Talkback Tyw7

Hello, S0aasdf2sf. You have new messages at Tyw7's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

By the way do you like my new signature? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 12:21, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Do you advise opening up a WikiProject Software IRC channel #WikiProject Software. Please respond on my talk page. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 03:10, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Do you have any bots or know someone who control a bot to send a message to all WikiProject Software members asking if they are still active and also make them aware on the Irc channel. Could you also ask your friends and fellow editors to join WikiProject Software. In addition, I have been seeing some ads of other WikiProjects, think you could design an ad for WikiProject Software? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 23:29, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
No, I'm sorry, I'm terribly inexperienced with bots on Wikipedia. I will try to recruit people for WikiPjt Software. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 00:54, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

MSE

Hello, well on the MSE web site it does say that it is currently only available for those specific countries, so I'm assuming it probably is. I live in Canada and I'm not able to download it so I get that message. Eelam StyleZ (talk) 14:44, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Symantec AntiVirus

Why not join me at the IRC channel? Click Here for instant access.

I think they are both the same product? Although I can't find any sources, I think people might assume that the AntiVirus produced by Symantec is called Symantec Antivirus but in reality Symantec kept the orginal Norton trademark name and just added the from Symantec behind it. Did you notice at the bottom of Norton products it now says Norton from Symantec. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 13:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I digress. Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus are not the same product. SAV's full name is actually Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, see here. If we have to cite the company website, then so be it, although more NPOV sources are probably available. Thank you for the response. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 22:21, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

::Now I see what you mean. It's Symantec Endpoint Protection not Symantec AntiVirus. There is an article for it. I think that's the corperate version of Norton AntiVirus. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 10:20, 22 July 2009 (UTC) Wrong info. Symantec AntiVirus Cooperate, as long I read, is now being phased out in favor of Symantec Endpoint Protection. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 10:23, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Then maybe "Symantec Antivirus" should be redirected to Symantec Endpoint Protection? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 11:04, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

hey you

great to see you around! I left a "re" on my talk page. I'll get together with you soon on the AV stuff. Keep up the great work you've been doing! — Ched :  ?  02:15, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

It's just the summer break. General loneliness. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 12:05, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Help

{{helpme}}

How can I incorporate the page number of a publication when citing sources freehand? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 15:03, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

You can follow the same format used in citation templates, i.e., p. 168 for a single page, or pp. 168-9 for multiple pages. For example, if you used {{cite news}} in the following format:
<ref>{{cite news|url=http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=VekLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=z1kDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3933,1624298|title=Films|publisher=St. Petersburg Independent|page=13-B|date=June 22, 1984|accessdate=July 25, 2009}}</ref>
IT would format in the references section of an article as:
"Films". St. Petersburg Independent. June 22, 1984. p. 13-B. Retrieved July 25, 2009.
To do this identically, manually, inclusive of the page numbering, you would type:
<ref>[http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=VekLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=z1kDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3933,1624298 "Films"]. St. Petersburg Independent. June 22, 1984. p. 13-B. Retrieved on July 25, 2009.</ref>
Does that answer your question?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:43, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes, it does. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 15:47, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
Great. I wasn't 100% sure if I understood the question. Note that now that I am looking at the format of {{cite web}}, if I was sourcing manually, I would personally place a comma after the date preceding the page number, rather than a period after the date. It offends my punctuation analness to have a lower case p following a period. There are no reference format police enforcing any exact formatting style (the fundamental issue is simply to give full attribution so that others can trace your sources themselves).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:56, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Citing sources

{{helpme}}

How can I cite a source which people may have limited access to? Such as this site? I applied for an account there, and received access. I tried looking up the source on the original publisher's site, however no records were found. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 17:52, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

I think you just cite it, maybe with a note appended such as (signup needed) or (payment required). While free access is desirable in refs, it's not obligatory - many works cited are only available on paper, possibly out-of-print. Pseudomonas(talk) 18:09, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

How would I append a note to a reference? Will I need a separate notes section? Or is there a special parameter? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 21:04, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Anything that you put between <ref> and </ref> will appear within the "references" section - so you can simply write your note within the tags. If you'd rather have a separate notes section, you can do that too. See Marco Polo for an example (I recently worked on that, and I used notes). For more help, you can either;

July 2009

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from Talk:Keystroke logging. When removing text, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the text has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Favonian (talk) 13:55, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Ups, sorry for the spurious warning

