Mtnbox information[edit]

My information for the Mtnboxes mostly comes from a spreadsheet I compiled some years ago, but that's derived from publicly available information. For the translations, I use my own (very limited) knowledge of Welsh, and a pretty good online dictionary [1] (I like the fact that it's listed under /fun/ !). The relative heights can be deduced from the OS maps, but it's a bit time-consuming; I think the data's online somewhere (TACiT press, for instance). I always use the OS Getamap (click on a grid ref in any other infobox to get there) for the local information: where paths go to and from, nearby towns and villages, presence of hill forts, etc.. This can also be used to get a grid reference. Strangely, the OS gives spot heights in feet for scales above 1:50000, so you can even do the conversion from metres to feet using Getamap. I think you know the rest already; "listings" have to be deduced manually, or by seeing "What links here" (since there are lists of Hewitts and Marilyns for England and Wales, and lists of Corbetts, Munros and Marilyns for Scotland). There are plenty of other add-ins available to the Mtnbox, but which we don't use on the British hills much, like the "first ascent", "last eruption" and so on, but there could be possibilities for geology, lat/long coordinates and so on. I hope this helps you (and perhaps inspires you to continue south to the hills around Llangollen). If you think it would be helpful, I can send you my spreadsheet if you send me an email with your address. It includes all the relative heights, for instance. Another source would be the Yahoo! group mentioned at topographic prominence, although you have to join to get access to the data. --Stemonitis 08:11, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
