A few notable women

Hello, I saw a message that you reviewed a redirect page of mine, and took a look at your user page.
I think the imbalance of articles on men v. women on WP is not just the result of systemic bias on WP, but also of systemic patriarchal bias in most human cultures on this planet in documented history. Nevertheless, my sign happens to be Libra, and I would like some more balance, to I decided to drop you a line and 2 cents.

  • Pilot James Thain plaid a central role in, and also was a tragic victim of the Munich air disaster, but according to the Mayday documentary series episode 77 (season 11, #5), he received crucial help from his wife Ruby, one of the first women to get a first class honours degree in Chemistry, Physics and Maths — see http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4ub0bf at 34:00.
  • A Dutch documentary on current efforts towards human immortality featured not only Linda Chamberlain from cryonics org Alcor and Sci-Fi writer and former professor Kathleen Goonan, but also BioViva CEO Liz Parrishredirect page only !! — also the world's 1st person to undergo genetic telomere (r)elongation treatment, in an attempt to counteract ageing. If you're interested the docu can be viewed online here – although the voice-overs are in Dutch, all persons in it are interviewed in English (audio) with Dutch subs. I'd say at least 80% of the whole thing is English-spoken.

Regards, --GeeTeeBee (talk) 22:00, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

  • @GeeTeeBee: Thanks for taking an interest in my editing. I think I'll continue my current pattern of responding to each month's Women in Red challenge with one or more articles; watching my ridiculous-large watch list and taking appropriate action; sorting stubs, especially those filing under "P"; doing a bit of WP:NPP on redirects in particular; and generally editing as and when the mood takes me, creating articles on topics which interest me or which seem to be inappropriately red links and where I can find Reliable Sources. Happy Editing. PamD 09:02, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
Allright ! Happy Editing, --GeeTeeBee (talk) 09:05, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Elliot James Dowel Colvin

FYI, I'm going to try to resurrect Elliot James Dowel Colvin as we did with G. E. C. Wakefield. It seems clear that Colvin meets notability though the existing article needed WP:TNT. Fiachra10003 (talk) 18:23, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Todah rabbah for your excellent work on this article. I am happy about simplifying the disambiguation. I put the longer form because I wasn't sure whether the simpler form would suffice.

I put a note in the talk page for the article to the effect that I wasn't getting any clear results in the Wikipedia function for the ISBN. Therefore I included the Amazon link to make sure that the article didn't get deleted (whether by a robot or by a hostile editor) for lack of at least one authenticating reference.

Your work has improved the article in some very useful ways. I haven't had much time recently to work on Wikipedia, and I am a bit rusty. (Forgot that templates need { brackets.)

I have some material from my cousin's girlfriend including biography, a list of names of the musicals, and several other useful bits of information, not all appropriate for Wikipedia, and needing references such as page numbers from the biography. I suggest adding several headings -  : Biography  ; Musicals complete list, and short descriptive comments where relevant  ; Collaborations including with Timothy Dudley Smith  ; Articles and Media Appearances  ; References

The material from my cousin's girlfriend includes names of children - not really appropriate, except perhaps that his third son died in 2002. Not sure of the relevance, though.

I may have time to look at this tonight.

Robert of Ramsor (talk) 19:58, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

@Robert of Ramsor: Don't forget that you mustn't include info from cousin's g/f or anyone else unless it appears in published sources you can cite. Ditto for photo - much simpler if you can get owner of the copyright (usually photographer) to upload the file themselves and give permission for its use. Disambiguation epithets should only be as detailed as needed to distinguish from others - and he needed to be included in the disambiguation page, which I've done. PamD 23:42, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
Not forgetting the need for referencing other sources. Cousin's g/f gives a useful outline, but I will use only what I can reference - for example specific page numbers in the biography as verifiable source. Perhaps the most useful thing from her is a complete list of ISBNs for the published musicals, so if we include that, I have the ISBNs to hand. She has given me some material which is definitely not to be used, even without considering the Biographies_of_living_persons guidelines. Robert of Ramsor (talk) 02:08, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
Also hatnote at Roger W. Jones. PamD 23:45, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
The ISBN link is connecting to Worldcat ok. PamD 23:48, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I was probably clicking on the wrong thing. Robert of Ramsor (talk) 02:08, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Tag

Alexander Allardyce (British MP)

Surely it would be better to use the Template:Bare URL inline tag rather than {{Link rot}}, when there is only one link in the article? Prince of Thieves (talk) 21:51, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

@Prince of Thieves: I'm not sure I've ever come across that template; it isn't supported by Twinkle, which I use for a lot of tagging; it would be one more, quite lengthy, template name to remember; and does it really do any harm to use {{link rot}} instead? Are there editors who go around cleaning up articles tagged with the one but not with the other? I don't know. PamD 21:55, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
I am not too sure, I doubt people really go round cleaning up specifically based on tags much anyway. Really I was just wondering why you used one and not the other and didn't fill out the link yourself, given that if you had done it manually it would all be roughly the same effort. I didn't realise you were tagging with (semi)automated means, that does make sense. Prince of Thieves (talk) 21:59, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
@Prince of Thieves: I can recommend Twinkle - it adds the tag, and dates it too, which saves you from seeing it crop up on your watch list when a bot adds the date if you haven't done so yourself; in some cases it prompts for necessary parameters to the tag. It's a useful and elegant bit of kit. But there are editors (well, at least one) who definitely follow up on the {{link rot}} tag, and come along to use ReFill or whatever to fill out the references - see example here. PamD 22:17, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
Nice. I will have to try this out, I have only used twinkle for things like AfD and user warnings so far. Prince of Thieves (talk) 22:20, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Adminship

I know you've been asked this before, and I realise you have previously expressed the opinion that RfA is a week in hell, but after doing the bunch of revision deletions you asked me to do the other day, perhaps it's time to have another think about it? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:58, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

I'd support this too. Guy (Help!) 20:07, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
I'd recommend stopping by WP:ORCP, first. My one interaction with you, PamD, was here and that doesn't incline me to support. If the community believes otherwise, ORCP will give you a small-audience review before making an official run. Chris Troutman (talk) 20:12, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
However, unless I'm mistaken, Pam's !vote did align with the only RfA candidate who got over 300 supports, so perhaps it's different things to different people.... ORCP is worth trying first just to dip your toe in the water, as it were. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:41, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
I really don't feel inclined to invite extra stress into my life, and am reminded by the link above of just how unpleasant even mildly aggressive interactions can be. Goodness knows how many past antagonists would crawl out of the woodwork. Not a prospect I enjoy. I'll carry on with my WikiGnoming for now, and very rarely feel the need for admin tools or the inclination to do anything which would demand them. But thanks, @Ritchie333 and JzG: for the faith in my admin potential. PamD 22:14, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Request

Sir I have added real images of village Movelkote also spelled Mawalkote. And I also added more information about this village . because I am a the resident of this village. And I am one who requested for this page creation so why you deleted image from this page Movelkote (Mawalkot) Rajput Sachin (talk) 07:24, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

@Rajput Sachin: The words with which you started the article were stolen from another website. Please read the explanation about Copyright on your talk page. You must not add material which you "know" as a resident of the village unless you can show a published independent reliable source for it. The photo was a snowy tree and could have been anywhere - why not take and upload a clear picture of the village centre? PamD 10:37, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
The article is now at the sourced title Mawalkot. PamD 10:39, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

Speedy Delete

Please delete Sam Paris/sandbox, it only exists because of a dumb mistake on my part. I would delete it myself if I knew how. Sam Paris (talk) 23:19, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

