George Withy page deletion[edit]

Hi

I have received notification that the page I created for "George Withy" has been deleted, due to copyreght issues - but I had submitted an e-mail to "permissions-en@wikimedia.org" to confirm that I was the copyright owner and that it could be used. Is it possible for me to re-submit the materail again?

Many thanks

Thank you for your message I will check on this and get back.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 13:29, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: it looks like the article was created at George withy and there was an OTRS template placed on the talk page (Talk:George_withy). To correct the capitalization, the article was moved to George Withy, but the move didn't also grab the talk page comments. So when the deleting admin came across it, they had no idea there was an OTRS ticket pending. I'd be inclined to move towards recreation, but I haven't looked deeply into it. -Philippe (talk) 17:01, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Harborough AC page deletion[edit]

Hi Pharaoh of the Wizards,

I've just received an email saying that a page I am in the middle of writing has been recommended for deletion under rule G11. I'm a little confused (this is the first page I've ever tried to create), and am not 100% clear on what I have done wrong, or how to have the page created if I'm not allowed to do it? It will be a page on the history and development of Harborough Athletics Club, and will be along the same lines as those pages for other athletics clubs, football teams etc.

Could you please give me a bit of guidance over how to proceed?

Kind Regards.

Harborough AC (talk) 15:01, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your message.Your Harborough AC seems to indicate that you represent Harborough Athletics Club and editing on behalf of a club is not allowed.I see you have been blocked .Either you can create new account or request for a change of your name. Please go through First Article.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 17:01, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion for Specimens of Archaeopteryx[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the notification. The text in this article was copied over from the main Archaeopteryx article and not written by me, with the intention to split off the long "History of discovery" section into a new article. Archaeopteryx is currently listed as a featured article, so I am surprised that copyrighted text has been present in this article for so long. How should the original copyrighted text in the main Archaeopteryx article be dealt with? -Ferahgo the Assassin (talk) 17:56, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

...Though now I'm wondering whether that external page copied the Wikipedia article on Archaeopteryx. I guess we'll have to scrutinize the edit history to see which came first... -Ferahgo the Assassin (talk) 18:02, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for spamming you with comments, but I've just checked the edit history for Archaeopteryx and this is the last revision from 2010. The external site you linked to is "copyrighted" 2011. I think it's highly likely that this site copied text from the Archaeopteryx article, and not the other way around, and the copyright flag only popped up after I made the new article with the same text. The other sections on that website (Paleobiology, Controversies) etc. also appear to be directly copied from Wikipedia, which can be confirmed by looking at an older revision (earlier than 2011) of the page. However, I am unfamiliar with this particular kind of situation and am not sure how to proceed. -Ferahgo the Assassin (talk) 18:09, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your message.I have asked an admin Moonriddengirl (talk · contribs) who is encyclopedia of copyright to look into it.The user works extensively in copyright. They claim copyright we can check the website http://archeopteryx.info/history_of_discovery.html They claim copyright for their article Copyright © 2011. Hello Pharaoh of the Wizards. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of User:Americasstudies, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: it's a curiously chosen username, but the page makes clear this is an individual, and what she says about herself is entirely within the spirit of WP:UPYES. WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

I was surprised that it was approved for deletion at all in the first place. All the voting was based on personal opinion and ignore Wikipedia own policy of not using subjective opinionated. "...If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article or stand-alone list...." The article was covered by [BBC] and several others countries news network. If you ever raised it up, just give a hoot, I will support your proposal. Yosri (talk) 15:29, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A big NPT update[edit]

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

  • Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
  • Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! Further questions or issues to the usual address. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 17:16, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

== Your HighBeam account is ready! ==

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

New Pages update[edit]

Hey Pharaoh of the Wizards/Archive6 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Matter[edit]

Hello, came to my attention you marked these changes as vandalism: [2] Well, I'm the author. All changes were grammatic issue and I'd like to remember that the word added (and the ones changed) are foreseen in multiple web dictionaries, and, although I haven't referred to them, you'd feel free to have done this instead of marking the whole contribution as a vandal act. Still, I'd like to know if it's the only reason those changes were marked as vandalism. Thanks Paulomunir (talk) 01:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Antony Price[edit]

Dear Pharaoh of the Wizards,

I'm sorry for what happened re: Antony Price article.

I'm very new to Wikipedia and I feel that the route of the problem was that I should of been more well read on it before I put the Antony Price article up.

When I saw the article was removed it made me angry and I hastily sent a message to Sarahj2107 saying ploitely please do not remove it.

I felt the responses were a bit harsh and our communication became heated however neither of us were abusive to each other, however I felt it was not pleasant as I felt bullied and I was not getting a clear understanding of why the article was being removed.

I will not edit the article again and I will submit another article with links to all statements and references at later date for your consideration.

Again, it is not in my character to "vandalise" anything and I was horrified that was what I classed as doing, however I have to accept that if I did not read up on the rules. I just find Wikipeida in the way it laid out etc not very user friendly and also working a full-time job I just don't have much time to experience it. However it a learning curve.

So please except my apologies and I will endeavour not to create havoc.

Kind Regards,

Gavin

Hi. When you report someone to WP:UAA, can you include an example as to why you've reported them there please? If a user picks a company name, for example, and then does no editing on behalf of the company, this is a violation but not a serious one - and as such can be amicably discussed with user or discussed at WP:RFCN. New Page Triage/New Pages Feed[edit]

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:28, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Stacher[edit]

Explain to me how what I did was vandalism, go on. "Vandalism" is how the article looks like now. "Jewish" should point to "Jewish Mafia" in this context, not to "Jews." So please, tell me how pointing a link to its correct location is "vandalism." Including him under "American Jews" is not vandalism either. I am going to revert your edit back.
