Jayjg[edit]

Hey Rama, I was told that you could give me a better perspective in regards to Jayjg as a "POV-Pusher". Zen-master was asking me about this from conspiracy theory, and even though I think he's blown it out of proportion somewhat, I could hear frustration in his voice on IRC, and I try to assist those who are frustrated when I can. Arbitration for User:TDC[edit]

Hi, you don’t know me but we have had contact with a mutual person, User:TDC.

I got your username from the Requests for comment/TDC-2[1] or the Requests for comment/TDC[2]

Currently there is arbitration pending on User:TDC. [3]

I welcome and encourage your comments on the arbitration page.Travb 01:56, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"turn this into what User:Rama called a lynching"

I said nothing of the sort. I was pointing to Ericd that he would be well-inspired to be extremely cautious to avoid to give any pretext to some people to discredit this RfAr by claiming "lynching". I am sad to see that I was so very right to do so.
I am willing to assume that TDC's command of the French language is not good enough to allow him to grasp such nuances, but I would appreciate if a less cavalier behaviour, which does not force words into my mouth, could be adopted. Rama 18:04, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it sure seems that it is turning into a lynching, but the question remains: who is bringing the rope? TDC 18:10, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would appreciate that this talk page could not be used as a battlefield by third parties. If you want to write about each other, start blogs ! Rama 18:31, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry Rama, but could you please translate what you said on Ericd's page....which caused this whole misunderstanding....Travb 21:50, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

translates into

Unless I misunderstood everything (in which case I'd be interested to have complements of information), I would appreciate if you could avoid needlessly provoking User:TDC; As you seem to know already, this user has proves problematic before, I daresay that we do not need to encourage him to make further display of his abilities. Furthermore, a RfAr procedure in undergoing examining his behaviour, and I would not like that any possible pretext could be given for someone to accuse us of lynching people we dislike.

I would like to mention that this text, though it is open for everybody to see, is intended for Ericd personnally.

Furthermore, I do not approve of someone beginning a "Evidence presented by User:Rama" section either. I was only commenting on TDC's sort-of-quasi quotation of me, and only so that I would not be attributed words and meanings that I did not speak or think. Rama 22:43, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. you wrote on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Winter_Soldier/Evidence: "Note that I did not start this section, and I do not approve of its creation without me being even notified. I was only commenting on TDC's sort-of-quasi quotation of me, and only so that I would not be attributed words and meanings that I did not speak or think. I am worried at the though that disposing of other's words could become a custom. Rama 22:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)"

I am guilty of seperating out your words into a new section...as per the evidence page:

This page is not for general discussion - for that, see talk page.
Please make a section for your evidence and add evidence only in your own section. (emphasis my own).
Then again the next sentence says: Please limit your evidence to a maximum 1000 words, which I think I may have violated. If you do not want your own section, delete it. I did not mean to offend you. Travb 05:40, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The points you made in French are more better left for the evidence page, and not today... Thanks for translating! Travb 05:40, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DYK suggestion[edit]

Hi, just saw your suggestion for GRECE on Template talk:Did you know. Typically, for DYK, the suggested article name is made bold and the proposer signs after the suggestion and indicates it as a (self-nom) if it is from an article that he has started. I thought of informing you as you may want to do so. Also, stubs are not generally accepted for DYKs, so you may want to expand it a bit. --Gurubrahma 19:05, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use pictures[edit]

Hi, I've been crunching through all the random fair use pictures on en:, and ran across Image:Jaureguiberry 1.jpg and friends. While the fair use argument is defensible, the rules compel me to tag them as "unsourced" since you didn't say where they came from, and that means they are on a 7-day countdown to deletion. If you have a list of all your uploads, you might want to go through and mark them up. (If it's any consolation, I lost a dozen-odd fair use stamp images that hadn't gotten used in articles yet...) Stan 06:41, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

These are screenshots of the film Le Crabe-tambour [6]. I must say that in my present understanding of fair use, these images, used as such, would not qualify as fair use, and should indeed be deleted. Thank you for your notice and your work ! Cheers ! Rama 11:21, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It would be reasonable to have one of the images captioned as "Jaureguiberry serving as the setting for Le Crabe-tambour", just as we have fair-use images of people-type actors. I personally find it interesting how real-life ships have been adapted for their movie roles - such a departure from their original purposes. Stan 17:40, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, perhaps keep the best one for this. I might make an entry about Le Carbe-tambour sometime. Rama 21:10, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the same vein, we have Image:Magic2 missile.jpg. There seem to be lots of pics according to Google, but none obviously free. One possibility might be the manufacturer (I didn't look), categorizable in Category:Promotional images. Stan 19:44, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't remember uploading this one. Clearly, it is bound for deletion. Rama 21:10, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They are somewhat stereotypic there, so I claimed (though, not directly) that I was a Muslim; I already told about it when I said that I "believe in Allah and Christ" and that part, so practically, I wasn't lying. Then I got banned by Asim Led. :S HolyRomanEmperor 10:07, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Louvre Pyramid[edit]

