out. Images using it are being deleted.

This image has been tagged for deletion and will be deleted in one week if adequate copyright information is not provided.

If you, personally, are the author of this content, meaning that you took the photograph yourself or you created the chart yourself (and it does not use any clipart that you did not create), please retag the image with a free image copyright tag that correctly describes your licensing intentions, usually {{GFDL-self}} or {{PD-self}}.
