Photo[edit]

Hi. I posted a welcome message above and I do mean that. I hope you find many articles here to contribute to. Unfortunately, however, I do have questions about the image you posted to Tallgrass prairie. Wikipedia requires that images be Free. The documentation for the photo, and the article history suggests that the photo came from [1]. Before, a copyright investigation is begun, Wikipedia sister project Commons, will likely require better documentation that the photo is released under a free license. What information do you have on that license? Thanks. (Other then the license issue, I have no other objection to using that photo on that article). Hi. thanks for the message. You are correct that the photo originated from [2]. I did obtain permission from the author of the photograph, Kristin Mozel, through email communication. She gave permission to use without attribution, however, I would like to give her credit where I can. Perhaps we should place her name under the photograph. Thanks for the reply. As this is a volunteer project, we all just stumble along trying to do the best we can in good faith. However, certain formalities do arise around copyright, especially. As your case involves a private correspondence, and it's unfortunately not yet clear if the proper free license has been granted, in which the owner basically releases all future rights (so that anyone can use the photo for basically any purpose whatsoever, commercial, non commercial etc. (although I think they can retain attribution rights)). I think it would be best to refer this to the copyright assistance notice board on commons. If you still want to use the file, I can try to help with making the report. The formalities are a bit of a hoop to jump through though I understand they are important. I'd like to contribute to the concept of tallgrass prairie. The photo uploaded as a better species composition than the one previously shown. I've been given permission form the author. Please see the correspondence:

Yes. I hope you continue to contribute your knowledge despite this bump in the road. Check out image copyright information page for some beginner advice. The copy vio thing also has some complications because most of the Pedia's images are hosted on Commons, which is a separate project. But at any rate it looks like the copyright holder has to communicate directly. And they have to release (almost) all future uses (not just for Wikipedia). I will raise the concern on Commons but I am pretty sure without direct communication and the proper release it will be deleted. Alanscottwalker (talk) 21:34, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
