Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Hello and welcome to the March 2023 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since December and our Annual Report for 2022. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new members, including those who have signed up for our current March Backlog Elimination Drive. We wish you all happy copy-editing.

Election results: In our December 2022 coordinator election, Reidgreg and Tenryuu stepped down as coordinators; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo were returned as coordinators until 1 July. For the second time, no lead coordinator was chosen. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC).

Drive: 21 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 14 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 170 articles totaling 389,737 words. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Progress report: As of 12:08, 19 March 2023 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 73 requests since 1 January 2023, all but five of them from 2022, and the backlog stands at 1,872 articles.

I am trying to edit the article on Sheol. It mentions a derivation of the true name of God that is absolutely blasphemous to the Jewish community. It keeps getting reverted despite being offensive. Is there a way to correct this? I replaced the word with "The Hebrew God" and linked to the names of God in the torah to try and compromise but the person reverting sees zero issue with the blasphemy and is defending keeping it as preventing censorship (bs) and being inclusive of other religions (very slightly true but they are all religions that co-opted the name) that use it while ignoring that the article is primarily focused on the Hebrew/Jewish interpretation. Hello RedactedHash, and welcome to Wikipedia! While I sympathize that this may be very frustrating, Equine-man is correct to mention Wikipedia's policy of not censoring it's content, as your argument appears to focus on the potential offending of a group of people. Were Wikipedia to adjust it's own content to minimize the potential for offense, it would be a herculean task to write articles about a wide array of subjects, such as articles detailing varying belief systems. Wikipedia's sole focus is on what reliable secondary sources say about a given topic, which Wikipedia then summarizes faithfully at the relevant article.
One of the core aspects of Wikipedia is collaboration, which means that whenever a change you desire to present on an article is reverted or undone, you are obligated to attempt to start a discussion on the relevant article talk page (in this instance, Talk:Sheol) to attempt to garner consensus for your desired edit. In other words, you would discuss with the objecting editor - alongside anyone else who decides to contribute - until some kind of agreement on what to do is made. If the discussion does not result in a consensus among editors for a change, the article would remain as it was prior to any change, so as to maintain the status quo.
You can make use of various tools to help generate consensus - referred to as dispute resolution - such as requesting a 3rd opinion, posting a request for mediation at the dispute resolution noticeboard, or creating a formal request for comment. Please make sure to read the relevant guidelines for these tools should you decide to make use of them. None of these tools should be used until an attempt for discussion at the talk page is attempted and fails to bare fruit after roughly 7 days (this isn't a hard rule but I think it's a good baseline).
In this instance, I would strongly advise you not continue to edit the article to invoke your desired change and start a discussion on Talk:Sheol. I see that there is a somewhat relevant discussion on your talk page, but discussing a potential change to article content should really not be on an individual editor's talk page.

Hello John Dalton Piercy. Could you elaborate as to what you mean by an "id"? Wikipedia only makes use of usernames. If you are referring to having another Wikipedia account, so long as you remember your username and password you can simply login and change the email. If you don't remember the password or username, and you lost access to the account's email address, then unfortunately the account is lost forever. PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

David Thomsen: Prolific Wikipedian and Guild member David Thomsen (Dthomsen8) died in November 2022. He was a regular copy editor who took part in many of our Drives and Blitzes. An obituary was published in the mid-July issue of The Signpost. Tributes can be left on David's talk page.

Election news: In our mid-year Election of Coordinators, Dhtwiki was chosen as lead coordinator, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo continue as assistant coordinators, and Baffle gab1978 stepped down from the role. If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself!

  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Welcome to Wikipedia, TDphoko! I assume you are wanting to create a page on Wikipedia? Information on doing so is available at Help:Your first article. Feel free to ask me to clarify anything there if you are confused.
I would personally advise you avoid trying to create a new page, though, until you get several hundred edits under your belt. There are a lot of un-intuitive rules regarding new pages which may result in frustration for you, as simply reading them once tends to not be enough to adequately adhere to them. Questions regarding the deletion of Veloren page

