User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#Possible_paid_editing_violation – Can you please visit Jimbo's talk page and tell them more about "Wiki Strategies"? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 20:18, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Michael, thanks for the note, and for encouraging people to bring any concerns to me directly! I can't say I see a lot of benefit to jumping into the discussion on Jimmy's talk page, but I'm certainly willing to answer questions about my work. I'm not sure what the specific concerns are, but two things might be relevant: I haven't edited Wikipedia articles on behalf of my clients, and I only work with clients that agree in advance to clearly disclose their COI when making any edits. I'd also encourage anyone interested in how I approach my work to take a look at my blog, my Twitter streams (under my personal name and my business name), my Quora account, the Outreach wiki, Meta, WikiEducator. I tend to be pretty transparent about my work (to the extent time permits!) and tend to use the same username most places. Also, for whatever it's worth, working with corporate clients seeking to influence articles about themselves is a pretty tiny percentage of the work I do, and not something I'm actively seeking out these days. I'm much more engaged in the education and non-profit areas. -Pete (talk) 00:47, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Your support

Hello, I see you are an electrical engineer. I am electrical engineer myself and I've proposed a new wikiproject, Electrical Engineering. Here is the link. I would like to ask your support. Please do participate in the discussion. Thank you. Shriram (talk) 15:16, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Your HighBeam account is ready!

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:56, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikiproject OER

Hey there! I just wanted to touch base about the OER wikiproject that you're working on. I'm with The Saylor Foundation and we've actually already been looking at some of these pages in addition to some other WP-related work we've been doing. So, I wanted to let you know that we're definitely active and interested in participating in this effort. My only concern arises from the possible COI concerns that may crop up. While improving these pages in general is certainly not an issue, I wonder if perhaps those of us working with particular organizations might take care of adding information about one another so as to distance ourselves at least one level from potentially self-promoting edits. Obviously we all believe we're adhering to NPOV, but better safe than sorry. I'd love to hear about any other plans or discussion that's happening related to this! Cheers, MyNameWasTaken (talk) 17:34, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

MSU Research Questions

Hello, I am involved with a research project for Michigan State University and am wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions regarding tool sets on Wikipedia. What were the tools you mainly used prior to becoming an admin, and after becoming an admin? Here is a link to the project if you are interested Wikipedia:United States Education Program/Courses/Wiki-Project Management (Jonathan Obar) , and if you have any questions please let me know. Thanks! Ltezl (talk) 22:17, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

AN/I

I'm not exactly sure how your name came up, but it's there now at WP:AN/I#User:Cla68 advertising his services as a paid Wikipedia editor so I figured I'd let you know. --OnoremDil 23:33, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Funny, I was actually just dropping by to let you know I'd used you as an example again, in a different discussion. I'm sure there are other people whose user pages would serve as examples just as well, but yours was the first one to spring to mind. I am not suggesting that you need to change your user page, I'm simply using it to help people focus the discussion a bit more. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 20:37, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you both for the notes. I've looked through both cases. Glad to know, if nothing else, that my user page presents a useful example for discussion. For what it's worth: I don't regard my mentioning my work here as advertising, but as part of telling my Wikipedia story. I think it's useful for readers interested in me, to know about it among the other things I've done here. (Please note that it's mentioned in text, at the end of a pretty straightforward bio -- not in a big bright box, or anything like that.)
Also, in case it's helpful in any way, I just checked -- this year, about 7% of my web sites's visitors have clicked through from Wikipedia. Not sure what that might prove, but there it is :)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:28, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Hand-coding

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Greetings from WikiProject Open Access

SEM of bacteriophages.

Dear Pete,

it is now one year since WikiProject Open Access was started by User:Bluerasberry on January 10, 2012. Since then, the project has advanced modestly, but we have not interacted much. For the coming year, we certainly want to improve on that.