@Sam Paris: I'm not an admin so can't delete it myself but I'm sure it will disappear soon. Another time you could use {{db-self}} to ask for speedy deletion of a page you've created, or just blank the page which has the same effect. PamD 00:25, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
@Sam Paris: An admin has now deleted it, after some complicated-looking shuffling around. I hope all is now OK. PamD 07:39, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! I'll try not to make that mistake again; there are so many new and more interesting mistakes to make. ;-) Sam Paris (talk) 09:40, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Dear Admin, User_talk:Let_There_Be_Sunshine#Neerali Disagreement about inclusion of starcast. could you help me resolving star cast confusions in Neerali Page.I believe the movie stars Mohanlal Parvatii Nair Suraj Venjaramoodu Nadiya Moidu. there are news article regarding it. some news article clearly mentioned Parvatii Nair doing female lead in the movie ..see here [[121]] and [[122]] but one editor believes star cast should be only Mohanlal and reverted my edits. pls give me a correct advice to resolve this issue.advance thanks Yourmistake (talk) 03:20, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Bishop of Kiev reverts

You reverted every change, so if I was wrong I need to know where I was wrong to learn from the mistakes. I made changes to the Bishop of Kiev disambiguation page per the advice of the DAB fixer. For example, there was a message that I consider removing "ancient Metropolitan of Kiev" per MOS:DABRL which states a red link "should be included on a DAB page only when a linked article also includes that red link. Do not create red links to articles that are unlikely ever to be written, or are likely to be removed as insufficiently notable topics." One page does link there, as indicated by "see List of Metropolitans of Kiev". I think that link should be changed to "List of Metropolitans and Patriarchs of Kiev". On that page is the red link with a lot of other red links that may make their way into English articles someday. Do you have plans to change those red links into articles? Thank you for responding. Vmavanti (talk) 20:33, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

@Vmavanti: On looking closer I can see that the version I reverted to was not good: have reverted to an earlier version which does not have the mass of useless red links, but leads to articles which could well be referred to as "Bishop of Kiev". PamD 20:51, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello PamD, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. Thanks for uploading File:Sutton High School logo 2015.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

CSD

Hi Pam,

You were probably right to CSD that article, pixel whatever something. A website not indicating notability, but it was (apparently) about seven minutes old and created by a new user. I was going to give the editor another 15 mins to respond before suggesting he or she sand box it. I hope that wasn’t wrong. I was trying to factor encouragement into my methods. Edaham (talk) 21:50, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

@Edaham: You may be right - I should perhaps have looked at the history of Pixilart before CSDing it. But the new user hasn't made any more edits since the one edit where they started that unsourced stub, though it's now 40 minutes. PamD 21:57, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
anyway the user now has more than enough info to work out where he or she went wrong, so if it is sourcable and has a diligent user attached to it, it will get worked out in time. Cheers. Have a good day (or night) :) Edaham (talk) 22:03, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

PamD,

Since you essentially reverted my redirection of Staff of Life to The Coral Sea (book) (which I do not object to), what do you think about the rest of the redirects to The Coral Sea (book)? I'm thinking most, if not all of them, should be deleted. Steel1943 (talk) 14:54, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

@Steel1943: Yes, I did realise I was being perhaps a bit bold in killing off your redirect. I'm not sure that individual chapters (?) of a prose poem merit redirects, are you? I could, perhaps should, have made "Staff of life" a redirect to bread and left "Staff of Life" as the redirect to the book ... but any "redirect" hatnotes would have been pretty ungainly. Not sure of the best solution, and no strong feelings - I was just rescuing a threatened useful redirect at WP:RfD. PamD 15:04, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Skill shown for free is skill wasted.

Thanks for reminding me dance again as if one robot Boylen was not enough to make me understand that skills for free aren't appreciated and always pointed out. Rudeness is in that giving warning won't solve the problem either. Articles if edited or even created by me need some time and it is about the person or place what is wanted by masses atleast Asian masses to know. It is like you all pointing air saying that we can't see it so it isn't there. Thanks once again. I wonder why . . . It happens that I forget the things which elders told me above mentioned rule was one of them then this disobedience of not following the thumbrule makes even robots point out. Mansukhsurin (talk) 16:11, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Hmm, should an editor with the above-demonstrated level of English language competence really be trying to contribute to this encyclopedia, I wonder? PamD 16:20, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello PamD, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Question about your Rape (disambiguation) revision

Hi. Why did you make these edits on Rape (disambiguation)? Interqwark talk contribs 22:05, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Interqwark: Because only one blue link is needed per dab page entry and brevity is best. Sorry about lack of edit summary - I was using an unfamiliar borrowed device and saved change too soon. PamD 22:16, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
There was only one blue link. I included “Norwegian: Voldtekt” since that’s the unstranslated title of the movie. And what’s wrong with including “film director”? Interqwark talk contribs 22:19, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Interqwark: The link to "Norwegian" was blue. No more info is needed than what will distinguish the entry. Other detail just clutters the dab page. See WP:MOSDAB. PamD 05:28, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
I did not notice that the template adds a link. My apologies. Purple links (links that I’ve clicked before) are very hard to spot on Wikipedia for me, for some reason. Interqwark talk contribs 01:26, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Season ticket

Hi. Regarding this revision, what makes the article not a stub? I thought it was since it was so short, with each section only being a few sentences long. Interqwark talk contribs 16:02, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

It's certainly not detailed enough to be a Good Article or a Featured Article, but it's got a fair amount of useful info. What it does need is sources, but it's already been tagged for that, for 10 years! There are no hard and fast rules, but if an article has been around for 13 years accepted as not being a stub it's likely not to be a stub. See WP:STUB for some guidance. PamD 16:07, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
I don’t think the age of an article has anything to do with whether it’s a stub. Each section is only a small paragraph long, and there are no references. WP:STUBDEF says: A stub is an article that, although providing some useful information, is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject, and that is capable of expansion. I thought that season ticket fit that criteria. Interqwark talk contribs 06:48, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

OED

This is quite acceptable for a Wikipedia reference. Sources do not have to be available online. What's your point? The reference explains that a subscription is required for access. PamD 08:03, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Ah, I didn’t see the Subscription or UK public library membership required text. My bad! Interqwark talk contribs 08:07, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi PamD,

Thanks for your input on my Sudha Bhuchar article. I am a college student writing a Wikipedia article for a theatre artist who is not accurately represented in online media and chose Bhuchar because I believe that although her work on the screen is important, as you pointed out, she has especially influenced the portrayal of British Asians on the stage. I wanted to more completely explain her personal life and upbringing and artistic goals- she is at heart a political theatre maker, as she emphasizes in her interviews, and I believe the article has a responsibility to portray that.

I appreciate your tips- I combined the sources (our Wikipedia Education module didn't teach us to do that, so I didn't realize it was possible) and deleted King's Lynn Norfolk as a "London suburb" (although Bhuchar does refer to it as that- I am from the US and didn't realize the offensiveness of my insinuation).

Please let me know if you disagree with any of my points before deleting parts of my contribution. I've spent two months researching Bhuchar and her work and feel confident that this article properly represents her influence in a respectful way.

