Hi. The redirect you just created was a double redirect e.g. Paratyphoid fever > Paratyphoid > Salmonella. These don't work properly and the user ends up at Paratyphoid. I changed the Paratyphoid fever so it goes direct to Salmonella. This happens all the time and usually gets fixed. It's not a problem but I just thought I would let you know for next time. Cheers. License tagging for Image:Philip Quast 2005.jpg[edit]

Yep. It's gone. There are a couple of speedy criteria I could have pursued--it wasn't a notable club, for instance, so it qualified for WP:CSD#A7, but I went with advertising, WP:CSD#11. If it comes back or if you run into other articles, you can mark an article for speedy deletion for any administrator's notice. The templates used for doing that are found here: Wikipedia:Speedy_deletion#Deletion_templates. You just choose the correct one and put it at the top of the article, and it will usually be evaluated within an hour. Request: Rank graphics, etc. in military biographies[edit]

Please discuss the inclusion of rank graphics in military biographies. I believe there was a recent discussion in the Military history WikiProject on the addition of graphics to the infoboxes. I believe that general rank graphics don't add; specific graphics that uniquely define a person, such as Medal of Honor or SMMC are exceptions. Hi Pen, thanks for your edit at Divisions of the Soviet Union. It's great when people take time to help out on such an esoteric (for English-speakers) topic. However one really has to be careful. There were two completely separate divisions, 27th Rifle Division, and, in the Guards Rifle Division series, which went up to 90 or 100, a separate formation, 27th Guards Rifle Division. Divisions were promoted to Guards status for exceptional valuable combat service. What you did was to link the 27th Rifle Division to the Guards formation, inaccurately, as well as fixing the link for the 27th Guards Rifle Division proper. Hi, I noticed you changed the name of this article. It had conformed to the practice observed at List of Italian divisions in WWII, which I had assumed was using the established naming style for military units. Military unit naming conventions[edit]

Please be aware, that, per WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME, "The disambiguator is not necessary in cases where the name of the country is already present in the name of the unit... or where the name is clearly unique". SAAF Squadron naming conventions[edit]

Hi there,

I've come across a few of your edits of South African Air Force squadron articles, in which you changed the format into the Commonwealth naming format. I'm afraid while this would seem like a logical change to make, it's incorrect. Unlike nearly all the other Commonwealth air forces, the South African Air Force does not use the 'No. x Squadron' format. The reason for the change appears to be related to the decision by the newly-elected Nationalist Party, in the early 1950s, to wean the South African military off its strong war-era ties to the British military. As part of this, the entire rank structure was overhauled, with the Commonwealth-style ranks (such as Wing Commander) being replaced with their American equivalents or with Army-style ranks, the uniform was changed and the squadron naming format was gradually altered. The end result was a curious amalgam of the Commonwealth and American naming formats, with the former services' preceding 'No.' being dropped in favour of the latter service's leading number style, but without the attending addition of the usual suffix (as in '42nd').

Proof of the SAAF's unique approach to squadron naming can be seen at the official SAAF website, in all SAAF-produced documentation and in coverage of the SAAF by local aviation publications. It is not contested in any serious form, so the use of the 'No. x Squadron' format is most certainly incorrect. Please don't change any more SAAF squadron articles back to the incorrect format. Re:Royal Navy ship formatting[edit]

I wish that there were more like you. You are right in regard to the format of the US ships in Wikipedia. To tell you the truth, I have no idea on how to develope a template which would recognize the italicizing of the ship names of the United Kingdom Royal Navy (alpha-numeric digits). Bombardment of Lowestoft and Yarmouth[edit]

Hi. I have just finished a run through editing this article adding information from a couple of other sources. You may want to have a look. I think it likely the account which you uploaded was based largely on the memoirs of Admiral Reinhard Scheer available at [1]. As such, this 1920's account was a little one-sided. There are still a few facts floating about which I can't source. (this is not to be taken as criticism for loading it: we have to start somewhere)Sandpiper (talk) 17:08, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To respond in kind: I notice various articles consistently use am or AM or a.m. or 15.00 etc and I havn't figured which is correct. ditto its not so much whether I prefer capitals as what its generally supposed to be. There is a big style guide somewhere suggesting minimal use of capitals, but many people stick them in wherever possible. The article isn't finished and corresponds to my general editing principle of facts first and sort out my bad typing after. This is made worse by uncertainty over which to use! There is a similar poster on the [Raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby] page, so someone else got the idea first: I was thinking of finding a zepelin, but havn't managed a relevant picture of a real one. Also there are lots of pictures of seydlitz damaged after Jutland, but I havn't found one of the mine damage. It still really wants something like a contemporary picture of the towns attacked.
As to context, I think several of these battle articles lack context: The books on the subject do much better and set things in their time and in other events, but we risk missing this because each article is a bit isolated on just its own topic. I have been trying to make them flow together better with background about events. Similarly, trying to get some biography on the main officers concened on each side. I am still a bit bothered by some of ths stuff in Scheer's account: it was written close to the events by someone with a case to make about how well he did/justify his actions, so although it is interesting to get a first hand view from the German side he might have not have been completely truthfull? The other sources are in English, and while they ough to be unbiased accounts, there is that problem about victors writing the offical history. Re "Navy list"[edit]

Redirects[edit]

I saw this edit and wish to make a comment. Redirects are not redundant links. The whole point of them is that often there is no one correct name for an article, and depending on circumstances, different names can be used. That is why we have redirects. For example First World War and World War I are just as valid as is Great War, or Third Reich and Nazi Germany, none of these links need to be "fixed". I have just finished writing an article on Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Ormond, for much of his life he was known by the title Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, so if one is writing an article that mentions the man before the creation of the Earldom of Ormond, then referring to him as "Earl of Angus" is correct and linking to the article via that redirect is the correct thing to do. It is also the most practical as the spelling of Ormonde [sic] varies from source to source.

Anyway I think you could make more useful contributions to the project than changing links like Second World War to "[[World War II|Second World War]]" as redirects are cheap and work efficiently. -- PBS (talk) 03:15, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The reason we make intentional links to disambiguation pages redirect through "Foo (disambiguation)" redirects is so those pages do not show up on the list of pages needing repair. Just thought you'd be interested. I saw a newspaper article about V-J Day or, more specifically, one of several military units known as the Triple Nickels. Finding out how Wikipedia covered the Triple Nickels proved much more complicated than I thought. It seems there were several different redirects depending on how the term was spelled. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians[edit]

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive[edit]

Hey y'all, the April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive begins at 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2021 and runs through 23:59 UTC on April 31, 2021. Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards.
