My use of scripts to correct spelling and formatting

I currently use WP:AWB, the spelling correction script of User:Wmahan/Spelling, and the live spelling script of User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool in an attempt to correct spelling mistakes or typos and to correct formatting to meet wikipedia standards defined in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. I make mistakes now and again, so if I do make a mistake, please report it here and I'll repair it and try to update my scripts / usage procedures so I don't make the mistake again. Spelling Correction For Jean Harris: I noticed that you changed "pled" to "plead" in a spelling correction for the Jean Harris article. For your information, "pled" was correct in the first place. "pleaded" is also correct, but "plead" is incorrect in the sentence. I'll give you a chance to correct it again. Done. You're right. I've changed the Wiktionary entry, and given a citation on the Talk page (from Fowler's). It's billed there as non-standard, but increasingly common in print (and Googling reveals the extent of its usage). If you could avoid making sweeping non-changes like this one, I'd appreciate it; they don't serve any purpose, but make the diffs useless. (Also, they can be taken as rude or imperious, as they impose one editor's preference without any actual benefit, much like changing an article from U.K. spelling to U.S. spelling. I'm sure that wasn't your intent, though.) It's not a huge deal, it would just make me happier. :-)

Correct wikipedia formatting has a non-breaking space for units such as millimetres, so I'm correcting them as part of my misspelling correction. In this case it's probably unnecessary to correct them, but they don't break the links, so I haven't bothered to cancel those changes. Rjwilmsi 18:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

In which case I think my edit was correct. However, I do understand the need to quote sources directly and carry over spelling mistakes with a [sic] etc. and I'm trying to write my script / perform edits in such a way that these quotes aren't 'corrected'. refered misspellings

sure I can get that. i'll make it my next run. 'refered' is one of the top most common ones, along with 'prefered', 'occured' and 'offical'. those double r's get people. i haven't run it for refered though in about a month so it must be piling up! JoeBot 14:44, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Saiful azam

The above article listed his name in the text as Saif-ul Azam and when you spelled checked you changed it to Saif-upload Azam. Correction of "Misspellings" that shouldn't remain

Rjwilmsi,

I think the correction of numerous misspellings is honorable. I found a few instances where misspellings are being improperly applied. The ones I'm particularly referring to are corrections to quotations of people who lived long enough ago to use non-contemporary spellings of English words that are also not incorrect either.

For example, the title "Compleat Works of Shakespeare" should be left alone.

The quote in Early life of Joseph Smith, Jr. referring to the "fulness of the Gospel" should probably be left that way.

Does each edit go through any sort of manual oversight, or is it a mass search-and-replace? When corrected to a modernly spelling recognized as correct, these sorts of edits are difficult to detect, as when I see the "Complete" works of Shakespeare, I (and probably most people) don't see anything inherently wrong unless I am overly familiar enough to know there's a misspelling that should persist.

I am curious about your thoughts regarding ways to leave these sorts of archaic spellings included, noting that I tend to believe that the value in correcting zillions of spelling errors to the encyclopedia is probably far greater than the hassle of a few people having to revert the odd change that shouldn't have been changed. Spelling Script

Hi, thanks for correcting spelling. But I think in your script is a bug. It correctly replaces spelling in Jiří Grossmann Rjwilmsi (Talk | contribs) m (Correcting spelling: beleive->believe) but it left additional unwanted character in word: establishedç -> established. UGM-27 Polaris

Hi, thanks for correcting my repeated and inexcusable mis-spellings of equivalent etc, but you do need to consider the context when making other spelling changes. Your changes of 'allotted' to 'alloted' and 'targetting' to 'targeting' are misjudged in the context they appear in. That section on the British Polaris programme (get it ... with mme...) reads badly when changed because it was written from a British perspective about a British strategy. As I (perhaps imperfectly) understand Wiki policy on these matters, spelling in either American English or English English (the Scots, Welsh and Irish have their own languages, LOL) is perfectly acceptable, and where there is a spelling conflict the context should indicate which is most suitable. Its not a big deal; not worth dying in a ditch for, but a reversion would be appreciated. Brian.Burnell 12:31, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Bank of Korea

Just want to let you know that I reverted the typo correction in Bank of Korea from "preceded" back to "preceeded". The typo is part of the script of Template:Infobox central bank. Like I said, it's just to let know this situation happend. And fixing the template means fixing every page that use that template (even though it's a lesser used line).

Spelling of "Staf"

Thank you for catching the typos in the article on the Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn". I have reverted one of your revisions. "Staf Nees" is the proper spelling of the name of the former director of the school. Staf is a Flemish name, short for Gustaf, although in my research I have never come across documents of his in which he was designated as Gustaf.

Spelling "corrections" in Canonical hours

When you go through fixing spelling mistakes using AWB, can you please be more careful to check whether the word used is grammatically sound in the sentence? Not necessarily true; if someone wants to use the "maryland" reference again then they have to use the capitalized version, else change them back. It may not break the current version of the page but it's quite annoying. For example, the code below breaks. Tuxide 19:42, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
