Advice - notability and COI[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a notice-board, and is selective about subjects for articles - it does not aim to have articles about every software product or company, any more than for every person, music album, book, band... The criterion used is called Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about?

It may well be that a new product is not able to do that, but it is not the job of an encyclopedia to help publicise new things.

I presume you are the same person as user SecureOD (talk). That's OK - the block notice invited you to set up an individual account - but as you are connected with the product, you have from Wikipedia's point of view a WP:Conflict of interest - your interest is to boost your product, ours is an impartial, neutral encyclopedia. That means you should be very careful about your edits, and we will be cautious about accepting them. See WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.

You pointed to two other articles. We know that many of the 3,700,000 articles are not up to standard, so the argument "What about that other article?" is not accepted - each submission is considered on its own merits.

Think hard about notability, because if you cannot demonstrate it, you will be wasting your time. See WP:42 for what it means. Then, if you want to go ahead, read WP:Your first article and make a draft article in your user space, by going to Help:Userspace draft. That will lead you to submit it at WP:Articles for creation, where either it will be accepted or you will be given more feedback. When you write it, take great care not to make it promotional - Wikipedia is very resistant to anything that looks like an attempt to advertise or promote. Don't address potential customers: "With SOD, you'll have a datacenter to run your software... " You are not here to sell the product, your are not writing for the company, you are writing for Wikipedia about the product, no opinions, no unsupported praise, just a neutral description, plain facts cited to reliable sources. Deletion discussion about Secure Online Desktop[edit]

Hello, Piergiorgio.venuti, and thanks for contributing to Wikipedia!

I wanted to let you know that some editors are discussing at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Secure Online Desktop whether the article Secure Online Desktop should be in Wikipedia. I encourage you to comment there if you think the article should be kept in the encyclopedia.

The deletion discussion doesn't mean you did something wrong. In fact, other editors may have useful suggestions on how you can continue editing and improving Secure Online Desktop, which I encourage you to do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the Help Desk.

Thanks again for your contributions! Dennis Brown (talk) 11:27, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't spam, Secure Online Desktop company implement SOD concept, a virtual computer in Internet., 12:54, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Secure Online Desktop requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. andy (talk) 12:01, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please read WP:Copyvio. It isn't enough to change some text up. Once you have violated copyright by wholesale "taking" someone else's work and claiming it as your own, changing up a few words doesn't change that. There are strict policies on that here, and while I'm sure your intentions weren't bad, you really need to familiarize yourself with the policy before contributing.
