Are you here because I have proposed the deletion of various reenactment society articles?

If you are here because of my proposing various article for deletion, let me explain...

I was drawn to the subject by the previous message on this page (if it's not above, it'll be in my archives) - and looked into this further.

If you want to "save" the article from deletion, there are two options:

  • for PRODs (proposed for deletion): remove the PROD notice, and add reliable sources which are independent of the subject - so no press releases, nothing from the group's website... and it needs to be significant coverage, not just a 1-sentence mention. Please note that if you remove the PROD notice without adding sources, I will take the article to AfD (see next section)
  • for AfD (Articles for deletion): do not remove the AfD notice! Contribute to the discussion linked in the article instead. Also, add reliable sources which are independent of the subject - so no press releases, nothing from the group's website... and it needs to be significant coverage, not just a 1-sentence mention

I have nothing against these articles - I have been surprised when looking for sources for some of them that there are none that aer suitable. I'd be quite happy for them to be saved because suitable references which show that they are notable are found! Before proposing for deletion, I am looking for sources, but not finding any.

Incidentally, if you are curious that a couple of them say "Even though I feel that this should meet the notability criteria...", this merely indicates that I have heard of them, so presumably they are more well known (I am not into this kind of thing)... it does not indicate that I think they are notable!

Regards, PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 18:51, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Wouldn't it of been more appropriate to use the Talk page on the various articles rather than AfD tag it? ie: WP:BEFORE
C. Consider whether the article could be improved rather than deleted.
If the article can be fixed through normal editing, then it is not a candidate for AfD.
If the article was recently created, please consider allowing the contributors more time to develop the article.
If an article has issues try first raising your concerns on the article's talk page, with the main contributors, or an associated WikiProject, and/or adding a cleanup tag, such as {{notability}}, {{hoax}}, {{original research}}, {{unencyclopedic}}, or {{advert}}; this ensures readers are aware of the problem and may act to remedy it.
If the topic is not important enough to merit an article on its own, consider merging or redirecting to an existing article
.--Blaene (talk) 15:40, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for commenting here, Blaene. Perhaps I could have discussed it on the relevant talk pages, however:
  1. The articles could not be fixed through normal editing (the wording and language were not the problem, notability and verification were)
  2. They were not recently created
  3. Yes, I could have raised a concern prior to AfDing - however, that point is now moot! However, I will bear it in mind for the future
  4. I could find not viable target for merging/redirecting to. Looking at List of historical reenactment groups, that already has so many redlinks (whereas where possible, a "list of" article should consist of links to Wikipedia articles) - having the odd redlink is OK (it can encourage people to create an article which has been 'missed off'), but this would merely add a brief mention of group on the list which is already arguably in contravention of Wikipedia conventions.
As you can see, I did consider the points in BEFORE (albeit not the "discuss on talk page" one, that was my bad!) - I never nominate an article for deletion without looking for sources, looking for a suitable redirect/merger destination, etc. My aim is not to delete articles (I prefer to keep those which I think can reasonably be improved), but to keep quality articles on Wikipedia. For all of those articles, I looked in Google News (not just recent but also the archives), Google Books and Google Scholar. I couldn't find sutiable sources (for example, with The Sealed Knot, in the news archives there were something like 300 hits - but they were not the significant coverage required - for example "John is a member of The Sealed Knot, who re-enact Civil War battles..." or "A demonstration was provided by The Sealed Knot, the Civil War reenactment group", with neither of these giving significant information about the group itself). Apart from the discussion point (which is a fair point), I think I did do everything else which BEFORE recommends.
I trust that this will show you that I am not the 'unreliable' editor which another editor connected with AfDs would have you believe. I may be mistaken with some/all of the AfDs (I make mistakes, I am human after all), but none of them were done maliciously, or without any thought. QR code

Heya Steve, I'm currently working on setting up a new offline community for meetups [Wikipedia] in my city. I was thinking of using QR codes for spreading the word. I was wondering whether you could perhaps link me to where you created your QR code, so I can embed text in it and use it for our promotion. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:14, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately I can't find the site - I can find plenty of QR code sites, but not the one that let you include a text phrase. I'll look again in a few days when I'm off work, if I get a chance -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 19:12, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
This isn't the one I used, but I does include text over the code - I've not tried it though: mojiq.kazina.com/ (it's in Japanese, but you should be able to work out the fields!) - you'll need to save the image and the crop it before using. - I found that via Lockergnome). It's not the site I used, but does a similar job PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 10:00, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you VERY VERY VERY much. : ) Cheers. Oh and can you help me out with my talk page? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:37, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

AN post regarding deletion of Miguel, Crown Prince of Portugal

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. Monty845 22:09, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello Phantomsteve,

This is regarding the deletion of the page for Easton Mountain: 04:08, 5 December 2011 Phantomsteve (talk | contribs) deleted "Easton Mountain" ‎ (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion (CSDH))

I believe this speedy deletion is incorrect. Easton Mountain is a non profit organization focused on gay spirituality. The purpose of this page is to provide information to the LGBTQ community on spirituality and activities at Easton Mountain. We are not promoting or selling any products or services. I don't see why you may have thought this was advertising. I can certainly information that may appear to be advertising, but I don't know what it may be since that was not the purpose of this page.