I have a few questions regarding this. My first issue is that Veloren is a comparatively small scale game and therefore it does not have very large coverage as it is not even backed by a large organization such as GNU or some others. Being relatively small on one hand creates a problem such as described by you. However there are some good points to it such as, it is the best example of (perhaps, only) a 3D open world voxel based RPG game and it's one of its kind and also has a large userbase now (around 10000). My argument here is not to really fight the deletion but I understand that rules are the pillarstone in this case. Games like Veloren really need coverage however due to not being part of a AAA gaming company or a large org, it can not easily get any coverage. Another reason might be that it has still not reached 1.0 as heavy development is still going on at the moment. Perhaps, with a wiki page, the coverage might increase. What's your suggestion on this? Remember that this is fully open source and Libre and also self-hostable so idealogically Wikimedia should also support it as the latter also promotes open knowledge. I appreciate you reaching out, Priyanshu1rai, and I want to be the first to say that I hope that the deletion discussion does not dissuade you. The template I left on your talk page was very artificial, and you would have been better served with a more personally crafted message. The deletion of content you contribute to does not in any way reflect whether or not the project wishes for you to continue to contribute. I have nothing against you by nominating it for deletion; I am simply upholding established policy for what I believe is the betterment of Wikipedia.
While I agree that Wikimedia would support this project ideologically, that doesn't necessarily mean Wikipedia is interested in hosting content about it. The Wikimedia Movement is comprised of various communities organized by language, with this being the English Wikipedia. Each community self-governs their own project, with some exceptions (such as all contributors - regardless of language - being beholden to the Terms of Use). The English Wikipedia has set very high standards for inclusion due to it's size, age, and public outreach.
The English Wikipedia project is not interested in, nor designed to, assist with giving a project or person exposure. It exists to create a quality encyclopedia of topics which already have sufficient notoriety and coverage, as old-fashion book encyclopedias used to do (and I suppose still do?) While Wikipedia is in a position to give exposure itself, this project is very much against it, and that's me putting it mildly. I've observed long-standing editors I consider to be quite polite most of the time become very terse and no-nonsense when dealing with what they perceive to be a conflict of interest, undisclosed paid editing, or otherwise a contributor editing in a promotional manner. This harshness is due to elaborate abuse and drama generated by corporations trying to violate what Wikipedia is not, our neutrality policy, and our conflict of interest policy.
My suggestion would be to vote at the deletion discussion based on what you feel is right, though understand that a Keep arguement that isn't based in policy will be given less weight by a reviewing administrator than one that is. If you desire to give this project more coverage, I'd advise using avenues that aren't Wikipedia to do so. If you continue to try, you'll simply be disappointed and receive harsh pushback, and possibly even be blocked if abusive or disruptive in nature. I've never wanted to actively advocate for a project before, so I'm afraid I'm not all that informed on where you could do this. Perhaps raise awareness on social media and/or create content about it?
As a side note, unlike social media platforms, when you write content on an internal page - such as this talk page - you have to manually tell the website to sign your post with your name. Welcome to Wikipedia, Rainmaker rebel! Fighting vandalism is a fantastic way to begin your wiki career, and it's fairly simple.
I would first recommend enabling Twinkle, a specific tool that a lot of editors use for various tasks. This tool is important for 2 things. First, it allows you to use a client-side version of rollback, which will allow you to revert all edits made by a vandal in a row - rather than having to undo all of them manually. Second, it will give you the tools to warn vandals to cease their behavior, which is required when reverting vandalism. This way you can later report the vandal to the noticeboard to report vandals to Wikipedia administrators and easily have them blocked from editing.
Note that on Wikipedia we have a very specific term for a vandal. Specifically, it's "editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose, which is to create a free encyclopedia, in a variety of languages, presenting the sum of all human knowledge." As a vandalism fighter you will need to be able to differentiate between edits which are harmful, but were in good faith or were tests of our software, and edits made for the explicit intent of defacing the project.
You can find a lot more resources on fighting vandalism at our Counter-Vandalism Unit. Should you be interested enough, you could even enroll in the CVU Academy, where an experienced editor will dedicate time to teaching you how to fight and spot vandalism.

Hello TopguyCb, and welcome to Wikipedia! A biography can't be uploaded in the traditional sense of you uploading a physical file, but you can create the article and potentially past the contents there. Information about creating your first live article is available at Help:Your first article.
I would highly advise that you try assisting in other areas of the website first, however. Wikipedia has very high standards for a live article which are quite unintuitive to newcomers. You may run into disappointment or embarrassment as, if your article doesn't meet Wikipedia's standards, other editors may start a public discussion to delete it. I would encourage you to create a page in your own user space (pages underneath your username that you can use for any Wikipedia-related purpose) with the desired biography's draft first. Then, you can ask editors, such as myself or at the Wikipedia:Teahouse, for assistance.
To do this, I would go to this red link and creating the page: User:TopguyCb/Biography. I would encourage bookmarking it as well, so you don't lose it.
For ideas on how to help Wikipedia in other ways, check out the Wikipedia:Task Center. I'd advise doing any task that interests you that is marked as "Suitable for all editors".

