IAH

i think the article has settled down. 72.153.231.179 was ripping through it last night and not adhering to the rules of editing and reverting. it was a small nightmare. thanks for your interest and help. i may need more of it later :) Urban909

Articles for WikiProject Houston

Hey there. Thanks for the complement. I have some more notables I want to write about. By the way, since you are interested in Houston people in history, I could use your help. I want to expand and improve an article I submitted a while back: John Henry Kirby. I know that the street is name after him as well as a major plaza or building (is that right?) Could you see if you can locate a non-copyrighted photo for the article? He is definitely a part of Houston for sure. And I know I will check out the WikiProject Houston for sure. ;-) JungleCat Shiny!/Oohhh! 00:53, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I will see what I can find...and John Henry Kirby is another great article. Thanks Postoak 01:22, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
This Texas website here has some good photos, but none of Kirby that I found (I haven't explored the whole site). I'll keep looking though. JungleCat Shiny!/Oohhh! 04:15, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
What a party! I read somewhere that Glenn was there to protest the demo of the Shamrock Hilton in '86. He passed on within two years after that. JungleCat Shiny!/Oohhh! 04:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I was there! I lived in an apartment at Kirby and Main. I walked up the street to join the protest. Right after the hotel was closed, the mngmt sold everything in the guest rooms, furniture, lamps, etc. I still have a table that I bought, it's at my parents house. I can't believe it was 20 years ago. Postoak 04:41, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome Template?

I have created a welcome template for the WPHouston project and was wondering: should I propose it on the proposal page? Here's the template:

You are invited to participate in WikiProject Houston, a project dedicated to developing and improving articles about the Greater Houston area.

Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 23:18, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Looks great! please add it to the proposals page. Also, if you have time, could you please create a WikiProject Houston member/user box for our user pages? Thanks Postoak 23:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Will do. Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 23:34, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and should I put it towards the bottom on the top of the page? Also, is this going to be a vote that will be supported or opposed? Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 23:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I added a section at the top of the page. It should be support/oppose. Postoak 23:42, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!

I actually found a bunch of 1903 photos of a "Compton Flood" (the LA river was notorious for floods before the US Corp. of Engineers paved it), but there was no mention in the article. Sort of like all the photos for a 1920 Inglewood Earthquake that I found but need to write an article for... --Bobak 02:34, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Images on Flickr

I have a few images on Flickr/Creative Commons that I'd like to upload, but I'm not fully sure if they are legal. The licenses vary. What is the difference between Creative Commons 2.0 and 2.5 licensing?

Here are a few examples, can they be uploaded and used in an article?

  • Attribution-NoDerivs 2.0 - [1]
  • Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 - [2]
  • Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 - [3]

Perhaps we should add a quick reference list of all legal licenses and how they are worded/described on some of the CC resources? Thank you for your help Postoak 00:24, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

The general view is that all creative commons licenses are ok except for non-commercial ones, and no-deriv ones. So, only the middle on is ok. Any combination of ShareAlike, and Attribution is ok. We have wikipedia tags for them also {{cc-by-2.5}}, {{cc-by-sa-2.0}} etc. All the different versions are ok, so you don't really have to worry about that at all. If you go to the flickr advanced search [4] and click only cc license, and then both the checks under that for commercial, and derivative works being ok you will only get results that are ok to use on wikipedia. I love flickr, haha - cohesion 01:07, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Texas

If time permits, you should join me to improve the Texas article to GA status. I have been wanting to do this for a while. —RJN 05:59, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Houston article

Peer review is in progess for Houston, Texas at Wikipedia:Peer review/Houston, Texas/archive1. Please participate with the article improvement suggestions that will soon follow. Thanks, Postoak 00:09, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the update, maybe eventually I can get to some more of the project pages and check for images :D - cohesion 05:52, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
I could try, but I am terrible at photoshop. I can take pictures ok, but manipulation is certainly not my strong suite :P - cohesion 08:04, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
There was a lower resolution image available, would this be a better choice instead a high res image? Postoak 08:09, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Houston neighborhood titles

While we're on the subject, should the titles for neighborhood articles be revised to remove "Texas" at the end? This would be in keeping with the practice for other cities, such as Category:Chicago neighborhoods, Category:New York City neighborhoods and Category:Detroit neighborhoods. I realize that there's some variance for other cities, but since Houston were uniform (and numerous) I decided to leave them alone (there's currently no official guideline at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements), though there's some mention of the issue on the talk page). FYI, my current activity on the neighborhoods is due to my doing some work on the Texas District (LCMS) article, making locations more specific. MisfitToys 23:50, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I would say that the titles should remain as they are with "Texas" at the end. It appears to be a naming convention that has been in use for a while now. Postoak 00:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Another article you might be interested in

Another article you might be interested in: Joseph S. Cullinan. He started The Texas Co. that later became Texaco. He moved the corporate office to Houston starting in 1905. I have a family event I have to attend, so I will be busy a big part of this weekend. Also, recent events here have me feeling down. I don’t feel like editing much right now. See you around. JungleCat Shiny!/Oohhh! 16:51, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Another great article, thanks! I've included it in WP:HOU and updated the new article list. I hope you have a great weekend and don't ever let this place get you down. Take care Postoak 00:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Image:Houstonmfah.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Houstonmfah.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 16:59, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Image replaced. The original was uploaded in good faith last June prior to the apparent image witch hunt. Go ahead and delete it. Knock yourself out. I requested image deletion. Postoak 20:23, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Almeda Mall

Almeda Mall has been proposed for deletion. An editor felt the subject might not be notable enough for an article. Please review Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability for the relevant concerns. An example of notability guidelines can be found at Wikipedia:Notability (websites). If you can improve the article to address these concerns, please do so.

