WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. story · music · places
Congratulations to that series! I never looked at it like that, but think I might join the club, even last year when I was determined to drop out completely. Tough, yes. Two days ago, I wrote that I remembered four subjects on the Main page and Vami.
The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago).
Yesterday I learned that a friend suddenly died; we both belonged to a group that traveled once a year for decades, and I remember her vivid talk last summer, same voice and sparkle as when we met. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:16, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

Possible FA work

I would be interested in working on some of the articles about Chattanooga TV stations (or stations around the state). I am very familiar with the stations in Chattanooga, as I grew up watching them. On a related note, one idea that I've had for the last year or so is getting WSM (AM) or Grand Ole Opry (or both) to featured article status by their 100th anniversary next year. In case you don't know, WSM is one of the oldest and probably most famous radio stations in the world, and the Opry is the oldest radio program in North America that still airs. This isn't something I've actually taken very seriously up until this point, as I also hope to get Scopes trial (which was also the first trial in the US to be broadcast by radio, FYI) to TFA by its 100th anniversary next year; however, this is certainly something I would like to consider doing. The article Rancho Solano Preparatory High School has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Zero sources, no evidence of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WYBC

Hi Sammi, first, I'm a big fan of your work to improve radio and television station articles and have been following them over the last year. Thank you for your contributions. Second, I wanted to ask if you entertain requests. :) I continue to volunteer as an alumnus of my college radio station WYBC (AM)/WYBC-FM (probably should be combined) and wanted to ask if you might be interested in improving it, or if you have suggestions on missing source material. I would be able to track down some free use media, such as photos and audio (station IDs and promos) from over the years, depending on the length of the article. It's an interesting station, being organizationally student-run as an independent non-profit separate from the university, but also running a professional FM station often at the top of the New Haven market. Let me know what you think? czar 14:04, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

Hey @Czar, these would be promising articles for improvement if more New Haven paper were available and still might be if a Yale student publication is. WYBC-FM screams "possible DYK" with the right resources. NewsBank has full-text articles from 1988 on for the Register, but that's it. If there is a full-run digitized version of the Register, it'd be with NewsBank (as this is a Hearst publication), and they don't even have it. Given the coverage area, the Courant (which I've mined for articles including WTIC-TV and the mammoth at WUVN) is not likely to be of use. By the way, no merger of those two articles would fly: the stations had lengthy and separate histories. What strikes me as odd is that Yale filed for a commercial FM in the late 50s. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 08:22, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
The student-run Yale Daily News is fully archived online here. It has more editorial control than most student papers (and call itself the "oldest college daily") so I'd consider it among the best of its class, but I've always worked with the understanding that student papers weren't reliable enough for the encyclopedia, no?
The lack of New Haven papers is a shame. I've reached out to Yale Libraries to ask about access to their digital versions of the New Haven Journal Courier family of newspapers. Yale might also have the Register beyond Hearst's 1988 archives (listing says to 1961).
re: split, the Yale Broadcasting Company used leaky cable before the FM and had other history (among the first to broadcast student television; running the Ivy Network; free speech case against the FCC that went to the appelate court; separate Internet radio streams) that might not fit neatly into dedicated articles on the FM and AM, but perhaps that's a third article instead of a merger.
I'll ask around about filing as a commercial station in the 50s—was that uncommon?
I wasn't sure if there were any other industry periodicals that might have more too, in case you have access to Radio Daily-Television Daily, etc.
Thanks for taking a peek czar 14:19, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Question on GenealogyBank articles

How do you create the clips that can be viewed for free? I saw you made that change on some articles I've created or edited and I can't figure out how it's done. Thanks. Billmckern (talk) 20:44, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

@Billmckern, I need to make a guide for people that have subscriptions, but there is a Clip tool in the upper right hand corner on the image pages.
  1. Select the area you want to clip.
  2. Select "Save to My Folder" in the tooltip.
  3. Enter a title (I always use the article title). What I like to do for newer papers is enter the page number (e.g. E-1) in the description because "Page 35" is not the actual page. I also usually enter a tag (in my case, usually a broadcast station call sign) to facilitate searching for your clippings in the admittedly deficient Newspaper Clippings search.
  4. Check the box at the bottom labeled Public. It's not on by default. If you don't do this, nobody can view your clipping!
  5. The clipping will be saved to your My Folder, but with a URL like https://www.genealogybank.com/doc/newspapers/image/v2%3A136518060B9CC65F%40GB3NEWS-19681DFEB8E81A96%402441981-1968156C318BE44E%4036-1968156C318BE44E?clipid=mphzvtkqzorpaeeghcajgvyebgqshpdd_ip-10-166-46-116_1710455849122. It will also be saved to the Newspaper Clippings section with a URL like https://www.genealogybank.com/newspaper-clippings/seen-channel-62-here-ur-officially-linked-tv-station-san-bernardino-valley/mphzvtkqzorpaeeghcajgvyebgqshpdd_ip-10-166-46-116_1710455849122 . You want the latter, and you don't need the page title automatically added. Note that the text after the last slash in the scond URL is the same as after the ?clipid= in the first URL. You can do a regex find-and-replace search like I did for existing clippings with clip IDs (find: \/doc\/newspapers\/image/v2*(.+?)\$?clipid\=, replace with /newspaper-clippings//, note the second slash), but any unclipped GBank links on the encyclopedia now need to be clipped. You can find these with a search like Special:Search/insource:"doc newspapers image" — note that some are archive URLs that need to be kept or, ideally, replaced, and I'm fairly sure some of the pages I work on have borked archives now for GBank.