Hi Rama! from Adrian. Thanks for your message at the Image Description Page for Image:Paris.louvre.pyramid.750pix.jpg concerning the deletion of my picture, and at User talk:Arpingstone. You will see that I have added a very strong second message to that Image Description Page. I am forced to leave it at that. I am extremely angry, but helpless. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 14:48, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Believe me, it really did not please me at all to have to tell you that.
Beside, I do not think that your image should be deleted (to be frank, I think it would be a shame), but clearly, you are not free to put the image in the Public Domain. Some French laws can be annoying in the context of Wikipedia, and clearly this is one of these. Rama 14:58, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Rama, I have got really steamed up about this one, please forgive my rant. Thanks - Adrian Pingstone 16:50, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Someone correctly pointed out that on this image the person administering CPR should not be giving oxygen or be touching the patient's head if a shock is expected. I have adjusted the caption, but perhaps a revision is advisable :-) JFW | T@lk 14:03, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A shock ? You mean like something that could break the spinal cord ? In what I learned, any case, the basic life functions (respiration and circulation) have priority on any other consideration; if you have to make your patient tetraplegic to make him breath, you do it. Rama 16:08, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if the person providing CPR is administered a 360 J DC shock he may prefer to stop CPR. JFW | T@lk 02:01, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes, of course. The defibrillation operator will direct the whole maneouver here, and ask people around to step back when the defibrillator is checking the patient's condition (one possible exception to the rule that the man at the head is the leader). Thank you for spoting this ! Rama 08:26, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You mention a revision of the drawing, you you have something in particular in mind ? Perhaps I could draw the moment where the people are stepinf back and the defibrillator operator clears the scene by waving his hand over the patient's body, what do you think ? Rama 08:29, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't spot it, but I think it may need addressing. Nothing wrong with the quality of the image! Perhaps my new image caption solves the problems. JFW | T@lk 09:29, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your issues with Dassualt Rafale etc[edit]

Regarding Dassault Rafale. You marked a major format change as a minor edit, quoting from Wikipedia:Minor edit: "Marking a real change as a minor edit is considered bad behavior". Also you don't seem to understand the community element of Wikipedia. Your rationale for replacing the infobox is "I like the blue box". Well when a fair vote was taken the majority didn't agree. I agree with your comment here that the discussion is not easy to find. If you cant please let me know and I'll hunt it down for you in the archived pages. Mark83 18:03, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

1) This was not a "major format change", it was a revert
2) Wikipedia is not a democracy. If it was, I dare hope that everybody would be invited to vote, and the logs of "agreements" would not be so difficult to find. Furthermore, I do not think that it is obvious that a majority of people on Rafale are agreed with this agreement agreed with itself somewhere on WP:Air/goFigureWhatSubPage. Rama 19:38, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  1. I could argue that a revert itself is a major change, but I take your point.
  2. Fair point also, in fact I think "Wikipedia is not a democracy" is a guideline. However another one is "Wikipedia is not an anarchy". Surely there must be some consensus? As you have pointed out elsewhere the WP:Air "page content" guidelines are just that, guidelines, and are not binding. If you feel so strongly about the infobox what about an informal straw poll on the page. If you're interested the objections raised to the infobox were that it played havoc with various layouts (images, other templates and infoboxes etc). Another was the fact that most authoritative aviation reference books use list formats rather than tables. Mark83 14:58, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Char B1[edit]

Hallo Rama. Gorgeous picture of the Char B1 bis! Would any more — perhaps of other French vehicles at Saumur — be forthcoming?

