Welcome[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, Robertekraut, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome! Just like to add a personal note to the automatic template above. WP needs genuine experts so I'm glad to see you getting involved. WP culture takes a lot of getting used to, and I'm happy to respond to questions. One point to mention early on is that there is a Conflict of Interest policy (WP:COI) so to stay on the right side of it you should avoid editing the article about yourself. If you think the article seriously misrepresents you, request changes on the Talk page or in the Psychology wikiproject. Cheers, MartinPoulter (talk) 20:47, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to biographical article[edit]

I made some changes to your biographical article and added a Creative Commons-licensed photo. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Best, Madcoverboy (talk) 00:20, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll make those changes immediately. If you upload the image to Flickr, use a Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license, and point me to the URL I'd be happy to change the picture for you. Best, Madcoverboy (talk) 14:43, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As an aside, I thought you might also find it funny that Sara Kiesler's article is up for deletion. Madcoverboy (talk) 16:33, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your new photo should be live now. Thanks for weighing in on the AfD, maybe I'll spruce up her article as well! Madcoverboy (talk) 04:27, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Help with using WP in a course[edit]

Sure, I'd love to help. My schedule is quite open. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:19, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can email me through the Wikipedia email form (WP:EMAIL). I have given talks to students lasting from 20m to 2h; I'd suggest we meet first to talk about your course and during that meeting we could refine what is it that you'd like my help with. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:36, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity and psychology[edit]

Hi Robert, I just came across http://www.psychologicalscience.org/apswi and noticed that the focus of this initiative appears to be on WP as opposed to the WMF sister projects. I'd like to invite you to check out psychology learning resources, activities, research etc. on Wikiversity. e.g. v:Psychology, v:Category:Psychology e.g., some recent courses I've taught on WV include v:Survey research and design in psychology, v:Psychology 102, v:Motivation and emotion, v:Social psychology (psychology). Feel free to join in, send your students over, or encourage colleagues in WV's direction. WV tends to provide a much less daunting and much more encouraging editing environment than is often the case on WP, plus WV accepts lesson plans, curriculum, as well as original research etc. so often fits the profile of academic's work tasks better than the constraints of encyclopedic writing. Happy to chat more if you're interested. Sincerely, James. -- Jtneill - Talk 11:05, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I posted a review for this article on 9 April and have left a notice at User talk:Suzanne10 but no reply as yet. Just a heads up. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:19, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Psychology Barnstar[edit]

The Psychology Barnstar
I award Robert E. Kraut the Psychology Barnstar for your bold action in support of the Association for Psychological Science's Wikipedia Initiative, helping your students make welcome improvements across a range of psychology articles. MartinPoulter (talk) 17:17, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's great to see so much article improvement coming from your course, and I hope the students themselves get awards as we see more results. MartinPoulter (talk) 17:17, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Martin, and congrats Professor Kraut! We're all going for GAs on the articles, but Barnstars would be nice too! Brianrangell (talk) 04:11, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your latest comments, Robert. I'm convinced that what your class, and the APS initiative generally, is doing *is* important and the quality of the work put in by the students is very high. I'm concerned and sorry that I'm not going to find time to review the other articles they submit for GA: there's no lack of will to do so. I've put a call for other reviewers on the Wikiproject Psychology talk page. I don't think your class is listed in the List of school and university projects. It may be advantageous to put it there: there will be wikipedians there who are experienced with class projects and may be able to give similarly helpful feedback. Best wishes, MartinPoulter (talk) 09:41, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

how to find ambassadors?[edit]

Hi Robert - I'm jumping into the APS Wikipedia Initiative this Spring with my Industrial Psychology students at Ball State University. I'm trying to locate some wikipedia ambassadors to assist my students, but am getting stuck: the process does not seem to be well-defined. Any chance you can point me in the right direction or provide suggestions? Thanks, Michael Tagler, Ph.D., Department of Psychological Science, Ball State University Mjtagler (talk) 22:45, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can locate online ambassadors at Wikipedia:United_States_Education_Program/Online_Ambassadors.Smallman12q (talk) 19:19, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassadors for The Social Web[edit]

