Venus flytrap

This isn't what Wikipedia is usually for, as mentioned at the article, but we have some slight latitude on talk pages, and it helps me as part of my thinking process. If you need some help growing your traps, here's my suggestion: Get a large, deep bowl, like a punch bowl, and a good-size flower pot that will fit inside that is one to three inches taller than the bowl. Fill the flower pot with a layer of washed gravel (not any old gravel, but washed) at the bottom, and then a layer of washed sand on top of that, until about 1/2 to 2/3 full. Then mix about equal parts of sand and sphagnum moss until close to the top. Plant your flytrap in the center, not too deep (the roots don't grow deep, but they spread out wide along the surface.) Top with a thin layer of sphagnum moss.

Put your pot in the bowl and fill it with water until the bowl is full, using only distilled or rain water (never filtered or tap!). Put it outside where it will have plenty of access to lots bugs and all the sun it can handle. (These are not really good indoor plants.) Keep the bowl full of water, it will ensure the plant has enough and you can monitor the level. (Remember, it's a swamp plant, so you have to recreate its natural environment.) Then, just let it alone. In fall, drain the water and let it partially dry out. Cover with tin foil and store in a cool, dry place. A refrigerator works well. Don't allow it to freeze! Take it out in spring, and it will come up again.

It takes about three or four years for them to mature to full size, and in such a set up they have to adapt to catching flying insects (mine love yellowjackets), but the entire plant can grow to about the size of half a basket ball. They can live to be 20-30 years old. And, being a flowering plant, a flytrap is both male and female. I hope that helps. Zaereth (talk) 00:32, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