  • @Dpepowski: Thanks for your message (though please remember to add a section heading when you start a new topic on a talk page, and to provide a link to the article you're discussing - for the convenience of the page owner who knows about it, and the information of other people who are watching that talk page).
I'm glad to see that you have edited the article in a less destructive way. You refer to it as "my Sudha Bhuchar article": that is a problem with many new editors. It isn't your article, it's an article in the encyclopedia, written by as many editors as care to contribute. You do not have a right to storm in and over-write other people's work, just because you've been asked to do a student project.
Even in this new edit you had removed several sections which I have reinstated. Again, you must not just remove other editors' content because it does not fit in with your own pre-written text. This is a collaborative encyclopedia, not a place for students to write freestanding essays.
Please note that where there is choice in areas like the format of date used in references, the decision of the original substantial editor of the article should be retained for existing and new references. See WP:CITEVAR. I have corrected this.
You had combined some but not all of your re-used references: I've tided this up.
We don't have a space before a reference - I've tidied that up too. You should perhaps have noticed this detail of Wikipedia style by looking at good articles, or been taught it.
I'd be interested to see where Bhuchar refers to King's Lynn as a London suburb - all I can find is where she says "settling in London via King’s Lynn Norfolk", meaning that she lived in King's Lynn before settling in London (as described in detail in the new ref I found and added).
As this article is about a British Asian it needs to be written in British English - "maths" not "math"! I've corrected.
I don't know what you've done to create your "Playwriting and Screenwriting Selected Works" table, but you need to tidy it up as it has empty lines at the end. It's recommended to use Wikipedia's table markup, as it makes it easier for other editors to understand and edit, and as you did for the other two tables.
I can see that it's difficult for students to understand the culture of Wikipedia especially if they are not taught about it well. Please remember to show respect for the work of other editors. Thanks. PamD 21:27, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
You'll see that I prefer to name references with words, not numbers. Help:Referencing_for_beginners#Refname_rules says "Names must not be purely numeric; they should have semantic value so that they can be more easily distinguished from each other by human editors.", but I understand that the Visual Editor system (which I don't use) allocates numerical reference names, going against that ruling! If there's a way to over-ride that and use a one-or-two-word name for your references I'd recommend using it. PamD 21:35, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Pam. Thanks for your edits. I used the Wikipedia table creator for my list of Bhuchar's work. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to delete the empty rows at the bottom of the table- they don't show up when editing. Do you have any idea how to fix this?

I agree that the Wikipedia Education Module is certainly lacking- you should reach out to the program to voice some of your frustrations.

Dpepowski (talk) 15:47, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

@Dpepowski: I'm puzzled - if you used the same table creator for all 3 tables, how come the first one is in html code and the second and third use Wikipedia code? Strange. I've managed to slightly tidy the bottom of the first table, but only slightly. The final empty row is just weird, as there seems no justification for it in your code! PamD 16:10, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Leeds Wikipedia page

Hi, PamD

Could you please provide me with information on why Leeds has two separate pages, including a factual source that you are using to define the settlement of Leeds? I previously had a conversation with Eckerslike about this and he or she could not provide me with single shred of evidence to justify Leeds having two separate pages. 80.2.15.69 (talk) 17:58, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

If you look in the various talk page archives I'm sure you'll find the discussions. Otherwise, just accept what more experienced editors tell you, and the evidence of the two distinct articles. PamD 18:16, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
See, for a start, Talk:Leeds/Archive 1. PamD 18:20, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

I have looked into the previous discussions and I have not come across any evidence to justify why Leeds should have two separate pages. No I won't just accept what a so called experienced editor tells me, talk about patronising. Wikipedia pages are meant to be backed up by factual sources. You and many other so called experienced editors are purely making up your own rules and not using any factual sources whatsoever. You are literally like the mafia of Wikipedia dictating and pushing your own corrupt agenda. Judging by what you said in the previous discussions, you don't even have a clue what you are talking about and even suggested Leeds is still a town even though it got granted city status back in 1893. Not to mention you were completely basing your entire argument on what you think some persons opinion would be if asked a specific question. Talk about a chocolate teapot argument. I will be taking further action if you cannot provide me with any evidence 80.2.15.69 (talk) 18:52, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello and thank you

Just to say hello and thank you for your Little Yellow Duck Project article in particular, I've had such fun making and distributing little yellow ducks since a friend introduced me to the project this year. I'm not so far away from you (Preston) and was thinking about coming up to Silverdale for the art trail this weekend (not sure yet...) - I guess you've got Silverdale pretty well covered, though, for little yellow ducks. I'm very much a Wikipedia novice, the amount of work you've done is terrific. Best wishes. Peg Pyefinch (talk) 15:53, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

@Peg Pyefinch: Good to hear from you. Enjoy the Art Trail: should be bigger and better than ever from the look of the catalogue. Feel free to bring some ducks: I've only distributed three, so it could make a lot of people very happy if they found a duck to take home! There will be yarn-bombing in the village centre, but ducks with a nice clear "Take me home" label would fit in nicely! (Hmm, red-linked yarn-bombing? An article, or at least a redirect is needed!) (Just needed a redirect from hyphenated version!) PamD 16:23, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Thank you Pam! I've just got two, will try to find good and suitable places to leave them...... Peg Pyefinch (talk) 17:31, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

anchorite

I am a specialist in the area of study with a PhD. Tom Licence is a sexist and the rest of us in the field are endeavoring not to promote his work. However, I should have replaced it with something else instead of just removing it. Hadamard-Gutzwiller model

Hi Pam, I am replying here on your talk page because you said something to me at the discussion to delete the Hadamard-Gutzwiller model redirect and then closed that discussion before I could reply:

A redirect is supposed to lead the reader to an article where they will find something on the topic they seek. There is no mention of the Hadamard-Gutzwiller model at Hadamard's dynamical system, and it is not my job to do a literature search and upgrade that article. ...as it stands, it doesn't help the reader.

This is not true. A redirect from X to Y is an assertion that a reader typing in X is looking for Y. Not all re-directs need to be official alternative names of the article subject, which you can check by reviewing the list of purposes of redirects. (In particular, re-directs do not require citations.) It is not your job to do a literature search to upgrade an article, but it is your job to confirm if a redirect is actually mistaken if you want to remove it. It would not be sensible for editors to go around removing each redirect they don't understand.

You can check my editing record to see whether you really believe that I am eager to delete other editors' contributions but "unwilling to do even a modicum of effort to build on them": I spend a lot of time salvaging other editors' misguided / lazy / careless / ignorant contributions, and that's verging onto a personal attack.

You tried to delete my correct work without attempting any background research at all, and this sort of behavior is a tax on contributions (however minor). I don't need to know anything about your personal edit history to conclude this.

That wasn't so difficult - for you, with the knowledge and the sources.

It required literally 10x more time than it took to create the re-direct in the first place. Holding someone's contributions hostage unless they make further efforts to defend them is just going to convince them that it's not worth contributing in the first place, even if that additional work would be easier for them than you.

Next time please don't react so rudely to an editor who is, in effect, pointing out the gap you left in your own earlier edits by leading the reader to an article which didn't mention the topic they were looking for.

Redirects don't require citations to remain in Wikipedia. The addition information I added today was supplemental; it was not necessary for the redirect to rightly remain. It would be one thing if you had looked up who had created the re-direct and asked me to explain, but starting a deletion process was unjustified.

