MobyGames[edit]

Do you work for MobyGames? Do you owe something to them? The reason I ask, is that every edit you make to wikipedia is a link to MobyGames, many of them, like the one you placed at Kingpin: Life of Crime are absolutely useless. The only thing that Moby games had was a few box art shots with their stamp on, and some nice adverts telling you where to buy the game. I'm not saying that links to Moby Games are invalid, we link to things like imdb. But when a user edits purely to insert links to MobyGames, it looks like you're trying to promote MobyGames and not improve Wikipedia. A lot of your edits have already been reverted by another user because of this. Now, I hope you continue editing here, but please people would take a lot kinder to your edits if you also started adding content to articles and not just a link to a commercial site. - Hahnchen 21:42, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.

I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.

Thank you.

I am sorry. I thought MobyGames links were OK. User:Frecklefoot a Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computer_and_video_games member created the Template:Moby_game for this purpose. If you check out the Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Computer_and_video_games page I think it says the links are OK. I happen to like MobyGames. It is one of the only sources of video game credits info anywhere and I know a lot of game developers really appreciate the resource. Let me know what you think. Ravi 22:19, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have to be sorry, it's just that editing patterns like yours causes other users to flag your edits as suspicious, especially as it's a commercial site. Most people at WP:CVG (myself included) think that some links to MobyGames are quite good, but it's just when a user constantly only links to MobyGames, it looks like they just want to contribute to MobyGame's Googlerank and popularity. - Hahnchen 23:03, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. I am a big fans of MobyGame but just discovered Wikipedia. I am still getting the hang of it here. FYI I think Google does not weight Wiki links very high because people can manipulate the system.
Not true. Google rates our links as highly as anyone else's. But I have to agree with you, mobygames links are useful. --JiFish(Talk/Contrib) 17:32, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
mobygames links may or may not be appropriate to the article. But if all you do is add links to them, you're likely to get flagged as a spammer. You might want to check out Wikipedia's spam guidelines, specifically the last point under number 5. Also, if you watch the pages you've edited and the link is frequently being removed by other users, it's a good sign that the link is being considered spam. ~ Renoah 19:08, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And how do you justify elevating a MobyGames link above the official site? I know the official page is barely a pamphlet, but it always makes sense to have the official site first. -- JamesHoadley 21:31, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. That was a mistake. You are correct. The official site obviously should be first. Thanks for pointing it out. Ravi 18:03, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, sweet. --JamesHoadley 23:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MobyGames spamming[edit]

Please stop. If you continue to use Wikipedia for advertising, you will be blocked from editing. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 11:45, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. Your edits to Wikipedia thus far have consisted entirely of adding MobyGames links to video game articles. In some cases these links are very helpful and allow Wikipedia users access to interesting information, in other cases these links add virtually no information and serve only to direct the user to a commercial site. I'm sorry if I have misinterpreted the intent of your contributions, but their unilateral nature serves only to bring more hits to MobyGames, i.e. using Wikipedia to promote that website. If you were to consider adding links to other sites as well, like say GameRankings, GameFAQs, fansites, or if you were to actually contribute content instead of external links, your contributions would be considerably more appreciated and perceived as neutral and non-advertorial. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 23:18, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