If no one objects to the deletion within five days by removing the "prod" notice, the article may be deleted without further discussion. If you remove the prod notice, the deletion process will stop, but if an editor is still not satisfied that the article meets Wikipedia guidelines, it may be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion for consensus. Will have to come back to it if it's saved. There's nothing there to build on it now. Clipper471 07:42, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

IAH again!

IAH Cargo.jpg is not an ad. It shows one particular cargo company...what is the problem? these pages won't grow if people keep removing images or text because one person thinks it's advertisement Daniel2986 06:57, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

The problem is that the image could have been taken at any airport. It does not identify IAH in any way. It's a picture of a FedEx aircraft which would be more appropriate for the FedEx article. Do you have something that is unique to IAH? Postoak 07:04, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
that makes sense what was wrong with Image:IAH 8.jpg? Was that
your doing? Thanks Daniel2986 19:22, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
No, another editor must have removed it. Postoak 19:59, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

i need some help with you and some of the other houston project editors witht this page. its going out of control. if it doesn't get under control i will probably resign. thanks again for your help! Urban909

Please don't resign. We need you! Here's my suggestion: Add a standard ref/notes page similar to other airport articles. Move the current ref's to inline. When another editor adds something questionable, add the citation needed tag. They will be required to provide a source, if not it gets reverted after a few days. This should eliminate casual interpretation being added to the article and assure only factual data. I will get this started for you if you don't mind. IAH is a great article because of you, so don't even think of resigning :) Postoak 21:02, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
One problem, many of the current references have bad links. I'm working on a few of these now. Postoak 23:01, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Also, doing these I cited them as press releases, some will need to be revised a web sources. I need to go now. Postoak 00:02, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

you are a serious life saver! i work crazy hours and have trouble getting to the computer sometimes. thanks again and i will do your suggestions!Urban909

I suggest the list of cargo for this article be moved away from the article to its own list. What do you think? —RJN 07:22, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure, MIA and ORD both have the entire list on the main page. Urban909, what do you think? Postoak 07:30, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

i think it should stay on the page itself. i really like the idea of dividing between scheduled and codeshare. codeshare, although actual equipment (planes) aren't being used, united cargo, continental cargo are real subdivisions of the airline by using cargo palets on their planes. so i think thats important. and i have NO idea why Thatthat is dead serious about Saudi not flying cargo here. as far as i know, they have increased their service. *shrugs* Urban909

just discovered why it list some cargo airlines servicing houston. codeshare because there is skyteam cargoUrban909

Houston article

Thanks for checking the page balance for me. I thought the sources were fixed on those images I removed. oh well Postoak 05:26, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

The article's looking good. It's a good candidate for featured status.--Evb-wiki 05:41, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Featured article candidate

... I also don't like the GR citations, but don't know if they are acceptable or not.

Do you know of any U.S. city article that doesn't use general references (2000 U.S. Census Bureau in this case) for their demographics section? Featured articles Boston, Massachusetts and Marshall, Texas even use these. Ufwuct 05:41, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

GR citations are acceptable. One thing I noticed on the Boston, Massachusetts article are both notes and reference sections. Boston and Marshall, Texas also cite book sources. I see you've been working hard to respond to the objections. Postoak 01:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
I've added 30 footnotes in the last day and removed multiple unsourced statements. That leaves 84 footnote sources and 91 total footnotes (some are repeats). Out of the featured U.S. city articles, only San Francisco has more (95/102). With a few more footnotes, this should be recognized by others as a strong point instead of a weak point. Ufwuct 01:27, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Incredible..I didn't the realize all of the footnote additions until now. I'm not sure if we need to replace the images I yanked the other night, I think it looks better without so many. What do you think? Postoak 01:51, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
I have to plead ignorance on how to do images. I'm not really that familiar with sourcing. I did mention earlier (somewhere) that the article could stand to lose a few images. I like the ones that are there now. The only one that I don't care for is the Houston Ship Channel picture. Honestly, though, I don't know how I could get a replacement without doing something illegal and/or dangerous on 610, and nobody else has mentioned it, so it might work for now. It looks good to me. Ufwuct 03:53, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
lol, I guess I'm guilty. I looked everywhere for a Ship Channel PD image to replace the previous one that was about to get deleted. Postoak 05:43, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Good luck with the FA attempt

Hey guy! I Hope all is going well. Good luck with the FA attempt. If you need some help looking for a source or photo, let me know. I will help where I can. My holidays were good (I needed the break ;-) Later - JungleCat Shiny!/Oohhh! 03:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back! I'm happy to hear your holidays were good. So far the FA nomination is a little rocky, but who knows. Thanks for your offer to help with the images. Take care, Postoak 06:11, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Small climate box

What do you think about a small climate box in the climate section of Houston, Texas? JCarriker suggested it. What do you think? The main table is still in Climate of Houston. Ufwuct 16:30, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

It should be there. It enhances the article. There was no reason for it to have been removed in the first place. Also, the article has already reached GA status. IMHO, there is no need to go back since major improvements have been made since the GA nomination. I would think the only reason you would need to renominate for GA is if the article declined in quality and someone requested that it be delisted. Postoak 16:49, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Cities Participation

Hi, your name is on a list of active members for WikiProject Cities. We have recently revitalized the project by including an article assessment department. Presently there is a great deal of work to complete in rating/tagging all of the 1000+ article which have not been assessed or tagged with the new {{WPCities}} banner template. Further, we have made changes to {{Infobox City}} that require some formatting changes in the articles that use the template. Your assistance at this time of change would be greatly appreciated. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Thiefdinner dvd.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Thiefdinner dvd.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