I avoid editing non-technical articles because it's always easier for other editors to delete than to contribute, and the technical articles just have less traffic and more informed readers. I regret being rude to you, but I stand by my assertion that you should have done more research before removing my minor contribution. Jess_Riedel (talk) 23:52, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@Jess Riedel: Please see Wikipedia:Redirect#What_needs_to_be_done_on_pages_that_are_targets_of_redirects?. There should be something on the target page which indicates to the reader why the redirect has led them there: Normally, we try to make sure that all "inbound redirects" other than misspellings or other obvious close variants of the article title are mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs of the article or section to which the redirect goes. And of course anything on that target page should have a source. As things were, the reader following the redirect Hadamard-Gutzwiller model arrived at a version of Hadamard's dynamical system which gave no indication why they were there. It might have been that the H-G model was an older model replaced by the new system, and that a previous chunk of text mentioning this had been deleted for some reason like copyright violation. No mention of Gutzwiller. No clue.
Now, they arrive at a page which shows precisely why they are there: their term is a synonym for the article title. Just what they need, with a source to check this too. Thanks.
So, while engaged in New Page Patrol, one of Wikipedia's quality control checks, I saw this redirect and listed it at WP:Redirects for discussion. The system notified you automatically, as I knew it would. You replied, and upgraded the target page, and I then withdrew the nomination as the redirect was now clearly useful. A success for the project. The discussion was closed (not technically by me). All is well. If you hadn't been around and the consensus, without your input, had been to delete that redirect, no permanent harm would have been done: next time you came back to the project you would have found the discussion, realised why the redirect had been deleted, and could have added the content to the target article and re-created the redirect.
Incidentally I checked whether there was an incoming redirect from Hadamard's billiard and there wasn't, only from the plural Hadamard's billiards (which doesn't seem to be the term used). So I created the missing redirect. Just improving the encyclopedia in passing, as ever. PamD 07:38, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
First, "Normally, we try to make sure that all 'inbound redirects' ...are mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs of the article" does not mean "redirects that are not explained in this way should be deleted". Consider: is Wikipedia better or worse off with the redirect? The answer is of course "better" because then a reader searching for "Hadamard-Gutzwiller model" will find the correct topic, whereas if this redirect doesn't exist they will just reach a dead end. Furthermore, the reader will not be completely confused as to why they are there, most importantly because "Redirected from Hadamard-Gutzwiller model" appears at the top, and also, in this case, because "Hadamard-Gutzwiller model" and "Hadamard dynamical system" are exactly the sort of variations in naming things that you find in this subject. I have been redirected in surprising ways on Wikipedia before, and I certainly wished there was more explanation, but I have never wished that the redirect was deleted. (Are you really arguing that Wikipedia was worse off with the redirect?)
Likewise, it's preferable that every thing on the target page have a source, but it's not required. There are only a few special case (e.g., biographies of living persons) where all un-sourced material must be removed. Half of Wikipedia would disappear tomorrow if editors went around removing all un-sourced material.
Second, it's very misleading to say "If [I] hadn't been around and the consensus...had been to delete that redirect, no permanent harm would have been done". Except for cases where entire pages are deleted, it's always possible in principle to recover old edits. This does not mean that there is no harm to Wikipedia from deleting contributions from people you don't understand as long as they don't defend them. You waste their time and Wikipedia suffers during the time period it takes to fix things.
Third, contrary to "A success for the project...All is well" the project is worse off compared to the counterfactual where you left alone a redirect you didn't understand. With the time I spent dealing with this I could have been actually contributing something substantive. And I now face a serious disincentive to contribute in the future because I know that there is yet another random editor who might want to delete my contribution unless I go defend it. Jess_Riedel (talk) 19:58, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jess Riedel: Firstly: Yes, I believe that the encyclopedia was worse off when it contained a redirect which gave the reader no indication why they had been redirected. Of course there's a note "Redirected from Hadamard-Gutzwiller model", as you point out, but that reminds them what term they had typed in and assures them that at some point some editor had decided to construct a redirect from that term: it gives no indication of the relationship of that term to the article. You say this is "exactly the sort of variations in naming things that you find in this subject": I think it goes beyond the sort of variation in naming where readers, not all of whom may be as knowledgeable as you, can assume it's the same thing. I wouldn't have challenged a redirect from, say, "Hadamard's dynamic system" or "Hadamard dynamical model". The introduction of a completely different name, not mentioned anywhere in the article, made this a step too far.
Secondly, as above, if the redirect had been deleted I think the encyclopedia would have been better off in the gap before you or someone else came back to make the fix which you did. If you had not been around to improve the target article, the discussion of the redirect at WP:RfD would have continued and I am pretty sure the consensus would have been to delete the redirect. It would not have been my decision alone - the deletion would have been done by an Administrator after the discussion had run for at least a week.
Thirdly: I'm sorry you think you were wasting your time by adding the redirect target to the article, with a source. I think you were spending your time improving the article and helping the reader. I wouldn't suggest deletion of any of your or anyone else's work unless I thought it was a negative to the encyclopedia, as I did here. The point of New Page Patrol is to check new additions to the encyclopedia: I don't know on exactly what automated criteria some new articles and redirects need to be reviewed while others don't. I specialise in checking redirects there, and the vast majority are fine. I sometimes retarget the redirect, occasionally end up creating a disambiguation page instead, and I refer some redirects to the Redirects for Discussion page, as I did here. It's how the system works. PamD 12:08, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Pam, I think we are close to agreeing about the basic facts in this case that we can get input from others. This is important because, if I understand you correctly, you plan on continuing to delete redirects that you don't understand because they are not explained even if they are plausibly correct (i.e., they potentially redirect from an established alternative name and you personally just don't have evidence one way or the other). I do not believe such editing behavior would be consistent with the criteria described in Wikipedia:Redirect/Deletion_reasons. In particular, under "Reasons for not deleting" it lists "3. They aid searches on certain terms. For example, if someone sees the "Keystone State" mentioned somewhere but does not know what that refers to, then he or she will be able to find out at the Pennsylvania (target) article." and "5. Someone finds them useful. Hint: If someone says they find a redirect useful, they probably do. You might not find it useful—this is not because the other person is being untruthful, but because you browse Wikipedia in different ways." Indeed, the reason I created the redirect at 'Hadamard-Gutzwiller model' was that I found that term in a research article and couldn't find it on Wikipedia, and spent a long time (>10 minutes) searching around until I stumbled on the intended article 'Hadamard's dynamical system'.
Let me clarify one more issue to make sure I understand your position better. Scenario #1: There is a redirect from X to Y that an editors knows is appropriate (say, because they have special expert knowledge) but which is not explained in the article about Y. Are you saying that the editor should delete the redirect at X because of the risk that the reader would be confused, and instead send them to a dead end? Assume for the sake of argument that the editor is unable add an explanation to the article because they don't actually have any sources or they don't have time; the only options are to delete or not delete the redirect. Assume also that any proposed deletion is announced in the appropriate place and no other editors respond, so the original editor must make a judgement call. Scenario #2: There is a redirect from X to Y that an editor is honestly unsure about (because they are unfamiliar with the topic) but which could potentially be correct. Are you saying the editor should propose the redirect for deletion, and delete it if no one responds? (Perhaps it would help me to understand you position if you said more about how a reader being confused about a redirect is worse then them simply hitting a dead end; the latter case seems to give them strictly less information.)
Can you please tell me where we should go to get input from other editors on this general question about redirect policy? Jess_Riedel (talk) 13:38, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jess Riedel: Sorry but I've got a very busy few days coming up and haven't the time or energy for any more lengthy discussion of this. I will continue to nominate for discussion at WP:RFD, while working on WP:NPP, any redirects where it seems to me that the reader will not benefit because there is no useful info on their sought term at the target. It seems we will never agree. Best wishes. PamD 05:57, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Sorry to hear that. I've started a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Redirects_for_discussion#Deletion_principles_for_unexplained_redirects_of_alternative_terms and invite you to participate when you have time. Jess_Riedel (talk) 19:42, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello Pam, @Shalor (Wiki Ed) and Alliemallie: Thank you for your comment on Alliemallie 's page about the stub page Reciprocal IVF that was made in our course this spring. As the class is over and the student has graduated (with a new job and new family responsibilities) I do not know if they will be checking their talk page regularly. I will try to reach them. I think that your suggestions for solutions are good ones. I also wanted to thank you for catching the misspelled word in the course title. I am embarrassed to say I did not notice! You don't allow me to correct the page, I have lost all my edits. You aren't exactly cooperative.
You are able to write the page better than me, I have quoted all my sources and you don't care to read them. Xx236 (talk) 06:21, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@Xx236: If you have "lost all your edits" I assume it's because of an edit conflict: this happens, though if you are careful you can retrieve your edits and make them again. That's not my fault, it's just the way Wikipedia works. I see that you have now clarified the article, thanks. I have tidied up a few points - there should not be a space before a reference, etc. Please give more information about your references: the reader should not have to click on a link to find out what sort of source you are using, but the reference which appears on the screen should be as complete and informative as a reference in a printed book or academic paper. Thanks. PamD 07:24, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