Hi Bob. Do you need a campus ambassador? I am pretty sure I am still the only one for the Pittsburgh region, so if you need one, I'll be happy to help with your course. Let me know if you'd need any assistance. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 18:41, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AFD: Dimensional approach/models of personality disorders[edit]

Hello Dr. Kraut, I am the creator of/main contributor to the dimensional models of personality disorders page. Thank you very much for your vote to keep the page - it is part of a class project and I am a first-time contributor to Wikipedia, so I am still new to doing organization, tone, etc. correctly according to Wikipedia guidelines. I am fully in support of editing the page so that is more up to Wikipedia's standards and plan to work on it throughout the week, and suggestions you have of what I could do to improve the page would be much appreciated. Thanks again! Allexe11 (talk) 22:06, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Help with article for deletion discussion[edit]

I'll look at the Dimensional models of personality disorders ASAP. My advice to the instructor (and students) would be to try to provide sources to prove the article's notability at the AFD discussion. The students should then incorporate them into the article. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 22:14, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GA assessment of DARPA Network Challenge[edit]

Hi. I have done an initial assessment of DARPA Network Challenge, which appears to have been nominated by one of the students on your course, but have had no response so far. Would I be right in assuming that the students have now finished this module, and so are unlikely to respond? If so, I wonder if such a possibility should be more clearly flagged, so that reviewers know that the articles are unlikely to be fixed. Regards. Bob1960evens (talk) 09:44, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bob, My class is indeed over. Even though some students continue editing after the term is finished, I suspect that most students won't return to fix problems that reviews have uncovered. I've sent the students working on the Network Challenge article a pointer to your review, but can' guarantee that they will fix the problems you identified.
How do you suggest I signal that students may not respond to reviews after a class is over? Should this be done when an article is originally nominated (e.g., by saying on the nomination that the editor will be working on the article until X date)? Or should this be something I do on article talk pages after the course is closed?
By the way, the the future, I will not allow students to nominate articles for GA status until the article has gone through an internal review by other students within the class. Robertekraut (talk) 13:53, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an expert on how this should be done, but a note on the talk page might help, or the GA review request has an optional Note field, which is often used to say things like: "The nominator is unavailable between ... ", or I used it recently for a Geography article to say "This could also have been listed under Transport", because it was about rail transport on a peat bog. Maybe something like "This is nominated as part of a course which ends in May, and the nominator may not be available after that date". Regards. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
thanks. Robertekraut (talk) 14:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paper[edit]

In your paper Wikipedia Classroom Experiment: bidirectional benefits of students’ engagement in online production communities, you should have a link to the AFD debate on page 9 to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dimensional approach to personality disorders. It's a great paper which covers many of the issues raised thus far for psych courses I've been involved with. Cheers.Smallman12q (talk) 13:48, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments on the paper and the suggestion. Unfortunately, we've already submitted the camera-ready copy for this article and can't change it at this point. 173.252.71.129 (talk) 15:18, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you're interested, your paper is being discussed at Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard#Wikipedia_Classroom_Experiment:_bidirectional_benefits_of_students.E2.80.99_engagement_in_online_production_communities. You are welcome to comment.Smallman12q (talk) 01:14, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Change in your user rights[edit]

Your Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. Going forward, users should create course pages through the Wiki Education Foundation website. That application is more user-friendly, and any content is automatically mirrored to Wikipedia. To prevent confusion, we'll be removing your "course instructor" user right, as it is not needed with the new system. This is simply a notification of the technical change to your account. No action is needed from you at this time.

If you plan on teaching with Wikipedia for the fall 2015 term, please email me (helaine@wikiedu.org) for instructions how to create your next course page using our new system. --Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk), sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:34, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
