This bot, as it currently operates, is a menace. It not simply alters content, but removes and marks it for deletion. The entire point of policing images for copyright vios is so Jimbo won't get sued. This means being able to DISCRIMINATE between Orphan images which pose a high risk of this from those which donot. So please explain how a map of The Tetrarchy of Diocletian or a photo of an ancient bas relief potraying members of the Praetorian Guard or of the British army's Military Cross fits this criteria? At the very LEAST your bot should INFORM the uploader of the problem. This should be a small task for an expert programmer such as yourself. There are certain jobs for which bots are unsuitable. Deciding which content should be removed or deleted is certainly among them. Please turn it off and keep it off until it is improved. Thanks--R.D.H. Before ranting, please familiarize yourself with exactly what the bot does. All it does is search for images that some editor has already tagged with {{nosource}}, {{unknown}}, or equivalent, and removes those images from articles. It does not tag images for deletion, and it does not delete content. Oh yes, and the bot hasn't been running since early New Years' Day. --Carnildo 19:44, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OrphanBot does more than simply remove tagged articles. It also patrols for images it deems "unsourced" and captions it deems "too long". You completely ignored the points and issues I raised. How do those three images I listed, pose a grave danger of a copy-vio lawsuit? In many cases, these images had been on the 'Pedia long before the Jihad against unsourced images was launched. They are clearly being used in a FAIR manner, and even if on some remote planet a lawsuit were filled, it would be laughed out of court or ignored. As would the map Image:Map Gaul.gif, which your bot removed from NINE pages!!! In some cases it has even removed long standing images from long ago FEATURED ARTICLES. Please explain this- Found unsourced image Image:Blackadder.jpg in Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 2005. It did'nt remove it, but it did see it as unsourced. Clearly this image SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED but your bot for some reason deemed it should. It therefore should not be removing ANYTHING. There is a term for mindlessly removing or altering information without regard to context, content or discussion...VANDALISM. Strong term I know, but apt in this case...and one I would not use if you had bothered to program it to inform the uploader of an image's status and place a note or tag on the article's discussion page. Much as I love technology and the idea of it making our lives easier, we must admit there are many tasks bots cannot nor SHOULD not be doing. Making what are effectively EDITORIAL DECISIONS are certainly among them. I see from the number of objections, complaints and suggestions on your talkpage, I'm not alone. Good thing for you, you ran it over the holidays when far fewer people were around, or you would have gotten a lot more complaints. By all means, use it to locate images which you think may be problematic, then REPORT what it finds to you and other interested parties. But the actual decision on what needs to be removed or deleted is best left in the hands of us frail, "meatbot" humans:> Please consider these points and suggestions before you run it again. What you see on my talkpage is a number of editors who don't understand what OrphanBot is doing. "Caption too long" is a warning to me, the operator of the bot, that the bot might have made a mistake and removed a paragraph, instead of an image. "Found unsourced image" is a warning to me, the operator of the bot, that OrphanBot found a tagged image in an unusual location, such as the "today's featured article" image you mentioned. As I said before, please try to understand what OrphanBot is doing before you complain. --09:16, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
I know what your bot does, sir. I've spent a good deal of the last two evenings trying to track down and revert some of the damage it has done. These are not frivillous or questionable images either, but helpful, informative and interesting maps, paintings and photos which are CLEARLY being used in a FAIR manner in historical articles. On the plus side, I'm glad it keeps open logs and you've programmed some safeguards into it. But it needs to STOP removing content without regard to context. Your bot has serious technical and philosophical issues which need to be delt with before you unleash it again. Perferably at a point in time which is not a major holiday.