Wimbledon[edit]

Like I said in the emails the problem was the dash, for example 2011 US Open - Men's Singles is different from 2011 US Open – Men's Singles. The problem with the moving was for example you were moving a page here 1883 Wimbledon Championship - Singles which was already created and was redirecting to the 1883 Wimbledon Championship article, what I changed was where it redirected to and then moved the User page into 1883 Wimbledon Championship – Singles. I tried changing 1884 Wimbledon Championship - Men's Singles from #REDIRECT1884 Wimbledon Championship to #REDIRECT1884 Wimbledon Championship - Men's Singles and similarly for 1884 Wimbledon Championship - Gentlemen's Singles, but neither allowed me to move my page from the user space to the public space. I still don't understand what you are saying about the dash - which dash do I have to change, and what do I have to change it to ? Rmallett (talk)

I guess the easiest thing for you to do would to when moving a page would be to replace the "-" with &*ndash*; (without the stars) then redirect the other page to the one you just moved. Afro (Don't Call Me Shirley) 23:25, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also regarding the women's draws I added the 1890 Wimbledon Championships – Ladies's Singles and was just wondering if the 100 Years of Wimbledon covered the draw so I can add a source. No, the referee is in overall charge of the tournament. Allan Mills did it for many years in recent times. In the days of 'bad boy' McEnroe, he was often telling the umpire of the match to call the referee.Rmallett (talk) 11:34, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article names[edit]

Officially, the event at Wimbledon has always been called the Gentlemen's Singles or Gentlemen's Doubles. See for example http://2010.wimbledon.org/en_GB/index.html. The general article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Championships,_Wimbledon refers to Gentlemen's Singles and Gentlemen's Doubles.Rmallett (talk) 12:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this was the case with Naming Conventions then 2010 Wimbledon Championships - Men's Singles would be Gentlemen's singles and 2010 Wimbledon Championships - Men's Doubles would be Gentlemen's doubles. To elaborate WP:NAME does say "Consistency – titles which follow the same pattern as those of similar articles are generally preferred. Many of these patterns are documented in the naming guidelines listed in the Specific-topic naming conventions box above, and ideally indicate titles that are in accordance with the principal criteria above." Wimbledon competition dates[edit]

I now have the dates for all the major Wimbledon competitions from 1877 to date, as published in the 2010 Wimbledon Compendium, so I will be adding these to the appropriate pages. Lilian Watson[edit]

The guys at Tennis talk seemed unwilling to make a decision about Lilian v. Lillian. I have now received the 2010 Wimbledon Compendium by Alan Little, which (in the section on Wimbledon finalists) lists Lilian Mary Watson, born 17th. September 1857, Harrow, Middlesex, England, died 27th. May 1918 Berkswell, Warwickshire, England, singles 1884. That makes two publications authorised by the All England Club (Barrett and Little) and your (Andrew's) USTA reference in favour of Lilian. I propose that we follow the example of Amelie Mauresmo, where the wrongly titled page (without the accent) redirects to the correctly titled page (with the accent). Sorry, please clarify. In 1914, they were still operating the Challenge Round system, by which the winner of the All Comers Final faced the previous champion in the Challenge Round. Ethel Larcombe (nee Thomson) beat Elizabeth Ryan 6-3, 6-2 in the All Comers Final; then the reigning champion, Dorothea Lambert Chambers, defeated Ethel Larcombe 7-5, 6-4 in the Challenge Round. I think I typed "–" in the title; but when I typed the same in the tennis talk page, it appeared as a long hyphen, so I will try again with the next draw that I do. Is there another way of getting "–" to appear, other than by typing ampersand, ndash, semi colon ? Sure. Windows has a character map in accessories where you can find it. But when you edit in wikipedia you see a menu for special characters where you can simply click on the ndash under symbols. Neither of the Margaret Lewis pages refer to tennis players, so that link is erroneous, and I will remove it. The married name of Anita Lizana was Mrs. RA Ellis, according to Barrett, while it was Mrs. RT Ellis who competed in 1939.