No worries. Sometimes I simply misclick… my hand moving faster than my mind, and then I go to the user talk page and leave an apology. I think these were different, however, I think we both had the redirect open, showing it unreviewed. While we were checking to make sure it was valid, one of us reviewed it first, so when the other clicked "reviewed", it automatically went to unreviewed. Regardless, thanks for all you do. @YuriNikolai: Ah, I think that I searched for "black le..", as "Black letter Wycliffe" was the first of the redirects I found at new page patrol, and didn't find it in the article: if I'd searched on "black-le" or "blackle" I'd have found it. Thanks. PamD 15:03, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Kim Timby

Thank you PamD, for sorting the Wikiprojects on Talk:Kim_Timby. Another editor DGG inserted the "News Release" template "news release|1=article|date=July 2018" and I have written to him asking him why he did so. Can you see anything in the article that might lead one to read it as a 'press release'? Thank you for your opinion and guidance on this. Jamesmcardle(talk) 10:05, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

@Jamesmcardle: I watch DGG's talk page and that was what led me to the article - I'm waiting with interest to read his reply to you as it doesn't strike me that way, though I suppose that if you had been a paid editor commissioned to do a piece about her it might have come out much the same way! I've looked at the Ecole du Louvre website hoping to find the sort of profile of an academic which one can usually find, but failed: it would have been a useful "External link".
I've just found a book by her listed in Worldcat. Worth adding to the bibliography, as books carry much more weight than journal articles. If you can find any reviews of it whether in scholarly or other sources, add them ... googling on "Timby" and "Lenticular" finds some useful-looking stuff like this one. Good luck. PamD 10:16, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@PamD: Thank you for getting back to me so quickly...and for the link to the Leonardo review...how had I missed it?! Yes, "3d and Animated Lenticular Photography: between utopia and entertainment" is listed in the bibliography in another edition "Between Utopia and Entertainment: A History of 3D and Animated Lenticular Photography". Perhaps as yet Timby has not produced enough books, but she is one of vey few researchers dealing with the history and social impact/uses of the lenticular image and of colour printing in magazines, work I've found very valuable to my own research. Not enough credibility is given to exhibition curatorship...perhaps I'd better add a section? Should I shorten the article? Perhaps in an effort to set out how the intellectual progression of this research topic from anthropology and history I have become long winded? Jamesmcardle(talk) 10:32, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@Jamesmcardle: I think splitting the book out shows it off better, and adding ISBN provides a link to Worldcat and other sources. I see you've used angled quotes for the titles of publications: Wikipedia doesn't. It can be useful to use the {{cite journal}} template, to format things in Wikipedia's chosen way. I think before making any major changes it would be good to wait for DGG to explain his thinking, though if you've got good sourced stuff about exhibition curatorship, especially material which discusses her rather than the exhibition, it would be useful to add. PamD 10:46, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@PamD: Thank you - I learn something every day on WP (though not much of the coding sinks in, I'll remember to use {{cite journal}}). Amongst the reviews of the exhibitions I will be able to find references to her role and will add as you advise, but I'll call it a night for now and see in the morning what DGG has to say. All the best, Jamesmcardle(talk) 10:52, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello PamD, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:16, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

The Telegraph

Hello PamD - I wanted to drop you a note about my undoing your edit at The Telegraph, so you didn't think I was rude. I understand your reasoning, but that's an issue with SIAs of this type in general and not just this one in particular. There was a suggestion at the (lengthy, probably inconclusive) RfC at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation#RfC: INTDAB links to non-dab pages that would address the issue you raise, but it's going nowhere. Now the heat has died down on that RfC, I'm not sure what to do next - probably nothing! Regards, Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:17, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

  • @Shhhnotsoloud: Thanks for your note. It's a mess, then. A link to The Telegraph ought to show up as a link to a disambiguation page, whether for editors with the gadget which turns it orange, or for bots looking for links to dab pages, because that link will be an incorrect link which ought to be something else for the sake of the reader. If it goes to an SIA page, no such detection occurs. Perhaps The Telegraph should link to the Telegraph (disambiguation) and thence to the dab page, but that would inconvenience the reader by giving them an extra step to work through. Perhaps the gadget which detects links to dab pages should also detect, maybe in a different colour, links to SIA pages. I still reckon that SIA page is pretty much a dab page but am not going to waste energy arguing it. I'm starting to feel tired of Wikipedia and some of its structures, perhaps need to back off from editing for a while. PamD 08:58, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, it is a bit of a mess, and name pages have the same problem. Please stay with us! Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:17, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Royal National Theatre page edits today

Hi Pam, thanks for your message - you are right, I'm an employee, I didn't think about COI. If you'd like to remove all edits made today, that's fine. The things I did put in today I put a number of citations on and I believe to be pretty objective fact, so it would be great to get your view on if they can stay.

Either way, the page is quite out of date and missing key information so I will look through the pages you've shared on how to do that through the proper processes and submit some stuff! Famousbirthdays.com as a source

Hi PamD . I noticed that you recently used famousbirthdays.com as a source for information in a biography article, Lojain Omran. Please note that there is general consensus that famousbirthdays.com does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. (See Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_153#Is_famousbirthdays.com_a_reliable_source_for_personal_information). If you disagree, let's discuss it. Thanks. --Ronz (talk) 01:24, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@Ronz: OK, but before I remove the now-unsourced birth year please look at the results of a google or other search for "lojain omran October 1977" and let me know whether any of them appear to be RS. Thanks. PamD 06:10, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
I already looked, and couldn't find anything written in English. Difficulties with auto-translation prevented me from getting further. Sorry I wasn't more helpful. --Ronz (talk) 15:09, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Apology

I'm sorry for what I said about what you wrote for Lidiya Shulaykina. I was not refering to your article as a sloppy, nor most of Wikipedia, but machine-generated text not that requires significant fixing (example:" Viktor Maksimovich Golubev (Russian: Голубев, Виктор Максимович) (1916-1945) was an aviator of the Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War, twice Hero of the Soviet Union and recipient of several other awards.") I should have explained each part correctly but I did not.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 15:26, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@PlanespotterA320: Thanks for that. I think we all need to acknowledge that different editors choose to do different things here, and as long as they aren't adding unsourced rubbish, bad translations, totally non-notable topics or any of the other sins like attack pages, copyvio, etc etc we can work together to build the encyclopedia. I was criticised recently for asking an editor to add incoming redirects to their newly-created articles, as they didn't see it as their job. Happy Editing! PamD 07:49, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Please can you be a little more careful when making changes like these. You've just reinstated three paragraphs of copyright violations, which were clearly marked as such. Even if you want to keep the sources included in those edits that's no argument for adding copyvio. Hut 8.5 11:12, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

@Hut 8.5: In removing copyvio you also removed sources for content which was then left in the article as unsourced content. Please be more careful not to do so. Thanks. PamD 11:18, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedians at Leeds University/in Leeds

