Orphaned non-free media (File:CCMP - Encryption and Encapsulation.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CCMP - Encryption and Encapsulation.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Replaceable fair use File:CCMP - MAC Header.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CCMP - MAC Header.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. I believe the same to be true of the other images in your upload log. Most diagrams originating from copyrighted sources can be re-created from the raw data without too much difficulty, and either published under a free licence or released into the public domain; their non-free originals are therefore replaceable. Thanks for your messages - I think that you were typing on my talk page at the same time as I was typing on yours! I am not referring to cost; by "non-free", I mean "not free content". The ultimate objective of the Wikipedia project is to use free content, whenever possible, as a substitute for non-free content. If, conceivably, non-free media can be replaced by a freely-licensed or public-domain alternative that would adequately convey the same information, it can be deemed replaceable and therefore eligible for deletion under criterion for speedy deletion F7.

Diagrams, maps, charts and graphs are just a few examples of types of images from which free alternatives can be created. File:Euclid flowchart 1.png, used to illustrate the Algorithm article, is one example. Since it is a chart consisting exclusively of text and lines, re-creation is fairly straightforward; there is no need to use a non-free version from a third-party source. You may find it useful to read the guideline at WP:NFCCEG.

I'd suggest simply uploading the re-creations to Wikipedia itself under a different file name (perhaps something like "File:CCMP - MAC Header 2.gif"). Free Wikipedia files are continually re-assessed for suitability for transfer to Wikimedia Commons.

You can monitor Wikipedia pages for changes by adding them to your watch list. I'm watching your talk page — respond either here or on my talk page and I'll see it.

To sign and date comments and replies that you leave on talk pages, just add four tildes (~~~~) to the end of your text.

I'm sorry that Wikipedia's policies on images can seem very confusing. But don't worry about being blocked — blocks are applied when a user behaves disruptively and ignores all warnings issued against them, not when a new user is just trying to find their feet here. Okay, so you are recommending me uploading them just to Wiki for now, not to commoms (even though they may automatically end up there one day), regardless of the fact that they may be close to non-free work. I created JPG files, so I was going to give them the same name but use .JPG instead of .GIF. My main concern was the fact that they are self-made copies of original work. Looking at en:File:CCMP - MAC Protocol Data Unit (MPDU).gif, I really see nothing original or creative about it, so I would say it's ineligible for copyright protection ({{PD-ineligible}}). It's just a standard tabular representation of a well-known data structure. Not too "inspiring" really. :) If all the illustrations you have in mind are similarly simple, you could either upload the original versions to Commons or upload your own versions (preferably in SVG format rather than GIF). —LX (talk, contribs) 07:37, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment.
