لماذا وصل أصحاب أيوب, ثم جلسوا صامتين؟ حسب التقليد اليهودي كان على من يأتون لتعزية إنسان في ظروف النوح, ألا يتكلموا إلا بعد أن يتكلم النائح. وكثيراً ما يكون الصمت هو أفضل ما نقابل به آلام شخص ما. لقد أدرك أصحاب أيوب أن ألمه كان أعمق من أن تأسوه الكلمات, لذلك لم ينطقوا بشيء (وليتهم ظلوا صامتين!) ولكن كثيراً ما نحس بأنه يجب أن نقول شيئاً روحياً وحكيماً لصديق مصاب. وربما كان أشد ما يحتاج (أو نحتاج) إليه هو مجرد وجودنا, كدليل على اهتمامنا به. فالإجابات المحفوظة والأقوال التافهة, أصعب أثراً من الصمت البليغ وشركة المحبة.

اعتقاد خطأ

يعتقد الكثيرون أن إيمانهم بالله يحميهم من المتاعب, فعندما تحل بهم كارثة, يشكون في صلاح الله وعدله, ولكن رسالة أيوب هي أنه لا يجب أن تيأس من الله لمجرد أن أموراً رديئة قد حدثت. فالإيمان بالله ليس ضماناً للنجاح الشخصي, كما أن عدم الإيمان ليس علة حتمية للمتاعب في هذه الحياة. فلو كان الأمر كذلك, لآمن الناس بالله لمجرد أن يصيروا أغنياء. إن الله قادر أن ينجينا من الألم, ولكنه أيضاً قد يسمح للألم أن يحدث لأسباب لا نستطيع أن ندركها. ويبدي أيوب هنا, وجهة نظر أوسع من دائرة تعزيته الشخصية, فلو أننا نعرف على الدوام لماذا نتألم, لما كان ثمة مجال لإيماننا أن ينمو.