The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Articles on Wikipedia must meet our notability criteria, so for an article to be created about you there must be multiple independent and reliable sources that have significant coverage written about you. Otherwise, an article may not be created about you. Furthermore, presuming you are indeed the singer, our conflict of interest policy demands you disclose that you have such a conflict with articles or content relating to yourself, and you are highly advised against editing or creating any page pertaining to you. Wikipedia does this to maintain neutrality in its writing. Odds are - even if done in good faith - you cannot write about yourself in as neutral a tone as is demanded by our policies.
Assuming you are cognizant and fully complaint with the above information, the page Help:Your first article can help you get started. I would advise making use of the articles for creation process. Not doing so when writing about yourself is looked down upon very strongly and will most likely result in frustration on your part and comments from agitated editors.

Hello Rmadrigal3, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm sorry that you have become frustrated while trying to edit Pacifica High School (Oxnard, California). One very important thing to understand is that Wikipedia requires reliable sources be provided for all information written in an article. Even if something is true, Wikipedia requires it be verifiable - without exception - for it to be in an article. Your personal knowledge, or the knowledge of the school administration, may not be used as a source of information whilst editing Wikipedia.
All information you wish to change or update must come from a source such as the school's official website (with caveats) or, more preferably, a source independent of the school such as a local news agency.
Furthermore, your editing must fall in line with all of our policies and guidelines. This includes writing from a neutral point of view and that collaboration with other editors - which Wikipedia calls consensus building - is non-optional. Part of this is that Wikipedia requires that if any editor objects to the inclusion of content policy states the onus is on the person wishing to add it to achieve the consensus to include it. If you find yourself in a stalemate on the talk page, you can make use of dispute resolution venues to try and achieve it. Note that a stalemate is the lack of consensus after discussion, and not simply that you find the consensus to not be in your favor.

Hello Promnewyork, welcome to Wikipedia. Help:Your first article would be the place to go. I would advise against starting with a new article so early into your editing career, though, as there are a lot of guidelines and restrictions in relation to creating a fresh new article. Failure to adhere to them could result in editors requesting it's deletion or other actions which may be discouraging.

I always advise new editors to start with editing existing articles, counter-vandalism, and other less advanced tasks. It appears the Wikipedia administrator named Fastily has deleted your user page because you are using Wikipedia functionally as a web hosting service, or social media platform, when that is not what this website is allowed to be used for. See WP:NOT for more relevant information (and WP:NOTFB in relation to your specific case).
Acceptable material would be information relating to the topic areas you would be interested in editing or general information about yourself. My own user page, along with Fastily's, are good examples. I would advise you avoid doing so until you have a track record of editing articles, though, as it may be seen negatively by other editors if you continue to focus on your user page after being deleted for inappropriate use. Your user page has a certain degree of latitude on what you put on it, but it should be for the purpose of communicating with other editors what your interests are in relation to your membership of editing the website. It is advised that you not provide bio-data so as to protect your own privacy, and depending on how it's presented it may be removed speedily by an administrator. Hello Mcguiredw, and welcome to Wikipedia! The Moon is indeed currently semi-protected, which means only accounts which have 10 edits and are 3 days old can edit it. You have 2 options, currently. You can make 10 total edits anywhere on Wikipedia (presuming they are legitimate) and wait the additional 2 days. Or, you can attempt to edit the page again, and in the message explaining why you can't there is a big blue button that says "Submit an edit request". From there, you are given instructions to submit a request that another editor with sufficient permissions make the edit for you.
Note that you'll have to provide a reliable source which cites that the moon's mass is 1.2% of Earth's and also submit what you want the new text to be verbatim. Otherwise, the request may be rejected.