--R.D.H. Nice Nuremberg Defense. So by the same logic, if Jimbo suddenly decided one day that INLINE citations are to be required for every article, then it would be justified in your mind to create a bot which would delete all text passages which lack sources. You may call removing content without regard to context clean-up, sir, but to me it is effectively vandalism. Hey, if I did'nt find them funny I would'nt have left them up there...But funny or no, I think it's a fun thing for us to do even if the attempts are not always rib splitting. Re:Hi! How much stuff do you have? It would have to be quite a bit to justify splitting the article. The two battles of Bedriacum took place within only a few months of one another, and we know little about them apart from the dates, place, combatants and who won (Romans really did not seem to like to write too much about battles amongst them for the purple). By contrast, over a year separates the two Bull Runs, and we have a lot more info on both (Strengths, casualties, manuevers, unit commanders etc.) As it now stands, the two Bedriacums have barely enough between them to constitute a large stub. There is quite a bit on both battles in Greenhalgh The Year of the Four Emperors, taken from Tacitus and Plutarch, and I might be able to lay lands on the relevant volume of Tacitus. Well (always a deep subject:) Ansbach did a great job with the infantry. So much so the sections on the other forces now look scant by comparison. However comprehensive it may be, it doesnt seem enough. Also, I was thinking of adding one last main section giving a brief history of the Armée, overlooking its rise, evolution and decline. Subdivided into 4 periods: 1804-06, 07-09, 10-12 and 13-14. Then conclude with a much briefer legacy section, discussing the Grande Armée's influence on 19th and early 20th century military establishments. Though it may be hard at times for us proud, Anglophiles to admit, it was the first true modern army. And its model of speed, organization and efficiency is still influential today. Napoleon never wrote down his military theories in any singular, coherient manner. Most of those books were written after his downfall, largely by his admiring enemies or adoring subordinates. But through examination of the military system he built, and led to so many triumphs and glories we can get brief glimpses into one of the greatests and most daring minds of history.--R.D.H. Glad you approve bro. It was the best solution I could devise. La galerie des Maréchals seemed to have worked well, so I decided to try it for some of the other sections too. Of course one reason it works in those sections is because, like Boney himself, they are a bit on the short side. But I'm far better at expanding text than shrinking or rearranging images :>--R.D.H. As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.
In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. I was just having a look across RFA, which I don't tend to look at too regularly. It definitely seems to be getting more stringent these days. Some of the current RFAs are painful to look at (Ec5618 and Adam1213's in particular). RFAs have a tendency to become RFCs all too easily, just ask poor Halibutt. (Ultra SIGH). Months ago I tilted at the Rfa reform windmill. The results were discouraging. Most simply refused to believe the system, while not yet broken, is clearly breaking. I saw this coming and I'm getting to the age where much of the time it sucks to be right. Even Durin is starting to recognize the success rate has dropped off dramatically and WP:GRFA has failed (I called GiRAffe "A safety sign by the Mosh pit". Of course a lot of those failed candidates are bringing it on themselves by not preparing properly. They give very stock or inadequate answers to the questions. Many don't even bother to answer the "optional" ones (which really are'nt if you want to be taken seriously as a sysop). Plus they also seem to want the mop for the wrong reasons. They see it as more of an honor than a job instead of the other way round. By the way, buddy, thanks for stepping in to defend me from Ghirla's distortions! It's the legacy of Prohibition. Before this failed, but not very noble, "Experiment" my country tis of thee had some of the best brews on the globe. Afterwards, most all the breweries went extinct. Only a few survived because they switched to flour or cattle feed production. So when the national nightmare finally ended (For this reason alone FDR's mighty visage should be added to Mt. Rushmore), there were only a handful big brewing conglomerates in place to take over the market. To meet the vast demand and their customers' shrunken wallets (It was the Great Depression by this time afterall), they churned out cheap, watered down, piss-flavored psuedo-pilsners. Since there was nothing else readily avalable, people drank it...and since they didn't know any better bitters, actually began to LIKE it. This "Dark age" of American brewing, reinforced by aggressive ad-marketeering and collusion amongst the beer barons and lawmakers, lasted until the Microbrew revolution of the 80's and 90's. Sam Adams is one result of this Renaisance of the brau meisters' art. It is the exception to the rule which harkens back to tastier, more intoxicating time...When the best of the old world and the new met at the bottom of fermentation tanks, to be miraculously sythesized by marvellous microbes.--R.D.H. Well, I didn't know that. I'd heard of microbreweries (in an old copy of Hate IIRC) but it didn't mean anything to me. As for the current beers, 50% rice or corn content? Have these people never heard of the Reinheitsgebot, the only acceptable German purity law? I suppose a lot of the breweries around the UK would qualify as microbreweries, if we had such a definition. There's still a good bit of regional variation in beers here as well, the dark days of the 70s and 80s didn't totally kill it off. Being a Scot, I tend to drink a heavy 80 shilling but I remember working in Cumbria for a few months where the local brewery, Jennings, produced an outstanding bitter that I still hanker for but can't find anywhere.
