Convert[edit]

The simplest way to use convert is like this.

Suppose you want to convert 2 feet,

{{convert|2|ft}} will give you "2 feet (0.61 m)"

Perhaps you want to convert to centimetres,

{{convert|2|ft|cm}} will give you "2 feet (61 cm)"

Rounding is automatic and determined by the precision of input value but you might want a different rounding

Perhaps you want to round to three decimal places,

{{convert|2|ft|3}} will give you "2 feet (0.610 m)"

Perhaps you want to convert to centimetres and round to three decimal places,

{{convert|2|ft|cm|3}} will give you "2 feet (60.960 cm)"

Negative-precision rounding is also possible,

{{convert|2|ft|cm|-1}} will give you "2 feet (60 cm)"

You can also specify a number of significant figures,

{{convert|2|ft|cm|sigfig=3}} will give you "2 feet (61.0 cm)"

You'll notice that the input unit is spelt-out and the output unit is abbreviated. You can override this by using abbr.

You might want to abbreviate both input and output (useful in infoboxes),

{{convert|2|kg|abbr=on}} will give you "2 kg (4.4 lb)"

You might want neither abbreviated,

{{convert|2|kg|abbr=off}} will give you "2 kilograms (4.4 pounds)"

Sometimes you might want to use the adjective form in which units are singular and a hyphen is used (not for abbreviated units though).

{{convert|234|Cal|adj=on}} will give you "234-calorie (980 kJ)"

Dual conversions are possible.

Ranges can be specified with a "to",

{{convert|23|to|34|ha}} will give you "23 to 34 hectares (57 to 84 acres)"

If you prefer a dash, use a hyphen,

{{convert|23|-|34|ha}} will give you "23–34 hectares (57–84 acres)"

You can also use "and",

{{convert|53|and|84|cuft}} will give you "53 and 84 cubic feet (1.5 and 2.4 m³)"

Another is "by",

{{convert|12|by|36|in}} will give you "12 by 36 inches (300 by 910 mm)"

There's "x" too,

{{convert|12|x|36|in}} will give you "12 by 36 inches (300 mm × 910 mm)"

Default spelling is Commonwealth.

For liter, meter, etc. use sp=us

{{convert|375|ml|sp=us}} will give you "375 milliliters (13.2 imp fl oz; 12.7 U.S. fl oz)"

It's not really spelling but sp=us will give metric tons instead of tonnes

{{convert|35|t|sp=us}} will give you "35 metric tons (34 long tons; 39 short tons)"

I thought you might have been asking about that but you did call yourself a novice. The template works sort of like this.

First you're at the main {{Convert}}.
You're next sent to a unit page for the input unit (unit combos like "6 ft 2 in" complicate things), e.g. {{Convert/m}}
You then go to a display page where the input & output is arranged (in brackets, as a table, using an "or", etc.), e.g. {{Convert/LoffAoffDbSoff}}.
You then go to the unit page of the output unit.
Next pages like {{Convert/LoffAonSoff}} (notice that there's no "D") display the output
next comes the calculations.

No worries at all. Sorry I was so brief last time. Actually this discussion has inspired me to get started on a couple of things. The first is the long over-due Template:Convert/Transwiki guide and the second is {{convert/basic}}. The purpose of the guide is to help people copy the template onto other wikis. The purpose of {{convert/basic}} explained in the guide but, briefly, it's an alternative version of the template which has only a very limited functionality but needs only 14 (sub)templates so could be useful at least as a temporary version. You're requesting a detailed explanation of the workings of the template. Okay, I'll have a stab at doing so but let me write it on the guide since it might be useful to other users wanting to transwiki the template (not right now though, I've gotta go). Invitation to the African Destubathon[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
