August 2014[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Sexoffenderactivist", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because It is disruptive and promotional. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. BarsofGold (talk) 21:30, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy. It also appears that your account is intended to be used for the purpose of telling the world about an organization, person or cause that you consider worthwhile. Unfortunately, many good causes are not sufficiently notable for their own Wikipedia article, and all users are discouraged from editing in any area where they have an inherent conflict of interest. You may wish to consider one of these alternative outlets.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you. @Yunshui: can I suggest that this user name does not, in fact, give the impression of representing a group. First of all, it is in the singular, so they may be a member of a group, but WP:ISU explicitly permits such names and WP:COI actually encourages them. The name is no more objectionable than User:Republican who possibly belongs to the republican party, User:Activist who may belong to an activist group, or User:Materialscientist who might belong to a group of scientists. Secondly, the now redirected article the user wrote does not seem to be about any one particular group and it seems unlikely that the user is trying to promote a particular group. There is, obviously, a strong POV here, but that is not the same thing. SpinningSpark 17:14, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that "Group name" is the incorrect offense here, but I think the name falls within "Disruptive or offensive usernames", and think it's common sense that the user change it to avoid problems. Unless the user particularly insists on asking if the name is permissable, it seems a lot easier to just change it. 88.104.21.216 (talk) 17:38, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The name is declaring the user to be an activist against sex offenders. That's not offensive unless you are determined to let it be. Still, I agree it is not the best of choices. SpinningSpark 17:43, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
