Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf6) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on May 22. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on May 27, and all Wikipedias on May 29 (calendar).
- MediaViewer will be enabled on all Wikisource wikis on May 29, and on the German (de) and English (en) Wikipedias on June 3. Feedback is welcome.
VisualEditor news

- A bug that caused files not to appear after saving edits in the
File:namespace was fixed last week. [5] [6] - VisualEditor tabs will no longer appear in namespaces where VisualEditor is disabled. [7] [8]
- It is now possible to edit inline images with VisualEditor; many minor bugs related to images have also been fixed. [9]
- VisualEditor will no longer convert spaces to underscores inside links to pages in namespaces that include spaces in their names. [10]
Future software changes
- Wikimedia Labs will stop working for about 10 minutes around 18:00 UTC on May 30 due to a server upgrade. [11]
- It will soon no longer be possible to upload different files under the same name at the same time using the UploadWizard tool. [12] [13]
- Links to TIFF, DjVu or PDF files created with the syntax
[[File:Name.ext|thumb|page 15 is my favourite]]will now show an image caption if there is any text after page number; previously they caused the given page to appear. Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf7) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on May 29. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on June 3, and to all Wikipedias on June 5 (calendar).
- CirrusSearch was enabled as the primary search method on all Wikipedias with less than 100,000 pages on May 30. [19]
VisualEditor news
- Templates that redirect to other templates now get the TemplateData of their target. [20]
- The toolbar of the PageTriage extension will no longer be visible after you save an edit with VisualEditor. [21] [22]
- VisualEditor now checks if your browser supports SVG files to avoid displaying broken icons. [23]
- There is now a new type for TemplateData parameters:
datefor dates and times in the ISO 8601 format. [24]
Future software changes
- MediaViewer will be enabled on the German (de) and English (en) Wikipedias on June 3. Feedback is welcome.
- You will soon see a warning if you visit a contributions page for a user that does not exist. [25] [26]

Problems

The first edition of The Pulse has been released. The Pulse will be a regular newsletter documenting the goings-on at WPMED, including ongoing collaborations, discussions, articles, and each edition will have a special focus. That newsletter is here.
The newsletter has been sent to the talk pages of WP:MED members bearing the {{User WPMed}} template. To opt-out, please leave a message here or simply remove your name from the mailing list. Because this is the first issue, we are still finding out feet. Things like the layout and content may change in subsequent editions. Please let us know what you think, and if you have any ideas for the future, by leaving a message here.

RfC for Media Viewer[edit]
Pine, bringing the 'media viewer' issue to Rfc is a good idea. My only suggestion here is to simplify the layout. Instead of having separate Enable, Disable, and Neutral fields, I would have people simply enter Enable, Disable or Neutral and leave a short comment after the vote. I went ahead and did this before people start voting. Hope you agree. If not, go ahead and revert I guess, but I think we're going to have to try and keep this one simple, otherwise it'll be all over the map. Yes? -- Gwillhickers (talk) 15:51, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

- No problems. I think in order to get this thing rolling we are going to have to leave some neutral notices about English Wikipedia. The Village pump was and is a good start, but I think we're going to have to go further than that. I left word with a few users, but don't want to be accused of spamming, so we have to be mindful and post where it will do the most good. Here's the notice I've been using.
Opinions are needed at RfC about Media Viewer being the default image viewer.

- Appreciate the concern, but there are appropriate forms of canvasing, so long as it's limited and done in a neutral and open manner. Kelvinsong[edit]
I do want to promote Kelvinsong's work, but I kind of wanted to put up this one, which I think is a better illustration by him - the supercell is good, but not the best of his work. Should we do the commmentary on him now with the not-quite-as-good image, or wait on the (presumably inevitable) renom and promotion of the Saturn image?
Also trying to avoid a few images that have appeared a lot - That Sega CD one has appeared at least once, probably twice or thrice in recent months, and hurricanes heavily dominated (and likely will once more dominate) the Wikicup report. The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed[edit]
Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

Problems
- On June 19, all wikis were broken for about 15 minutes due to a high server load.

