HELLO! C3PO![edit]

This bot, as it currently operates, is a menace. It not simply alters content, but removes and marks it for deletion. The entire point of policing images for copyright vios is so Jimbo won't get sued. This means being able to DISCRIMINATE between Orphan images which pose a high risk of this from those which donot. So please explain how a map of The Tetrarchy of Diocletian or a photo of an ancient bas relief potraying members of the Praetorian Guard or of the British army's Military Cross fits this criteria? At the very LEAST your bot should INFORM the uploader of the problem. This should be a small task for an expert programmer such as yourself. There are certain jobs for which bots are unsuitable. Deciding which content should be removed or deleted is certainly among them. Please turn it off and keep it off until it is improved. Thanks--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 09:47, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before ranting, please familiarize yourself with exactly what the bot does. All it does is search for images that some editor has already tagged with {{nosource}}, {{unknown}}, or equivalent, and removes those images from articles. It does not tag images for deletion, and it does not delete content. Oh yes, and the bot hasn't been running since early New Years' Day. --Carnildo 19:44, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OrphanBot does more than simply remove tagged articles. It also patrols for images it deems "unsourced" and captions it deems "too long". You completely ignored the points and issues I raised. How do those three images I listed, pose a grave danger of a copy-vio lawsuit? In many cases, these images had been on the 'Pedia long before the Jihad against unsourced images was launched. They are clearly being used in a FAIR manner, and even if on some remote planet a lawsuit were filled, it would be laughed out of court or ignored. As would the map Image:Map Gaul.gif, which your bot removed from NINE pages!!! In some cases it has even removed long standing images from long ago FEATURED ARTICLES. Please explain this- Found unsourced image Image:Blackadder.jpg in Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 2005. It did'nt remove it, but it did see it as unsourced. Clearly this image SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED but your bot for some reason deemed it should. It therefore should not be removing ANYTHING. There is a term for mindlessly removing or altering information without regard to context, content or discussion...VANDALISM. Strong term I know, but apt in this case...and one I would not use if you had bothered to program it to inform the uploader of an image's status and place a note or tag on the article's discussion page. Much as I love technology and the idea of it making our lives easier, we must admit there are many tasks bots cannot nor SHOULD not be doing. Making what are effectively EDITORIAL DECISIONS are certainly among them. I see from the number of objections, complaints and suggestions on your talkpage, I'm not alone. Good thing for you, you ran it over the holidays when far fewer people were around, or you would have gotten a lot more complaints. By all means, use it to locate images which you think may be problematic, then REPORT what it finds to you and other interested parties. But the actual decision on what needs to be removed or deleted is best left in the hands of us frail, "meatbot" humans:> Please consider these points and suggestions before you run it again. Thanks--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 06:53, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What you see on my talkpage is a number of editors who don't understand what OrphanBot is doing. "Caption too long" is a warning to me, the operator of the bot, that the bot might have made a mistake and removed a paragraph, instead of an image. "Found unsourced image" is a warning to me, the operator of the bot, that OrphanBot found a tagged image in an unusual location, such as the "today's featured article" image you mentioned. As I said before, please try to understand what OrphanBot is doing before you complain. --09:16, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
I know what your bot does, sir. I've spent a good deal of the last two evenings trying to track down and revert some of the damage it has done. These are not frivillous or questionable images either, but helpful, informative and interesting maps, paintings and photos which are CLEARLY being used in a FAIR manner in historical articles. On the plus side, I'm glad it keeps open logs and you've programmed some safeguards into it. But it needs to STOP removing content without regard to context. Your bot has serious technical and philosophical issues which need to be delt with before you unleash it again. Perferably at a point in time which is not a major holiday.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 14:26, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Take it up with Jimbo, then. He declared that images with unknown source or unknown copyright information need to be deleted. I've just been assisting in the cleanup. --Carnildo 18:08, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice Nuremberg Defense. So by the same logic, if Jimbo suddenly decided one day that INLINE citations are to be required for every article, then it would be justified in your mind to create a bot which would delete all text passages which lack sources. You may call removing content without regard to context clean-up, sir, but to me it is effectively vandalism. Very well, since you refuse to be reasonable and your bot incapable of it, I will, reluctantly, contact Jimbo himself on the matter. It raises some larger issues which need to be addressed--R.D.H. Compete? Collaborate? EXTERMINATE!?[edit]