Greetings, --MWAK 10:47, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The least I could do after reading Battle of France; I never had a such an impression of global understanding of the matter, even after Bloch's Strange Defeat and De Gaulle's Mémoires de guerre.
The images come from a site specialised in French tanks, http://www.chars-francais.net/ . I am not involved in this site, but I happened to write to the maintainer, and we have authorisations to use photographs by Antoine Misner and Claude Balmefrezol. If you need more images, you can try and dig on the site, or ask me if you have trouble with the French. I put links to the relevant pages of chars-francais.net on the articles of the Char B1 and the Somua S-35.
In addition, I might one day make a trip to Saumur specifically to photograph the whole place myself, but that's not for the immediate future.
If I can be of specific assistance regarding these, don't hesitate to ask further. Happy new year ! Rama 14:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A happy new year to you too and thanks for the great compliment! Indeed I must admit I had some worries about the copyright and I'm glad you have put them at ease. Access to some of the modern pictures of that site will be of great value to the articles about French tanks. Would you happen to know if any of the historical images are under French law part of the public domain? Of many types not a single exemplar survives. In the past I've spent some holidays in Saumur (the museum alone is well-worth the trip) but that was in analog times: scanning the old photographs I made then, renders indifferent results and scanning the negatives is a very awkward process (if only because I never filed them properly). So I highly appreciate your initiative in this matter!--MWAK 09:32, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, French copyright laws (actually "authorship rights") are less "Wikipedia-friendly" than US ones: government documents are not automatically in the public domain (if they even ever are...), and works are copyrighted 70 years after the author's death, so the historical photographs are almost always automatically unusable for us (if progress is made with the French "Historical Service of the Armies", I'll let you know).
I have been looking a little bit around http://www.chars-francais.net/ and I also noticed that some of the tanks did not have photographs. For really desperate cases, there is always the solution of drawing the tanks using historical photographs for inspiration. I did this for the Sagaie when we did not have photos yet.
I rather like analogical photography, but scanning indeed requires specific hardware. Scanning photographs themselves will usually not give good results since the transfer from negative to paper loses sharpness. Reasonable negative-capable scanners might be available from 150$; if negatives could be sent via e-mail, I would be happy to give it a try, but unfortunately this is not the case :/
Thank you again and cheers ! Rama 12:39, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you by any chance care to support me in protecting an article from chauvinist ignorance? The Arvanites are a linguistic minority of Greece, in the same way that the Bretons are a linguistic group of France. The Albanian nationalists can't get this simple concept into their heads, and keep pushing ridiculous POV into the article. An equivalent would be a British national insisting that the Bretons are a British ethnic minority that lives in France. Regards. Miskin 16:12, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, when trying to go over the discussion at 2003 invasion of Iraq I saw it has become a big mess. If I see it correctly there was a conflict between an anon and others and now the page has been blocked. I think the anon had a point that an encyclopedia article about any military conflict should not be written exclusively by three members of one the conflicting parties, in this case Pookster11, Swatjester, and Dawgknot who according to this comment all belong to the US military. I therefore suggest to get more people into the boat, that should take the wind out of the sails of bias allegations. As I saw you also edited on that page, would you be willing to help out? I am not certain that I have understood your rational. Rama 19:59, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lapaz aki! j'ai trouvé pire que les French people !: Historical revisionism (political)[edit]

Salut! Merci! Lapaz 13:49, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why won't you answe me? --HolyRomanEmperor 10:43, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry, just couldn't make up my mind about something intelligent to say. That happens often to me ! :) Rama 12:33, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I understand; but I asked you (in a friendly manner) how's it going and you said nothing. Was it really that much boring? Also, I though that that article would interest you.. (I was wrong :( --HolyRomanEmperor 22:14, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh sorry ! Well, as usually, you know, never enough time and funding to do everything I want... old age is looming upon me it seems. How about you ? The article is interesting indeed, but I am not competant enough to comment on it... Cheers ! Rama 08:12, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I pointed it out because once you asked me why are there so much problems in Bosnia during Chatting. I thought that this gave a clear answer. :S Anyway, I had bronchitis, but I'm OK now. Thanks for asking! --HolyRomanEmperor 22:47, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gradiva Bas releif Pompeii[edit]

Hi Rama I have come across this beautifull image that I believe you have captured, I would like to use this image in promoting my work in psychology is this possible? It is such a lovely photo, however Im unsure of what copyrights apply. My friends suggested I contact the person who took the photograph directly. Hope you can help Hilary

Greetings !
In short: yes, gladly.
In details:
  • There is of course no copyright on the work itself (not only is any concevable time extinct, but the mere notion of copyright did not exist in Rome).
  • The photographs [8] are copyrighted by me, under the Cc-by-sa-2.0-fr licence.
You may thus use them for any purpose (including for commercial purpose), providing that the credits mention the author ("Rama" will fit nicely) and mention the licence, the idea behind it being that someone who would like to use the images as seen in your work should have the right to do so as well (for instance photocopying the photo from your work and selling the photocopies is allowed). Of course this does not apply to your work (you are the holder of the copyright on your text and you have the liberty to grant any rights or restrictions upon your work)
A similar question has arisen already about this image [9], so perhaps, if you have more questions about it, you might want to skim through this; and of course, do not hesitate to further ask me if I was not clear enough. All my very best wishes for your work ! Rama 13:05, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please stop the repeated vandalism by User:TJive on the La Prensa page please, I have taken a look over his past history and it seems this isn't the first time he has consistently reverted edits without discussing them.