This reminds of a story one of my old colleagues told me about a pub in Edinburgh known as diggers (it's next to a graveyard, and was the pub of choice for the workers there). Diggers is known for the quality of it's 80/. He took his son and his mate out for a pint there, and asked the barman for three pints of lager. The barman looked him over and said "What the fuck do you think this is? Fucking cocktail night? You'll have three pints of heavy like everyone else." He decided to order the heavy instead. Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Impressive but perhaps a bit sad also. I sometimes go looking on Wiki Fr for materials, especially dealing with the Napoleonic wars and too often find them lacking. But I did learn, at least, that the name Grande Armée was also given to the large force of Danish Vikings which invaded England in 865 and created the Kingdom of York[1]. And later in the 19th century, to the multi-national force which invaded Argentina to overthrow the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Good translations help fill in a lot of gaps.--R.D.H. That's definitely a good point. That makes me wonder if "small" wikipedias should reduce the scope of their project. Instead of writing poor quality articles about almost every topic, we should focus on articles about our countries (France, Belgium, Canada, ....) and articles who would be in a paper encyclopedia (Alexander the Great, ...). What is really strange in the French wikipedia is that you can create an article and be sure that nobody will ever modified them (except bots :-( ). In the same time, the few articles I have initiated/I watched on the English wikipedias are modified all the time (even if they are on confidential topics) : it's much more a collaborative work. Hopefully, we will be able to attract enough contributors (actually, we are roughly four times smaller than the English wikipedia (Recent Changes, Newpages and Total number of articles). That is an excellent suggestion! Focus on the big topics and those you know best. I'll grant the French Wiki this, at least you have relative peace. Here on the En Wiki, we pay a high price for our embarassment of riches, in the form of almost constant edit warring and vandalism. It keeps things exciting...but also, at times unpleasant and discouraging. Many articles, which only need some expansion or improvement, end up deleted instead. I often think there are some here, who are out to deliberately dismantle an encylopedia rather than build one. Makes me wonder why I'm still around sometimes. It's kind of hard to claim fair use, especially since a free alternative should be available, especially with a higher resolution, and there's well, no source. The image you are referring to WAS deleted, after it was orphaned by Orphanbot. I found a lower-res copy on one of Wiki's mirrors and restored it. I do not know its original source. But it is 1) A very useful illustration of a subject which needs illustrating and 2) Is clearly being used in a fair manner. Perhaps you might help, by finding a better res copy, or improving the res on the existing one. Or at least recommend a better tag for it. Fair use is usually invoked for living persons (the Roman Empire is dead) or historical things where the photographs for the people's or event's copyright hasn't expired yet; it will be eventually tagged for deletion if no alternative is provided. The resolution is weak, but I don't think the case for fair use is. Anyroad, please don't delete it, if and until, after your colleague has made a superior replacement. We need more good maps on the Wiki. But until we get them, any map is better than none.