BTW, hope you like my attempt at being funny in the wacky captions. Just thought I'd put it there also because it's one of my first image downloads! Anyway... Spawn Man 00:54, 11 January 2006 (UTC). P.S. shouldn't we be more competitive in edits? I mean, we're neck & neck as to how many articles we've created... We should think up a competition or something, or do a collaberation? P.P.S. Have you seen my painted model I've uploaded in my photo gallery? It got half way through the golden demon competition. P.P.P.S. Just felt like putting P.P.P.S. & will probably put P.P.P.P.S. too. P.P.P.P.S. That's all....[reply]
Hey, if I did'nt find them funny I would'nt have left them up there...But funny or no, I think it's a fun thing for us to do even if the attempts are not always rib splitting. If nothing else, we get to share neat stuff...such as bizzare Japanese cooking shows, and dog bombs and New Zealand coastal disputes.
Don't really see this as a competition...but thanks for reminding me, I need to start some new artys:> Seriously, though, a collaboration sounds like a good idea...its been a while. What you want to write about? I have some ideas..if you're interested and someone hasnt baet us to the punch-out.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 06:43, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A random tip you might find helpful: rather than using {{user4}}, create a subpage at User:R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine)/Maintenance with {{subst:user4|R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine)}} on it. Then, use {{maintained|{{User:R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine)/Maintenance}}}}. This lets you use Special:Whatlinkshere/User:R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine)/Maintenance to generate a list of all the articles you've added your name to.

Feel free to ignore me, though, if this isn't useful for you ;-) —Kirill Lokshin 04:42, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would be a fool to ignore your knowledgable and helpful advice. Thanks! I only discovered the maintained template yesterday, so it is still very much in the "experimental" stages for me. How would that work for artys I co-maintain though? For instance Nufy8 and I are guardians of Team Fortress Classic and of course General O'Connor is Leithp and my project.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:10, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, you'd both create subpages and list them, but it's not necessary. Your using the subpage notation rather than {{user4}} doesn't affect anyone else putting their name into the template at all. —Kirill Lokshin 14:13, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mais bien...Merci! I'm still a lil gunshy to play with templates though, after my disasterous attempt to make one for the Cimbrian War, which you so kindly fixed for me:>>--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 06:50, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problemo, Amico...sorry I did'nt sound off earlier, it did'nt show up on my watchlist for some reason. All I saw was you telling me about problems with our now dear deleted mottos section and then Silencio starts rearranging the pics. After reading the talkpage I realized why all this had happened. Now they think we don't know how to arrange images properly. Earlier, they thought we were plagerizing and wanted to delete the entire article, remember? Now it is "great jobs guys, but you arrange images like kids". Of course they know what's better for the article than we do, right? Wish they'd make up their bloody minds, give us some REAL help or get out of our damn way :>. Barcelona huh? Lovely town, I envy you..always wanted to go there. Exactly bro! We are supposed to show GOOD FAITH, well how is this possible when they sure as hell aren't showing us any! I've noticed that in most good articles it is one or two dedicated and knowledgable contributors who do most of the work. The rest just criticize or, at best, make minor contributions. Which is too bad, because it would be truly cool if there were more REAL TEAM efforts. Criticism is easy, the WORK is difficult! Spiritus.S.S.D--R.D.H. I've always preferred Bernstein anyways;) Again, OUTSTANDING JOB! --R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 07:21, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see you started this article. I've got some stuff to add to it, but before starting I was wondering whether it shouldn't be split into two articles, as in First Battle of Bull Run and Second Battle of Bull Run? Any thoughts? Rhion 18:02, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Hi! How much stuff do you have? It would have to be quite a bit to justify splitting the article. The two battles of Bedriacum took place within only a few months of one another, and we know little about them apart from the dates, place, combatants and who won (Romans really did not seem to like to write too much about battles amongst them for the purple). By contrast, over a year separates the two Bull Runs, and we have a lot more info on both (Strengths, casualties, manuevers, unit commanders etc.) As it now stands, the two Bedriacums have barely enough between them to constitute a large stub. But please, add what you can. Sapere aude and Cheers--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:34, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response - I'll add some stuff first then we can see about splitting later. There is quite a bit on both battles in Greenhalgh The Year of the Four Emperors, taken from Tacitus and Plutarch, and I might be able to lay lands on the relevant volume of Tacitus. It will have to be a bit at a time anyway as things are rather busy at the moment. Rhion 13:17, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WOW! You brought in the heavy guns! I was going to recommend some good translations of Plutarch and Tacitus I found, but you clearly didn't need them. You have turned the mere stub I started into an outstanding article...VERY well done!! So Thank you! Not merely for expanding and improving on my work but for helping reassure my Wiki-faith, which has been wavering somewhat of late. I salute you, Sir! Sapere aude (and you have:)--R.D.H. Btw Bro, i think we should move the section on the late empire before the training part, to have a diachronical thingy on the article, but the problem is how i do that? Btw, great job on that Grand Armee! F.S.S.D --Philx 06:49, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Grazz bro:> We have a rapport I guess...plus you know enough English and I know enough Roman history so that we make an effective team:). I plan on writing a lead-in section, explaining the situation which prompted the changes in the late Empire. That will give the readers a better idea of chronology and context. It will also make it more comprehensive. You think the section (sections after I finish the Late Emp intro)should be moved up above Training? I thought they would be better further down, since the training metheods we discuss are those established by Marius and practiced throughout the remainder of the empire's history to various degrees. But we can try it you way after I finish the lead and see how it looks. Spiritus.S.S.D.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:33, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grand Images[edit]

