Surachai Chantimathorn (born 29 April 1948) is widely known as one of the best music composers in Thailand and the founder of the legendary music band called “Caravan”. Amongst followers of the genre, he is considered to be the father of “Pleng Pheu Chevit” a music which covers topics of humanity or political situations in various times.

Early life[edit]

Surachai was born in Amphoe Rattanaburi, Surin province. He is the fourth child of Mr.Yuth and Mrs.Lek Chantimathorn. His nickname is “Ngha” which is from a Cambodian word meanings “little boy”. His father was a government worker as the principle of Rattanaburi school in his home town, which allowed him to become a book worm when he was very young and later he go to Bangkok and continued studying arts, cultures and modern cultures at The college of fine arts(วิทยาลัยช่างศิลป์) in 1964. In this period of his life he had an opportunity to meet philosophers and writers who later also became very popular and well-known, such as Suwannee Sukhontha and Suchit Wongthet, . In other words, these were the factors that brought him to be a great song writer and spiritualist. Later on in 1973, Surachai established his own band with Weerasak Sunthornsri (Deang) called “Tor Sen Sun jon) .Within 1 year later ,in 1974, he decided to join his band with another band “ Bangladesh band” ,under the patronage of Mongkhol Uthok ; they came up with a new name called “Caravan”. Caravan mostly focused on music is dedicated to some important people whose stories affect to the communities, especially in the role of inequality in Thailand. Jitr Bhumisak, Pridi Banomyong , are an example.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Surachai has been married 2 times and he has 2 sons.

Political Involvement[edit]

During the time he started working for Caravan, Thailand politics had a mess of problems proceeding from 1973 Thai popular uprising, Thailand's greatest uprising ever ; the Vietnam war and the fear of communism spreading in Thailand. Such political strife-was in contrast to Caravan’s purpose of making Thailand become more equalized by supporting the working class and , the most important yearning for a true democracy. And yet, after 6 oct 1976, when Thai Junta government under Sa-ngad Chaloryu decided to wipe out all the communist communities in the Kingdom of Thailand -which caused the worst political violence ever to happen in Thai history—Surachai and his band decided to abscond with the Thailand communist party into the deep jungle in the north-east region which is also known as Isan. At this time, his role was as an entertainer for everybody in the party. For this reason, he was also known as “Sahai panta” which means “Friend who has a thousand eyes.[2]

Later in 2008, Surachai appeared in the anti Thaksin uprising with PAD (People alliance for democracy) with the same role, as an entertainer. He still held the same political ideology of making the community become more equal and get the perceived-offenders , such as Thaksin Shinawatra, punished

In music career[edit]

Surachai and his band released their first album in 1975 which was called “Khon gab Khwai” meaning humans and buffaloes. This album was sold for 500 pieces at 25 baht each. Anyhow, Surachai and caravan are praised for being the first who changed the way of music in Thailand. “American is dangerous” for instance, is their top hit, and it highlighted the problems of the Thai democracy under control by another country . Another example is the album “ US and JAPAN” which expressed the invasion of the Japanese economy in the 1980’s. [3]

However, Caravan was the first band and the original legend for Pleng Pheu Chevit who presented the a different way of music, music which can improve the community and reflect the societal problems at the same time, but they are not very successful enough . In other words , they never became a top hit because their lyrics were too direct and their music beats were not entertaining enough. However, later there was another band called Carabao which adopted these elements to their own music which resulted in making Pleng Pheu Chevit become more popular, especially for 80s teenagers.

Biography in Talk Page[edit]

Please do not use a talk page to create a draft biography of a musician. It is a waste of time because talk pages are not reviewed by reviewers. You already have two versions of the biography in the review process. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:41, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
