Art editing[edit]

Hello! I saw your post on the Teahouse. As you can see, it's complicated. If you have any questions about editing, let me know! Personally my view (opinion) of a COI at the museum level would be:

  • you have a COI if you are being paid to edit/promote topics directly related to your employer
  • you do not have a COI if you are editing topics you're interested in but are not connected to the Museum.

That said, I think it's very useful for museum employees to contribute. A museum adding information about artists in its collection is doing something good, as long as it is not overtly promotional. That's just my opinion. Policy is a bit cloudy in this area as museums are not the same as for-profit corporations, for which the COI policy was designed. I think it all might come down to how helpful and neutral your edits are, and whether or not people disagree with them! In any case, welcome. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 01:15, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ThatMontrealIP: Hey, thanks so much for the kind words! It does seem super confusing, which I was not expecting. I feel like technically I do have a COI, since the museum would like me to work on articles related to their collection. Which, however, seems reasonable! This is how scholarship happens, and it doesn't exactly seem the same as promoting a for-profit company (as you said). It's weird too, because I was reading the page about how GLAMs should consider hiring Wikipedians to help with their Wiki strategy, and it straight-up said that if that seems like too much commitment, consider just allowing employees to edit Wikipedia entries at work. So!!?
Anyway, I guess my plan is just to propose changes, or a new article, and see what people say. Right? I'm hoping that if the article is neutral and scholarly and not promotional fluff, people will be OK with it. I guess I'll find out. Thanks again!Onecentlife (talk) 02:30, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you have questions. I can think of two editors who work for museums/collections that are making excellent contributions: User:Bgourgeot, with Souls Grown Deep, and User:Natharchives, who works for the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Neither have really had COI problems, as they are neutral in their editing, and are both making positive contributions. This is perhaps the key: editors with COI are allowed to contribute, but their edits cannot be promotional. Factual, neutral edits are allowed; pushing agendas or promotion is not. (See this example by a museum's promotional agent for what we are not looking for) You could perhaps email Bgourgeot for advice, as they are in a similar situation to you.
