Pictures in Loudonville, Ohio article.[edit]

Hi Rcroberts. Say, I saw that you uploaded a couple of pictures for the Loudonville, Ohio article. They're great pictures, but I don't think we can use them. You got them off a website, and their copyright is probably held by the person who took them, or the owner of the website (the town of Loudenville or whomever). And Wikipedia can't use copyrighted material, as a general rule. This is partly because our policy is that any material is Wikipedia is (more or less) free for anyone to take. Therefore pictures on Wikipedia basically lose their copyright protection (to simplify).

It kind of stinks, but that's the way it is. So the pictures will probably be deleted soon, unless you yourself actually do hold the copyright, or they are not copyrighted, or something like that. If that is so, you should go to the pictures and say that. In future -- when you upload a picture, you'll see a pull-down list of all the various ways a picture can be allowed (copyright expired, fair use, etc.). If the picture you are uploading doesn't fit in one of those categories, it's probably not alllowed to be used on Wikipedia. This page explains it all: Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.