Hey ho! I've just started planning doing a Wikipedathon or something at Leeds University with some of the open access team there. So I'm trying to find Wikipedians at (or around) Leeds University, and just thought I'd post here in case you know any (or are one...!). If you have any pointers or might in theory be interested in being involved in some Wikipedia events at the University, do let me know. No stress if not :-) Alarichall (talk) 21:19, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

@Alarichall: Mmm, interesting idea. I get back to Leeds from time to time so might be able to drop in - keep me posted. The former colleague who led me into editing Wikipedia seems not to have edited since Dec 2015 (hope he's still OK), and I don't know of any others. Good luck with the plan. NPR Silver Award

The New Page Reviewer's Silver Award

For over 2000 reviews. Thank you for your ongoing review work. I note that you mostly review redirects; there aren't a ton of redirect reviewers, and it is a part of NPR that is seldom talked about, but it is essential and appreciated. Thank you. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 00:52, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
@Insertcleverphrasehere: Thank you. Reviewing redirects is obviously much quicker than reviewing whole articles - the vast majority are clearly perfectly OK, only a few need much thought and work - so it's easier to clock up a high count ... but I'm surprised it's so high! Glad to help. PamD 09:47, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your expansive editorial participation. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Alarichall submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate PamD to be Editor of the Week. This editor's achievements are conveniently summarised on their user page. As a creator of nearly 500 substantial stubs and full articles over more than 12 years, PamD has done much to improve the representation of the biographies of women from around the world, playing a part in the Women in Red project. They have also made particular efforts to improve coverage of rural northern England. Alongside these page creations, PamD has worked quietly and tirelessly to sort stubs, tidy up disambiguation pages, and create helpful redirects. On the occasions when my path and PamD's have crossed on Wikipedia, PamD has always been polite and encouraging, making Wikipedia a more cheerful place.

Thank you for your help

I have create now a new article whish is calle "EDU (university)" instead of "EDU". Please can you check it again? So it can be published I think. Greetings, Eleonorexoxo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eleonorexoxo (talkcontribs) 11:42, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

@Eleonorexoxo: Firstly, please take the trouble to learn a couple of basic rules of posting on talk pages:
  1. Add new messages at the bottom, not the top (I've moved this)
  2. Sign all your posts, using ~~~~ or the "Sign" button in the editor. (An automated system has done this for you but you should have done it yourself)
Secondly, I can't find the new article you say you have created, so can't comment on it.
Thirdly, have you any connection with EDU? Please respond to my posting on your talk page by either stating that you have no connection which would cause a Conflict of Interest or by stating that you have such a connection and have read and understood Wikipedia's rules about COI and paid editing. Thanks. PamD 17:52, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

I think the link you were looking at is to the source of the data for the graph. Rathfelder (talk) 22:12, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

@Rathfelder: Yes, but the reference as it appears in the reflist is a bit of a mess (as is the "Description" for the image file as it appears in the information on Commons). Could you please fix it, as it's your work? Thanks. PamD 22:23, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
@Rathfelder: Looking more at the graph and the information on the page at Commons, I don't see that you've really shown where the numbers come from: looking at the page you link I don't see any source which seems to be what the graph is about. Could you give a bit more detail on the Commons description page, please?
I see you've added similar graphs to a large number of health trust pages around the same time, and the reference in the caption seems to be mangled in a couple I've looked at, though it was treated differently in some and here someone fixed it - it seems that you don't need {{!}} after all. Perhaps you could mend the other ones which are broken? PamD 23:05, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
  • I think I've fixed those that were broken - about 1/3 of them. Thank you for telling me.Rathfelder (talk) 12:44, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello PamD, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:11, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

I have investigated and written here regarding the community's concern. Please feel free to participate. Thank you in advance. --Liang (WMTW) (talk) 02:23, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Adel/adoul

Dear Pam thank you for removing my addition to the disambiguation page Adel/adoul. The creation of a separate page for this entry appears to me to be overkill, especially as there are so few English-language references to Adel/Adoul. Basically what you are saying is that no entries may be made on a disambiguation page unless there is a pre-existing wikipedia page for the lemma. This appears to me to be somewhat perverse, especially as it does not correspond to my own experience of Wikipedia. May I suggest you are being slightly over-zealous? Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 16:28, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

@Augusta2: Yes, that's what I'm saying: see WP:DAB and WP:MOSDAB. Everything in a disambiguation page should be a link to a wikipedia page or a section in one, where the reader can find out about the topic mentioned. Disambiguation pages do not contain information and references. I'm curious about your experience of Wikipedia which contradicts this - could you show me the disambiguation page entries you're thinking of? PamD 18:05, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
@Augusta2: Thanks for creating a well-sourced stub at Adel (official). Looks good. I've tidied up both it and the dab page entry. But neither of your sources used the term "Adel". Have you got a source for that? Otherwise perhaps the article needs to be at Adoul? We need a redirect from that term anyway - will do it when not on phone. PamD 06:03, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Yes it's confusing. As you will know from user page I work as a translator. Adel is the word used in official translations in Morocco. It is of course a transcription of an Arabic word. There are many variations it seems, including adl, adil, adoul. Wiktionary say Adoul is the plural of Adel/Adil. I think there is considerable confusion. Let us keep it at Adel for the time being please because of the correspondence with the Arabic name meaning "just/honest". Now that the article is up and once I've linked to the corresponding French page, it may well be that other more expert persons will suggest amendments rooted in a greater familiarity with the term. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 13:10, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Further to the above I've tried linking to the French wiki page "Droit musulman", in which the term "adel" appears, but there is a message I don't understand concerning Sharia that prevents the link being established and tells me to link to another page! Can you help perhaps? Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 13:22, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
The French wikipedia article fr:Adel includes the redirect fr:Adel (droit) which leads to fr:Droit musulman which someone has decide is the equivalent of the English Wikipedia's Sources of sharia. I don't think we can link this new English Adel (official) to anything in French Wikipedia as the linking only applies to whole articles, not sections.
It would be great if you could find an online document using the "official translation" as you mention, to establish the term "Adel" as the English term: at present neither of your sources mention it, and I've found a source which shows both words being used, but in French only. A Google News search on "Adel Morocco -Football" didn't find anything useful in the first 15 pages! Please add something to show that "Adel" is used in English. The French article asserts "L'adel (pluriel en arabe : adoul) est le notaire de droit musulman", but its source uses "Adoul" and "Adouls", so doesn't help. Thanks, PamD 14:39, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Found a reference in Moroccan consular advice in English to Adel functions. This is now ref. 4. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 15:49, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello PamD, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

Terence Suthers

Howdy, RE: Your recent addition of 'Director' to the job titles of Terence Suthers. This one has really baffled me. I absolutely accept it's use here and that it is referenced in the York Civic trust page, but it is not a title that I have seen anywhere else in the Museum's history. I might have to have a trawl through the transactions of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society to see if this can be corroborated either way; although the YPS didn't run the museum after the 1960s the museum's activities are still summarised in its annual reports and the comings and goings of staff is a big features. A curious one to follow up on for sure. Thanks and Best wishes.Zakhx150 (talk) 17:08, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

