You put a lot of work into this article which has been nominated for deletion. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cost of moving in the United Kingdom I think it should stay. Tomintoul (talk) 19:00, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks but I only put the work in to make it less awful. I see that the article might serve a function in a different type of publication but I don't believe that it should exist here. Sorry. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:43, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Record offices /archives

Hallo, I've seen a lot of your new stubs at Category:Stubs (and can't just think which stub to give them), but could I suggest that you add them to Category:County record offices in England, since it exists. It's also dead easy to create a new category in an existing hierarchy, so it would be very constructive to create a new "Category:Archives in Xxxshire" as you go along, where it doesn't exist - just copy and modify the one for Cambridgeshire, for example (looking at other examples, some have parent cats "Buildings and structures", others have "Education", Cambs has both; all seem to have "Culture" and "Archives in England"). I'll do West Sussex in a moment. PamD 10:04, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

West Sx cat created, and added to West Sussex Record Office. PamD 10:07, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I added "History of ...". Philafrenzy (talk) 11:41, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I followed on with all the rest I could see in stubs cat and parent "Archives in England" cat, creating new cats for several counties, and finding a couple where there was already a county cat you hadn't used. See my contribs list for details. (And if it weren't for that I'd have got out on an errand before the rain started this morning, as I planned to: I got sidetracked, as so often happens with Wikipedia editing, and got wet instead.) PamD 14:53, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I have often wondered if there is a correlation between the weather and Wikipedia editing, but you seem to prove it is higher when it is dryer and less when wet, the reverse of what I had expected! I will try to do some more of those record offices later. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:08, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Durham County Record Office, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Durham. Proposed deletion of Paul Kluke

The article Paul Kluke has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Request for deletion of section page Raad Mohiaddin

Dear Phila,

Thank you for your message and thank you for contacting me. I hope I have written this in the correct section. My reason for flagging the page and making the request for section deletion is based on the Wikipedia statement that 'the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment.’ This article will cause significant emotional and mental suffering to the individual it is written about since it publicizes a private event in the private life of an individual who is not otherwise in the public eye. Claireraph (talk) 00:24, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your message. I understand what you say but I don't honestly see how the matter can be regarded as private when the Evening Standard, the British Medical Journal and other sources have already reported it in detail. We only summarise what is said elsewhere. Other material has been included in the article to keep it balanced including Dr Mohiaddin's professional positions, award and publications. We could consider expanding that content if you have some suggestions but I am afraid we can't only include the nice things about people. Sorry. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:38, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

German Historical Institute London

There were over 1,000 uncategorized pages in the batch I was working on yesterday — and because I wasn't able to get through them all in the amount of time I had available to dedicate to Wikipedia, there are still almost 500 in today's batch. It's great that you did apply categories, but it's not appropriate to snark at me for adding the {{uncategorized}} tag instead of directly adding categories myself — I have an obligation to get the list of uncategorized articles down to absolute zero, but I do not have a responsibility to manually find and apply categories to over 1,000 articles myself instead of applying the standard maintenance tag that exists for that purpose. So thank you for applying the categories, but the snarky accusation you directed at me for just doing my damn job was unwarranted and unfair. Bearcat (talk) 16:01, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Sorry, it was a bit snarky of me. Thanks for your work but wouldn't it be easier to add one category using hotcat rather than adding one tag. Takes the same amount of time but fixes the problem which tagging doesn't. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:31, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
Well, the thing is that first I would have to know which categories do or don't exist for it to be filed in. I can and do skip the tag and just directly HotCat a category if I come across an article where I already know the appropriate category or categories — for instance, if I come across an article about a Canadian novelist, because I work with those categories regularly I already know exactly where to stick the article without having to look up what does or doesn't exist at what spelling or wording. But if it involves categories I'm not already directly familiar with, then the amount of research time I would have to devote to locating the categories turns it into two or three minutes per page instead of two seconds. Bearcat (talk) 17:41, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
I infer you are not using hotcat? It is such a huge time saver and reduces the process to seconds. I don't believe you need to be exact, just close enough and others will refine, e.g. authors rather than authors from somewhere in particular. Hotcat tells you whether the category exists so you don't make mistakes. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
I see you did say you were using HotCat in your reply. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:26, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

One of my pet peeves is Biography or Life sections in articles that are themselves biographies or just one very long paragraph for the whole article, so I normally break it up somehow. The idea is that although those sections are usually short, they invite an expansion. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:37, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Cambridge history...