Did you fix the images on La Grande Armée? As they now appear to be in order on my computer. This is my work computer, which uses IE as opposed to my home one with Firefox so maybe that's why they appear okay now. Leithp 08:20, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No bro, As i said below, I've been on an unplanned break. But I'm glad those insubbordinate guardsmen seem to have fallen in line. Weird thing is, I use ONLY Firefox on my box (old and new) and the images seemed ok. What do you think of the article so far? I think it has promise, but still needs some fleshing out.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:22, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, looking at it back on my home computer, it still looks untidy. I'm not sure what to do, other than what you suggested earlier. The article itself looks very good and comprehensive. I don't know an awful lot about Napoleonic battles, but I'm very impressed. What section did you think needed fleshing out? Leithp 17:53, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well (always a deep subject:) Ansbach did a great job with the infantry. So much so the sections on the other forces now look scant by comparison. However comprehensive it may be, it doesnt seem enough. Also, I was thinking of adding one last main section giving a brief history of the Armée, overlooking its rise, evolution and decline. Subdivided into 4 periods: 1804-06, 07-09, 10-12 and 13-14. Then conclude with a much briefer legacy section, discussing the Grande Armée's influence on 19th and early 20th century military establishments. Though it may be hard at times for us proud, Anglophiles to admit, it was the first true modern army. And its model of speed, organization and efficiency is still influential today. Napoleon never wrote down his military theories in any singular, coherient manner. Most of those books were written after his downfall, largely by his admiring enemies or adoring subordinates. But through examination of the military system he built, and led to so many triumphs and glories we can get brief glimpses into one of the greatests and most daring minds of history.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 21:21, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, galleries. A fine plan, they seem to have done the trick. As far as old boney goes, I can see how he was such a successful commander but I don't subscribe to the cult of personality that surrounds him. I tend to prefer Wellington, or preferably Beef Wellington. Leithp 13:16, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you approve bro. It was the best solution I could devise. La galerie des Maréchals seemed to have worked well, so I decided to try it for some of the other sections too. Of course one reason it works in those sections is because, like Boney himself, they are a bit on the short side. But I'm far better at expanding text than shrinking or rearranging images :>--R.D.H. An Esperanzial note[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wig and Sha...I've written four letters to them, and gotten 2 and a half replies back (the half being the promise of another reply later). Oh Mercy, Mercy Me (The Wikipediology)[edit]

