Edits to physics cats[edit]

Hi,

Could you please stop the edits to the physics categories, and join discussion in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Categories? A number of edits that you made were incorrect, and its getting tedious trying to clean them up. Also, please don't make any edits to math categories for a while either. linas 15:00, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Sorry about that - I guess I just got carried away. SeventyThree(Talk) 13:28, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

La Gran Sabana[edit]

thanks for bringing it to my attention. I was looking around the Spanish Wikipedia at the time, found an article about this important geographic area in Venezuela, and decided to translate it into the English wikipedia. I forgot to translate it though, so thanks again for bringing it to my attention. I use my subpages now for translation so I won't do that anymore. --Revolución (talk) 03:27, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem - I wouldn't have a chance at translating it (I'm not even sure what language it is!) so I'm glad you can. Thanks. SeventyThree(Talk) 09:31, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gahk, shared IP address blocked for 24 hours. Since this is the only page I can edit, a note to self:

  • Homeopathy needs most of the footnotes reformatted to use < ref >

Hockey Logo categorizing[edit]

Hey, most of those logos you recategorized are not specifically hockey logos. The vast majority of them are used in all sports within a schools's athletic department. A few of them are simply the school's official shield/emblem. Anyway, I don't care, just letting you know. ccwaters 14:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That makes things harder than I thought. I was trying not to move the school logos, but I obviously missed some. Almost all of the images were linked only from hockey pages, so I assumed that they were hockey-related logos - I guess I'll have to stick to more general categories from now onwards. Thanks for the heads-up! SeventyThree(Talk) 16:42, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories[edit]

I noticed your name in connection with the above. Q. Why do these cats even exist? Who can authorize deleting them? (I just think that this type of stuff will hang around forever unless someone knows how to clear it up). I don't think that there will be a population for single year cats.

Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories

Thanks for letting me vent. (Stormbay 22:03, 29 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Why do they exist? Because somebody (not me) decided that they were a good idea. I imagaine it was part of some misguided attempt at standardisation. I moved them into Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories to make Category:Underpopulated categories more usable.
Who can authorise deleting them? Any Administrator can delete them. The proper process is to go through Categories for Deletion - since there are so many similar ones, an 'umbrella' nomination would be better than nominating each category individually.
I fixed your syntax in your above comment - to link to a category, put a colon at the start (like this [[:Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories]] ). Without the colon (like this [[Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories]] ) the link disappears, and places the current page in the category. Another way to link to a category is to use a handy template called cat - typeing {{cat|Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories}} gives Category:Underpopulated (Year) in Canada categories.
Also, you need 2 linebreaks to make a new paragraph. I still don't know the logic behind that!
And finally, welcome! I don't profess to know everything - but if you've got a question, feel free to ask me and I'll help if I can. SeventyThree(Talk) 20:55, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the detailed reply! The clues to syntax are very helpful and I am going to look at the category in more detail. I was just going to post an event in one of the years and discovered the whole "mess". Thanks again and I may take you up on asking more questions. (Stormbay 22:30, 30 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Winzip-logo image[edit]

Hi,

thanks for the notice. The image was used in the WinZip article, in the erroneous belief that it was the WinZip software logo. As it turns out, instead, it is the *company* logo, and since we have no article about the company (WinZip Computing) the image is now unused. I don't know what the best solution would be. Maybe we could add the company article, but I don't think there's much to say about it except that it produces WinZip and a few other related applications. BTW, thanks for tagging the image for me. In retrospect it seems obvious that you can't claim fair *use* on something which is unused, but it didn't occur to me at first. --Gennaro Prota 11:19, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure the exact logic behind {orfu}, but I think it's more that fair use images are discouraged where free alternatives are availible, rather than because we can't claim fair use. Having said that, there's not alot you can do about logos, because they are fair use anyway. I'll categorise it as a company logo, and see if I can add the image to the winzip (program) article. Failing that, I'll have a look at Company notabliity and see if a stub on the company is acceptable. SeventyThree(Talk) 13:28, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see. OTOH, it may be easily seen that the image hasn't turned out very well. I guess we can let it go without worries. Please, don't waste too much of your time about this issue. --Gennaro Prota 19:46, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Sorry, I replied *before* before seeing you had added the image to the WinZip article. I seize the occasion to clarify that my intent was just to avoid you wasted too much time to save an image which isn't probably worth it. (I'm not a native speaker so I'm often concerned that my English carries the intended meaning :)) Yours truly, --Gennaro Prota 19:59, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I can't tell that you're not a native speaker, so assume the message got across. I didn't want the image to go to waste - if we've got it, we may as well use it. Not exactly in line with policy, but I don't think it's an issue. If you (or somebody else) decides it should go, I won't complain. SeventyThree(Talk) 20:05, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 73 - you wrote: Hey. It looks like you deleted Category:Battlestar Galactica stubs yesterday, but left the talk page. Since the talk consists only of {{cleancat}}, I was wondering why you left it. speedy delete[edit]

