Porn vs Phon

You are right that porn is common within English language usage, especially before RGTS. But Thai intellectuals (teachers, artists and writers) that I know feel strongly about the use of the term porn in Latin script because of its demeaning connotations in English, especially when connected with young women, religion and culture, the theme of the Nariphon article. The reason is that it could lead to misinterpretations, this is why I had kept "porn" deliberately out and stuck to RTGS. (Xufanc (talk) 11:40, 9 September 2012 (UTC))

I don't see anything in Wikipedia:NFCC that restricts use of a non-free samples to just articles about the work that has been sampled. I believe that it meets the criteria #8: :"Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." Contextual significance means that the sample makes a contribution in the context in which it is being used. The Bangkok article has an entire section devoted to explain how unusual the full name of the city of Bankok is, and the song is very relevant and helps the reader understand the subject better. If not unique, it is very, very unusual for a songs lyric to consist IN ITS ENTIRETY of just the name of a place. That is all that the songs lyric contains, repeated over and over and over, and it is the song that is responsible for most of the occupants being able to remember the name of their city. So the name of the city, the name of the song, and the song itself are all connected, and best discussed where it is.

It seems as though you would not object to the sample being in an article about the song. I don't know if there is really any need to write an article just about the song. There is not much more to say about it than has been said in the article about Bangkok. If in the future, it was to have its own article, then the use of the sample could be moved there and the song could be linked from the Bangkok article. I don't think it should matter either way. I find both uses acceptable and don't understand how it would be acceptable in one use and not in the other.

I don't claim to be an expert on fair use, and I tend to be liberal in my interpretation of Wikipedia guidelines, so I willing to discuss this further and perhaps see how my interpretation is in error. If there is some relevant guideline or discussion that explains your objections in more detail, I'd like to see it. Default scale in Location maps

I very much like the idea of autoscaling vertical maps (especially in infoboxes). I just added defaultscale=0.75 to {{Location map USA California}}. Thanks for implementing it!

One comment: shouldn't defaultscale for vertical maps generally be 0.75? This is analogous to the "upright" flag in the image markup. I noticed that you set defaultscale for Thailand to be 0.57. This strikes me as being too small. When the default width of a map is 272 (in an infobox, say), then I think editors would be surprised if the map is scaled to be 272 pixels tall. Infoboxes are generally taller than they are wide, by design, so having a 204 by 359 pixel Thailand map seems just fine to me. —hike395 (talk) 14:00, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I was under the impression that the 0.75 scale for the upright flag was assuming a 4:3 image ratio, so that the height of upright images (those that are of that proportion) matched the width of others. Bang-kok's kok, by Edmund Roberts

Edmund Roberts (diplomat) always hyphenates 'Bang-kok" in his journal, but not in his treaty. He put this footnote referring to a landing at the bottom of page 234 [digital image 241]:

* On the right bank of the river, which is called Bang-kok—the word Bang-kok is derived from ban, a house, and kok, a garden. Most of the fruit used at the old capital, came from this place.

Don't know where he got garden for kok. The on-line Royal Institute Dictionary (RID) for the noun กอก gives มะกอก and adds (มะกอกบ้าน หรือ มะกอกป่า ก็เรียก.) Nor do I know why he says "ban, a house" instead of bang. For bang RID has one definition as water tambon, or district. Note Bang- in central Thai place names always refers to a ban, in the sense of hamlet, on a riverbank or shore. Roberts also wrote:

The spot on which the present capital stands, and the country in its vicinity, on both banks of the river for a considerable distance, were formerly, before the removal of the court to its present situation, called Bang-kok ; but since that time, and for nearly sixty years past, it has been named Sia yuthia, (pronounced See-ah you-tè-ah, and by the natives, Krung, that is, the capital ;) it is called by both names here, but never Bang-kok ; and they always correct foreigners when the latter make this mistake. The villages which occupy the right hand of the river, opposite to the capital, pass under the general name of Bang-kok. [page 281, image 288.]