Me neither. A LOT of familar names on that. Scary how many of them I know (or at least know of). Some surprises too...for instance the number of edits on Jimbo's page is not in the tens of thousands, which I'd guesstimate, in fact it's not even close. It's a kinda dubious "honor" in a way. On the plus side it indicates a lot of interaction with the "community". On the minus side, it shows a lot of interaction with the community in lieu of actual article grunt work. (seen other evidence other than what is here in the Wikipedia article) is intended to make those who have had bizarre experiences, are interested in these matters look like idiots and fools. While I was travelling "Out West" as a prospector, people have flat out told me (polite) that IF there is alien contact at all, they'll revolt for religious reasons, such as, "The Devil is after our souls and the govt. is working with Satan !" and/or out of revenge for being made a fool of and/or a idiot, "insane", as persuant to the Robertson Panel protocol and that of the Brookings Report. One guy told me that if he saw something bizarre, that(polite) no one will make him out to be some kind of laughingstock, he'll shoot the accuser instead. Out West, disputes like that are settled in blood, by a shot in the dark or by gutting with a knife. I am no longer out there at all. It is amazing what kind of people you run into. No tornado, the UFO was located in the Phoenix area, which also saw the Phoenix Lights. The RV had some kind of factory defect. That UFO pix is now my Wall Paper. I've even tried to locate one Peter A. Gersten, who had appearantly founded, and had ran CAUS for some time. He is nicknamed "The UFO Lawyer"( he is a lawyer), while there. I've also investigated the Phoenix UFO Incident, and, what I've found is that the "official explanation" is not the truth at all, and the incident is still ongoing. The planes were launched, but it was not to chase, nor drop flares, and I've seen on TV the farce in which a "Alien" was arrested by AZ. DPS and placed on TV (I have Satellite TV). "DPS" is simply "Dept. of Public Safety", encompasses the local police, Sheriff's Office and State Police, other police agencies. One witness reported that one of the UFOs had flown over her house. Some of the UFOs were similar to the Flying Triangles, then there was the matter regarding a GIGANTIC UFO seen, and videotaped over Phoenix itself. Flares are too random, and the column of hot air comming off of a parachute flare would cause it to move erratically. One witness called Art Bell during the incident, while Art Bell's show was on the air, reported that Luke AFB had sent up armed fighters at the UFOs. Rights have everything to do with it. This is supposed to be a free, open encyclopedia. I have just as much right to edit it as you or anyone else. This is not vandalism but RESTORING quality content, removed for a questionable reason without discussion. Those who cannot come up with reasonable arguements spout policy. And the 3RR rule is one of the most abused, blunt insturnment policies on the entire project. If you want to abuse it further and block me for it then by all means do so. My problem with that quotes section, which I brought up on the talk page a while back, is that it's basically unsourced. At one point people seemed to be quoting lines from the film Patton, which bears a fairly tenuous relationship to the truth in many places, let alone the fact that the words were those of a Hollywood scriptwriter. Hello my friend! Thanks for taking an interest and apologies for my tardy response. I feel I cannot, in good conscious, continue as an Esperanza member. My recent conduct goes against what ESP is SUPPOSED to stand for. I make no excuses, but I do offer some explanations. Wikipedia today is not the same place I fell in love with last year. Collegiality and collaboration have become increasingly rare phenomenia. Confrontation and conflict are all too common commodities. I can no longer pretend to be drinking a virtual expresso and say its not getting worse. The reason why is simple...Growth. Wikipedia is a victim of its own success and is starting to collapse under its own weight. The current mechanisms for dispute resolution, mediation and participation are breaking down. As a result, the power structure is becoming more authoritarian, bureaucratic and arbitrary. It is getting to the point where I cannot engaging in simple edititing without getting harassed by twits and trolls, and threatened with RfCs and blocks. I'm willing to accept and admit my share of the blame, but not all of it. The Wikipedia community is increasingly at war with itself. I will either leave or if I stay I fear I will be increasingly drawn into it, in trying to defend what we have created here. In either case, my continued membership in Esperanza, which is a pacifist organization at its core, will be rendered void. But for what it's worth, outside of my beloved Military History Project, ESP has meant the most to me. Thank you again for your interest and offer. And please feel welcome to share this with the other members. Here's HOPING, that a time will come when the acidic smoke clears and we can go back to being a community of encyclopedists once more.
