Pics[edit]

Your two pics of the newly introduced deluxe buses on the MTC have visually enhanced the page. Keep up the good work!! The Silent Contributor 16:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that with their orange colours, the new low-floor buses might make a good pic. Btw, TSC is what people on Wikipedia seem to be calling me. Wonder why!!! The Silent Contributor 16:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, great pics!! The Silent Contributor 16:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

POV[edit]

Actually it does. I had a chat with Jimbo about this in August (wrt Chinese historical maps). And he feels so that the situation should be accurately depicted despite it being historical. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The maps shows Pakistani and Chinese jurisprudence (ie continuity) in Kashmir which is disputed by India. Similarly with claims to AP and Kashmir. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:05, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re[edit]

Since I have time today, I can write the map chooser code. But please clarify what you mean by "geo template" (you mean the coords/dms template(s))? Thanks. Saravask 19:20, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, good job on the infobox.
  • I was putting off trying to decide whether we should create separate x1, x2, y1, and y2 chooser templates or just bulk-choose all the locator code for each map (so that, in the future, we can have different formulae for maps using different projections, etc.). I guess we could create a separate formula chooser in the future if needed (keeping the coords templates you created), so the way it is now is OK.
  • Have you seen the "pushpin" map as used in {{Infobox City}}? That might be a good alternative to raw superposition.

Thanks for the help. Saravask 13:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many city articles have a large city map displayed with a much smaller thumbnail (pushpin) map of the country or state, with the location marked. See the map for San Jose, California, where they did this manually. What we are now doing at WP:IIJ is just displaying the pushpin map (all of India) without the option of making it smaller (in order to display next to a much larger city map). This is not a big issue here, as most Indian city articles don't have city maps, but might be in the future. Saravask 13:34, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like we can just rip the code from {{Infobox City}}; I can try this later today. Thanks. Saravask 14:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PSD & AI[edit]

Hi! I created Image:Goamap.png in Photoshop and have the PSD files with me. Since you work in Illustrator, is it possible to open the PSD layers there and rasterize it for svg conversion? =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Is 22 MB ok for you download? If so I'll put it up tomorrow. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coords[edit]

Thanks. I was trying to at least get places like Mumbai and Gangtok (which are are halfway down the map and at nearly opposite ends of India) to align: before, Mumbai was appearing inland while Gangtok was virtually outside of Sikkim. I was going to try to write a more accurate conversion formula for the mercator and conical maps (like these), but then I learned that MediaWiki doesn't support trig. Saravask 20:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I put in pog-switching code; if you have other ideas, please share. Thanks. Saravask 20:28, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

State locator maps[edit]

Saravask has done a great job getting the inset India map on the infobox. The locator on the inset map is slightly off-target, see Mylapore. Can you please make new state locator maps similar to the Nichalp's version of the India map. That should ensure the dots show up at the right places. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 17:10, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My preference will be to have the locator dot on the inset map. It does help in places like Mylapore. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of slum housing at Bandra Station, Mumbai[edit]

Dear Planemad

I plan to use your photo of slum housing at Bandra Station, Mumbai in a forthcoming book. I would like to include your name in the photo credits. Also, do you have an even higher resolution file of the image that you could e-mail me as an attachment or post on the web?

Thanks

Not sure if it's been resolved yet, but you said (at Saravask's talk page):

You can fix this by doing the following: <span class="plainlinks">[http://www.google.com google]</span> which prints like so: google. Infobox coords consolidation[edit]

Done. Thanks for suggesting it. Saravask 03:03, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Planemad. Great work with the beautiful maps. I changed the code per your requests. Your cartography is beginning to put even these jpeg maps to shame. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks. Saravask 19:38, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll let you know if I see any. Thanks again for the great work. Saravask 19:52, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AAI[edit]

I noticed that in Airports Authority of India you had a new logo in which Baton Roughe, Louisiana was displayed. Please correct this egregious error. I do not understand how or why such an image was used, nonetheless, remove it, and place the real new logo, which is a red-orange version of the same old blue logo.

Thank you

Location template[edit]

You mean you want it merged into WP:IIJ, or you want it used for all Indian geo features? Things like the Taj tend to have one or two templates already plastered on them (see Valley of Flowers National Park or look at Template:Infobox protected area, Template:Infobox World Heritage Site, Template:Location map India, Template:Infobox Mountain Pass, etc.) Maybe you have a way around this.

I'll see later today about the {{LocateMe}}, since a lot of the newer town articles don't have coords. Thanks. Saravask 20:35, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Change Kerala detailed map[edit]

Can you move the location of Kerala a little more to the left in the Kerala locator map (For eg. as used in Thiruvananthapuram article) so that the picture is less cluttered when used with the 'position in India' picture. TIA! --Natrajdr 11:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we have more than enough space as it is on the left side for naming cities (See: Thiruvananthapuram; This has the longest name in southern towns). Also for the northern towns, we can have the names on the right as already present (see: Kozhikode & Kasaragod) if there is a space constraint. Reducing the size of the India inset would make it too small. --Natrajdr 17:20, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That was a quick response. Take your own time to make the change. I'd like to learn a little bit of map making myself. Any starters? pzzz... I dont know anything about image editing; of course I do remove red eyes from my pictures :) --Natrajdr 17:43, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox auto-cats[edit]

Earlier, you suggested adding {{LocateMe}} to articles without coords; I think it's better to auto-add them to Category:Wikipedia articles needing geographical coordinates (or something with a similar name). Then, Indians could spot all such articles on one page and add coords (perhaps with some bot work) to them all. Also, {{LocateMe}} is too intrusive, since it is just metadata. I think population of all cats like Category:Metropolitan cities in India should be done by the infobox, not by manual inclusion.