@Zakhx150: Yes, I had the museum on my watchlist so noticed your changes, looked at it, and wondered who the current Curator was, as the table seemed to stop short of the present. Found Suthers given the different title. Current website offers a "Chief Executive", a "Head of Museum Development Yorkshire", a "Visitor Experience Manager (Yorkshire Museum & York Art Gallery)", a "Head of Collections and Curatorial Services" and a "Senior Curator (Yorkshire Museum)": I wonder which if any would consider themself the successor to the people in the list of Curators and Keepers! Presumably all changed in 2002 with establishment of the Trust. Good luck in ferretting out the information from your sources. PamD 08:15, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
@PamD: Thanks for taking an interest. Well the Chief Executive is Reyahn King, but I doubt if any of the others can yet meet WP:GNG. I suppose I could reference names of individuals in the various departmental posts using York Press or Yorkshire Post articles when they've done an exhibition opening or something, but not have those names Wikilinked. Perhaps some division in the table to show changes in ownership from YPS, to CYC, to North Yorks Council, to Trust status that might account for the discrepancies in nomenclature? I appreciate others keeping an eye on this page as I make edits to it.Zakhx150 (talk) 09:40, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
@Zakhx150: It would be nice to get that table completed down to 2002, even if the individuals aren't notable enough to be linked. And then perhaps a note in the last line of the table saying that from 2002 the museum came under York Museums Trust (or perhaps listing its two CEOs, if that seemed appropriate - I see they are both real museum people, not just corporate managers!). PamD 09:47, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
@Zakhx150: As you may have noticed (!) I've just been WP:BOLD and added a couple of lines. I leave you to fill in the gap! PamD 09:52, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

The layout of the interview book "The Star of Alex Moscovitch | Etoile d'Alex Moscovitch" by Olena Chekan was created by my Father Stanyslas Rodyuk Master builder M.Arch. Stanyslas Rodyuk (born 24 November 1937; died 15 February 2003) was the author of the idea, creator of planning design and the developer of the architectural project of the building of The Druzhba Sanitarium in Yalta that is located on the Crimea peninsula, Ukraine, at present Russia in the Greater Yalta district. His aesthetic vision of planning was that of parametricism in urban architecture and embodied in the main promises of modernism: public space, light and a sense of opportunity. In connection with his political views, Stanyslas Rodyuk was suspended from completion of the building of The Druzhba Sanitarium in Yalta by the architect project leader Igor Vasilevsky - a son of a Marshal of the Soviet Union – Aleksandr Vasilevsky. Stanyslas Rodyuk died of left lung pneumonia caused by tumor load of sarcoma 15 February 2003. The Druzhba Sanitarium in Yalta [1] is recognized as the best architectural project in the history of all Soviet Modernist Urban planning [2][3].

I knew these people personally! They are my family! at home I have a huge archive of their photos, letters and personal veshey

Yes, in creating these articles I acted as an amateur. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Your_first_article I independently learned and mastered the skills of working in HTML to create these articles in Wikipedia As I know one of the Wikipedia principles: make help this article better https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Writing_better_articles

But by destroying and correcting with the lack of truth these articles (none of you personally knew them!), Wikipedia destroy the truth of history.. it is against the right to freedom of opinion and expression, AI and digital security could https://www.ohchr.org/EN/Issues/FreedomOpinion/Pages/OpinionIndex.aspx

I know that during a global catastrophe Wikipedia users will be encouraged to print all articles on available printers to preserve the history of Mankind, but what we will print if the historical truth of the Wikipedia articles will be lost forever? I please you not to turn Wikipedia into a copy-paste which is published under dictation «1984» Big Brother, it is unacceptable to turn Wikipedia into a fence with graffiti that is constantly being broken by anyone who wants.

We can join forces: the professional skills of all Wikipedia administrators and editing area Users with the historical documents archive, that I saved for these articles with documentary confirmed sources of external links.

I bid you, all Wikipedia administrators and editing area Users my hand of friendship and open heart! We can make these articles, about which I am writing in my appeal and the whole of Wikipedia better: Let`s do it! Together! T∴ A∴ F∴ Cordially, Bohdan Rodyuk Chekan von Miller Esq.

Gauaren erregina (talk) 16:52 16 November 2018 (UTC)

@Gauaren erregina: I'm sorry your mother died of such a dreadful illness, but glad to hear that you were with her at the end. The place to discuss whether the page about her should be kept in the encyclopedia or not is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Olena Chekan. You need to read what is said there and argue clearly against anything with which you disagree. You could also improve the article to defend it from what is said there. Where are the "independent reliable sources" which write about her life and work? Articles by yourself are not "independent". You should never have created an article about your own mother: see WP:COI which strongly advises against editing where someone has a "conflict of interest", including writing about your family. If she is "notable" in English Wikipedia's terms, then someone else would eventually write about her: you could have suggested the article at Wikipedia:Requested articles.
Three years on, I can't remember how I came across the article, but my only input was to tidy it up and try to format it better. I'm not going to comment one way or the other at [[AfD, but that is where you should be defending the article. Please be brief there - many editors have little patience with "walls of text" and "TLDR" - "Too Long, Didn't Read it" - is a common response. Make a few key points clearly and concisely. Hello PamD,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, PamD. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Request to my talk page watchers - Community Wishlist Survey

In the Community Wishlist Survey, please vote to support "Support reverting/undoing accidentally sent thanks" in the "Mobile and apps" section - here.

I often check my watch list on my phone, and it's very easy to accidentally let ones finger drop onto the large "Thank" button while looking at a diff. If I want to thank someone when editing on a laptop, I get asked to confirm: when editing on a touchscreen on a phone there's no such confirmation check, and it's all too easy to accidentally thank someone.

Please support this request, which I made through Phabricator about four years ago and which is now seeing some progress but needs a final push from this survey. Canvassing for the wishlist survey is allowed! Thanks. PamD 09:05, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. There was considerable interest in cleaning up this article in one way or another, but there have been few responses to my proposal to trim the passenger lists. Alternative proposals are certainly welcome as well; I'm hoping that we can build some sort of consensus for the scope and direction of the article moving forward. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2019!

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello PamD,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

DRAFTNOCAT

It's certainly a valid option to merely disable categories in draftspace, instead of removing them entirely — but it's not a requirement, because sometimes drafts get filed in categories that aren't the correct places that the completed article would belong in, or in redlinked categories that don't even exist at all, or double-filed in parent and child categories that would run afoul of duplicate categorization rules. If a category is in one of those situations, there's no point in merely disabling it instead of removing it outright. But when I'm trying to clean up Category:AfC submissions with categories in an AWB run, that software doesn't offer me a way to check whether any given category on a draft page exists or not, whether it's the right place for the article or not, and on and so forth — I can only see what category declarations are on the page, and have no way to expand them to check whether they're good or bad categories.

So if bad categories unconditionally have to be removed entirely while good categories have the optional but not mandatory alternative of merely being disabled instead, but AWB offers me no way to tell whether any given category is a good or a bad one, then it's a lot more important that I prioritize making the bad categories go away over anything else. Total removal of bad categories is mandatory, while disabling good categories is an option rather than a requirement — so if I have to err in one direction or the other, then it's much more critical that I err in the direction that prevents any bad category from slipping through the cracks, rather than the one that lets any redlinked or wrong category survive. Bearcat (talk) 16:15, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

@Bearcat: That's really rather depressing: instead of WP:AGF that the categories are likely to be useful, you will automatically remove this work done by another editor. I think it's against the spirit of WP:DRAFTNOCAT, and a sad waste of other editors' work. Is "total removal of bad categories" really mandatory, on draft articles? Seems unlikely. Hiding those cats with a colon or comment tags, so that their goodness or badness can be evaluated if/when the article is ready to be moved to mainspace, would seem much more constructive. Babies and bathwater come to mind. PamD 17:26, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello PD,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 19:38, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I didn't know about the move process, sorry about that. Thanks for sorting this out. Regards, Mentatus (talk) 10:48, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

@Mentatus: No problem. There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia but it's an interesting journey. Have a look at WP:RM to find about the various ways to request a page move: I decided this one was "uncontroversial", but if necessary there could have been a discussion about it. If you ever really need to copy material from one Wikipedia article to another, see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for how to do it - very carefully, and with procedures to ensure that the editing history is always preserved so that we can always see which editors to credit/blame for any edits made to the article over its history. Add to an existing article about yourself.

