July 2012 Study of authors of health-related Wikipedia pages

Dear Rjwilmsi

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Barrett's Osophagus. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please visit my Talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance. Hydra Rain (talk) 17:09, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Also just saw you edited Age-related muscular degeneration. I think it is quite remarkable how from a random sample of 20 articles and a random sample of authors I came across you twice!! Meant to be? :)

Hydra Rain (talk) 21:49, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Rjwilmsi, thank you for you interest in my disseration research project. I would like to ask you to complete a brief online questionnaire, following this link https://opinio.ucl.ac.uk/s?s=18871 Once you complete the survey I would like to talk to you about your editing experiences and motivations you have for doing so. I can talk to you either through Skype/phone or if you prefer to answer the interview questions in a written form then you can e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk and I will send you the ethics form and the questions. Thank you so much and you input is greatly appreciated. Nuša Hydra Rain (talk) 16:40, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Hello Rjwilmsi, thank you for completing the questionnaire. You have indicated that you would like to be interviewed. May I ask what method would you prefer? I can send you the questions to complete in your own time or we can have a chat over Skype/phone/in person. Hydra Rain (talk) 22:23, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Questions about CiteCompletion edit

Hi Rjwilmsi! Thank you for have your bot use CiteCompletion to make this edit to the Boom! Studios page. A few questions for you:

  1. If your bot is able to access the web page and add parameters to the reference, could it also remove the {{dead link}} template and |deadurl=yes parameter?
  2. If the |accessdate= parameter is not present or not populate it, could your bot add/populate it with today's date? (I've read User:Rjwilmsi/CiteCompletion, where one instance of |accessdate= is struck thru but others aren't, so I'm not sure what you're trying to communicate in your documentation.)
  3. In this edit, the bot accidentally removed the single quote from the beginning and end of the title.

Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 22:00, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

1) The bot task is not authorised for that, though I think it would be reasonable to remove {{dead link}} tags that were added by my bot
2) Prior discussion established that bots should never set |accessdate=.
3) I'll look into that fault. Rjwilmsi 06:28, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Transparent ceramics

Hi. An Anonymous IP just made a couple of edits over at Transparent ceramics. The changes do not appear to be supported by sources and could be WP:OR. And maybe they are OK. Would you mind double checking their edits and see if they are acceptable? Thanks. Steve Quinn (talk) 00:07, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

FAC/Cancer pain

Hi. Just letting you know I've nominated Cancer pain: Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Cancer_pain/archive1. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 07:27, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Incorrect insertion of Persondata by RjwilmsiBot

On Jacques (novel) see [1]. Yobot had earlier made a similar error on the talk page which I will report too. Regards --Quiet Editor (talk) 15:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Actually on closer inspection I found that an earlier edit had tagged the article with Category:1833 births which probably explains the edits by both bots. I've left a note with the editor who made that change, and left YoBot's owner in peace. Thanks --Quiet Editor (talk) 15:59, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

A couple more changes related to SVN 8253 & 8256

Greetings Rj, I noticed the changes above and wanted to suggest a couple more to the list.

Cheers. Kumioko (talk) 13:11, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Also, any thoughts on this one? Should I submit this as a bug? Kumioko (talk) 23:41, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Where's an example of AWB causing problems in actual links to these pages? Thanks Rjwilmsi 06:39, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
As far as I know there isn't but I was trying to prevent it from being a problem but I can wait until they actually come up if you want. Kumioko (talk) 11:09, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

AWB logic to add bullets to references

Since AWB only bulletizes External links and not references I was thinking of adding a feature request for this. One example is Clyde Fant. I think it would look a lot better if they were bulletized rather than not. Since you deal with a lot of reference issues though I thought I would run it by you first before I do. What do you think about this? Kumioko (talk) 23:37, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Articles with references like that tend to need wider cleanup. I'm not convinced we can accurately bullet only what should be in references. Are you aware that there is already a right click menu option in the AWB text editor to bullet a text selection? Rjwilmsi 06:38, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Never noticed that before, learn something new everyday. Thanks again. Kumioko (talk) 11:11, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

AWB not seeing some bare refs

In reference to the bug I submitted where AWB wasn't catching some bare URL's. Here is a better example Ron Bean. Kumioko (talk) 00:48, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to workshops on editing Wikipedia

Dear Rjwilmsi,

We are a team of researchers at the University of Oxford and AU Sharjah, researching the experiences of editors of content about the Arab world on Wikipedia. We are interested in your experiences of editing Wikipedia and are organising two events that we think you would be an excellent contributor to.

First, we are hosting an online wiki focus group about contributing to Wikipedia in Arabic and to articles about the Middle East and North Africa. We are interested in what barriers you perceive to exist in Wikipedia, how articles can be made better and generally what can be done to expand and improve Arabic Wikipedia and Wikipedia articles about the Arab world. This discussion will take place on a MediaWiki hosted at our institution and be available in English and Arabic. We will allow users to create their own discussion pages in addition to our discussions.

Second, we are hosting face-to-face workshops in Cairo from 21st-22nd October 2012. If you are interested in this we should be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for up to twenty participants. This workshop will cover similar themes to the online discussion but will allow participants to meet one another and benefit from being together.

We will take care of the organization and planning and all you have to do is show up and be ready to discuss. But if you would like to help shape some of the discussion themes in advance, please let us know. We have booked time in the workshops for Wikipedian-led discussions.

More details can be found by expanding our “Frequently Asked Questions” below.

We would be delighted to welcome you to either (or both) event. Please let us know (wikiproject@oii.ox.ac.uk) if you would like the opportunity to participate and we can send you more details.

Sincerely,

Mark, Bernie, Ilhem, Ali, Ahmed, and Heather