Hmm. The Wikipedia sentence itself does not mention a source- though it is common knowledge over the last few hundred years. The Wikipedia article itself EVEN STATES the 1.2% FACT FURTHER DOWN IN THE ARTICLE and has numbers that show the mass of the moon as .0123 of the earth - so the RELIABLE SOURCE IS THE ARTICLE ITSELF. The first statement is obviously a typo (the author probably meant to say the moons 1/6th the Earths diameter). Not sure why Wikipedia has trouble correcting an obvious mistake when the article itself states the correct information further into the article. Note that it will not let me edit the page and I do not get an option to Submit an Edit Request... I may be doing something wrong. Regardless it is not worth my effort to get 10 edits when a simple obvious mistake can't even be corrected. Mcguiredw (talk) 13:31, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry you are frustrated, Mcguiredw. Please note that Wikipedia is edited by a (albeit large) group of volunteer editors and is not maintained by professional curators. It's not that Wikipedia won't, it's that no one with sufficient permissions has spotted the error and/or desired to fix it (presuming it is an error; I am not interested enough in the topic to investigate myself). Presuming you regain interest, to submit the edit request, you would click on the button that says "View source" at the Moon article and then click the blue button I mentioned above. I really should've have mentioned that in my initial reply, and that fault lies with me. I've tested it while logged out and everything appears to be working.
Also, simply because information is stated in an article doesn't mean it's correct. Again, Wikipedia is edited by volunteers, so we cannot assume that any edit made - unless attributed to a source - has any backing. Now, if there is a citation in the article which supports it, then you'd just use that source (or if making an edit request tell reviewing editors which source already present is supporting the edit). —Sirdog (talk) 13:49, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
The article itself states the correct facts further down in the article and references multiple sources. The sentence in question has no references and is wrong. Thats my point- it should not be so hard to fix a mistake when an article has the correct information and references, but the incorrect sentence has no sources but Wikipedia says THATS OK- we will leave it in- the ten seconds for us to investigate and change is too much effort. If Wikipedia does not deem a simple factual error worthy of taking 10 seconds to verify and fix, I probably can't help. Mcguiredw (talk) 14:34, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

New articles require intimate knowledge of a large set of policies, many of which are not intuitive to understand. Wikipedia:Notability is arguably the most important. Your desired article topic must be notable enough, otherwise, no matter how well written it is, the topic is ineligible for an article and may be subject to deletion at any time. I'd implore you to try out other tasks first. A list of good ideas can be found at Wikipedia:Task Center.
If you are deadset on creating an article, Help:Your first article would be the page you want to read. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with the following policies at a minimum:
I'd advise using the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process. This way an experienced editor will take a look at your work and, if it isn't up to snuff to go "live" - as it were - they'll decline it and give useful feedback. Hello, source [10] for Electricity and Magnetism (Book) appears to be behind a paywall on the website on which it is cited (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00107514.2013.836250?needAccess=true) and it does not appear to be in print or any library I can find. Welcome to Wikipedia, Epoch5040! That's a really good question to be asking. While it is true an overwhelming majority of sources on Wikipedia are freely accessible, paywalled sources are treated equivalently to any other source, and so are allowed to be used in articles. If you have reason to suspect such a source, you can make a post at the resource exchange to request for someone to make the source in question available to you.
There are a variety of procedural activities on Wikipedia that tend to require an editor review sources (such as new page patrollers), and for editors who need to review sources that they cannot access, they tend to either drop the activity since they can't complete it, ask for assistance in reviewing it, or give the benefit of the doubt and assume it's solid (though extraordinary claims or claims relating to articles regarding people who are still alive are a different story and receive more scrutiny). —Sirdog (talk) 05:26, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. This may sound strange, but the the website seems to deactivate the paywall when I use campus Wi-Fi, but turns it back on when not on campus. Also, I reviewed the terms of service for this particular source and it is against them to provide the material that is behind the paywall to people who would not have access otherwise, meaning it isn’t allowed on the resource exchange (if not by the official Wikipedia rules then by the rules of the website). I’ll try to stay clear of paywalled sources in the future since they seem to be a hassle to deal with. I actually have another question. Is it okay to use sources that haven’t been listed on the page for establishing whether a source is reputable or not. In that case should I submit it to the forums about the topic? I thought of it, but the sources are relatively small and I don’t know if anyone would pay attention to them or evaluate them if they saw the forum post. Epoch5040 (talk) 05:49, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Back to your question... I apologize, but I am slightly confused by the question. A source's reputability, which we call reliability, is determined based on evaluating it independently on a variety of factors - such as to see if they have editorial standards for fact checking and the sort, among other criteria. I did not realize that I was logged out when I responded. Thank you for noticing and letting me know. I didn't think to check because most websites don't let you post on them unless you are signed in and ususally when I open Wikipedia it signs me in automatically. The oversight page for supression says to email them, but I'm not sure how to direct them to the post. I would really apreciate it if you could submit the request for me. Also, I apologize for the confusion in my question. When I said "the page for establishing whether a source is reputable or not" I meant the Wikipedia:Reliable sources page, though in hindsight I assume that lost of books and scientific papers that aren't listed on there have been used. I just thought that perhaps less popular sites for news/reporting have less evidence to show that they are valid sources since they have not been analyzed for authenticity before, but are ususally the ones posting about smaller topics so they are usually used for 'stub' articles (at least as far as I can tell). While you should try to find the answer on your own, if you fail to do so - or the resource confuses you - that is an entirely valid reason to ask an experienced editor for assistance. Welcome to Wikipedia, Downfall12! Making a new article is a fairly advanced tasked for beginners of Wikipedia. There are a lot of complex rules that, if not followed, will result in swift article deletion. These are really hard to grasp at the start without having some experience in how other areas of the site works. It isn't impossible, you'll just have a lot of bumps in the road. If you are interested in trying out other tasks, check out Wikipedia:Task Center.
If you are really motivated to write about Wings of Fire, the first thing you should do is review our notability policy. In order for a subject to warrant an article, they must have multiple independent and reliable sources which provide significant coverage of the subject. This is a high standard, one which many YouTubers struggle with. For example, other YouTubers covering Wings of Fire does not qualify as all YouTube channels (with some exceptions) are self-published sources, thus Wikipedia disqualifies them as supporting notability. Subscriber count, following on social media, and other statistics which intuitively support an influencer's relevance are all entirely irrelevant to Wikipedia in relation to them getting an article. The best chance of success comes from independent news organizations covering them.
Presuming you think Wings of Fire has a decent shot, I'd advise doing it through our Wikipedia:Articles for creation process. Here you will write a draft of the article to the best of your ability and then submit it for review by experienced editors. They will either accept the draft, and make it a proper article, or decline it and provide feedback on what policies it falls short of meeting.

