OpenStreetMap[edit]

Hi PM, Have you met Harry Wood? He is the OpenStreetMap guy around here (if you got any questions with OSM). And there is the WikiProject OpenStreetMap. In a recent conversation, he mentioned that we can use Yahoo Maps to draw the roads, but you cannot name the streets unless you are physically at the place. Not sure if you knew this already. I am going to be drawing street maps of Chennai with the Yahoo overlay. Nice job with the Karl Schmidt Memorial. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance you can e-mail me those Chennai Corporation maps? I could use them as a guide in naming the streets. I am currently just drawing the roads. The important thing to explain at the BarCamp would be that Wikimapia and Google MapMaker are copyrighted websites while OSM is freely licensed. I would prefer putting my hard work into OSM. Not sure if everyone understands the difference. More at OSM blog. Google MapMaker is better at the UI though. Hopefully OSM could pull some it's features. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 16:15, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Paritrana logo.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Paritrana logo.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Map of Karkota Kingdom[edit]

The article on Rajatarangini would be greatly improved by a map of the Kashmir-based Karkota kingdom at its greatest extent, around 724 to 760 CE, as would the article on Lalitaditya Muktapida. Any idea where a copyright-free map could be found? Aymatth2 (talk) 02:13, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Satvahana map[edit]

Hi,

I have uploaded a map called Satvahana.svg at "WikiProject Indian History Maps". I have used Inkscape to create it from another SVG found on the commons. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Satvahana.svg

Can you take a look at it and let me know if you have any suggestions?

There are a few problems which I will fix. I am still pretty new to Inkscape.

 * Background is transparent
 * Bigger fonts for cities etc.

Bangalore map[edit]

Bangalore

I would appreciate your help in making Bangalore street map as requested here. I have uploaded file:Bangalore street Map.png from openstreet.org. I would like your guidance to make it svg and make coordinates. Raise lkblr (talk) 08:39, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exaclty, that I had seen your Chennai map, thanks for the reply. I have uploaded new version taking down the coordinates, with Latitudes from 77.46 to 77.72, Longitude from 12.83 to 13.06. It covers all prominent places of Bangalore, though city limits are not shown in the map. 04:01, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
I have added the code. It does not seem to work. See Koramangala. The red dot is not showing up. Please do check it. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 05:55, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Raise lkblr, Please export the map in SVG format and upload it to Commons. It should be named, Bengaluru area locator map.svg for consistency purposes. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 06:12, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow.. that was too fast :) Thanks to Planemad and Ganeshk. As for svg, we can export from openstreet.org in different formats like osm.xml but i could not figure out svg. Let me try it in some articles first, Cheers! Raise lkblr (talk) 08:21, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Too many roads there, zooming out in osm did not help. That Im now introduced to osm, lemme first play with it a lil, so no timeframe yet for better Bangalore map as of now. I see you contributed a lot to indian jurisdiction maps, Great work! Wish you a Happy New Year! Raise lkblr (talk) 09:10, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to export in SVG format from OpenStreetMap using OSM's "export tab". However I've had some difficultly getting this to work properly myself. Managed it just for simple maps like this one: File:Holborn-viaduct-map.svg ...and even then the process was very fiddly. Maybe it's not realistic to attempt to make an SVG image of such an intricate detailed map. I need to experiment a little more with this myself. Might work better with OSM's "Osmarender" tool for larger exports. But then wikipedia's SVG renderer doesn't always do everything consistently (same as inkscape for example). All in all it's quite tricky, so I'd say stick with raster images for this kind of detailed map. -- Harry Wood (talk) 14:08, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

India railway network[edit]

Compliments on great work on File:India_railway_schematic_map.svg. Last year there were few significant additions to indian railway networks, which are notable enough to include in the network schematics.