PS: "Bang" was defined as "haven" in the only use of the word I've ever seen in Isan. It was in an English-language pamplet on the etymology of Mukdahan. It said "Muk" came from "Bang-Muk," a haven for clams on the right bank of the Mekong, across from Savannaket. Our article calls it Muk Creek (Thai: ห้วยมุก) instead.—Pawyilee (talk) 16:38, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

BMT paragraph and inaccuracy

"to undergo rapid development during 2004–09. The plan was approved by the cabinet on 7 September 2004, and consisted of the following extensions:

However, by 2008 only 41 kilometres (25 mi) of the proposed extensions had been constructed. The OTP accordingly made modifications to the plan in November 2008 to provide for a more suitable framework.[1]"

It is incorrect to say that by "2008 only 41kms of the proposed extensions had been constructed". The sentence refers to the plan adopted on 7 September 2004. By 2008 no extension had opened and only the 2.2km BTS Silom line ext to WWY had been constructed but had as yet not opened (May 2009). No proposed extensions as of the Sept 2004 had been constructed at all by 2008!

The sentence should either read "by 2008 no proposed extensions had been constructed". Or, "by 2008 the 41km of existing lines had not been extended nor no new lines added."

It is completely inaccurate hence why it was changed.

As an added point it should be highlighted that the 10 line plan was taken to the 2005 election and the PM promised to implement all lines by the end of the decade. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yappofloyd (talk • contribs) 07:39, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

I am not sure what you are trying to do now after I've looked through your contributions, you deleted everything I wrote and posted messages to admins. Isn't it ok to use layout from another article? I assume that, as long as the article is accurate, it is ok. I've tried reverting my own edits on many articles now.

As you are from Thailand, I would like you to try your best on editing articles about Thailand.

It's okay to copy from another article, but attribution has to be given as noted in WP:Copying within Wikipedia. Copying the layout is fine, but your copying content and replacing country names resulted in obviously wrong information. For example, when you created Thai national ID card, you mostly replaced "Malaysia" with "Thailand", which resulted in inaccuracies such as a link to MSC Thailand, which doesn't exist, and the claim that "Thailand became the first country in the world to use...", which of course is incorrect. Likewise, when you tried to create the Time in Cambodia article, you replaced Thaksin Shinawatra's name with Hun Sen's, resulting which also is plain wrong. I would normally not use just any CNNGo article as a reference but in the case of "World's 50 best foods" for the Thai cuisine article, the poll was organised by the staff, and not a random CNNGo blogger. Bangkok City Scape

I am wondering why you removed the photo of the Silom area. The photo that it replaced is sub standard, low res and is for the most part the sky?

The photo that I used is High res, is representative of the "city scape" and far more reasonable of a photo then the one you restored. I see in your history that you do a lot of edits of Thailand and am wondering if you feel that night photo of the Silom area (Financial district) is NOT representative of the true cityscape of Bangkok, and readers would be better served looking at the clouds in the sky over Bangkok?? talk--WPPilot 10:16, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, perhaps we got off to a bad start, forgive me if I was a bit outspoken on our efforts here. I have been doing professional photography for many years and my objective is to "always improve" everything that I edit. I am here for a week and plan to reshoot a number of pages. You are clearly an expert on this area and I am not opposed to suggestions, if you have any Paul. As you have seen I have been doing photos of Thailand for many years. Redlinked categories

I already do create the desired category sometimes, specifically if and when I am able to be sure that all of the following conditions are true:

1. the category is genuinely warranted and appropriate (which is not always true, as people frequently add categories that are entirely nonsensical, badly named or far too narrow to ever be anything but an WP:OC#SMALL violation);
2. it doesn't already exist at another name (which, again, is not always true); and
3. I know enough about the topic to know what its correct category parentage is.

For example, just in the batch of "uncategorized articles" that I processed today, I personally created at least one new category and fixed the spelling on about a dozen redlinks where the only problem was that somebody had miscapitalized or misspelled some of the words. But if I can't answer yes to all three of those conditions, then I'm not going to directly create the new category as I can't necessarily be sure that I'm not creating unintended new problems in the process. Thailand coup article assessment

