New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 06:54, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

I noticed you have been really busy fixing up dates in references. I'm sorry you had to fix up a lot of articles (like Verbandsliga Bremen, to just name one of many) I've created or added contend. Unfortunatly, I wasn't aware then how to write the dates in references properly. I do now. Thanks for the hard work and once again, sorry to have caused you so much work. No problem, you're not the only one ;) Rjwilmsi (talk) 23:16, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Gracias

Thanks for fixing the dates in Nuestra Familia, I've written that and several other articles, and always seem to botch how the dates are set up. 74.228.158.68 (talk) 05:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

AWB

Hi, I note that you have been using AWB to make corrections to dates such as [1]. I suppose you must have used regular expressions to aid you in this? I would be most appreciative if you may share the code for this so that I do not have to rewrite an expression which automatically changes the formatting of dates? Thanks loads in advance!--Huaiwei (talk) 20:35, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I wondered how long it would be before somebody noticed ;) Here you go - User:Rjwilmsi/accessdate. I believe that these corrections are accurate. You may be put off by the long list, so I won't explain all the fixes. However, start using it with caution and feel free to post back. After further testing and refinement I hope/intend that this will become an AWB general fix. Thanks for your interest Rjwilmsi (talk) 20:51, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
My God you are a genius! :D My next question will probably make you laugh, but how do I use that with AWB then? I have been relying on the "find and replace" feature so far and I can't really tell how this works with that. Pardon me for my ignorance!--Huaiwei (talk) 21:41, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
That's the relevant entries for the find & replace section of the XML file that AWB saves settings in - you should be able to work it out. Rjwilmsi (talk) 23:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah I managed to figure it out. A million thanks for the tip-off!--Huaiwei (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

If you're using AWB to change accessdate formats in citation templates (which my watchlist shows you are), please make sure you change ALL the accessdate fields, not just one or two. Thanks. Carré (talk) 06:41, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: examples of missed ones: Battle of Albuera, Battle of the Gebora, Battle of Barrosa and Armand Philippon. I changed the remaining ones on those articles yesterday. Carré (talk) 13:39, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, thanks for your input, but I actually made a deliberate decision not to automatically correct things like accessdate = 17 January 2008 as with the citation template, these display correctly as Retrieved on 17 January 2008, and if changed to accessdate = 2008-01-17 then the date wikilinking is removed i.e. Retrieved on 17 January 2008 is shown (if you check the articles you changed, you will notice this). Conversely for the cite news, and cite web templates correcting the date to YYYY-MM-DD format works as the output date is then wikilinked. Due to this issue (template bug?) I'm not going to fix these dates as I can't make a template dependent-fix, but I've included some more fixes for incorrectly wikilinked dates. Please post back if you have further info about this issue. Thanks Rjwilmsi (talk) 18:08, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I noticed you use AWB. I was approved for it a couple of weeks ago. Would you mind telling me how to access all the features? I read the manual, but that didn't help. The only thing I can do is fix spelling errors. What I'm asking is, how do you make it find all those errors automatically? Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 23:00, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, fixing spelling errors is what I've spent about 70,000 edits doi0 and is my long-term use of AWB. However, in the last couple of weeks I've come across the date format fix described above and am using find and replaces listed at User:Rjwilmsi/accessdate to correct them. The list is written by me manually, and is still a work in progress. I then apply it on lists of articles by searching the wiki, but it can be hard to find results, so I have a (very slightly) modified SVN version of AWB that can skip through large volumes of articles and log ones with changes without applying them. I then process those articles with changes later. Hope that helps Rjwilmsi (talk) 23:06, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I saw the code: what do you do with it? Cheers, Kodster (You talkin' to me?) (Stuff I messed up) 21:17, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I note you changed access dates I had previously entered [2] in William Kelly (inventor) to a different form. Is there a guideline or policy which requires that dates be stated in the format you prefer? Why is "August 6, 2006" less correct than "2006-08-06?" Per WP:ENGVAR neither the British nor the U.S. variants of English are more correct. Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Chronological items says "ISO 8601 dates (1976-05-13) are uncommon in English prose and are generally not used in Wikipedia. However, they may be useful in long lists and tables for conciseness and ease of comparison." It also says "Correct: 14 February, February 14 ." Thanks. Edison (talk) 17:50, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Answer: yes. I will post a full response on the user's talk page. Rjwilmsi (talk) 17:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt reply. My only suggestion, then, is to use an edit summary which refers to Template:Citation rather than merely to "fixing" the previous format, without reference to the standard. It should be clear in the edit summary that it is more than personal preference. The Template:Citation says the "unlinked" ISO 8601 date form should be used, but I see the year, month and date are Wikilinked after your revision. Does that equal "unlinked ISO 8601?" Thanks again. Edison (talk) 18:14, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
The template standards require the inserted date to be unlinked and in YYYY-MM-DD format (ISO 8601) e.g. 2008-04-15 and not 2008-04-15 but the template markup may then wikilink this - the cite web one does but the citation one doesn't. I could change my edit summary to link to Template:Citation but if I make typo fixes at the same time this may be misleading to some users. Rjwilmsi (talk) 18:23, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Late reply on your corrections on article Cramer Systems

Hi, tks for correcting all my typos etc. I couldn't use my normal spelling checker and it was probably toooo late to write. Also see my user page about language errors. Tks again, --JanT (talk) 21:18, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

WP:HAU has a new format

Due to popular demand, HAU has a new look. Since the changes are so dramatic, I may have made some mistakes when translating the data. Please take a look at WP:HAU/EU and make sure your checkmarks are in the right place and feel free to add or remove some. There is a new feature, SoxBot V, a recently approved bot, automatically updates your online/offline status based on the length of time since your last edit. To allow SoxBot V to do this, you'll need to copy to your userpage. Obviously you are not required to add this to your userpage, however, without this, your status will always be "offline" at HAU. Thanks. Useight (talk) 17:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Hope

Someone gives you barnstarts or flowers (or the horrible wiki love stuff but i really wouldnt want to wish that on anyone really) - for your marvellous awb work - you deserve it! - good to see you in action - notice in oz and indonesia project your stuff - thanks if no one else says so specially ! Changing Micheal to Michael

Hi, just to let you know that the Irish version of the name "Michael" is Míchéal/Mícheál (often wrote simply as Micheal), so good faith edits by yourself changing Micheal to Michael are often wrong, especially in relation to Irish articles, such as your edit to Gaelic handball here. I know you're not making the mistake intentionally, just letting you know. Thanks. Derry Boi (talk) 21:41, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

My apologies, I hadn't realised. I've removed the incorrect entry from the typo list. I'll review my recent edits for false hits. Rjwilmsi (talk) 21:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Go raibh maith agat (thanks). Derry Boi (talk) 22:05, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the copy edits. Bearian (talk) 23:24, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

No problem, I've wikified the dates in the article too. It also looks like the web references would be better if referenced using the cite web template - see Template:Cite web. Rjwilmsi (talk) 23:33, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
You were one of the editors who contributed to the above article. Since the article has stabilised and I have added proper references as well as provided a NPOVs references, I suggest final edits by the editors who were contributing to the article. Following the general proofing and copyedit, I would suggest nominating it towards GA (Good Article). Wikidās- 14:22, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
