Norman C. Deno

Hey Silver! I just started an article for Norman C. Deno. He is one of the most important researchers of seed germination ever, but he has very little recognition. Feel free to do some digging! He's definitely an excellent DYK candidate!! Best, Thriley (talk) 03:34, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

@Silver seren: I'm not sure. I have never written one! DYK "Penn State professor Norman C. Deno was one of the foremost researchers in seed germination theory, performing germination research on 150 families, 800 genera, and 2500 species over the course of his career"? Unfortunately, no. Biographical details were sparse. I'd bet you it's in the biographical entry I put in the further reading though. There's likely a good bit of personal detail in that, but I don't have access to it. Silverseren^C 00:32, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

David Vetter

Hey Silver! Superb work on the Norman C. Deno article! I made a mistake only a few minutes ago by accidentally making a main space article for David Vetter (farmer). I meant to have a draft going as I gathered and dug for information about him. I think it is similar to Deno as Vetter's career really got going in the pre-internet age, so many publications might not be immediately accessible through a quick internet search. When you get a chance, can you check out the article to see if you think it will stay up based upon the sourcing it has now? @Thriley: It looks like you've got plenty of sourcing already going on there. You can also draftify it if you feel you need more time. I think I might sit this one out. Vetter is...not a topic I would be able to focus on, since he's kind of a rather strong negative figure for me. I live in Nebraska and work on plant mitochondrial genetics using biotechnology. Vetter is one of the better known anti-science names here who has historically been complicit in harming biological science in general in the region. Silverseren^C 00:28, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

@Thriley: Not too much coverage, unfortunately. There is an episode of The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe that seems to cover him, among other topics. I haven't listened to it myself, so I don't know how extensive it goes into the topic. But it and Steven Novella are a reliable expert source. Silverseren^C 02:44, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Unfortunately, it is indeed about bubble boy David Vetter. He really does interfere with the search for sources. Hopefully farmer Vetter will get a long write up in the near future that can serve as a backbone to the article. So far, I have not really found that. Thriley (talk) 03:31, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

J. Russell Smith

Hi Silver, I just started an article for J. Russell Smith. He's a fascinating interdisciplinary figure. I came across his Tree Crops when I was young and it left a lasting influence. I think his life story has many different aspects that would make good DYKs. I'm going to try to get a book about his work from a library at some point over the next few weeks. Edmund Love used the term "One-arm" to describe the kind of restaurant he would not bother trying. I had never heard the term used before.