WikiCup 2014 June newsletter[edit]
After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's 
Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, 
Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
The round saw this year's first featured portal, with 
Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 
12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from 
Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from 
Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).
The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Medical Translation Newsletter[edit]
Wikiproject Medicine; Translation Taskforce
This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.
note: you will not receive future editions of this newsletter unless you *sign up*; you received this version because you identify as a member of WikiProject MedicineSpotlight - Simplified article translation
Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.
Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:
- WHO's list of Essential Medicines[154]
- Neglected tropical diseases[155]
- Key diseases for medical subspecialties like: oncology, emergency medicine (list), anatomy, internal medicine, surgery, etc.
We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.
What's happening?
- IEG grant
I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.
- Wikimania 2014
For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.
- Integration progress
There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.
- Swedish
Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May. - Dutch
Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie. - Polish
Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
(This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration - Arabic
The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 17. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 22, and to all Wikipedias on July 24 (calendar).
- CirrusSearch was removed as the primary search method from Wikimedia Commons and the Spanish (es) Wikipedia due to a high server load. The plan to enable it on the Dutch (nl), Japanese (ja), Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias was also postponed to a later date. [157] [158] [159]
- The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places. [160]
- Translation memory for newly translatable pages should now offer more suggestions. [161] [162]
- A tool to convert MediaWiki pages to LaTeX is now available on Tool Labs. [163]
VisualEditor news
- Tablet users visiting the mobile version of Wikimedia wikis will be able to use a special version of VisualEditor starting on July 31. You can test the new tool by choosing the beta version of the mobile view in the Settings menu. Feedback is welcome. [164]
- All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons. [165]
- You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target. [166]

GOCE July drive and August blitz[edit]

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter[edit]
The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:
Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.
We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists.

The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.
There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. - You can now change the style of links to disambiguation pages. This is done with the
mw-disambigCSS class. [262] [263] - There was a problem on right-to-left wikis with Wikidata log entries. The text was messy in watchlists and recent changes. The problem is now fixed. The same problem will be fixed soon for user names. [264] [265] [266]
- New users are randomly chosen for a test on 12 Wikipedias. They get messages with ideas of articles to edit. The ideas come from what they have already edited. [267]

Problems
- There was a problem on the English Wikipedia on September 19. It was due to edits on a template used on many pages.
- Sites were down for users in the Pacific area around 7:00 UTC on September 20. It was due to a problem in the San Francisco data center.
- There were two bad bugs messing up articles in some browsers in VisualEditor. We fixed the bugs and updated the sites. [277] [278]
Software changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf22) is on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since September 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis on September 23, and on all Wikipedias on September 25 (calendar).
- If you have more than 2000 notifications, the oldest ones will be removed.[279] [280]
- In the "Vector" skin, the icon used for users will show a neutral gender. [281] [282]
- The VisualEditor template tool now tells you if a required field is missing. [283]
- The "Cancel" button of the VisualEditor save window is now called "Resume editing". This shows that you can still edit and you won't lose your changes. [284]
- There are new keyboard shortcuts in VisualEditor. Use Ctrl+Shift+6 for

- Errors from Scribunto (Lua) are now shown on the page. Before, you had to click on "Script error" to see them. [292] [293]
- You can add an "autovalue" for a field in TemplateData. When users add the template to a page, the value will be added automatically. An example is when a clean-up template shows the date it was added. [294]
- If you change a user preference but don't save it, it now asks if you want to save it. [295] [296]
- The PDF export tool has changed. The new one has better language support but it doesn't offer ZIM and EPUB formats. [297]

WikiCup 2014 September newsletter[edit]
In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion 
Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.
Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. Featured content![edit]
You cannot publish the Sognpost with the Featured content unfinished! Its part of Portal:Featured content, which literally gets about fifty times more traffic than the rest of the signpost! Recent changes
- You can test a new system to see math using MathML. Go to your display options and choose "⧼mw math mathml⧽".

File information cleanup
- You can join a wiki project to help tools read file information. It will help people reuse files.
- See how to fix metadata. You can fix it by adding markers to templates and adding templates to files.
- You can see a list of files missing machine-readable information on your wiki.
- The files missing readable data are also in these categories: no license, no description, no author or no source. [326]
Problems
- Developers fixed a security problem. If you use Internet Explorer 6, you won't be able to log in any more. You should use a newer browser. [327]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf4) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from October 21, and on all Wikipedias from October 23 (calendar).
- 10% of logged-out readers are getting pages from servers that run the HHVM tool. HHVM should make pages load faster. You can also test it as a Beta Feature. [328]
- If you add the same parameter twice in a template, it now puts the page in a tracking category. [329] [330]

Problems
- There was an issue with files from Commons on October 21. You could only see those with names between 140 and 159 characters by visiting Commons itself. [331]
- There was a problem with cut and paste in VisualEditor in Firefox. It was fixed quickly. [332]

