Ian Svenonius article[edit]

Hi Ooooops. It appears we have a bit of a conflict on our hands concerning the Ian Svenonius article, so in the interest of avoiding an edit war, I think it would be best to figure this out here rather than you deleting content and me reverting your deletions ad naseum. So, concerning the few issues we seem to disagree on:

"Emo" is not an inherently pejorative phrase, it has merely gained such connotations recently (only since around 2002, according to the emo article). To quote directly from the article linked above: "Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations of music, linked loosely but with common ancestry." Although modern day emo has little to do with Nation of Ulysses' sound, the band was an important factor in the genre's early days, specifically since the genre arose from Washington D.C. (where NoU was based) and from the Dischord Records label (to which NoU were signed). Check out Emo music - The first wave (1985-1994) for more of an explanation.

As for including a short biography section on an musician's/artist's page, I don't know if you saw my post on the Discussion page, but to reiterate, "As far as I know, this is pretty standard practice of Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. Just for a few random examples, see Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain, and Melissa Auf der Maur." The first two examples have both been rated as Good articles, the last is at the same assessment level as the Svenonius page (Start-class). All of them have a Biography section of some sorts, in fact the first two have much larger entries than Svenonius'.

I have never seen any source that says Svenonius is from Chicago, have you? I have however seen a source which says he is from Hyattsville, Maryland. This makes sense considering the same source says he went to Northwestern High School (in Hyattsveille, Maryland) and that his father worked at University of Maryland, and that both of these places are just outside of Washington D.C. See a pattern here? If I am mistaken please let me know, but back it up with a source.

Dear Drewcifer3000,Thanks. Though the term emo may or may not be pejorative, whatever it has come to mean doesn't seem to apply to NOU. "Emo" is short for emotional or "emotional hardcore," and describes groups with lyrics of personal introspection. Nation of Ulysses lyrics on the other hand are completely impersonal and might even be described as "camp." Themes revolve around gang ritual and teen themes lifted from early 60's doo wop and girl groups (Today I met the Girl I'm Going to Marry, Cool Senior High School, A Kid Who Tells On Another Kid Is A Dead Kid, SOund Of Young America) and political radicalism (NOU Secret Plan To Destroy America) or throwbacks to punk (Channel One Ulysses) and soul themes (You're my Miss Washington, DC). It sounds like you know what you're talking about, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one. I believe the original sentence was: "Svenonius' first band, Nation of Ulysses formed in 1988, were a seminal influence in the early days of emo music." So, how would replacing the world "emo" with the word "post-hardcore" sound? Seems like a good compromise to me. But that still doesn't clear up the biographical issue... Thanks for the respnose. Ian Svenonius edit war[edit]

Hey Oops. It appears we have an edit war on our hands concerning the Ian Svenonius article. So, in the interest of avoiding any further conflict, I've asked for a third opinion on the matter (all the way at the bottom). I'm not exactly sure how this works, but I assume we'll hear from a third party soon regarding their opinion on the matter. To complicate things slightly, I'm going on vacation on August 5th for two weeks, so if we are unable to resolve the dispute by then I don't mind removing myself from the discussion and letting things work themselves out until I return. Ian Svenonius article[edit]

I just undid your edits of Ian Svenonius. Although I'm assuming good faith in your edits, such huge, article-wide revisions should be discussed on the talk page. Also, it appears that you still have an issue with the biographical information in the article, despite the third opinion we received on the issue. If you really think that information shouldn't be there, we could bring the issue to a more formal venue, but I'm pretty sure we'd get the same result. I'll let you make that decision, though. Finally, the article has recently been granted Good article status, and is currently being reviewed for Featured article status the highest degree of quality a wikipedia article can gain. So far I've gotten mostly good reviews of the article, bio information, DJ information and all. Since the article is still in the FA process, I would very much appreciate it if you tone down the massive edits, since an edit war might jeopardize its candidacy. It also appears you've made some edits to the NoU discography, some which are appreciated, but others of which genuinely confuse me. I'll bring those issues up on the talk page, however, as these are less serious as the others. Please, if you have any questions, comments, or are just generally dissatisfied my actions or the article in general, leave a note on my or the article's talk page. Thanks for your understanding. Honestly, I kinda saw that coming! Well, that kind of changes everything, huh? =) Although I take my edits on Wikipedia pretty seriously, I also don't want to affect the people that I'm writing about in any way. So if you're uncomfortable, I'm uncomfortable. I'll take the bio stuff down, though you should be aware that that information is out there already (the Sassy interview): I only put it up there because I was able to find it. As for the NoU AMG write-up, I'll try and take that stuff down too. Also, thanks for some other edits of yours to clarify a few misunderstandings I've had (like some stuff on the NoU discography page). As you can tell, I'm a really big fan of most of your work, and I guess I've been expressing that by doing my best to improve the articles about it all.