You have recently changed my assessment to "This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge." I think the article and the events are of top importance to Thailand and hence it's project on the Wikipedia. What is your opinion please? My line of thinking was that as this is somewhere between the 12th and 18th coup in Thailand (depending on how you count), and the second in less than a decade, in the grand scheme of things articles about individual coups like this one may not turn out to be as important to the reader's understanding of Thailand as, say, the summary article History of Thailand and its sub-articles. It's likely that by next year there won't be nearly as much interest in the topic any more. However, I hadn't considered that it may be appropriate to adjust an article's importance assessment as events progress and change. I agree with your line of reasoning. So I'll change it back to Top-importance for now, and we will reassess it if it will become "just another coup". One issue however, I have watched the Coup leader's speech in which he outlined his plan, and he insists that the reforms will be introduced under military rule, and he intends to step down in one-two years time (if I remember right). This period of time under military rule seems to be significant, and though I don't know the history of other coups this one seems to be different in this important aspect. Yuan Phai

Hi, Paul. Thanks. I looked this up before posting the map. As far as I read it, Google actively encourages you to use Google Earth images on the net and elsewhere, but insists (quite reasonably) that the image includes their logo and their copyright claim. See http://www.google.com/permissions/geoguidelines.html. I adjusted the map I made to make sure it conformed to those conditions. So what's the problem?

Krisda Arunvongse na Ayudhya

Hi. I saw that you added the fact that Bangkok Governor Krisda Arunvongse na Ayudhya was the same individual as the sport shooter who competed in the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics. The Sports Reference link, however, does not mention that he later became Governor and none of the Governor's obituary mention his Olympic participation, which seems like a significant oversight, even if his political career was far more notable. Thai Union Group

So far, the COI editors on the Thai Union Group article have been doing quite a nice job of improving the article, and, after the warning, even re-instating the critical refs that initially had been removed from the article. I recently tagged both for merger due to the fact that they appear to be the same food, as "khanom khai" on its own literally means "dessert egg". Hi Paul. I just wanted to let you know about my reasoning behind declining the speedy delete of Krabi International School. I saw the talk page and wasn't sure if it was students putting the article together. I guessed it was probably staff, hence paid editors. Hi! When you change the target of a redirect with "(disambiguation)" in the title, the new target should also be a disambiguation page. If there is no dab page that it can be redirected to, then the page should be deleted. (I use WP:G6.) The edit that brought me here was this one, when you redirected Indochina (disambiguation) to Indochina; your edit summary said, Redirecting to Indochina, which now serves as a WP:CONCEPTDAB.

Assessment importance Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro

Hello Paul 012, in your dummy edit here you have indicated your doubt about how important this subject is. It may be hard to find consensus as to what or who someone ought to know about. But if notability is any indication, there is hardly any Thai person who does not know Luang Pu Sodh. He is well-featured in folk religion, and the temple he revived, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, is a temple that has in the last thirty years known at least two Supreme Sangha Council members. If you search his name in Thai (หลวงพ่อสด) in a news archive such as the Matichon E-library, you will find loads of articles about him, his life, the meditation he taught and the amulets he made. In the West he may be less well known, but I am uncertain whether we can use only the West as a standard.--S Khemadhammo (talk) 23:49, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for providing your views. Personally, I've lived in Thailand my whole life and only first heard of Luang Pu Sodh here on Wikipedia. While I wouldn't consider myself representative of the entire population, I do think of him as a figure well known to mostly a specific group of followers. Now there's of course no doubt of his notability, but all subjects of Wikipedia articles (whether Low- or Top-importance) must be notable anyway. Since the scope of WikiProject Thailand covers everything Thailand-related, assessments should ask, "How relevant is the subject to the reader's understanding of Thailand as a whole?" Most of the biographies currently in Category:High-importance Thailand articles I've assessed as such for the amount of coverage in major reference works on general Thai history. Hence most are kings and prime ministers. Buddhist monks are of course important figures in society, but they usually take a secondary position in the general discourse on Thailand.