I didn't think anyone would be interested in discussing them. Oh well, live and learn. I bet someone tells me I should have speedy deleted them though. I've put them up the usual way -- ProveIt (talk) 23:53, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They probably will point that out, but if they've not been empty for more than 4 days then they're technically not speedyable. Although their deletion is a bit of a no-brainer. SeventyThree(Talk) 00:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how long they have been empty, although I suspect it's probably been long enough. Do you know a way to find out? -- ProveIt (talk) 01:04, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've never found a way. Categories don't have a normal history of the contents, because they're generated automagicly. If you know the subject you can check the history of some pages which should have been entries. I don;t think there is a way, sorry. SeventyThree(Talk) 16:09, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for updating me - I've changed my vote. Can you remember the name of the article which used to populate the category? It'd be nice to know so I can check the deletion. Sometimes people remove category tags from articles or misunderstand the CfD process, so it's nice to be able to check. I should have made note earlier, really! Keep up the good work. Bot help[edit]

I would like to write a bot that would search for my name (real and user name) being used in an article or talk page because I recently had an incident where a point of view was being discussed about a contribution I had made in regard to its premeditated deletion. Can you help? Thanks. ...IMHO (Talk) 19:41, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are several ways to do that, but I don't think you need a bot for it. If you want a list of pages you've edited, click "my contributions" at the top right of a page, or visit Special:Contributions/User:Pce3@ij.net - you can narrow down the namespace using the drop-down menu, if that helps. There are other ways as well - if you signed on the page, you could check "What links here" on your userpage (here) or talk page (here).
If you want to look for your real name, you could try Googling wikipedia (like this). You could also google your username, to catch places where it's used without being wikilinked. Bear in mind that google is a few days behind wikipedia, so if you're looking for something recent it may not find it. You could try the internal wikipedia search engine as well, but that's not always best (it's case-sensitive, among other things), and not always working.
Hope that helps - if not, give me another shout. SeventyThree(Talk) 23:30, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah Google is great for finding older stuff. I was able in fact to find two images that needed to be deleated I probably could not have found as easily any other way. My main reason though for making the request was to be able to come up to speed a lot sooner than it would normally take me to figure out how to write a bot on my own. To be honest even though I am sure that I will eventually come up with a great bot application the truth is that I do not really have one now. Since so much of the things that I have wanted to do over the years since I started programming in the mid sixties that I will have to take my mind back to that point in time to see if there is anything I did not or could not accomplish back then but can accomplish now. If you prefer just to refer me to some directed reading than that would be great too. Thanks. ...IMHO (Talk) 00:58, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to help, but there's not much I can tell you on the bot front. The only wikipedia 'bot' I use is AWB, which is more of a software tool and involves no programming beyond regexps. I haven't written any code which interfaces with wikipedia myself, so I can't help there - probably best if you point yourself at Wikipedia:Bots for inspiration and more experienced users. That said, I know a little of many languages and I'm always willing to learn. If you think I can help despite my inexperience, I'm willing.
I hear that the pywiki framework is a good place to start, but it all depends on what languages you know and what you want to do. If you want some ideas, try Wikipedia:Bot requests or maybe browse Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approvals for applications which got accepted. SeventyThree(Talk) 01:20, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Okay after a few hours sleep its coming back to me now... one of the uses I have for a bot is to help me build a list of the relevant characteristics of a particular topic or object. The for instance might be the various parts of speech used to define or name or describe an ant. For instance fire would be one and carpenter would be another, etc. The bot would simply produce a location code or link as a reference and maybe even add the descriptor to a spreadsheet list such that I would end up having a pretty complete list over time of all the descriptors used to describe or name an ant. ...IMHO (Talk) 12:36, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For