We also plan to overhaul the project pages to make them more conducive to collaboration, and we are pondering the idea of expanding the concept of a WikiProject Open Access to projects other than the English Wikipedia, e.g. to other languages or to Wikimedia Commons. You are warmly invited to add your voice to all that. We would also appreciate if you would share some of your OA-related activities by way of our news ticker or via the monthly Open Access report that is part of the GLAM newsletter (to which you can subscribe here), or as you see fit otherwise.

As a visual token of the anniversary, I am adding today's Open Access File of the Day. Feel free to nominate files yourself. As of today, commons:Category:Open access (publishing) contains more than 15,000 files, of which about 2/3 are video and sound files uploaded by the Open Access Media Importer.

Thanks for being part of the project, and looking forward to more interaction. With a smile, -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 23:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia edit-thon: Saturday, February 9, 2013

WIKIPEDIA EDIT-ATHON!
You're invited to the upcoming Wikipedia edit-athon, scheduled for Saturday, February 9 from 2–5pm in Old Town. Sponsored by Wiki Strategies and Prichard Communications, the event will begin with an introduction to Wikipedia, followed by an edit-a-thon focused on Portland's food scene, all things that "Keep Portland Weird", and local startup businesses.
Details and signup here!

If this looks okay, I will begin distribution. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:06, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

The simplified version looks great (I've replaced the draft here as well). --Another Believer (Talk) 20:19, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Ack, sorry, I got crossed up -- I thought I had replied to this! I think this looks great, thank you so much for making it. Yes, please do distribute -- but you might want to hold off until tomorrow, when the email announcement goes out. I doubt we'll get overwhelmed, but I don't want to "scoop" our sponsor :) -Pete (talk) 20:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Sounds great! --Another Believer (Talk) 20:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
I had planned to submit a geonotice request, yes. I can send a link in case you wish to update the wording for any reason. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:44, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
OK. I'm fine with however you want to word it -- you can look in the history of that page for how I've worded recent ones for Oakland and Boston. I think Aude's point is a good one, i.e. we should probably leave sponsorship names out of the geonotices for brevity. -Pete (talk) 21:46, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
See diff here. I've submitted one or two geonotice requests in the past; this one is worded similarly. I had not planned to include sponsors as I assumed this was considered advertising. Feel free to make any edits you see fit. I will start sending invitations tomorrow. Looking forward to the event! --Another Believer (Talk) 21:53, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

By the way, if you need any examples for the "Keep Portland Weird" portion of the event, here are three "interesting" Portland-related articles of mine: Horse rings in Portland, Kvinneakt, Pod (sculpture). The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement is another fun one. Also, I posted a few stub/start articles for PDX restaurants on the meetup page, as suggestions. --Another Believer (Talk) 22:05, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

All looks good! Some might feel the announcement is too long, but we can deal with that as it comes. Feel free to add these article ideas to the wiki page of course. Thanks! -Pete (talk) 22:11, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Arrgh!

This is a strange note to have to write. I went downtown this afternoon, parked near the Post Office, and walked to where I thought the meeting was. Nobody seemed to be about. I walked around, puzzled. After a while another person came down the street looking for the meeting. We exchanged introductions, tried to figure out what the problem was, and waited a while longer for others to show up. Eventually I said to User:EncMstr, the other person, that I was going home, and I did. Where he went, I don't know. Perhaps he found you. When I got home, I discovered to my horror that I had been looking for you at 322 N.W. Seventh rather than Sixth. I hope this mistake was a one-off and not the start of a trend. Sorry. Finetooth (talk) 03:47, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

I am so sorry we missed you both, was looking forward to meeting you. It's a shame, one of the topics someone proposed to work on was stream ecology -- so I suppose you were there in spirit! My apologies if I typed the wrong address somewhere. Hopefully we can make up for it before long! -Pete (talk) 17:03, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

WP help documents

Pete, I mentioned you in this discussion. I recall there was such a project and I thought you were the lead. If my memory is faulty, can you please point these folks in the right direction? Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 18:19, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Communication improvements