Dear PamD Thank you for adding a page about me to Wikipedia, it was brought to my attention recently by a friend. I attempted to add a photograph to it together with some factual corrections! However, it appears that I am not supposed to do this. Part of a message I received said: "If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page." I am a novice on Wikipedia and it would be easier if I could use email with you to chat, rather than "User talk” as I use voice-activated software for typing purposes. Grateful thanks. PM as initialism for Plasma membrane

Hi PamD. You undid an edit I made on the disambiguation page for PM. I completely understand the reasoning you gave, but I'd just like to attest the use of the initialism PM for plasma membrane. Here are a few published articles in which the abbreviation is used: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Let me know what you think. Cheers Zumley (talk) 11:27, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Attesting to the usage off-wiki is irrelevant - the criterion for something to be included in a disambiguation page is that it is mentioned in the article. The first of your sources which I checked was pay-walled so I googled and found this which is convincing, so I've added it to the article and reverted my reversion of your edit - but another time, please check for yourself that the abbreviation is actually mentioned in the article, before adding it to a dab page. Thanks. PamD 11:40, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
I didn't realise those were the criteria for inclusion in dab pages, thanks. Apologies about the pay wall. Thank you for updating the article and for your help! Zumley (talk) 11:45, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
@Zumley: See WP:DABABBREV for chapter and verse! There's always more to learn about editing this encyclopedia, but it's an interesting journey. Happy Editing. PamD 11:49, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
I'll have a look! Thanks again! Zumley (talk) 11:56, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Amisom (talk) 18:28, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Nomination of Southport Visiter for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Southport Visiter is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Southport Visiter until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Amisom (talk) 18:44, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

grace period

How about a grace period as users incorporate new material. One edit conflict, then a surprising move, I prefer not to have distractions like that when I am adding content, I'm sure you will appreciate there is no need to pounce on something that should have been created years ago, and there is no urgency to add your improvements to it immediately. Just my thoughts, as I turn to your contributions instead of my own, I know what I am doing but need to double check my own improvements. Regards, cygnis insignis 10:53, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

Hallo Cygnis insignis, I do a lot of stub-sorting, and make changes which seem useful as I go along, including creating redirects, page moves, etc, without always checking the edit history of each article as I go. There's a very useful template {{under construction}}, which I tend to add when I'm first creating an article so that I can save it in a preliminary state and then carry on editing, alerting other editors to this; there's also {{in use}}. Sorry to tread on your toes on this one. PamD 11:01, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
You are right, I should use those templates. Cheers for the attention to it, despite the distraction. cygnis insignis 11:12, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Well as a consolation I've created a brand new category for him! Happy Editing. PamD 11:15, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

WI

Dear Pam

Apologies for the delay in responding to your message. On the question of Royal patronage I would respectfully disagree, in that the various Royals hold titles/ceremonial positions within the organisation (for example, HMQ is President of the Sandringham WI). Much as Prince William is President of the FA, I think an analogy can be drawn here, such that the word "patronage" is not inappropriate in the relationship. I'm not interested in doing anything further on this, since I note you have developed my edit further with new information (for which, genuine thanks), I just thought I would record my respectful disagreement!

I have often seen you around, and often been impressed; believing that you would succeed at RfA, and be a fine administrator.--John Cline (talk) 11:04, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you @John Cline: it's been suggested before, but I'm not prepared to put myself through the stress of RfA, even to help the project which gives me so much enjoyment in life. I'll continue to wikignome around, creating articles on a random set of topics including lots of women, stub-sorting, fixing redirects, sorting out disambiguation pages, treating the place like an infinite jigsaw-puzzle with always something more to be fitted in or tidied up. But thanks for the compliment. PamD 11:26, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
You are certainly welcome, after all, you wrote the praise yourself (in your manner of conduct). And you did forget one important aspect of your wiki-ventures! As oft as I have seen your signature culminating a rather well reasoned comment at RfCs or some such, deserves mention, and kudos in thanks. Kingfishers

I see that you have moved the three kingfisher family articles to singular titles, but each still starts with a plural in the main image caption and in the opening sentence, so you really need to fix these too if you're going to make the move. I thought about doing it myself, but since the topic seems inherently plural, I'm not sure how, so I'd be grateful if you could fix the three articles so that they are consistent with their new titles and still make sense? Many thanks Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:53, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jimfbleak: I came across Tree kingfishers (bird) first, which had been moved from Tree kingfisher in a way which seemed wrong on two counts, with the edit summary "Better looking name, less confusing.", and I reversed the move. I then looked for other recent moves by the same editor and found Kookaburra and Water kingfisher had been moved, so reverted those moves too. I agree that the infobox heading needs to be changed and have now done so: not so sure about the lead sentence. I looked for a featured article on a bird group like this and found that Albatross starts off "Albatrosses, of the biological family Diomedeidae, are ...", so that's good enough for me. I'm not a bird expert, can't remember quite how I came across that first tree kingfisher! I've put in a WP:RM for River kingfishers to complete the set, and added a hatnote there to help readers looking for Common kingfisher under that name. Hope that all makes sense now. As more of a bird person, you might have a view on whether the same editor's set of changes from List of Falconidae to List of Falcons etc are a good thing or not: Category:Lists of birds seems to have a mixture! Thanks. PamD 16:21, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jimfbleak: I also created a dab page at Pygmy kingfisher as it was previously a redirect to African pygmy kingfisher but is listed as an alternative name for River kingfisher(s). PamD 16:42, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
OK, thanks for that. I'm not sure how much currency pygmy kingfisher has as a synonym for the family, but it can't do any harm, so that's fine with me Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:56, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello PamD,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.

Lifelong Learning Platform

Thanks for that. It wasn't the same but I suspect it could have originated from the same place. I've moved it to draft and will drop the creator a line. Deb (talk) 17:03, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Running blades

Hi, did you get any interest yet from other editors in your proposed article about running blades? If it's still on your to-do list I might be interested in collaborating with you. I had been struggling with health issues for quite some time that resulted in my edit rate here slowing way down. I feel I need something substantial to do here to get my wiki-mojo flowing again. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:31, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

@Dodger67: No, no-one has responded (to be honest I can't remember where it was that I posted about that missing article!) It's not really on my to-do list - quite a few things are, but most especially a lot of off-wiki stuff, I've only allowed myself to log back on briefly as a little treat and will shortly resume my wikibreak. Good luck with the article if you decide to go for it, but I won't be collaborating, sorry. PamD 22:52, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
For any interested talk-page watchers: see WT:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics#Running blades. PamD 07:37, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

If you're going to add a {{disputed}} tag to Restroom, shouldn't you add the same tag to Toilet, where the disputed material comes from? bd2412 T 17:49, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Never mind, I see the specific point of dispute that you are raising. bd2412 T 17:51, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
I came across Restroom while stub-sorting. I didn't notice any acknowledgement of the material being copied! Toilet doesn't say the "Restroom" is used in a domestic setting. PamD 17:55, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

References to OED

Pam, hello again. More unit stuff (!)... and I was just looking at Lea (unit), and the OED reference gives me a demand to "sign in". I had a vague recollection that access was free from the UK, but not elsewhere, although the website suggests this is not true. (But of course I don't know whether it is detecting where I am, and giving a different message.) Can you confirm? I'm going to add "subscription required" to the citation template anyway. NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello PamD,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.