Removing locator dots for districts is a good idea, I'll do it later today. Also, please let me know if WP:IIJ looks messed up in Opera. (When are you doing a state locator map for Andhra Pradesh? This is outrageous.) If you have other suggestions, please share. Thanks. Saravask 13:44, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain further? And would that solve the problem once and for all (provided I don't further mess with the infobox and locator map widths)? Sorry. Saravask 17:24, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Locator[edit]

I'm willing to help out. Maybe we can look at {{Australia Labelled Map}} and similar templates for ideas. I was thinking that when it's done, we can also use it to draw multi-labelled locator maps for WP:IIJ--for example, Image:Jammu_and_Kashmir_locator_map.svg could have small labels for Siachen Glacier and similarly important features. "Coords missing" cat; AP map[edit]

Hi Planemad. I remember that you asked me to add a notice to the top of all articles that were missing geo coords. I hope that Category:Indian location articles missing geographical coordinates (which the infobox now auto-populates) can serve the task. Also, you requested that I find an AP model map; will Image:Map AP dist NH roads.png do? There are other such maps for several other states, all drawn by User:Miljoshi. If you don't have time to draw more, though, don't worry about it. Thanks. Saravask 00:02, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow ... it looks great. You even got the coords to match the AP map better than I did. Thanks for your help! Saravask 19:29, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Karnataka locater map[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the great map you created. Just one request, for the southern most district, Chamarajanagar district, the color is somewhat indistinguishable from white. Can you change that to a slightly darker color?

Also, I need a couple of maps drawn for History related articles. Can you do that for me?. I will email you one of them, but the other can be created from the Karnataka locater map itself (Karnataka locator map.svg). I have moved an article into Peer review (Political history of medieval Karnataka) and for this article I need something like the Karnataka Locater map with the various capitals shown all in one map. The various capitals are Banavasi, Talakad, Badami, Basavakalyan, Manyakheta, Vijayanagara, Bijapur, Bidar, Mysore, Belur, Halebidu, Srirangapatna. I believe all these place name articles already have their "dots" in to give you the location. I will double check if it is accurate. ThanksDineshkannambadi 20:35, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Locator maps for Andhra Pradesh Districts[edit]

Hi Planemad, I am an admin from te wikipedia. Thanks for making a locator map for Andhra Pradesh. On behalf Telugu wikipedians I would like to ask if you can make locator maps for Andhrapradesh districts. Thats will be of great help to telugu wiki and we are willing to extend any help needed in doing so. --Dunnob 16:50, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

absolutely out of the question. To do something like that, i will prolly have to pledge my life for the cause of mapmaking :P
Really sorry to dissappoint Dunnob, but i really dont have the time to do something like that. Whats even more scary is when every state representative start asking me to make district loacator maps for their states. I really dont see why so much detail is necessary, especially when one can get accurate interactive maps from google and yahoo for India. This is really not worth the time time and effort -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:15, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I understand and appreciate your prompt reply. Can you atleast direct me how to go about making those maps since google and yahoo maps are copyrighted. You can email me if that suits you. Thanks --Dunnob 19:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You'll need a vector art program for a start, like inkscape or illustrator. Just open up my andhra map in it as a base and work from there. You'll need to tell me exactly what sort of help you need -- PlaneMad|YakYak 08:36, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Planemad, if the infobox is a piece of jewelry (that you and Nichalp played a big role in designing), then your maps are the precious stones set into the band. They really are cleaner, more detailed, and more helpful than the "map_type" png maps used by the Britishers' {{Infobox UK place}} or the Aussies' {{Infobox Australian Place}}. Other png maps, like Image:EU_location_UK.png, could ake a hint from your easily adaptable svg maps as well.

(Maybe in the future we will have a template and/or web-crawling, screen-scraping bot that will write featured Indian location articles for us. Then all the Indian WPians can just hang around WP:PINQ while our articles write themselves. :-) Just a subliminal suggestion).

Since I noticed that you snapped the great lead image of the Climate of India FA, you are definitely entitled to the following:

IIJ[edit]

Hi. Sorry for the late response. I made the adjustments you requested; however, there seems to be an issue regarding how/when those changes show up--when I edited IIJ, the changes did not show up in some test articles I edited (even though I tried several hard reloads and test edits). I don't know if this has something to do with the fact that it is protected. Maybe they configured the software to delay updating the 7,000+ transclusions until the servers can handle the load? Thanks for pointing the issues out. If I happen to be taking time off in the future, you could also ask Ganeshk to take a look, since he probably has as much or more template experience as I do. Regards. Saravask 07:04, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