I was just having a look across RFA, which I don't tend to look at too regularly. It definitely seems to be getting more stringent these days. Some of the current RFAs are painful to look at (Ec5618 and Adam1213's in particular). RFAs have a tendency to become RFCs all too easily, just ask poor Halibutt. The talk page item What is going on makes interesting reading (and a good subject for poor quality puns in talk page headers). Leithp 08:54, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More Stout for the Stout!
(Ultra SIGH). Months ago I tilted at the Rfa reform windmill. The results were discouraging. Most simply refused to believe the system, while not yet broken, is clearly breaking. I saw this coming and I'm getting to the age where much of the time it sucks to be right. Even Durin is starting to recognize the success rate has dropped off dramatically and WP:GRFA has failed (I called GiRAffe "A safety sign by the Mosh pit". Of course a lot of those failed candidates are bringing it on themselves by not preparing properly. They give very stock or inadequate answers to the questions. Many don't even bother to answer the "optional" ones (which really are'nt if you want to be taken seriously as a sysop). Plus they also seem to want the mop for the wrong reasons. They see it as more of an honor than a job instead of the other way round. By the way, buddy, thanks for stepping in to defend me from Ghirla's distortions! Yeah, heard that one before. I have to say that I don't mind a bottle of Sam Adams now and then, so they're not all bad. You have to wonder how you guys managed to get from Budweiser Budvar to Budweiser? What the hell were they thinking? Scotland produces some pretty bloody awful lagers as well though, alongside some top notch ales. Leithp 10:36, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's the legacy of Prohibition. Before this failed, but not very noble, "Experiment" my country tis of thee had some of the best brews on the globe. Afterwards, most all the breweries went extinct. Only a few survived because they switched to flour or cattle feed production. So when the national nightmare finally ended (For this reason alone FDR's mighty visage should be added to Mt. Rushmore), there were only a handful big brewing conglomerates in place to take over the market. To meet the vast demand and their customers' shrunken wallets (It was the Great Depression by this time afterall), they churned out cheap, watered down, piss-flavored psuedo-pilsners. Since there was nothing else readily avalable, people drank it...and since they didn't know any better bitters, actually began to LIKE it. This "Dark age" of American brewing, reinforced by aggressive ad-marketeering and collusion amongst the beer barons and lawmakers, lasted until the Microbrew revolution of the 80's and 90's. Sam Adams is one result of this Renaisance of the brau meisters' art. It is the exception to the rule which harkens back to tastier, more intoxicating time...When the best of the old world and the new met at the bottom of fermentation tanks, to be miraculously sythesized by marvellous microbes.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 05:25, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I didn't know that. I'd heard of microbreweries (in an old copy of Hate IIRC) but it didn't mean anything to me. As for the current beers, 50% rice or corn content? Have these people never heard of the Reinheitsgebot, the only acceptable German purity law? I suppose a lot of the breweries around the UK would qualify as microbreweries, if we had such a definition. There's still a good bit of regional variation in beers here as well, the dark days of the 70s and 80s didn't totally kill it off. Being a Scot, I tend to drink a heavy 80 shilling but I remember working in Cumbria for a few months where the local brewery, Jennings, produced an outstanding bitter that I still hanker for but can't find anywhere.
This reminds of a story one of my old colleagues told me about a pub in Edinburgh known as diggers (it's next to a graveyard, and was the pub of choice for the workers there). Diggers is known for the quality of it's 80/. He took his son and his mate out for a pint there, and asked the barman for three pints of lager. The barman looked him over and said "What the fuck do you think this is? Fucking cocktail night? You'll have three pints of heavy like everyone else." He decided to order the heavy instead. Sadly by the time I moved to Edinburgh as a student the pub had long since cleaned up its act. Leithp 08:53, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ROFL! Fucking cocktail night...ahhh I needed that laugh. I agree, unless we're talking Asian cusine or Pet food, rice should NOT be involved. Period! One of my old mates from the college Vax and BBS days used to microbrew. We got our supplies from Hoggtown Brewers, which was conviently located behind the Market Street Pub and across from Durty Nelly's. we generally used plastic tanks, to avoid getting the metallic taste...hey I know, Iron is supposedly good for you, but still.--R.D.H. What the?[edit]

