RfA thanks!

Hi ProhibitOnions! Thank you for supporting my RfA. It passed at 105/1/0, putting me in WP:100 - I'm delighted and surprised! I'm always happy to help out, so if you need anything, please drop me a line. Cheers! ➨ REDVERS 20:37, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Sure thing, and thanks for the help already! And belated congratulations on your high score on the nomination! ProhibitOnions 14:29, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

ProhibitOnions has become very well known to Wikipedians living in cyberspace and the user has a reputation of delivering only the best quality articles using only the finest words.

Berlin wiki meeting

Hello, I have been mulling over this for some time (actually at least a year), and would like to propose a a meeting of the Berlin-residing Users of the english wiki. Wolud you be interested at all, or do you think this a bad idea ? Thoughts are welcome. Cheers. Lectonar 20:04, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Good idea, but no guarantees I'd come because I'm often not here. A Wikipedia Stammtisch, eh? ProhibitOnions 20:15, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Heaven forbid, not a Stammtisch at all; and regarding your timetable: it was just an idea, let's give it another years thought ;). Lectonar 20:22, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, it's not a bad idea! ProhibitOnions 20:28, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
I'll be summing up opinions for now, and contact you if and when we got at least 3 or 4 people willing to come... You may contact my via wiki- email or at Lectonar@web.de. Thanks for your kind words. Lectonar 20:31, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, if I have any ideas I'll let you know. Regards, ProhibitOnions 20:59, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
After having collected some users willing to come, I created this subpage. Would you be so kind and add your ideas? Lectonar 12:52, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, I'll have a look. ProhibitOnions 14:43, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Frankfurt an der Oder

Done! Now you need to do the horrible horrible bit and solve the double redirects on this page. Hope this helps! ➨ REDVERS 18:52, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot! I'll go through and fix all the links, I'm more than happy to do the housekeeping. Thanks again! ProhibitOnions 22:01, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Starbucks

I replied to your comment on the Starbuck discussion page while maybe not what you had in mind. I do stand by my comment though - I'm possitive there are some people in Germany who uphold their old miles, inchs, and pounds. :) Chooserr 08:12, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

P.S. By the way exactly how good is your German because if you'd be willing to help me with a few things I'd be very happy :)

What do you need doing? Cheers, ProhibitOnions 18:43, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Have a look at your talk page, if the orange box hasn't appeared. ProhibitOnions 09:10, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Well because you're being so nice helping me out with some minor German points I found out about the fluid measurements of the starbucks cups. I'm not in Germany so I don't know exactly what they put on their menu but here your can find a measure table listing the name of the cup and its size in mililiters. It appears to me that they only keep the name the same... Chooserr 07:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board

In case you haven't been informed of it yet, I'd like to make you aware of the useful Wikipedia:German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board. Happy editing! Olessi 17:26, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that! I'll take a look now... ProhibitOnions 17:52, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Doch

No questions really. I was just trying to understand doch's use in sentence form, but even with your example it is a little tricky. :) I'm pretty sure I understand though. Chooserr 02:45, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh yeah and I would also like to thank you for your help these things are a little confusing for me. Chooserr 02
49, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Well you just cleared up more confusion :). I always enterpreted noch as "yet" or "still" but started worrying when I saw the translations for "auch noch," and "weder...noch". Chooserr 07:18, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Islamophilia

You might be interested in contributing to the new article of islamophilia. --Germen (Talk | Contribs ) 11:22, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll have a look to see if I can find some uses of the term to flesh out the article, although I think it could be seen as related to dhimmitude. ProhibitOnions 11:42, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Admin Request

I was just wondering whether you'd got any closer to accepting that administration I nominated you for...? Robdurbar 21:32, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Howdy, didn't want to do it while you were away. Now that you're back, I'll give it a shot. Since I archived the talk page a couple of days ago, I'll copy it back here, below, and I'll start filling it in right now.
So, once again, many thanks for your nomination! ProhibitOnions 18:31, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Adminship

I was procrastinating earlier and noticed your name on the list of non-admins with high edit counts, and noticed that you were listed as being interested in adminship. I seem to remember coming accross you before somewhere - don't recall where - and I guess your name stuck in my head :). Have looked through your contributions and I think you'd be a real benefit to Wikipedia as an admin.