that sort of thing (non-interactive analysis), the best thing to do is probably to get a database dump - here is a good place to start. You probably want the current version of all articles (about 1Gb compressed download). Using a dump will ease the load on the servers considerably, and you can do alsorts with it. Alternatively, I've seen a web interface for running an SQL query on the live database - but my link ([1]) doesn't seem to have it anymore. SeventyThree(Talk) 14:19, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks like the best plan in that case would be to download a list of articles and then do a special export download on each one followed by an offline analysis one at a time. I could easily write a program for my own system to do this in background mode. Do you know off hand where a table of contents or an index of each article is? Also do you know if there is a page or file that lists the articles which have changed during a specified period (the last day or hour) so the problem of keeping my analysis current will be under control? Found it! Thanks. ...IMHO (Talk) 19:40, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing you found Special:Allpages and Special:Recentchanges then. You might be able to use Special:Recentchangeslinked/Whatever as well. SeventyThree(Talk) 23:36, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes. These should do fine. Together with special export I should be able to write something using the MS Webbrowser control and a simple loop to get both the article name and access the article data to find each keyword modifier and go on to the next. I should also be able to write something to do the same using the list of most recent files. Should be a really interesting project. Thanks. ...IMHO (Talk) 18:38, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Glad I could help. SeventyThree(Talk) 18:53, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Pce3: I apologize if I offended you with my comment on Talk:Sorting algorithm regarding Rapid sort. I was not attempting to initiate a conspiracy to delete your article, just to invite interested parties to participate in the deletion discussion, both supporters and opposers. I'm sorry that I didn't mention it to you, I really wasn't trying to hide it. To directly answer your question, if you wait long enough you can get a pretty complete picture by either searching the site with Google or downloading a database dump and doing a fulltext search on the articles. Deco 00:27, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well actually my primary interest in a bot is basically to learn how to do one. The idea to scout for my name or user ID being used was something that just popped into my head I guess because I realised that I only spotted your discussion with Snow by accident. Its no big deal except that it just seems like your reaction to the Rapid sort article was to get rid of it in all possible haste as if it repesented some kind of threat (Please see: Systemic bias). So I guess I was just thinking that instead of constantly monitoring my contributions or watch list and again mainly to learn how to do a bot I'd ask SeventyThree for help. Its not a biggy. I'm sure that once you have a chance to look at the Check sort in particular that you will see why I have concerns about dropping my efforts in regard to eventual publication of the Rapid sort. The fact that it does have a precursor though which I use every day for the original purpose it was created should tell you something. So don't be too worried about the whole thing I'm just trying to do justice to the Rapid sort in terms of sticking up for my part and it's. ...IMHO (Talk) 00:58, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have seen that you are using the Cacycle editor extension. This program is no longer actively maintained in favor of its much more powerful successor wikEd.

wikEd has all the functionality of the old editor plus: • syntax highlighting • nifty image buttons • more fixing buttons • paste formatted text from Word or web pages • convert the formatted text into wikicode • adjust the font size • and much, much more.

Switching to wikEd is easy, check the detailed installation description on its project homepage. Often it is as simple as changing every occurrence of editor.js into wikEd.js on your User:YourUsername/monobook.js page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:University of Lahore logo.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:University of Lahore logo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:43, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MiamiOhioRedskins2.GIF[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:MiamiOhioRedskins2.GIF. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 16:20, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Big Sky Airlines logo.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Big Sky Airlines logo.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:19, 30 August 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 13:19, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Haeckel Ostraciontes text1.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