(Further to above) Peter, your name was mentioned at Jimbo's talk page

I have interest in this area, and just threw together User:Sphilbrick/Yes,_we_can_have_too_much_help. That doesn't look like overlap with OER, but maybe OER is only one aspect of your work. If you aren't the right person at WMF, do you know who is? I can ask Maggie or Philippe if you don't know.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:34, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Replying to you both in one -- the Wikimedia project I assisted on as a staffer was the Bookshelf Project, the results are here: http://bookshelf.wikimedia.org
SP, glad to know you are interested in improving opportunities to educate oneself about Wikipedia! Yes, Communicate OER is one of a number of projects I'm working on, but it's not really exclusive in its OER-ness. You may be interested in a six week course we are developing at Peer to Peer University's School of Open. Still in early development, but should be launching March 11. Let me know if you have thoughts/feedback/ideas! -Pete (talk) 18:57, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
A lot to digest. I see several things in the bookshelf I need/want to review. I'll get back to you.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Looking forward to hearing back from you. I should also point out this fellowship, which did result in a nice reorganization of the help pages on English Wikipedia. At the moment, I'm not sure the Bookshelf is the best place to focus -- some of those materials are worthwhile, but as you can see the page overall is pretty disorganized and difficult to navigate. I only linked that because DC was asking specifically about the work I did for WMF, and that was the relevant piece. (But it wasn't my project, I was only playing a small support role on that, contributing contents to a couple of the brochures.) -Pete (talk) 19:11, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Re: Edit-a-thon, party, and Legislative Data workshop March 14–15

Thank you for your invitation! The event sounds interesting, but since I live in California and won't be traveling anytime soon, I will be unable to make it. Hope the event goes well! --Kurykh (talk) 06:11, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Geonotice

Will do! Can you get me a rough area for the DC one? I'm always a little hazy on coordinates for the east coast. Andrew Gray (talk) 17:26, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

I went with [40, -74.9], [37.3, -78.3] which is the one currently being used for the DC history event - I hadn't realised it was already there to crib from :-) Does the rectangle on this look okay, or would you prefer larger? It catches Richmond and the outskirts of Philadelphia, but doesn't stretch as far down as Norfolk. Andrew Gray (talk) 17:38, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

indeed!

thanks. See my talk. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 01:11, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

inviting students to Editathon?

Hi Pete,

I am the campus ambassador for two classes in the Boston area this semester. One is in the middle of their wikipedia assignments and one will be starting soon. Some of the students might benefit from some extra help with syntax and formatting. Can I invite them to the March 9th editathon? There are about 25 in the Boston College class and I'm not sure how many in the Tufts/SMFA class (I am presenting there on Monday), but given that its a Saturday, I don't know how many will come. I'll try to make it myself if I'm on top of my own schoolwork.

Thanks, GabrielF (talk) 21:36, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

re:

Hi there :-) I knew about the course, I apologize I did not have the time to write/spam about it! About your request, please note that the page was fully in English, which is not actually a very good idea, plus there were only a few lines of real bio and all the rest were many kb of text about the course itself, which were not appropriate there - and I guess it is released under some free license but there was no mention of it too... So, if your students must edit their home wikis, please remember it should be done in their local language :-) plus they must use sandboxes not userpages for everything else which is not strictly related to who they are. The user was warned and the sysop offered to send him the text so that you can double check as well. Ps, i have some humble experiences of wiki teaching as well and I learned a few things from them: a) maybe live editing a real wikipedia can get really tough, it.wiki users are considering using test2 wiki for that and i really, really, really recommend informing the community in advance before starting any activity so that patrollers and sysops can "whitelist" a few usernames - b) wikipedias do have different rules and behaviors, you may find for example italian ones are particularly strict about certain aspects, from notability to what is suitable in a userpage. hi, i was lurking a little, good show. about videos in external links - smallbones has been using the Template:External Media, for example in A Visit from the Old Mistress. if it's about the article subject or section that might work better than an EL. I have been striving to improve the Oklahoma House of Representatives article. I would very much appreciate further suggestions, criticism and possibly a ratings update, if you are feeling froggy. Okheric (talk) 06:41, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