Anyway, if you fancy it:

Just thought I'd note as I forgot to sign - posted this at about 14:10 UTC on 5th March Robdurbar 16:22, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Your RfA

By the way, I've added some new questions to your RfA. When you get a moment, I'd appreciate if you would answer them. Thanks. JoshuaZ 23:01, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Sure thing, the answers are up there now. Regards, ProhibitOnions 00:29, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

My RfA: Deletionist, moi?

Hi David,

I just thought you might want to take another look at my RfA; in my answers to JoshuaK's questions I've attempted to respond to John Reid's complaint that I am somehow an AfD deletionist. (I note that his own AfD record is 100 percent delete, although he has voted only three times.) I found his charges a little surprising because I have been one of the main voices in favour of keeping some articles recently (such as California-Nevada Interstate Maglev, List of countries by length of coastline, Hal Robinson, and Jason M. Dahl), and am not someone to urge deleting an article that might have something good about it. Of course I've voted to get rid of quite a few non-notable advertising and vanity pages, but that's Wikipedia policy.

Anyway, please do take another look; I'd be glad if you changed your mind. Regards, ProhibitOnions 22:47, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Done. Looks like it's a pileon support anyway, but always happy to correct any vote based on misunderstanding. Cynical 23:01, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/California-Nevada Interstate Maglev

Hi - I hope it wasn't too much of a problem that I added your comments to the article. They seemed like useful contributions - even if not phrased perfectly, they added information that was absent from the article. I thought of asking you to do it, but then I figured that being Bold would work fine. Of course, you're free to edit them or remove them if you prefer. Cheers, FreplySpang (talk) 23:18, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

No, no, quite the opposite, I took it as a compliment that you did that! I hope you didn't take my follow-up comment to mean anything else; I simply meant that I was advocating a position on the AfD page, and might have phrased things a little differently if I'd written a similar paragraph in the article. OTOH, your quick thinking added a paragraph (mine) to the article, significantly lengthening it, and spurring others to add more info, thus negating the charges that it was too short and lacked information. (Also, I don't know who added the fact tag to it, but I wanted to point out it wasn't really necessary; if there's only one short line in existence, we don't have to source the fact that a line whose length is well known would be the first long line. QED.) I'm surprised this article is proving so controversial; perhaps some Wikipedians are also SoCal road warriors... Regards, ProhibitOnions 23:28, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh good. Just wanted to make sure. :-) I think it's just controversial because the original version was so empty, and then the attempt to use LiveJournal as a source didn't help. FreplySpang (talk) 23:34, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I love onions, but congratulations on a successful RFA! Way to go... --Andy123(talk) 09:56, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

I like your style

I am also vehemently opposed to the onionisation of foodstuffs. They do not "add flavour" they just make everything taste like onion. I oppose your stance on vegetarianism however. That is all. - FrancisTyers 13:13, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you said it. Amother excuse is that onions "melt away" during cooking; I find they become even more prominent. While I have never liked meat all that much (which is the main reason I have been a vegetarian for many years) I have always hated onions. (I'm not sure I really want to prohibit them, though...) Cheers, ProhibitOnions 14:33, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Adminship

I've certainly thought about it, but with exams coming up in May and a trip to Germany :) - Berlin and Munich - for the World Cup, I'm hoping to scale down my contributions on Wikipedia (fat chance of that but I can give it a go!) once my Easter holidays end in a fortnight; so not for now I think. You keep on practising those newly found powers and congratulations once again! Robdurbar 22:52, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, if you change your mind about the mop, I'd be happy to nominate you myself. And if that looks too much like logrolling, I'd put in a good word for someone else to do the same instead. Regards, ProhibitOnions 14:29, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Little Green Footballs

Please see my comments on the talk page for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Green_FootballsYou can't have an article that clearly states the racism of the site, with ample references, and then have a lead paragraph give an uncharistically positive description with no references.YOU feel the site discusses but does not advocate racism (which isn't the case). You're changing the first paragraph to suit your view, and trying to defend it as "neutral".If you're going to claim that LGF is just another conservative blog, reference what you say.Point to some positive examples. As it stands you have an entire article pointing out the pure hatred the site spreads, with a lead paragraph that makes everything look rosy.