Firstly, understand that Wikipedia is not a promotional platform. Wikipedia articles are required to be written from a neutral point of view and not praise or disparage the subject. We report in a neutral way what sources say. Providing an exhaustive list of items the winery sells, for example, would be inappropriate. Wikipedia does not house price lists. The goal of an article on the winery is to provide encyclopedic information about it. When was it established, it's history, major events that have involved it, and the likes.
In terms of sourcing, the sourcing simples need to reliably verify all information within the article. For example, to reference the winery's location, a citation to the official website listing the location would be sufficient. Most of the references, however, should lead to reliable sources which means they are independent from the winery and have a reputation for fact checking (or, to a reasonable person, appear to have processes in place to do so). These are usually news organizations and the like. Wikipedia also prioritizes secondary sources over primary (the winery's website would be primary in this instance).

Welcome to Wikipedia, DisruptX. The short answer, really, is that you don't. Any article about an organization must meet our notability criteria, which in general terms means it needs coverage from a wide array of organizations that are completely unrelated to it. Press releases or anything of the sort would not qualify. Articles about organizations are made in the context of an encyclopedia, and not as a means of promoting the organization or simply documenting that it exists.
Further note that if you are closely tied to, employed by, or are related to the company in question you must disclose your conflict of interest and you are encouraged as strongly as possible to not edit or create the article directly. You would request edits to an existing page or you can draft the page and then request an editor review it to publish. If you are paid as part of your duties to edit Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you, who is requesting the edits in question (presuming there is a difference), and any other relevant role or relationship you may have. Failure to disclose paid editing is a violation of the Wikimedia Terms of Use.

I'd say that, if you can, try and group your additional questions under an existing header (created by you), since the teahouse tends to have a monstrous table of contents at any given time. If you can and are comfortable, you can also spread out your questions to different venues.
Options include the Wikipedia:Help desk (how to use/edit Wikipedia), the Wikipedia:Reference desk (general questions based on a set of topics), asking me questions here, asking on the Wikimedia Discord in channel #english-wikipedia, and finally, inquiring on the talk page of any editor you find reasonable. Ok! Thank you! But, how would I group my questions under the same header? Take this example: what if I was asking if there is a Scottish Gaelic Wikipedia and, at the time, didn’t realize I would have more questions, and named the topic Scottish Gaelic. Then, a couple of hours later, I have a question about recent changes patrol. I can’t quite group completely unrelated questions under one heading, like recent changes patrol under Scottish Gaelic. THE HISTORY OF PA OMBUTUA-OWEI EKPESE, THE FOUNDER OF AYAKOROMO COMMUNITY IN BURUTU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE, NIGERIA.*