What's up with Ghirla, Giano & Bichon-what's-his-name? Why are they so anti-R.D.H right now? It sounds wierd to me that calling someone a Russkie could condure up such hatred. I don't think they care for us too much Spawny. No surprises really (except Ghirla accepted my apologies, which was actually heartening...a small glimpse into the way things OUGHT to be). I'm just glad they did'nt act until after our plane got well off the ground, otherwise the Rfa could have become another DOA. Meantime let's stay cool and heed the warning sign I posted:> As for your JOKE, Sirah...We are not amused. The worst part was you had me all worried I'd somehow offended you. I came dangerously close to withdrawing at one point. But the thought of the Mona Lisa Smirk on Giano's face if I did, gave pause. By the way, do yourself a favor, try and steer clear of him and Bish (her). They take offense easily, hold grudges long and their Wiki-Fu is strong. Plus they have many powerful, influential friends...trust me, I've learned this the hard way. My RFA[edit]

Hi RDH, thanks for participating in my RfA discussion. Unfortunately, my fellow Wikipedians have decided at this time that I am not suitable to take on this additional responsibility, as the RfA failed with a result of 66/27/5 (71.0% support). If you voted in support of my request, thank you! If you decided to oppose me at this time, then I hope that if I do choose to reapply in the future, the effort I will make in the meantime to improve and expand my contributions to Wikipedia may persuade you to reconsider your position. Victory terms[edit]

Not silly at all bro, but very relevent. The victory threshold (consensus) is generally considered 75%. Right now it is not looking too good. Unless there is a sudden, dramatic surge in support. Which honestly, given the shift in momentum in the last several hours, I don't see happening.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 05:26, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Thanks![edit]

Okay, this is perhaps a bit overdue, but thank-you for your support in my recent RfA! I passed with a final vote count consensus of (82/1/0), which was a lot of support that I really appreciate. I saw Nick Cave was in town last night for a gig and it reminded me of one of his old albums, back from when he was a great songwriter. The title is a quote from the King James bible, not that I'm religious but it seemed appropriate. The quotation itself refers to fighting back against goading only leading to pain, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Cave meant it another sense as well. Take from that what you will..... Thank You, My Friend[edit]

It's funny apparently i'm following Jimbo's beliefs better than Jimbo seems to be at the moment. I hope he can open his eyes and see that acting above the law will do nothing but raise enmity towards himself rather than help solve disputes, but in the meantime i'm going to stick around if I can assist people with things.

However, i've said all I probably need to say on that arbcom case, and i'll just let them handle it from there unless they have any more questions. Karmafist 14:29, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You certainly seem to be. Jimbo is a great guy, but he is not infallable. Carniildo is the only one who should have been de-oped. And he is the only one who should be facing Arbcomm now. I've called upon him to resign. I hope he has the sense and decency to do what is best for the project and our community. From my previous dealings with him, however, I'd be pleasantly surprised if he did. Regardless, I'm sure you and ElC will be vindcated. I just hope it is POST HASTE. Another Esperanzial note...[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Kool Aid[edit]

Oh yeah! That's a good idea, but i'd suggest caution (a subst rather than a template) not because it's a bad idea, but because Tony or one of the Cabal's goons will unilaterally delete it 70 times, and then we'll have another TFD with everybody going insane and blah blah blah. I wouldn't mind the fight with them, but i'd prefer to do other things if I could avoid it, so the subst would probably be a better idea. Karmafist 03:42, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mes Compliments[edit]