Can you clarify if it can be undeleted? I tried to do a page like the one for Omega, which is a similar organization http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Institute_for_Holistic_Studies

Thank you, Raul C. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rcastanon (talkcontribs) 04:19, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Raul. The purpose of that appeared to promote the organisatio - "The purpose of this page is to provide information to the LGBTQ community" seems to confirm that you are promoting the organisation - which is different to "trying to make money". However, if you can show that it meets the criteria for inclusion (and especially the criteria for organisations), along with reliable sources which are independent of the subject, we can discuss undeleting the article. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 04:24, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

(Personal attack removed) only wastes time when he/she posts unblock requests. This particular page was CSD'd before as G5, too. Banned means banned.Jasper Deng (talk) 04:30, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

The page is now protected from editing, and the unblock request dealt with. All's well with the world again! PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 04:37, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

participation of historians on dispute.

Good night. I think you have asked, very well in my opinion, help from historians specialized in portuguese medieval for the dispute about the article «Miguel, Crown Prince of Portugal». Can you ask, please, the help of any historians, not only these of medieval. I explain why: the essential question, there, is one of sources. And for such question any historian is able to respond. Hi,

The article I created about London Terrace apartment complex was not an ad or spam, I'm really not affiliated with it. It was once the largest apartment building in the world and is most likely the widest building in Manhattan. What can I do to prevent this deletion from occurring? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryohki98 (talkcontribs) 16:49, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for contacting me. The impression that it was promotional in nature was aided by the fact that the only links/references were to sites which would appear to advertise the apartments for rent. I could restore it, but there is a strong possibility that it would be proposed for deletion or listed at Articles for deletion (if not by myself, then by another editor). In order to minimise this risk, could you possibly explain which of the notability criteria it meets, and provide some reliable sources which are independent of the building which would verify this? Then we can go from there! Regards, PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 16:43, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Innovation First

Would you please kindly undelete Innovation First, Inc so I can fix it? --Astronouth7303 (talk) 00:03, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for contacting me. To avoid wasting anyone's time, could you possibly answer these questions:
  1. Why are they 'important' or 'significant'? (that was why it was deleted)
  2. What notability criteria do they meet (especially the criteria for businesses and organisations?)
  3. Do you have reliable sources which are independent of the company which would verify that they meet the notability criteria mentioned in question 2, and if so, could I have some examples.
I don't want to restore it only to have to take it to AfD because questions 2 and 3 are not addressed in the fixed version - that would be a waste of your time and mine! If you can show the criteria they meet, I'd be happy to restore it PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 00:31, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Ok, could you move it to my user space so I can work on answering those questions? Thank you. --Astronouth7303 (talk) 00:35, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
With respect, I don't think that's a good idea. You should be able to tell me which criteria they meet, and also provide multiple reliable/independent sources to demonstrate that notability. If you haven't got that information, then if you find it and let me know the details, we can discuss restoring and/or userfying it at that time. Dear PhantomSteve,

This refers to the article on Desh Darpan which was put up for Speedy Deletion.

I request you to kindly un delete it as the article refers to a heritage newspaper which is being run till today not as a profit making unit, but rather as a reminder of a great part of Indian history and specifically as the first Punjabi language newspaper to be published ever.

Desh Darpan holds great emotional and sentimental feeling for lakhs of Punjabis who consider the newspaper to be their bond to the freeedom struggle as well as a link to their mother tongue. With the growth of globalisation and the Punjabi's tendency to settle and thrive anywhere, the importance of Desh Darpan is emphasised.

I do hope that you shall reconsider and review your decision.

Kind regards,

Amitabh Luthra

Hi Amitabh, thanks for contacting me. When I saw that the article had been tagged for speedy deletion, I looked at it, and agreed with the reason for tagging. "Promotion" does not necessarily refer to "profit-making" or "money-making" activities. "Promotion" as far as it is meant on Wikipedia is the use of an article to make the subject better known.
The language used was far from encyclopedic ("A spark was ignited in 1930 by Netaji Subhash Chandra"; "it was important to not let the brave soldiers feel isolated"; "This mouth piece of the Punjabi community was brought to life"; " is now being lovingly cared for") and in fact, not neutral. That in itself is not a cause for deletion, but the tone of the article was one of promoting the publication rather than giving neutral information.
I have had a look for some information at reliable sources which are independent of the newspaper. News-wise, I only found one (here) from 1941, about the editor being acquited of promoting class hatred, and minor coverage elsewhere.
As it would require a complete rewrite to prevent it being promotional, I consider (upon reflection) that the deletion was correct. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 05:03, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Admin coaching

Hey there, I saw at Wikipedia:Admin coaching that you were coached by Juliancolton in your pre-RfA days. I'm not sure if you know, but Julian's decided to take a break from admin coaching and had to let me go as his 'student' after we got quite a way down the coaching process. As you are probably very familiar with Julian's methods, do you think you might like to step in and take me from where Julian left off? If not, that's OK - just let me know :) Arctic Night 17:14, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