THE MAN PA OMBUTUA-OWEI EKPESE Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese, son of Ekpese, and grand son of Pa Karebi was born in the 16th century to the family of Pa Karebi in Kiagbodo, Ngbilebiri-Mein. He was a great warrior, hunter, farmer and fisherman with high penchant for adventurous trips. A black, giant-looking six fingered and fierce man that commands authority with high intelligent quotient.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI'S MOTHER Pa Ombutua-owei mother's name is Emgbaikpo, the daughter of Pa Bena-Kerebi whose descendants are Ngoketerimo of Pa M.L. Agbegha and Tebideba of Lion Kurodoukumo Lineage in present Assesaghabiri Quarters in Ayakoromo.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI EKPESE'S FINAL MOVEMENT OUT OF KIAGBODO. Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese, being a man of valour was in search for new fishing, hunting and farming territory, left Kiagbodo and paddled out of Kiagbodo creek near Okpare Town with a wooden boat and went down to Forcados River to the first site he settled, called Egbeipou now Egbo-ideh(Egbo) in present Ughelli South Local Government Area which was uninhibited at that time. He began to farm and hunt in the daytime and kill fishes at night. He continued with these activities around the area but later found a marshy low land area more lucrative for his hunting and fishing activities. While he retained his several farms and farming activities at his former location (Egbeipou), he relocated to the low marshy plain or land susceptible to annual flooding which is at the left bank, adjacently opposite, he called Ayakoro-yo.

As a  courageous man, he setup a fishing camp and started to explore the territory to and fro with his household of three wives and two sisters for more than two decades (over 20years). This was when he pinned his tentacles of fishing in the new settlement with his three wives and two sisters namely Okofo and Anetu.
PA OMBUTUA-OWEI'S SISTERS (ANETU & OKOFO).

Anetu Ekpese even though was barren settled at Anetugbene(now called Bobougbene) on the instructions of her elder brother, Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese. The present Bobougbene was originally called Anetugbene coined after her name-Anetu. She was a very successful trader and engaged in fishing activities. Her accommodating spirit and unparalleled kindness attracted men and women from the neighborhood to dwell with her.

Okofo Ekpese, a beautiful damsel married Pa Ongolo of Gbekebor Town and gave birth to two male children namely Gbafade and Eneimienye. From history, Pa Ongolo was originally a native of Agbodobiri in Ogbolubiri kingdom.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI SECURED THE LIFE OF PERE BIGBOROGHA 1 At the end of each fishing year, Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese joins his kith and kin for the annual festival in Kiagbodo and return thereafter to his new found settlement called Ayakoro-yo.

In one of his usual annual visit, he heard of a sacrilegious crime committed by one of the sons of Pere Bigborogha 1. The authenticity of the crime was established after a panel was set up to investigate the matter. In accordance with tradition, the culprit was to be killed for the offense committed. Pere Bigborogha 1 got wind of the judgement and tried to use his good office to temper justice with mercy but to no avail. In the process, the culprit absconded to an unknown destination. There was serious crisis in the community and the situation was getting out of control. Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese was invited at this juncture to meet with other king makers to broker peace or find a Truce.

When the aggrieved party later discovered that the culprit has absconded, they collectively demanded for the life of the King in place of his son. In one of his visits to Kiagbodo, at the height of the crisis, Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese was intimated of the plan to kill the King.

Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese in his wisdom and as the 'Abosuru-Owei' of Ngbilebiri-Mein kingdom strategized ways to secure the King and his household from his adversaries. He finally succeeded in escaping with the King and his family under cover at midnight. This was in 1632AD.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN PA OMBUTUA-OWEI AND THE INVADERS FROM KIAGBODO Pa Ombutua-owei's escape with the King at that time caused unprecedented crisis in Kiagbodo between the contending groups.

There was a counter move to capture the King and his household and bring him back to Kiagbodo, for justice to prevail. In a swift response, Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese being a warrior, organized his household, taking along his three nephews including Gbafade, to face the invaders. Wearing his war regalia, he advanced with his fighters to the middle of the river in-wait for the invaders. The coalition point was at 'Ayorobenghan Ofiyou'. The battle was very fierce, and at the end of the day, the surviving first son of Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese named Kiagbodo and four other persons from the other side lost their lives. That was how the battle ended.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI BUILT CAMP FOR PERE BIGBOROGHA 1. To ensure total safety of the King and his household, a camp was built for Pere Bigborogha 1 in a creek, off Obubu creek known as 'Pere-Oba' till date. Oral history had it that the culprit who earlier absconded was fished out and handed over to the traditional authority for execution in Kiagbodo.