Excellent work translating the Battle of Lugdunum article into French. Wikipedia needs more of this sort of inter-language cross-pollination. Bien Fait, Monsieur!--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 18:54, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. It's actually pretty impressive to see that History of France (facts and biographies) are often much better in the wiki en than in the wiki fr. Poppypetty 19:59, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Impressive but perhaps a bit sad also. I sometimes go looking on Wiki Fr for materials, especially dealing with the Napoleonic wars and too often find them lacking. But I did learn, at least, that the name Grande Armée was also given to the large force of Danish Vikings which invaded England in 865 and created the Kingdom of York[1]. And later in the 19th century, to the multi-national force which invaded Argentina to overthrow the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Good translations help fill in a lot of gaps.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's definitely a good point. That makes me wonder if "small" wikipedias should reduce the scope of their project. Instead of writing poor quality articles about almost every topic, we should focus on articles about our countries (France, Belgium, Canada, ....) and articles who would be in a paper encyclopedia (Alexander the Great, ...). What is really strange in the French wikipedia is that you can create an article and be sure that nobody will ever modified them (except bots :-( ). In the same time, the few articles I have initiated/I watched on the English wikipedias are modified all the time (even if they are on confidential topics) : it's much more a collaborative work. Hopefully, we will be able to attract enough contributors (actually, we are roughly four times smaller than the English wikipedia (Recent Changes, Newpages and Total number of articles). Poppypetty 03:17, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is an excellent suggestion! Focus on the big topics and those you know best. I'll grant the French Wiki this, at least you have relative peace. Here on the En Wiki, we pay a high price for our embarassment of riches, in the form of almost constant edit warring and vandalism. It keeps things exciting...but also, at times unpleasant and discouraging. Many articles, which only need some expansion or improvement, end up deleted instead. I often think there are some here, who are out to deliberately dismantle an encylopedia rather than build one. Makes me wonder why I'm still around sometimes. But then I see occasional little gems of brillance and dedication and they remind me why I first feel in love with this place and project. A bientôt mon camarade!--R.D.H. unsourced image[edit]

I know you are a pretty veteran user, so rather than posting an automated {{image source|Image:Tetrarch system.PNG}} notification, I'll just inform you that Image:Tetrarch system.PNG has no source. It's kind of hard to claim fair use, especially since a free alternative should be available, especially with a higher resolution, and there's well, no source. This makes it a likely chance to be a copyright violation. If you somehow have more information about the image and its license, please insert it in the image description tag. Otherwise, it faces deletion. Cheers! Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 18:54, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The image you are referring to WAS deleted, after it was orphaned by Orphanbot. I found a lower-res copy on one of Wiki's mirrors and restored it. I do not know its original source. But it is 1) A very useful illustration of a subject which needs illustrating and 2) Is clearly being used in a fair manner. Perhaps you might help, by finding a better res copy, or improving the res on the existing one. Or at least recommend a better tag for it. Even veteran users get lost in the ever-changing maze of copyright tags. Thanks--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 00:20, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, but I think that fair use claim for this image is weak here; I think it should be deleted for good if we can't find an appropriate license. Fair use is usually invoked for living persons (the Roman Empire is dead) or historical things where the photographs for the people's or event's copyright hasn't expired yet; it will be eventually tagged for deletion if no alternative is provided. Perhaps I'll ask user:Yeu Ninje to make a free use alternative before I tag it; he's a good mapmaker, but he usually only does maps dealing with Chinese history. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 21:13, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The resolution is weak, but I don't think the case for fair use is. Anyroad, please don't delete it, if and until, after your colleague has made a superior replacement. We need more good maps on the Wiki. But until we get them, any map is better than none.

BTW:

I agree with those sediments. It is a wrong-headed piece of corrupt legislation which only encourages Intellectual protectionism and Patent trolls. Such laws demand challenge and defiance. Cheers--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:19, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno if you're aware of it but you're on a list of the 100 most edited user talk pages (see the Signpost article). And this may help bump it up a space. Leithp 08:31, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Me neither. A LOT of familar names on that. Scary how many of them I know (or at least know of). Some surprises too...for instance the number of edits on Jimbo's page is not in the tens of thousands, which I'd guesstimate, in fact it's not even close. It's a kinda dubious "honor" in a way. On the plus side it indicates a lot of interaction with the "community". On the minus side, it shows a lot of interaction with the community in lieu of actual article grunt work. But I accept it as part of the price of "popularity" and the joys of sadistic statistics:>--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:05, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cimbrian War[edit]