I need to take myself off that list - I'll do that next time I log on at home - but real-life (work, family, my personal wiki, family history research, etc) has limited the time I have to work on Wikipedia. As such, I am going to have to decline your request. Regards, -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 01:06, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
Not a problem. Of course, if you ever feel up to the task, let me know :) Arctic Night 10:40, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Robert Uhlmann

Hi, I'm writing to you because I see that you helped mediate last month on the Robert Uhlmann page -- which is a redirect page to Robert W. Uhlmann. I'm actually writing an article on a different Robert Uhlmann - a notable American media industry entrepreneur, songwriter, and music publisher. You can see my User Page draft here: User:Expewikiwriter/RobtUhlmn. So, what should I do? Can I place my Robert Uhlmann article on this Robert Uhlmann page? Or do I need to create another page, such as Robert Uhlmann (media industry entrepreneur)? Please advise. Thanks so much!!! Expewikiwriter (talk) 01:19, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

I do remember a Robert Uhlman, who was involved in the music of the 2005 Indian Hindi film Bluffmaster, along with Arash (entertainer). Is the same? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:17, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
I'll try to look at this in the next couple of days -- PhantomSteve.alt/ talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 05:23, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
I see you have moved it to Robert Uhlmann (media executive). I have changed Robert Uhlmann to a disambiguation page - I do not see that either of the Uhlmanns are the primary topic - and added hatnotes linking to the other article on both of them. If you want to have the redirect at User:Expewikiwriter/RobtUhlmn deleted, just change it to {{db-u1}} and a passing admin will delete it. This is not strictly required, but it tidies the place up, in my view! Regards, PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 11:17, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of The Story So Far (band)

The band's 2011 release Under Soil and Dirt has been gaining quite a bit of traction and is being featured on many end-of-year best albums lists. They are also being featured on more and more prominent pop-punk tours. They are definitely not an irrelevant band and the deletion of their wikipedia page was uncalled for as they're only gaining headway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.92.193.242 (talk) 22:53, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. However, to be blunt, nothing you say here leads me to think that the article The Story So Far (Band) was incorrectly deleted. Let's look at the points you make:
  1. "Gaining quite a bit of traction"
  2. "Being featured on many end-of-year best albums lists"
    • Being mentioned in a list does not meet the criteria for "significant" coverage. Of course, if any of these gave in-depth coverage of the band as well (and not based on the band's own publicity materials and press releases), let me know so I can look into that - but as I say, being included in a list of albums is not enough
  3. "They are also being featured on more and more prominent pop-punk tours"
    • Being associated with notable acts (you don't give examples, but I assume that's what you are saying) does not make them notable. The draft article mentioned genre heavyweights Set Your Goals and Senses Fail - they both have articles here, but, again, being on tour with them does not make The Story So Far notable. The sources for both those bands do not appear to mention TSSF - apart from a brief mention of their name on the tour - and that was by someone whose profile on absolute punk (which appears to be a blog) says they are a student, rather than a professional journalist.
  4. "they're only gaining headway"
    • This is like saying they "are up-and-coming" - not sufficient to meet the notabilit criteria.
  5. The text of the deleted article mentioned "widespread critical acclaim", but I can't find this acclaim at reliable, independent sources.
All in all, I see no evidence (and can't find any in my searches) that they meet the general notability criteria and especially the criteria for bands. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 03:53, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of "Air Cycle Corporation"

Hi Phantomsteve--you deleted a page I created, "Air Cycle Corporation," because of an expired PROD. Previously however, after its original deletion review, the page was restored to my userspace [1] for userfication, I addressed the concerns raised in the review, and it was approved for the Wikipedia mainspace [2] by editor Uzma Gamal, who said that "AfD issues no longer apply." The original deletion issue was getting rid of insignificant sources and increasing good sources, which was addressed. A couple days ago, editor Fastily deleted the article for the same reason you did, but restored it since the article has been reviewed and approved by Uzma Gamal. Would you please undelete the article? I'll list it at WP:DRV to avoid this issue in the future, unless there's a better way to clear this up. Thanks.

Synthality (talk) 17:59, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm confused... I can't see any major changes from the version that was deleted at AfD:
  • the triblocal.com reference was removed
  • the aircycle.com reference was removed
  • the greenlodgingnews.com reference replaced with one from sciencedaily.com
  • the fmlink.com reference was removed
  • the phrase regarded as the industry standard for drum-top lamp crushing systems was replaced with The Bulb Eater is designed to reduce the cost of recycling fluorescent lamps for large facilities
As it was substantially the same as before, I felt that the PROD was accurate, and the deletion valid. Nothing has been added to demonstrate that it meets WP:CORP. If you feel that my deletion was unwarranted, then please feel free to take it to Deletion Review, referring to this discussion. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 00:23, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
On a procedural note, normally a contested PROD like this would be restored with no discussion, but in this case I could have speedily deleted the article under criteria G4:Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion (as the version I deleted is "a sufficiently identical and unimproved copy"). I could have procedurally restored it, and then straight away deleted it under G4. However, as I say, please feel free to go to deletion review - if you do so, please notify me per the instructions there. PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 00:27, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