THE INFLUX OF PA OMBUTUA-OWEI TOWN'S MEN TO AYAKOROMO The influx of Pa Ombutua-owei town's men from Kiagbodo and other places commenced after Pere Bigborogha 1 relocation to the new settlement(Ayakoro-yo) in about 1632AD. As a result of the traditional constraints of not sighting fresh water (Pinabeni), Pere Bigborogha 1 was further shifted to a lake named 'Pere-Dunou' near the inner boundary between Ayakoromo and Ogodobiri. The successful protection of Pere Bigborogha 1 life and provision of a new abode for him, which was made possible by Pa Ombutua-owei, and the lucrative nature of the new settlement, encouraged and influenced the influx of his town's men to join him; prominent among the elders were: Pa Diamo, Pa Boukonghan, Pa Oforikpo, Pa Agbereye, Pa Youpele-owei, Pa Ekeremowei, Pa Bena-Kerebi and Karebi/Badenmo families. This made the war lord, Pa Ombutua-owei Ekpese to change the name Ayakoro-yo to Ayakoro-ama (Ayakoromo) till this day.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PA OMBUTUA-OWEI AND PA ONGOLO OF GBEKEBOR. As earlier mentioned, mama Okofo(a damsel then), daughter of Pa Ekpese got married to Pa Ongolo, who was originally from Agbodobiri. After the marriage, Pa Ongolo travelled with her to Orugbo and gained employment in Olu of Itsekiri Palace and lived there. Pa Ombutua-owei who cares and desire to know the new abode and welfare of his sister and her husband, searched for them and found them at Olu of Itsekiri Palace. He persuaded them to follow him and they complied. He then gave them the area close to where Gbedekebor is situated, to settle.

Pa Ongolo, after critically observing the fierce and adventurous nature of his brother in-law, proposed to sign a peace pack with him. The unwritten peace pack was effected and implemented. Pa Ongolo later pleaded with his in-law to move a bit farther away from the settlement he was given, to the place called Gbedekebor(now Gbekebor).

Pa Ongolo marriage to Mama Okofo was blessed with two male children namely; Gbafade and Eneimienye.

The radical behavior of the children mama Okofo had with her husband, Pa Ongolo made him to often quarrel with her. This prompted madam Okofo to move with her children to join her brother, Pa Ombutua-owei to form the three present compounds ('egede') namely; Ombutua-owei (main), Gbafade and the Eneimienye 'wororo' in Ayakoromo Town.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI EKPESE'S ENCOUNTER WITH A MISTERIOUS LEOPARD In those days, a misterious leopard usually appear from the bush and terrorize the people of Ayakoromo. This leopard operating spot was around the present area late madam Orumu's house was located in Apalepa domain of Tamukunou quarters. The several dangerous attacks on the citizens by the leopard was widely discussed by the elders and youths, but no practical step was taken to overcome it. Those who go early into the bush for their economic activities such as bush mango (ogbein) fruit collection, move in groups for fear of the leopard. The complaints of the people about the ferocious leopard reached Pa Ombutua-owei.

As a brave warrior and hunter of high repute, Pa Ombutua-owei was fully prepared in his mind to confront the rampaging beast to save his people. Although, his decision at that time did not get the approval of his children who felt he was too old and weak to fight the misterious leopard. One fateful day, Pa Ombutua-owei dressed in his war regalia disguised before his children and advanced to the spot where the beast normally comes out to operate. He used his talent as a hunter to search for the leopard around the area. He raised a popular war song to spur himself to action. One of the popular war song was: 'Abi o ena asain yo obori konowei kere yo'(2ice), followed by personal and special appellations to usher in the war spirits of the community. Suddenly, the beast appeared from behind and pounced on him, dipping it's paws into the side rips of Pa Ombutua-owei. In a swift reaction, Pa Ombutua-owei neck-locked the beast(leopard) and used his poisonous native knife on it, stabbing it severally and finally threw the beast out. Even though he succeeded in killing the leopard, the claws have inflicted fatal injuries on his ribs with internal bleeding.

PA OMBUTUA-OWEI'S DEATH Pa Ombutua-owei died after some years, principally attributed to old age and the fatal wounds he sustained during his encounter with the leopard.

At the time of his death, Pa Ombutua-owei had nine(9) wives (zitus) and very many children to his credit.

Pa Ombutua-owei by all standard was a great warrior, hunter, farmer, fisherman and Community leader of high repute. He is a hero and saviour of the people of Ayakoromo Community in Ngbilebiri-Mein kingdom.

HISTORICAL SOURCES: 1. This historical text was handed down by Pa Ombutua-owei to Pa Akorun, Pa Akorun inturn handed it over to Pa Arekumo, Pa Arekumo to Pa Daubriyaibo Daubo, Pa Daubriyaibo Daubo to Pa Agu Arekumo, Pa Agu Arekumo to Pa Orubagor Daubriyaibo, Pa Orubagor Daubriyaibo to Pa Okeren, Pa Okeren to Pa Agbogidi, Pa Agbogidi to Mr. Sylvester A. Igwe on one hand and the narration of fourteen(14) prominent elders of Kiagbodo led by Pa Clark Fuludu Bekeddremo on 15th May, 1967.