Recent software changes
- The "Special:Cite" page is now called "Special:CiteThisPage". That way, you know it's to cite the page, not to add a reference. [341]
- You can no longer use the
insource:keyword for text searches. It caused issues with the new search tool. It will come back later. [342] [343]
Problems
- There was a bug in VisualEditor with Internet Explorer. It hid tools like the link editor when you opened them. The bug was fixed on Monday. [344]
- Issues with the new search tool caused geo data code to show up on pages on Monday and Friday. The mobile "nearby" tool was also broken. The problem is now fixed. [345] [346] [347]
- HHVM caused server issues on Thursday. They are now fixed.
Software changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf5) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 29. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 4, and on all Wikipedias from November 5 (calendar).
- Some wikis have icons at the top of a page to show if it is protected or featured. Icons show up using CSS. You can now use the
<indicator>tag in these templates instead to add the icons. [348] [349] - VisualEditor now tells you if you're editing a re-used reference. This helps you avoid changing it if you just want to add a new one. [350]
- The icons in VisualEditor's template editor tool for adding more fields are back, along with other fixes. [351] [352] [353] [354] [355]
- After November 6, all wikis will have the tool to edit TemplateData. [356] [357] [358]
Future changes
- The new search tool will come to the last wikis in the coming weeks. This includes Wikipedia in French, Chinese, German and English. [359]

WikiCup 2014: The results[edit]
The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.
A full list of our prize-winners follows:
- Godot13 (submissions) wins the prize for first place and the FP prize for 181 featured pictures in the final round.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) wins the prize for second place and the DYK prize for 65 did you knows in the final round.
- Casliber (submissions) wins the prize for third place and the FA prize for four featured articles in the final round.
- Czar (submissions) wins the prize for fourth place
- Sturmvogel 66 (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.

ChrisGualtieri (submissions) wins the GA prize for 27 good articles in round 2 and the review prize for 28 good article reviews in round 1.

Figureskatingfan (submissions) wins the topic prize for a nine-article featured topic in round 3.
ThaddeusB (submissions) wins the news prize for 28 in the news articles in round 3.

Recent software changes
- You may see a new tool on the mobile site of the English Wikipedia. It asks simple questions to make the article better. In the future, your answers will go to Wikidata. [360] [361]
- The MediaWiki API now shows information in a nice format. You can translate it in translatewiki.net. [362]
- Reminder: You can help fix file information on your wiki. It will help robots understand the information. After that, it will be easier for you to search files and re-use them.
- You can join two IRC chats this week to learn more about the file cleanup project. One will be on Wednesday at 18:00 (UTC) and the other on Thursday at 04:00 (UTC). You can ask questions during the chat if you need help to fix files on your wiki.
- You can see a list of files to fix on the Labs tool. You can report bugs and ask questions on the talk page.

- Wikimedia Labs was broken for a few hours on Thursday. It was due to a hardware problem. [363]

- You can now use more editing tools for tables in VisualEditor. You can add rows and columns, merge cells, and edit table captions. [364] [365]
- The style and insert menus in the toolbar of VisualEditor now show fewer tools. This helps you see the most common tasks. You can see all items by clicking "More". [366]
- The way windows inside VisualEditor work has changed. VisualEditor should be faster and have fewer bugs. [367]

FC[edit]
Thanks for all the help, and sorry about the problems. Last week's delay will help us a lot in future, but when it combines with me overdoing it and burning out and getting a cold... then it's problematic. No matter, I think we have one more moderately big week, and then we'll have cleared the Wikicup spike.
I may have told you, but I'll be away from the 27th to the 15th. I'll do what I can. As long as you delete any redirects when moving the FC forwards, Portal:Featured content can deal with a one-week gap, but not a two-week one, and I WILL have more time in the second week. I don't think it'll be too bad, though. Decembers tend to be a bit dead on Wikipedia, so as long as we get as much done before I leave as possible, we should be alright. By the way[edit]
I should have fixed that annoying bug where the "next" button would lead to draft articles on Signpost pages. It basically grabs the date of the current issue and compares it with the date of the "Next" issue it would be linking to. Little more complicated than that, as I have to convert to Unix time to get a simple comparison, but...

- There was a problem when editing tables in VisualEditor. VisualEditor was trying to fix bad values for the
colspanorrowspanoption. VisualEditor now leaves the bad values to avoid making things worse. This was fixed on November 17. [371]

- You can now use VisualEditor's tools directly when you resume editing after closing the save window. [374]
