I've corrected a few of the photos on Commons. But, you need to provide more than "bought on eBay" or "inherited from mother" as a source. Remember, even if you upload the photo, you are not the author. You'll need to provide where the photo was published. If it came from a book or is an original image, the source field should state so. The photo might even have some information about photographer, etc. As far as a copyright tag, anything published prior to 1923 is automatically in the public domain and should use the {{PD-1923}} tag.
