January 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm Gtwfan52. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Fort Wayne, Indiana, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. when you change a referenced fact, you need to show a new reference for the new fact. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:04, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

referencing[edit]

Hi...thanks for finding the reference for that fact. It has been restored and referenced. I kinda learned as I went on here. You can always look at a reference in the edit window to see how it is done. And admittedly, I take the lazy way out on web references. I just enclose the bare url with the reference brackets such as this: <ref>www.url.com</ref>, and then run the Checklinks tool on the page when I am done. That properly formats the reference and any other malformatted ones on the page and marks any that have gone dead. I am going to put a "Welcome template" here on your page with a bunch of links. Among those links are a couple to guides for beginners. And I am going to leave you a link to a forum where you can ask questions and get answers without attitude. They helped me a bunch when I was first starting out. Thanks for joining the corps of Wikipedia editors. Happy Editing. (I usually answer peoples questions a little more thoroughly than this, but I am in bed with pneumonia....) Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:13, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is being posted on your Talk page where you can receive messages from other Wikipedians and discuss issues and respond to questions. At the end of each message you will see a signature left by the editor posting. This is done by signing with four ~~~~ or by pressing or in the editing interface tool box, located just above the editing window (when editing). Do not sign edits that you make in the articles themselves as those messages will be deleted, but only when using the article talkpage, yours or another editor's talkpage. I found a referencing lesson for you![edit]

Adding references can be easy[edit]

Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.

Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
  2. Then click on "Templates".
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the website link (web URL) becomes inactive (dead/link rot) at some point.
  4. Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
  5. Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
  6. Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
  7. Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.

You can read more about this on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv.
Hope this helps, --Gtwfan52 (talk) 18:08, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