You accidentally undid my edit in which I put the two parts of vol 6 into right order - I leave it to you to fix to avoid edit conflicts. PamD 11:48, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. I would have spotted it eventually, in a year or two at the latest. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:50, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
In delving around turning Candice Goucher from a redlink to blue in the article, I've found that there are a lot of references to "The Cambridge History of the World" (eg in Craig_Benjamin#Books, so it looks as if CUP changed their mind over the title at a lateish stage. I've made redirects from that version, with and without "The ". Will have a go at Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks, though I really ought to be doing other things today... Wikipedia, the infinite time-sink. But it's more constructive than playing patience/solitaire or slumping in front of the television. PamD 12:49, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Probably took them 10 years to produce it. I note at least one of the authors is now dead. Probably died from the effort of writing it. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:54, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Merry Wiesner-Hanks now has an article (she doesn't seem to use the "E" except in publications, though of course there's a redirect from it!); just got to finish off Journal of Global History which she edits and then maybe I'll get round to sorting out domestic paperwork as I promised myself for the day! PamD 14:02, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Excellent work. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:10, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
And Journal of Global History led me to make an article for the wonderfully-named William Gervase Clarence-Smith, who co-edits it with our friend Merry. Enough for one day! PamD 15:11, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Great stuff. I see you wisely always leave a red link for tomorrow. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:17, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

The Postal Museum

Dear Phil,

I recently became the Digital Media Officer for the British Postal Museum & Archive and I notice that you have been responsible for a lot of improvements to our Wikipedia page in recent years, so thank you very much. On February 4 we re-branded ourselves as The Postal Museum, as part of our project to open a new museum and visitor attraction next year, and I wondered whether you might be interested in updating our page with the latest information. The existing content is largely still valid, just needing the name changing and the details of our project adding in (which are available on postalmuseum.org). I hope it isn't rude to ask - I would be very happy to do this myself but believe it might be considered a COI.

Many thanks, Postalmuseumdmo (talk) 11:14, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Thomas Thomas (architect)

I've changed that "Selected works" (previously "Works") heading on Thomas Thomas (architect) back to the original "Notable works". The chapels on the list are all listed buildings, therefore recognised as important, and are confident that Thomas is the architect. They were originally added because they were notable. "Selected" gives the impression they were chosen based on some sort of subjective decision (I hate the "Selected works" sections on artists' biographies for example). Hope that makes sense, or otherwise we'll all be going round in circles with this ;) Sionk (talk) 11:55, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

I don't feel strongly about it but doesn't the word notable imply subjectivity as much as selected? You say they are all listed but not one has an article. A few articles about the more significant ones would certainly support the claim that they are notable. By the way, is there a non advertising supported source other than http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/ ? They must be drawing their information from some other database. Regarding "selected works", I believe it is used in order to avoid the misleading impression that is otherwise given that the list of works is complete. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:07, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
I don't think many people would dispute whether listed buildings are notable (the USA are way ahead of the UK in writing stub articles on many buildings on the Heritage Register). To be honest, I didn't particularly mind "Works" with the {{Incomplete list}} template. But in line with normal Wikipedia practise I'm quite a strong fan of listing things that are provenly notable. British Listed Buildings generally reproduce the Cadw listing text, but Cadw generally doesn't have this available online. Sionk (talk) 12:18, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
Pity that Cadw don't do that. I hope you will create some of the missing articles. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:28, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Turner painting

You probably want to have a look at this latest upload c:File:J.M.W. Turner - Dolbadarn Castle - Study for Diploma Picture.jpg. I was going to rename it but it looks all wrong. I found a much higher resolution version at http://www.artfund.org/assets/art-news/2013/must-see-turners/must-see-turners-3b.jpg which looks right. Shall I upload it and rename or do you want to upload it and I'll move it later. ww2censor (talk) 17:42, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

That must have been during his red phase! I reverted it and the name changed then back again. The name is right because it is a study (http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-dolbadarn-castle-study-for-diploma-picture-tw0005) not the final work. Based on the Tate image, I suspect the current one is closer to the original than the art fund pic. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:58, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
Here's the final work: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J.M.W._Turner_Dolbadern_Castle,_1800.jpg which is twice as big. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:07, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Early life of Dorothy Galton correction

There looks to be an error in the early life of Dorothy Galton: "...the Labour Party from 1920–25 and then in 1926-26 as private secretary...", should this be "...the Labour Party from 1920–25 and then in 1926 as private secretary..."? I didn't add the content. You removed sourced material written by the subject herself. I just put it back and have been trimming it as well. Also it's not defamatory. Please don't threaten me in this way. It's not the right way to resolve things. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:14, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
John, are you aware that the material in this article was not added by me and was sourced to an article written by the subject herself? In addition, while it may be revealing it is in no sense defamatory in my view. I should be pleased to have your views. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:24, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I stand by my position that this is celebrity gossip on a living person sourced to a tabloid journal; right in the centre of WP:BLPSOURCES. If it is important to you to add this material or restore it, you will need to find better sources. If no such sources exist it cannot be there. --John (talk) 21:55, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
John, you haven't addressed the fact that the subject of the article is the source or that the material is not defamatory. I should also appreciate an acknowledgement that the threat of blocking me was a little heavy-handed since I did not add the material in the first place and was in the process of trimming it to match the actual statements by Singleton.