You might want to take a look at the assessments I proposed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thailand#Mass importance assessment. A personal rule of thumb I used for assessing High-importance lies along the lines of, "Would a Thai student completing primary school be expected to know about the subject?" I answered no for Luang Pu Sodh, hence the Mid-importance assessment. Also, there's sort of a scheme of descending relative relevance here, where central core concept articles are Top-importance, and more specific aspects placed lower down the hierarchy. E.g., Religion in Thailand is assessed as Top-importance and Buddhism in Thailand as High. So most of the specific aspects of Thai Buddhism are Mid-importance, while the large majority of individual Buddhist temples and monks are assessed as Low. This doesn't mean the lower-assessed articles are less notable, just that they're a lesser priority with respect to the entire project's scope. Of course, were "Thai Buddhism" the scope of the WikiProject, Luang Pu Sodh would easily be High-importance. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:34, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Alright, you have made some good points here. I have no doubt your assessment system is through and valid. Still, looking at the list of high-importance articles, I am uncertain as to the assessment discussed here. There has, in the past years, been a lot of coverage with regard to Somdet Chuang and Wat Phra Dhammakaya, both making front page headlines consistently for months on end. And both of them originate from the tradition of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen and Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro. However, Luang Pu Sodh comes from a time when there was little news coverage, and historical sources may not have given much attention to the Wat Paknam tradition. Perhaps this is because Wat Paknam was strongly associated with Phibul Songkhram, who has often been described as anti-royalist, and Thai history has always been written by royalist writers.--S Khemadhammo (talk) 09:20, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Regarding the history aspect, it can be seen as unfortunate that Wikipedia in general tends towards Recentism, but it's also true that readers are more often looking for information about contemporary than historical topics. As the assessment system's goal is to prioritise and provide focus on what readers will be looking for, I think it's natural that this would be reflected in the assessments. So though Wat Phra Dhammakaya is descended from Wat Paknam, it's Dhammakaya that's been the focus of interest for the past few decades. Actually in my proposed list I've listed both for Mid-importance, though looking at it again Dhammakaya could actually be High, due to the amount of interest it's generating. There's always room for interpretation though. I'm not sure if the bot operator has started working on the list yet, but each page's assessment can always adjusted once they're done. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:10, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Another thing: would you care to take a good look at the Wat Phra Dhammakaya article some time? The article has not been commented on much since the last five-six months or so, and I would appreciate some input. Since you can read Thai sources, I'd appreciate your reflection on the article. (Sorry, but what's the source for the changed figures? Also, sea temperature seems barely relevant since Bangkok has less than 5 km of coastline.)
Data for sea temperature is actually for Samut prakan. (I thought it might be useful for visitors)
Daily mean temperature I've recalculated because numbers are wrong: Jan (32.5+22.6)/2=27.55 (not 27.0), Feb (33.3+24.4)/2 = 28.85 (not 28.3) etc.
If you want to update Climate table replace Daily mean figures with these

You're right. It appeared to me that bangkoktourist.com is not official web site of Bangkok, and, when switched to english, parts of site were not translated. That's why I've tried to find better (official) source.

From what I understand, the mean temperatures are supposed to be calculated from the hourly temperatures of every day in the month. It's unrelated to the average between the maximum and minimum, which would technically be the mid-range, and isn't usually reported. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:51, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

That only applies when the redirect is synonymous with the target article. It isn't here. - I think you're wrong. WP:R#PLA unequivocally does not state this. Well, the Death of Wichian Klanprasert article was probably a borderline case. It could be seen as a minor subtopic, as in the density of water example under R#PLA. For comparison, the redirect previously pointed to Chalerm Yoovidhya, and it would have been inappropriate in that case to include Vorayuth's name in bold, since he was only mentioned in the section discussing the family. You're right that WP:MOSTEXT does explicitly allow bold text for titles of subtopic redirects; I stand corrected. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:41, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

DEPRODDING of Phadaeng Nang Ai

Hi you recently refused the PROD on the above article with the comment that it is a notable folk tale but without adding any sources to prove its notability. The only source that is on the article is non clickable and in Thai. When machine translated the source gives this as information. "Wattana Elephant Treatment, (1996). Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Ban Chiang in the 50th Anniversary of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne, June 14-16, 1996" it is impossible to identify the source and verify its reliability a search for วัฒนา ช้างรักษา,(1996) turns up nothing. When removing the PROD tags it is highly recommended to improve the article to address the concern as per WP:DEPROD. Do you have any sources to back up the statement that it is a "notable folk tale"? Have you tried re-googling the title using the new spelling? If so, you'd find a book translation of the tale published by Bucknell University Press with several reviews accessible on JSTOR. The current source is a Thai book, which is acceptable per WP:NONENG. You can find its entry in the UCTAL library catalogue here. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:17, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

With the new spelling I get enough hits thanks. Of course the Thai reference is valid but what i was pointing out was that 1 reference is not enough to prove notability regardless of the language especially when there are no links to anything!