Why did you revert the edits without comment? The changes to the opening paragraph are valid, as pointed out in the talk page - Vedexent 19:26, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reasoning behind the changes has been laid out on Talk:Cimbrian War, including the relevant section of the history of Plutarch which points out the mistake in the old opening paragraph of the article. - Vedexent 20:16, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You have my replies. And for the record, it is the CIMBRIAN war, not the Cambrian. You might also want to check the dates too.:)--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:19, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - now I have your replies, and the discussion continues. For future reference, if you're going to do mass reverts without pissing off people who have put the time and effort into the editing, you might at least comment the revert, or put something in the talk page - Vedexent 20:40, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And for the record, you could try assuming "Good Faith" for a change. In case you didnt notice I put a lot of work into that article also. I daresay, more than you. In fact, it did not even exist before I started it. So given that, I think asking for a mordicrum of good faith on your part is not being unreasonable. So please stop being a phallus.--R.D.H. RFA Thanks[edit]

Thank you!
Thank you for your support in my recent RFA. It passed 53/1/2 and I am now an administrator. I appreciate that some of you made exceptions to your usual requirements re length of service and so on because we've interracted positively in the past, or because of my credentials, so I will endeavour to use my new mop cautiously. I'm always open to feedback and gently constructive criticism. If you're not an admin and need some assistance do of course please let me know. Re.:Rfa[edit]

I've seen things that would scare Stephen King,Clive Barker, Wes Craven when I was a kid, along with trigger happy morons. The Robertson Panel, which was initiated by the CIA (seen other evidence other than what is here in the Wikipedia article) is intended to make those who have had bizarre experiences, are interested in these matters look like idiots and fools. While I was travelling "Out West" as a prospector, people have flat out told me (polite) that IF there is alien contact at all, they'll revolt for religious reasons, such as, "The Devil is after our souls and the govt. is working with Satan !" and/or out of revenge for being made a fool of and/or a idiot, "insane", as persuant to the Robertson Panel protocol and that of the Brookings Report. One guy told me that if he saw something bizarre, that(polite) no one will make him out to be some kind of laughingstock, he'll shoot the accuser instead. Out West, disputes like that are settled in blood, by a shot in the dark or by gutting with a knife. I am no longer out there at all. It is amazing what kind of people you run into. By the way, while getting a $60,000 trailer fixed, I had found a UFO, and shot a pix of it while it was flying over a car dealership. It is now my terminal's Wall Paper. Martial Law 22:01, 9 March 2006 (UTC) :)[reply]
Hmm Trailer...UFO...Tornado. Always wondered why those words so often occur in such close proximity.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 10:59, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No tornado, the UFO was located in the Phoenix area, which also saw the Phoenix Lights. The RV had some kind of factory defect. That UFO pix is now my Wall Paper. I've even tried to locate one Peter A. Gersten, who had appearantly founded, and had ran CAUS for some time. He is nicknamed "The UFO Lawyer"( he is a lawyer), while there. I've also investigated the Phoenix UFO Incident, and, what I've found is that the "official explanation" is not the truth at all, and the incident is still ongoing. The planes were launched, but it was not to chase, nor drop flares, and I've seen on TV the farce in which a "Alien" was arrested by AZ. DPS and placed on TV (I have Satellite TV). "DPS" is simply "Dept. of Public Safety", encompasses the local police, Sheriff's Office and State Police, other police agencies. One witness reported that one of the UFOs had flown over her house. Some of the UFOs were similar to the Flying Triangles, then there was the matter regarding a GIGANTIC UFO seen, and videotaped over Phoenix itself. Flares are too random, and the column of hot air comming off of a parachute flare would cause it to move erratically. One witness called Art Bell during the incident, while Art Bell's show was on the air, reported that Luke AFB had sent up armed fighters at the UFOs. One does not send armed $40,000,000 planes after flares at all. Martial Law 20:19, 26 March 2006 (UTC) :)[reply]
  1. Don't use abusive edit summaries.
  2. user:Markalexander100 is perfectly right; the quotations section was far too long, and belonged in Wikiquotes. Please don't insist on this. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:37, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have just as much right to insist they be included as he does to exclude them. Deleting an entire, longstanding section from an article arbitraily is WRONG. We are supposed to be BUILDING a fucking encyclopedia here not dismantalling one. Besides, the Rommel collection on Wikiquotes is pathetic compared to this one. Also, I would ask you to keep any further discussion of this on the article's TALK PAGE.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 22:53, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. "Rights" have nothing to do with it. If you want to discuss the issue, do so – calmly and politely – on the Talk page, not via aggressive comments in edit summaries.
  2. If you continue to show yourself unable to control your aggressive and abusive language in messages to other editors or in edit summaries, you risk being blocked from editing.
  3. You have already violated the three-revert rule on this article; if you do so again, you will be blocked frome diting for twenty-four hours. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:21, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Rights have everything to do with it. This is supposed to be a free, open encyclopedia. I have just as much right to edit it as you or anyone else. This is not vandalism but RESTORING quality content, removed for a questionable reason without discussion. Those who cannot come up with reasonable arguements spout policy. And the 3RR rule is one of the most abused, blunt insturnment policies on the entire project. If you want to abuse it further and block me for it then by all means do so. I was just starting to get back into the project again after a long period of disgust and disillusionment. A 24 hour block might be just what I need to quit it once and for all cold turkey.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 23:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My problem with that quotes section, which I brought up on the talk page a while back, is that it's basically unsourced. At one point people seemed to be quoting lines from the film Patton, which bears a fairly tenuous relationship to the truth in many places, let alone the fact that the words were those of a Hollywood scriptwriter. Rather than moving to wikiquote, is there value in doing a purge on the unsourced lines and asking for people to provide a reference before they are returned? Leithp 08:29, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Blocked 15 hours for 3RR and revert warring (3 hours of the 15 for incivil edit summaries). NSLE (T+C) at 09:57 UTC (2006-03-09)
I'm not sure I agree that, R.D.H. hasn't made an edit in over 8 hours. Blocks are meant to be preventative, not punitive. Leithp 10:00, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In my view, he knew what he was doing when he did it. There's been a report at WP:AN/3RR, and I blocked as I don't see how he should be allowed to violate policy. No one should (and yes, I include Jimbo in this). You may unblock or lessen the block as you see fit, go ahead. NSLE (T+C) at 10:03 UTC (2006-03-09)