  1. Anantnag-Srinagar-Baramulla in J&K "floating/isolated line", which is yet to be connected to Udhampur. (broadguage - redline)
  2. Agartala in Tripura is connected by extension from already existing Kumarghat. (meterguage - easily convertible to broadguage - so red dotted green)
  3. Line between Mangalore-Sakleshpur in Karnataka guage conversion over, and trains running. Change line to red broadguage.(change to red line)

These 3, especially first 2 are remarkable additions, hence deserve updation of schematics. Kindly look into the matter, thanks in advance. Notetherenot^ (talk) 06:27, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Planemad, not sure if you're aware of this, but the SVG map that you created for Delhi has been marked for AfD here. Indian maps[edit]

Hi, great work with the Indian maps!. I was wondering though if you could produce another set of svg maps for the Indian states but do them in the style of Template:Location map Pakistan like User:Nordnordwest has done. You see there is a drive to standardise the pin maps. Is there any chance you could produce a nice set of svgs in this style to use in the infoboxes? E.g see Varanasi we need standardised maps not ones with pink and brown in together which look unprofessional! Maybe create the state maps and then include a national state locator in the top corner like File:India Uttar Pradesh locator map.svg so it is easier to know where it is? About the Ahmedabad BRTS map[edit]

The map is quite impressive and informative not only about the BRTS system, but also about how the city is laid out. And the usage of colours is appropriate as well. This is not seen on many network maps around the world. The map is well worthy of coming up on the bus stops rather than the current ugly ones, just that they would need the Gujarati station names as well. Congratulations for the fabulous work

As for myself, I am a student of architecture and I make fantasy network maps for fun.

P.S. There is one mistake in the map. The ring road from Narol to Naroda Patiya runs alongside the BRTS line. They are not on separate roads as shown in the map.

If you could update your set up maps taking out the colour and following the graphic guidlines of the new one then I'm sure we could add your railway reuiqrements. Uou are completely free to recreate File:India Maharashtra location map.svg in the same graphic as the new updated version but with your modifications; the distance guage and the railway/hub links. As long as it is still clear and doesn't look cluttered I think this would be OK. If you would kindly update all of your maps in the improved plain, clear graphic I think we could probably continue using them, and it would make things a lot easier.. Perhaps the reason is because you are no longer active on wikipedia.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:54, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Kashmir not part of India or abandoned?[edit]

Black border denotes the official boundary of India according to the Indian government, but only the yellow areas come under Indian jurisdiction

Hi Arun

It was lovely to see map of India but I felt bad when I saw upper portion of our country. Why have you not added Kashmir part into Indian map? It is shocking that an Indian is showing India like this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 15.219.201.75 (talk) 04:46, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. I have not added or removed any part of the country according to my will, since i am no one to decide that. But it is a simple graphic representation of the territories under Indian jurisdiction. That part of Kashmir not in indian control is called Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and is worth a read to have some historical knowledge of the Kashmir conflict. Hope that clarifies your doubt -- PlaneMad|YakYak 06:49, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Request[edit]

Hi Arun, I was greatly impressed with your maps especially the one of the Ahmedabad BRTS. If do find some free time could you please render the map for Bangalore metro rail ? Thank you and Regards! --Johnxxx9 (talk) 12:03, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Planemad, I saw your nice map of the Indian railway system based on OSM data (and, by chance, I am familiar with the excellent mapping of Chennai you did where my wife comes from). I wonder if you might be able and willing to help in a similar undertaking: for an article in WP I need a map of the present day railway system of Mexico. Recently I entered all railway lines I know (I lived in Mexico quite some time and travelled a lot) into OSM and I believe it is nearly complete. I would be interested in a map with a similar background layer as the one you used, but differentiating the lines with are in use (railway = rail) and those disused (railway = abandoned). Do you think you could help? Regards HJPD (talk) 07:47, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)[edit]

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Locator Map of Tripura.[edit]

I have found in Wikimedia Commons that you have uploaded similar locator maps of different Indian states with colourful district divisions. It has indeed has helped Wikipedia a lot. But I found that although there are such maps of many North-East Indian states the locator map of Tripura is missing. I request to upload a similar locator map of Tripura with diferent districts in different colours. I hope you will keep my request. -Trinanjon Basu (talk) 14:23, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Location maps[edit]

I have been working on the Madhya Pradesh districts for some time. I find that location maps are not available for certain districts – Ashoknagar District (split from Guna District), Alirajpur District (split from Jhabua District), Burhanpur District (split from Khandwa District), Singrauli District (split from Sidhi District), and Anuppur District (split from Shahdol District). It would be great, if you could help in developing location maps for these districts and possibly also modifying the location maps of the districts from which they were split. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 04:44, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010[edit]

English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.