Didn't see the edit comment. My bad! Favonian (talk) 13:56, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I was just about to leave a note, until I received an edit conflict. It's all right =). TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 13:57, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Disappearing text

{{helpme}}

Is Wikipedia having some tech. difficulties right now? I noticed when I copy and paste text in my sandbox it doesn't show up, however it does make the references section appear because after one edit it disappeared entirely. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 14:59, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi. No, there are no known problems. I suspect that you had a <ref> tag with no closing </ref> - but because there are lots of edits to your sandbox without any edit comments, it is hard to tell which part you mean. If you still need help, please describe the problem in more detail.  Chzz  ►  15:33, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello, a follow-up question to the above one. Please navigate to my Sandbox. Use your browser search feature, and copy/paste this string of text: "A startup application manager allows users to prevent applications from launching at login."

It appears twice. However, press the "edit" button and use the browser search feature again with the same string of text. You will only find it once. What's going on? It appears twice when viewing it normally, however the phrase only appears once in edit mode. I hit the edit button on the top of the page so I can view the whole page in source text, not just a section ... so ... you can rule that out :). TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 19:19, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

That text is in two sections; User:TechOutsider/Sandbox#Version_2006_.2813.0.29 and User:TechOutsider/Sandbox#Version_2007_.2814.0.29. If you were just editing one of those sections, then you would only see that occurance; if you edit the entire document (by clicking the "edit" tab at the top of the article), you'll find both occurances in the text. I hope this clears it up? Let me know below (I'll check back here) - or, pop in to the help channel and chat to me, with this or this.  Chzz  ►  19:26, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Let me make it ultra-clear; I'll put {{fontcolor|black|yellow|CHZZ-FIRST}} and {{fontcolor|black|yellow|CHZZ-SECOND}} on the two occurances, so you can see what I mean.  Chzz  ►  19:29, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Sandbox

I tweaked the 2000 section, and started the talkpage - and left a note. I'll look at it some more over the next couple days. ;) — Ched :  ?  22:41, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks a million. I see you've done some real good copy-editing; mistakes that easily slipped my eye when editing and later revising. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 00:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Software

What do you suggest as the new slogan for this WikiProject? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 13:21, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll think about it. You don't like the "Staying connected in an Expanding World"? Well, I have to say, that sounds a little generic, so I'll keep thinking. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 14:34, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
What's generic? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 10:18, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Common, in a sense. Online dictionaries may elaborate more than I can. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 02:21, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure what kind of technology you're interested in, but I started this article and I thought you might be interested. ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Sure, that's a great start. I'll work on it with you. I love how technology, some of which we think is like cutting edge and stuff, actually dates back to the 1980s and 1990s -- that's where all the innovation came. Touchscreen tech - 80s. Wearable tech - 80s. World's thinnest laptop - 90s, not 2008 :). TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 14:36, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
This looks like fun! I wouldn't mind helping out here too. I'm working on a FLC right now, and I want to follow-up on the NIS expansion - but in a couple days I wouldn't mind working on it. (provided CoM isn't too ticked off at me) ;) — Ched :  ?  23:53, 30 July 2009 (UTC) Note: I already posted a question on the talk page.

NIS

Do you think each NIS version should have their own screenshot as well as the requirements? Comment on my changes. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 22:44, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll be there in the IRC channel for about 1 hour tonight. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 22:50, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
System requirements should be detailed in prose. Please don't take offense, however I am going to relocate the system requirements sections to my sandbox, where they can be converted and placed back in the article. As for the screenshots of each version, I think one screenshot of the latest version is enough. Non-free images in a FA should be avoided when possible. A picture of a NIS09 or NIS10 box would be great. I took a picture of a N360 box and put it in the N360 article. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 02:51, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I might be able to get one tomorrow ... I'll try. — Ched :  ?  02:53, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Gee, thanks! TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 02:53, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I have uploaded the NIS 2010 but I don't think it should replace the 2009 version in the infobox because it is not the latest version. File:NIS2010GUI.jpg.

