Whitefield

Jeff, thanks for your query re: Whitefield article qualifying for WP:GAN, which you posted on my talk page a month ago. Sorry, I have been out of the loop for too long - not been very well for a while and aso fed up of idiot hijacks by (at least on face value) the youth of today. The Semp family and their friends appear to have a lot to answer for, although of course it could just as well be some malicious "not right" trying to implicate them. I know some of the family, BTW, in a vague way via past work environments and also local newspaper articles etc - no particular reason to believe that they are a party to what has gone on, which is hopefully enough verbiage to keep the lawyers away.

I'll have to read up on what WP:GAN is, as I'm very ignorant on this sort of stuff. Got a whole load of other things I'd like to add to the article, though. Just need to get my head into gear and also work out how to source the numerous anecdotal items which have been passed on to me over the years. Also have a couple of books to hand that need a thorough dissection, most notably an 1893 copy of The Memorials of Stand Chapel - there will be some meat in there, somewhere. Better had be - it cost me a tenner via AbeBooks ;)

The To Do section of that article is a bit of a worry to me. I know bits relating to most of what is on the list but I have no supporting written evidence, so it would be pointless me adding the knowledge.

Found some beautiful pictures, taken around 1910, of the area near to Stone Pale - and they tonight evoked many memories among a group of mates at the Eagle & Child - but, alas, they're copyrighted to a local chap who frequents Flickr. I may have a word with him, as I think that I also know a woman who was born in the house immediately next door to the one from which the photos were taken ... so there is an off-chance that she may have info also. One of the photos appears to show, at a great distance, the kiln stack of the brickworks.

You'll gather that I'm more into the history than the present day. The present frightens the life out of me!

I don't think you should have included specific quotes for "cunt" as the response was predictable. Options:

• (preferred option) Drop the quotes and focus on the pages from the intro. If necessary find Chaucers' apology for using "queinte" in Miller's Tale. Can't remember the exact original text in the Tale but I bet it's online; IIRC the Penguin translation is "caught her by the quim". Use the definition / usage pages just as back up ("further examples at", w/o quotes) in the ref text, not the main text.
• Use the preceding quote from Freiris of Berqwick, which hardly needs tranlsation - "she grabbed her cunt and gave it two slaps".

Cromford Canal

The chances are probably slim, but when you were researching the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal did you come across any references to Cromford Canal? I'm not surprised, it must have been a POV minefield. In all seriousness Slatersteven, Parrot of Doom can edit at whatever rate he likes. It's good to have someone check over other's edits for grammar and stuff, but please remember that you do not own the article and other people are allowed to edit without having to ask permission. I did hesitate to edit this, since the man's political views are quite the opposite of my own, but I value the right to free speech and I think people have the right to read an entirely unbiased encyclopaedic article of such a contentious figure. I'm quite happy for people to read the facts and draw whatever conclusions they wish from it.

Personally I find lots of small edits easier to check than a few larger ones. (Using popups makes them very easier), also it is easier to query or revert a small edit, than part of a big one. Martin451 (talk) 00:02, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

He did say that he did not want to murder anyone although sinking boats is an especially dangerous activity which in many cases involvesthe expenditure of quantities of 20mm ammunition. Griffin does suggest throwing life rafts and abaondoning them presumably in the middle of the Gulf of Sirte. The usual rule of the sea is to pick up people in this situation. Grand Admiral Donitz was prosecuted as a war criminal for a similar policy. I do not suggest that we be at all POV against Griffin, just brutally honest.