I've read the site; it's sarcastic, all right, but it makes it clear it is not racist, although some of the unmoderated comments can be, as with many sites that do not censor their message boards. Furthermore, there is nothing intrinsically "racist" about opposition to the doctrines of Islam or any other philosophy or religion. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a place for polemics. Hey, thanks for helping with the German Grundgesetz, I think you're right about your correction. Can you help with the Wikisource translation?(Patrick 13:43, 6 May 2006 (UTC))

Sure, but I thought there was already an official translation supplied by the Bundesregierung, which we could use without copyright worries. Have to look. Regards, ProhibitOnions 11:34, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, the one supplied by the Bundesregierung isn't very accurate; there are also several versions available which are conflicting, I don't think the 'official' version has ever been reviewed. (Patrick 16:10, 21 May 2006 (UTC))

Hey ProhibitOnions! I have been asked by another Wikipedian to upload this file to the Commons, but the {{PD}} tag provided is too broad. Laptop article

Hi Pro,

are you currently working on the laptop article? I have some edits for it, but if it is in use I can do them later. BTW, a while ago I wrote you a mail. Did you receive it? --Gennaro Prota(talk) 11:32, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, Yes, I got your email. I was working on Laptop a few minutes ago, but I promise not to do so for the rest of the day. (Maybe...) I was adding articles for Sharp PC-5000 and Epson HX-20, which I'd meant to write for some time. (I've written a number of the other articles on historic laptops/portables, but hadn't got around to these two.) Regards, ProhibitOnions 11:36, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh, no need to make so great promises! :) I was just trying to avoid an immediate edit conflict. As to the mail, I expected a reply, which I didn't get, that's why I asked. I think the Laptop article is coming out pretty good :) --Gennaro Prota(talk) 11:46, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
I am very bad at replying to e-mails.... ProhibitOnions 11:48, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm... ok :) I have a doubt about the Laptop article, BTW. Someone added in the definition that a laptop may be a personal computer or a Mac (the person who did this used a bad wikilinking, but that's not the issue). The "or Mac" part has been removed, but was it really erroneous? --Gennaro Prota(talk) 11:57, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Strictly speaking, a Mac is a "personal computer." The term was in use before the IBM PC was introduced. However, "PC" is often taken to mean the IBM's heirs, only because of their ubiquity. ProhibitOnions 12:02, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, that clears the issue up. Maybe we can add a note saying "not necessarily an IBM PC"? --Gennaro Prota(talk) 12:05, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
As long as it doesn't overcomplicate things. ProhibitOnions 12:48, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
I agree. In the end I decided to avoid the note, as we have a link to personal computer. If a word is defined in terms of others, one should know or learn the meaning of those other terms. --Gennaro Prota(talk) 12:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Your calculation

Hi,

since I watch your (talk) page I noticed your edit summary and... here we go. You can easily verify your calculation by using Kate's Tool. It doesn't provide up-to-date info right now, but I guess it's a temporary issue. This page links to further tools:

http://tools.wikimedia.de/~interiot/cgi-bin/count_edits

--Gennaro Prota(talk) 14:20, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Yep, I know about Kate's Tool, being an administrator and all, but as you point out, it isn't working ("en.wikipedia.org data is no longer updated"). According to Interiot's Javascript tool, I had exceeded 5000, however I wasn't sure whether that included all deleted edits or not, hence the disclaimer. Hope this clears things up. Regards, ProhibitOnions 14:25, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I didn't know that you knew. I was just trying to be useful. It wouldn't be a problem to me if you had 4,000 edits and said 5000 anyway :) --Gennaro Prota(talk) 14:43, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps, but there are some people on Wikipedia who would get on my case about that kind of thing [1], so it makes sense to be cautious... Regards, ProhibitOnions 14:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, thanks for the levity :) Maybe the aim of these persons is exactly to give us a good grin (I fail to see the usefulness of their activity, otherwise...) --Gennaro Prota(talk) 16:58, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Like it! Thanks, I'll plug this in right away! Regards, ProhibitOnions 10:58, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I don't think you're being a dick. However, I think the reasoning why the user was not blocked immediately is that the first edit was a change, rather than a revert, and so doesn't count.
Another possibility: In my experience, there are a number of topics in which groups of users sharing one fixed viewpoint will take turns reverting bona fide changes to an article, then immediately try to have that user blocked when he or she takes the bait and restores the reverted edits three times. It's bad faith, but sometimes hard to prove, and I suppose admins would rather be cautious in such situations, as it's not always clear who the naughtiest user is. (And during the time it takes to figure this out, the revert war may have gone another round or two, as it did in this case.) Here goes:  ProhibitOnions  (T) 11:54, 10 May 2006 (UTC)...wow!
I am really glad you liked it! I even created a special subpage for signatures. I think I'll deal with this professionally from now on, since apparently I am not that good in judging 3RR's.

For the record, his change wasn't bona fide, see the actual registrations: [2] [3], [4]...  NikoSilver  (T) @ (C) 12:59, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Nah, I didn't think so either, but it does take time for the admins to look this stuff up before they come to the same conclusion, and I guess that's what happened. Going a bit off at a tangent, I just came upon this
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Emoticon&diff=52487007&oldid=52405721
This is a genuine case where it's very difficult to decide: is it vandalism or not? The user removed a whole piece of the article, but all the removed lines concerned "pornographic" (just kidding ;)) things. Also, our definition says an emoticon represents a human facial expression and conveys an emotion. He may well have acted in good faith and removed the offensive parts :) --Gennaro Prota(talk) 15:15, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Naaah, I reverted him for deleting the best part... NikoSilver  (T) @ (C) 16:01, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Re:Voivodships

Thanks for your help with them. Regarding the links, do we have a bot that takes care of double redirects? I believe this would be the quickest way to deal with the problem.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:35, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Xerox NoteTaker.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Xerox NoteTaker.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Again on Laptop article

Hi Pro,

are you still watching the laptop page? There have been significant changes lately and I would like to hear your opinion about them. —Gennaro Prota•Talk 16:07, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

RedHot 14:07, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Sine there's another up there that avoids the .jpg format, which is horrible in dealing with the color red, you might as well delete it with my blessings...  ProhibitOnions  (T) 12:07, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
JPEGs can handle bright saturated red with attention to certain technical details -- see http://groups.google.ca/group/comp.infosystems.www.authoring.images/msg/26eccccce1035e23 etc. -- but that image is better as a PNG anyway (for other reasons). Churchh 23:43, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Berlin Hbf

Thanks for your comments, but there's nothing wrong with "main line" as two words - in fact it's normal British English usage. I speak from 40 years' experience, and, for instance, Alan A. Jackson's Railway Dictionary includes "main line" but not "mainline". As one word it's more commonly used in the context of drugs rather than railways. Haupt doesn't mean Central, and in British usage Central often (even usually) doesn't mean Main - for example, Liverpool, Manchester, Leicester, Rugby, Loughborough Centrals are/were not the main station in any of those places. The latter three were called that because they were on the Great Central railway - nothing to do with the stations' location or importance. In this context "Central" is, to my mind, inappropriate. Birdhurst 12:22, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for writing. I simply wanted to point out that, although many cities have main stations, very few have a Main Station, and Central Station is a more common title (and yes, the Grand Central might have popularized it), no matter that main might be more literal; this was already discussed at some length on the talk page. AFAIK, Deutsche Bahn has not come up with an official English name, so Berlin Hauptbahnhof it stays; and it is indeed a very central(ly located) station, but as Berlin is very decentralized city, this is a mixed blessing. So far, the station seems very busy, but almost entirely due to passengers having to change trains; unlike many such stations it seems to be a final destination for very few people.
I realize also that mainline can be written "main line" and some sources prefer this. However, the drugs use of the term (along with "highball" and "lowball" and probably many other examples of dissoluteness) come from railway terminology, and not the other way round. Wikipedia seems to strongly prefer "mainline", but if you spend more time on the talk pages, you might be able to convince people of the merits of "main line" instead. Atheist

