- Hi, thanks for giving me the heads up. I will try my best to stop adding bands that are not appropriate for the genre. Should all metal bands be removed from this rock list? Should the artists only be included if they are associated with a sub-genre of rock like alt. rock, soft rock, country rock, etc.? I am very interested in trying to make this list as effective as possible and am looking for all the help I can get to be a useful in my contributions.
- Top notch work on the page with your most recent edits. The page has 2 banners at the top that concern the most pressing issues, no sources/references and that the criteria for the list has not been defined. The latter of which brings us to your question regarding inclusion criteria. My opinion is that any sub genre of the rock label warrants inclusion, but I am divided on the metal question. It technically is a subgenre of rock but by no means would you associate Slayer (for example) with "rock". Perhaps we should take this discussion to the article talk page and get some more feedback from other interested editors before further deciding on inclusion criteria? With regards to the necessity of sources, we could stipulate that the genre needs to be reliably sourced either on the artists article or on the list. - Okay, I brought it up on the article talk page. In the meantime I am going to put back DragonForce and Danzig as metal still falls under rock but I will promptly remove them if the consensus is metal should be on it's own. I always thought of it as word play, metal is rock, it's just harder and heavier. Those soul and pop oriented artists on the other hand, I completely agree I should never have been included them. I need to remember Rock and Roll Hall of Famers don't necessarily perform rock, as bizarre as that is. Pojo54 (talk) 16:54, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

List of mainstream rock performers[edit]
Hi, I appreciate the work you've done in making this list, but it's a bit problematic. Where are you getting the source for this genre from? If it's from the sidebar that says "Genres" and "Styles", you should know that these can be added by anybody, and they are considered unreliable as sources because they fail WP:USERG. - Mainly from the articles and biographies I read on the performers. I am going to go through each entry on the list and find specific articles from reliable sources that discuss the legitimacy of the performers involvement in rock music. The AllMusic references are more or less place holders in the meantime and the biographies often mention them as rock (and by extension, metal, punk, etc.) performers. 90% of the artists included on this list can't really be disputed as being anything but rock but I do understand the controversy with some of the more folk or general pop oriented artists. I will swiftly remove any artist I can't find concrete information on to justify inclusion on a list of mainstream rock performers. I am currently in a process of simply fleshing out the list with the performers themselves while simultaneously doing personal research as I go along. Pojo54 (talk) 18:14, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, "rock" would have to be specifically quoted in the text of the AllMusic biography for it to be used as a source – for example, I can't find "rock" mentioned anywhere in the text for Billy Preston or Carly Simon (well, it's mentioned once in Carly Simon's biography specifically as "non-rock").
- I worry that this list could conceivably contain almost every charting artist from the 1950s onwards, as you're bound to find some source somewhere that mentions "rock" for each one – would every artist in Martin C. Strong's The Great Rock Discography be classified as rock, owing to the book's title? If the list becomes huge, another editor could well end up nominating it for deletion as WP:INDISCRIMINATE or having just one source as it stands. I'm not going to get involved in that discussion, just giving you a heads up of the potential issues you may encounter down the line. Richard3120 (talk) 18:42, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- I understand that concern. The list is in it's infancy and I hope to get the criteria more rigidly defined as I go along. If someone wants it removed then I guess I'll have to live with that. Removing Carly Simon does indeed make complete sense. I was going out on a limb with that one. Perhaps I'll go through the list and focus on some of the artists that are really stretching the legitimacy of being considered a rock performer. Notably the folk oriented people like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, etc.