Salut,

Gun Politics[edit]

In the Gun Politics article, you reverted one of my edits; so I clarified the part you mentioned to reflect a specifically U.S. issue, so there's no confusion. However, in reverting the section, the term "fundamental right" remained where it was in the "arguments against gun control" part -- wouldn't you have wanted to change or delete that too if you didn't like the term being listed in the "for gun control" part? Also, it was unclear what else about my edit you didn't agree with. J.R. Hercules 23:12, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You make it sound like everything revolves around US politics (which is not the case); also, you make it sound like most opponents to free ownership of guns have only slight disagreements with proponents, which I have not witnessed to be correct. Rama 23:29, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you make it sound like it is universally accepted, within the USA, that ownership of firearms is a fundamental right. This is not the case, as can be seen by studying the law of several States, which prohibit most cases of gun ownership. Rama 23:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Rama,[edit]

for the compliment. I'm sure we've met on Commons. Good to see you here. Fg2 11:06, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit summary[edit]

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

Rafale vandalism[edit]

I'm amazed that an admin could be quite so unbalanced as to try to block a user for vandalism, when that so-called vandalism lay in adding back a problems section which is factually accurate, properly substantiated, balanced by positive comment, and heavily caveated. The vandalism lies in trying to censor the truth and hide the fact that the programme (like all modern military aircraft programmes) has had difficulties.

Your removal of the section removed praise of Rafale, as well as straightforward reports of comments by a serving Armée de l'Air General, by various National Assembly comittees, and by named aviation magazines. It looks terribly like narrow minded nationalistic censorship.

I have not been the only user to add the section back in.

JN

First, the section you refer to is highly debatable, fundamentally extremely slippery, and probably clumsily worded at best. But this is not the point.
What makes me revert this sort of edits on sight is
  • that it is not only this section that is involved, but also the "References" section.
  • your constant revert to a version which is obviously not agreed to my other contributor, without caring for any sort of discussion or compromise, if not quit trivial vandalism, is certainly disturbing enough, voer the time, to warrant an automatic revert and ban.
Now, since, according to the edit summary, you seem to be more prone to compromise and discussion, I will let you negociate with users involved on this article, like Mark83.
For your information, I am absolutely not an airplane fan, the Rafale leaves me quite indifferent, and I did not read you edit – I just have better things to do with my time. What I am after is people disturbing Wikipedia. Rama 06:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rama,

I'd like to thank you for your generally courteous reply.

I'll ignore the rudeness inherent in dismissing the section as being: 1) "highly debatable" (it is, like any contoversy, but the section always acknowledged that) 2) "fundamentally extremely slippery" (it isn't - it's an entirely straightforward summary of real, reported problems) 3) "probably clumsily worded at best" (I don't need lessons in English from anyone, least of all anyone whose first language isn't English. I wouldn't presume to correct anyone's French grammar on the same basis.

While some contributors (always unregistered and anonymous, and plainly xenophobic and/or nationalistis from theor edit summaries) have simply tried to remove the problems section, others, including Mark82 and Sylvain Mielot have reverted to versions including it, and have defended it in their edit summaries and on the discussion page. As I said, it's not vandalism to restore an accurate but uncomfortable report of factual information - but it is vandalism to remove it on nationalistic grounds.

One can have a language as his mothertongue, yet word badly. Things like "The Rafale is an almost unparallelled achievement ...", for instance, are not goos style in my opinion (sounds like empty niceness). Also, lots of these criticism are about subsystems and nowhere is it made clear whether they are integrate parts of the Rafale system or whether they can be easily replaced; on this respect, you can notice that important physical sensor systems are referred to the same way as software problems.
So if you do not like "badly worded", let's say that this part is perhaps understandable English, but not very rigorous and precise. Rama 10:44, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, frankly, a good part of this section can be summarised as "Defence Analysis likes gossips about the Rafale". And for your information, while French is my first language, it does not make me "nationalistic grounded"; there are lots of people who speak French without being French. Wikipédia et l'affaire Bogdanov[edit]

Salut Rama,

Rama 10:05, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UN Resolution 1441: Edit Dispute[edit]

May I ask why you are reverting my edits? So far I have not received any contact from you, or seen any differentiation in your reverts, that indicate what in my material you consider to be erroneous, or why you believe POV material I have removed should be retained.

See the relevant talk page, and please sign your comments. Thank you. Rama 12:47, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