Do NOT edit protected pages to your prefered version [5]. This will get you desysopped.--Doc ask? 23:39, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes that was a little bit naughty. Not the edit so much as the content-based rationale. Don't mix adminning and content editing. --Tony Sidaway 23:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Doc, it seemed Tony protected the wrong version (ie, the redirect added during a revert war) rather than the original version, consistent with all other respectable expressions of belief in Wikipedia. I simply corrected the matter. As for "content editing," where exactly is the problem? My "content-based rationale" was simply to explain that Tony seemed to have misunderstood the original request for protection, protecting it as a redirect to a different userbox.  ProhibitOnions  (T) 23:47, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
You obviously don't understand how protection work. In an edit war (and I'm not sure there was one) the protecting admin protects at the current version (at the point of protection - not the one a party requests). No doubt one side will consider that version to be the 'wrong version' - but that's tough. The article remains frozen until disputes are resolved. Admins do not misuse their powers to revert to theri prefered version, no matter how strongly they feel about the issue. You have misused your admin powers - and my worry is that you don't sem to understand that you have done so. The content is irrelevant - admins don't behave like that. --Doc ask? 23:53, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
The problem is that a redirect is just an edit like any other, and when protecting you shouldn't modify anything. If I were still an admin I may have reverted you right now :) - but don't get too beat up about it - the people above are being awfully harsh as well and may have conflicting interests. So, next time I'd just throw a quick question to an uninvolved admin who is a pal of yours :). RN 23:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
You are right, RN, and I have reverted myself. I agree, though, that Doc seems unusually interested in deleting the atheism box (see his talk page). As far as a "preferred version" goes, there had long been a consensus version, which was repeatedly being changed (and arguably vandalized), and was the edit before the one Tony froze. I'll follow your advice next time, though it should be noted that until this edit I, too, was an uninvolved admin. Regards,  ProhibitOnions  (T) 00:19, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Congratulations. You manged to tee-off two of the three main antagonists in the userbox deletion wars. All you need is for Cyde to stop by to make it three for three.Oh well.Sorry you go drug into the mess. --StuffOfInterest 00:47, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Heh-heh. Funny thing is, I tink userboxes are pretty silly myself, too, and only today I finally decided to add them to my userpage; I won't mind if they all disappear, it's the selective deletion that I find a bit worrisome. Clyde is welcome to drop by here, too.... Best wishes,  ProhibitOnions  (T) 00:54, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm more or less the same.My wish is just to see some sort of concensus reached to get this over with and let people concentrate on editing. To that end, I've thrown together yet another idea to see if it floats or sinks.Drop by if you feel like it.Sigh...wish I was in England myself right now. :) --StuffOfInterest 00:57, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Me too, but I'm in Berlin. There wasn't a userbox for "is sort-of from England and is there sometimes" (presumably that one was deleted) so I had to go with what there was. BTW, I'd just finished reading this article on your userpage (with interest, along with all the fun hate mail you got from jihadis for... what, spelling things correctly?). If only everyone could be so cool-headed.
Anyway, it's bedtime for ole Prohibit. G'night...  ProhibitOnions  (T) 01:05, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Kill Onions

Hehe, seems like there is a whole community out there, who do not like onions. It is a hard life, when onions are everywhere in almost every meal, isn't it? I do not like onions either :). Greetings, ilir_pz 00:11, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