2. This oral historical narration which dated back to 1675 AD was extracted from a compendium of Ngbilebiri history in the archives as recorded by Professor E. J. Alagoa in his book titled, "The History of the Niger Delta", page 63.

3. The Constitution of Ayakoromo, as written by Late Chief Thomas Omete Onduku in 1965 as amended in 1969, 1985 and 1995 respectively.

I have an acceptable amount of experience with the functional aspect of Wikipedia thanks to working on wikis using the same program, but little experience with Wikipedia's norms and traditions. And so, I have a couple questions. Would you recommend against me joining a WikiProject immediately after joining Wikipedia? If I do want to join a WikiProject, should I ask a member first or just add myself to their list of contributors? Welcome to Wikipedia, ButterscotchPuffin! WikiProject's aren't really anything formal; they are just a group of editors that organize together because they are interested in editing or supporting a particular topic on Wikipedia. I cannot think of any such projects off the top of my head that require any formality to joining, so unless their home page (an example of a home page is Wikipedia:WikiProject Film, though they have no requirements to "join" them) says otherwise, you can just add yourself to the list of contributors and/or add the userbox to your user page. I also can't think of any reason as to why it would be an issue to do so due to your inexperience. If anything it may give you a group of editors to learn with.
In regards to your user page, specific guidelines are listed at Wikipedia:User page. Editors tend to have great latitude with what they can do with their own user space so long as it does not violate any of what Wikipedia is not. A common error I see from newer editors is using it as a webhost to hold information that is clearly meant for off-wiki purposes. Let me know if you have any specific questions regarding your userspace after perusing the above resources.

Welcome to Wikipedia, Squeak41, and I apologize for my late reply. The edit filter is a community maintained set of regular expression filters that either blocks or logs for review edits which meet certain criteria, usually to stop edits which are unambiguously disruptive (e.g one filter is set to block attempts to add the phrase "yo mama" to articles) or which meet patterns that are consistent with long term abusers.
As far as I'm aware, the filter being triggered - especially if no action was taken - is not inherently a bad thing. I'm not much more knowledgable with filters aside from what I've said above, so I don't know if I can access your triggering of the relevant filter specifically. I'd say you are good to just continue editing as normal, presuming it remains policy compliant. If you are concerned and desire an authoritative answer, I'd suggest messaging an edit filter helper or manager. Welcome to Wikiepdia, HelenWiseman. I'm sorry that an article you are trying to create was recently declined, I understand that can be frustrating. Taking a glance at some of the sources in the article, I believe the complaint that your reviewer has is that the articles discuss the research created by Sara Mahdavi but they don't discuss her in particular. We generally want to see publications focus on the subject specifically rather than a work they are related to or have created. Looking at our guidelines specific to academics (which a scientist would fall under in this case), I don't immediately think she qualifies for any of those items either.
I'd suggest asking your reviewer directly to get more insight into how they came to their decision. You can do so by posting here: User talk:WikiOriginal-9. —Sirdog (talk) 03:28, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm glad to hear of your success, HelenWiseman. In terms of suggestions... Any page on Wikipedia can be deleted at any time either by community discussion or through one of our criteria for on-sight deletion. There isn't a process that unilaterally protects a page from deletion. Considering the original reason for your page's deletion, I would advise looking over our policy that describes what Wikipedia is not and reviewing our neutral point of view policy. If you write an article with those 2 things in mind, you are far less likely to have a draft deleted.
The hurtle after that will be demonstrating with reliable sources that your topic is notable enough to warrant an article. Presuming you are going to retry creating the same article which got deleted, my links to the notability of academics further up this page will be helpful. —Sirdog (talk) 13:39, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

  • Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

Election news: The Guild needs coordinators! If you'd like to help out, you may nominate yourself or any suitable editor—with their permission—for the Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2024. Nominations will close at 23:59 on 15 December (UTC). Voting begins immediately after the close of nominations and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under current sanctions) are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on 30 June.

Drive: Of the 69 editors who signed up for the September Backlog Elimination Drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 661,214 words in 290 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.

Blitz: Of the 22 editors who signed up for the October Copy Editing Blitz, 13 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 109,327 words in 52 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.

Drive: During the November Backlog Elimination Drive, 38 of the 58 editors who signed up copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 458,620 words in 234 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.