By the way when are you online? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 10:25, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Your NIS version

I have marked one point in your rough mockup of the article. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 22:55, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw your note. I was a little confused by the Ask search bar thing after I gone back and did all the research. It didn't come bundled with NIS2009, did it? I think it came with N360 v3 first, then an update installed the search bar. You said the bar is included with the latest NIS version. The latest is 16.5. I'm pretty sure 16.0 didn't have it, but I could be wrong. I don't know. Care to inquire at the Norton forums? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 02:38, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

It didn't come with 16.0 only with 16.5. By the ask search box is minimized by default. I have NIS 2009! By the way what time are you online so we can discuss about NIS with you. See you at the IRC! --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 10:31, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Mentor

If you'd like to help mentor User:Pedro thy master, I'll give you some background info. He was having some problems with his edits, and someone reported him to an Admin board. But all it was - was that he just didn't know what could and couldn't be accepted as articles and all. Anyway, he wanted to do an article, but every time he tried, somebody deleted it. I created User:Pedro thy master/Simmons family for him to work on - and he's come a long way. Learning how to format links, sections, etc. He's very eager, and he learns pretty quick. Seems like a nice guy. Since you're an old hand now at this wiki stuff, he'd probably appreciate the help. But that's up to you. ;) — Ched :  ?  03:15, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Can you help me in this disscusion

See ihave been told that you now a lot about music articals and a fellow wikipedian and me are haveing a disscusion about if this album should have an artical, could you help me. --Pedro thy master (talk) 17:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Sure. I'd be glad to help you. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 14:18, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, see the album is called Daddy Yankee Mundial, and the other wikipedian thinks that it dose not need an artical yet and I say it dose, the artical is redirrected, but look at the history and see. thanks TechOutsider. --Pedro thy master (talk) 17:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

You can create a section in the Daddy Yankee article about his upcoming album. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 17:43, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. --Pedro thy master (talk) 18:35, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I have my own YouTube channel. It's "Tech0utsider". I did a lot of videos on Windows 7. No, I do not have my own website, and my screenname was not inspired by the other TechOutsider. It just came to be when I was applying for a forum account and since it has pretty much been my login for almost every website ... forums ... Wikipedia ... YouTube ... etc. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 16:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Signature

{{helpme}}

Hello, I have a signature of Li Yundi, and was wondering which license applied to it. Thanks in advance. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 17:58, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I would imagine that you could use the same as on File:Terrys-signature.svg, ie {{PD-ineligible}};
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  18:06, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Or, if uploading to commons, {{PD-signature}}, AJCham2097 (talk) 18:12, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

How do I provide a source country to the image above I uploaded to Commons? It is here. Thanks TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 18:29, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Nvm, looking at the template I figured it out. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 18:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Book cover

{{helpme}}

What license would apply to a book cover published in the United States? TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 19:31, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

If it's from prior to 1923, or you know the identity of the author of the image and he or she died more than 70 years ago (that would prior to August 1, 1939 as of today) then it's in the public domain and takes no license and should be uploaded to the commons:Wikimedia Commons rather than locally on Wikipedia. Most everything else has no license, but rather can only be used under fair use. An example of an uploaded book cover providing a fair use rationale page you might use as a model is File:Revenge of the Lawn.jpg. This type of upload is only properly fair use in an article discussing the book itself. To put a fine point on that, you couldn't upload a cover of a book and claim fair use to use an image of a certain celebrity who appears on the cover, in an article about the celebrity. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:37, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Norton Internet Security

Did you know that Norton sells NIS that are installed through thumb drives? I saw it in the supermarket yesterday. It comes in a thumbdrive instead of a tradational CD. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 18:06, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Could you take a picture and upload to Wikipedia? I think that would be a great picture for a possible "Marketing" section. Are you sure it was by Symantec and not a third-party? I can't find them anywhere online. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 20:48, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

It was. I got banned. My new username is "Windowslive". TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 15:30, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Why did you get banned? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 20:38, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Someone claimed I was cheating the activation system because I was constantly switching between products, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, and Norton 360 ... that "TechOutsider changes products like a girl changes clothes!" I stated that I was not using any keygen, and me mentioning the word keygen got me banned. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 20:42, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
How could they have known? Make sure there is no spyware on you computer. And haven't they heard of "trying"? That's what 30 trial versions are for! --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 20:44, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
They didn't. Just a claim against me. I don't know why. I never offended him. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 20:46, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I have sent you a PM to your account "Windowslive" on Norton community forum. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions) 23:57, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I have PM'd you back. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 03:47, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Why hasn't the preview of this picture been updated to reflect the latest version? It's thumb|this picture, which is present in Yundi Li. I cropped out some of the border. If I click through it, I see tons of border on the top of the image. TechOutsider (talkcontribs) 02:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
