@OrchardBreeze: I worked full time as well. Taking classes online is very interested. I will say this is my first semester in a graduate class and the course is fascinating, but also challenging as we progress through the course schedule. Last Additions to FOG

Again, thanks for your recent work on FOG. However, most, if not all, of what you added had more to do with graffiti and less to do with FOG. While there are maybe a couple of parts that you could use in the article, it was more like original research than a WP article. Remember additions should be directly related to the subject of the article, otherwise you're writing an essay, not a WP article. NMAC 5108 reflective essay

Wikipedia applies strict practices in an effort to provide valid, valued and research-supported information to its readers. This stringent approach was the most surprising discovery during the NMAC 5108 coursework and Wiki Education lessons. During my undergraduate studies, I had previously been led to believe that the website content garnered validity only one level above that of a Facebook post from an opinionated contributor. Wikipedia pages are not perfect, as I learned during the critique of other articles. Each page, however, continually improves through other editors like me and my NMAC 5108 classmates. Together we resolve errors ranging from grammar and punctuation; to aesthetics and adding visual elements and styling; to organizing content in meaningful ways; to linking to other related Wiki pages toward increased viewership; to validating information and supporting with only academic resources.

I made numerous contributions to the FOG article, but struggled with understanding what appropriately contributed to Mailer's essay and the purpose of the wiki article. I sought to answer the questions I’d had and include references I found useful to understand the text, but failed to contribute according to the guidelines. I appreciate the feedback I received, but am still not sure I completely understand the nuances of allowable contributions. Though many of my contributions were removed, I feel strongly that I demonstrated my ability to apply more advanced coding techniques like quotation boxes, images, and cross-linking to other Wiki pages. I’ve learned that cross-linking is especially important to increase viewership and create a strong Wikipedia presence for an article.

I also struggled with what I felt was an overwhelming task to create a new article. After all, what do I have to add that hasn’t already been covered? I added summary information about Mailer’s novel Ancient Evenings and planned to contribute some of my deleted content about the early styles of graffitists, but the Graffiti page was semi-protected. I really tried to “be bold” as advised, but ultimately ended the experience feeling intimidated.

Sorry if this experience was ultimately intimidating for you. I realize it can be—especially at the beginning. Usually, however, with consistent editing and persistence, you get it after a time. I can see why you might be frustrated with your additions to FOG, but as I explained, most of that seemed to be original research which we can't do as editors on Wikipedia. Why was creating a new article "an overwhelming task"? I agree that it's some work, but you also had the option of editing an existing article. Thanks for the thoughts; you should have used subheads and proper formatting (like italics and links) when needed. Did you write this quickly? —Grlucas (talk) 16:25, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