I think that he hadn't made an edit in eight hours because, first, he'd gone to bed, and secondly, he'd got his own way for the moment. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:15, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can't sleep...clowns admins will eat me!--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:31, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bugger, I missed this message (I was looking at WP:AN/3RR) and I've just undone the block. In any case, I don't want to wheel war but I don't agree with the block. You can reinstate it if you like, but I think it would be best to take the discussion to the talk page and stop all the reverting. It's a pretty trivial matter really. Leithp 10:45, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you once more Leithp. My continued participation in this project is currently hanging by threads...and you are holding one of them. The Rommel article is now off my watchlist. It can be AfDed for all I care.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:31, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello my friend! Thanks for taking an interest and apologies for my tardy response. I feel I cannot, in good conscious, continue as an Esperanza member. My recent conduct goes against what ESP is SUPPOSED to stand for. I make no excuses, but I do offer some explanations. Wikipedia today is not the same place I fell in love with last year. Collegiality and collaboration have become increasingly rare phenomenia. Confrontation and conflict are all too common commodities. I can no longer pretend to be drinking a virtual expresso and say its not getting worse. The reason why is simple...Growth. Wikipedia is a victim of its own success and is starting to collapse under its own weight. The current mechanisms for dispute resolution, mediation and participation are breaking down. As a result, the power structure is becoming more authoritarian, bureaucratic and arbitrary. It is getting to the point where I cannot engaging in simple edititing without getting harassed by twits and trolls, and threatened with RfCs and blocks. I'm willing to accept and admit my share of the blame, but not all of it. The Wikipedia community is increasingly at war with itself. I will either leave or if I stay I fear I will be increasingly drawn into it, in trying to defend what we have created here. In either case, my continued membership in Esperanza, which is a pacifist organization at its core, will be rendered void. But for what it's worth, outside of my beloved Military History Project, ESP has meant the most to me. Thank you again for your interest and offer. And please feel welcome to share this with the other members. Here's HOPING, that a time will come when the acidic smoke clears and we can go back to being a community of encyclopedists once more. Cheers, --R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 19:51, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that..I will include the notes in the edit summeries. The Photo of King Gy of Nepal, is an AP release. The sign with the monkeys I presume is from a zoo somewhere. I have been using it as one of my sigs on various message forums for years. The Ulm campaign map, as I stated, is from an old, pre 1920 book, the title of which I cannot recall.
