The page I edited was deleted...[edit]

Hi Skier Dude, hope you are well. I'm hoping you can help me. There is page on wiki which features the artist Tamee Harrison. A lot of information is either missing or incorrect, so I edited it and saved it. It appeared as the new version and now today, the old version is back up and my new improved version is gone. Can you please help me so that the old version can be exchanged with the new improved page? Thanks so much in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tamee123 (talkcontribs) 22:53, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit on the article Tamee Harrison was reverted from your edits by Ponyo who noted in his wp:edit summary that your changes lacked reliable sources, were promotional in nature, and did not maintain a Neutral point of view. You can follow the links to see what he is referring. Skier Dude (talk) 02:55, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am surprised you saw fit to reduce this, which was certainly not of reproduction quality even when it was just newsprint. Do you use some kind of criteria, or does a bot point you to these illustrations? Whatever, it still looks OK in the encyclopedia, I am just wondering about your rationale for doing what you did. Sincerely, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:19, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The original upload was 746×1,280 px (281,053 bytes) - fair use calls for about 400x400 (or relative proportions for other HxW aspect ratio/s) The bot takes care of the reduction - image is now at 305×523 pix (64,512 bytes). Not only does this now comply with fair use requirements, it cuts down on the # of bytes that need to be served up! Skier Dude (talk) 02:47, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks! Glad we have somebody to take care of these necessary chores! Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 02:54, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Skier Dude, I saw that you tagged this image with a CSD tag. One of the authors contacted me to let me know that this is the first instance of publication for this image on the internet, and that they have used the CC BY-SA license tag correctly. Can you let me know if there are still issues with this image? If yes, how can the authors help resolve them. Thank you. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 12:37, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Given the information on the file description page, the copyright holder (Neth Pheaktra and Keo Kounila) will need to prove that the image has actually been released as noted through the WP:OTRS system. You'll note that the uploader claimed to be the (c) holder ("I, the copyright holder") - but credits the work to others. Skier Dude (talk) 02:33, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the response, Skier Dude. The account User:Anilakeo belongs to Kounila Keo. Even if Pheaktra and Kounila send separate emails to the OTRS team confirming authorship and provide permission to use the image on the Wikimedia Commons with a CC BY-SA license, do we have the capability to verify whether the emails originated from them? Like I said before, this is the first instance of publication on the internet, and we have no other way of verifying authorship except by taking the word of the uploader in good faith. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 05:10, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I understand it, OTRS checks the source of e-mails, and if necessary will make additional contacts. Since the uploader mis-tagged the image (claimed 'self' as uploader) and credited the image to others, the only way to keep it is for the owners to confirm ownership. You can contact someone at WP:OTRS if you need additional information (I don't have access to their internal processes). Skier Dude (talk) 05:13, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A warrior who fought Custer[edit]

Don't particularly have an axe to grind about this but just wanted to point out that the deletion has lost the record of the original uploader. This is especially confusing given that the source is given as "scanned myself from copy of book..." and now looks like it was Dashbot that did the scanning. SpinningSpark 19:00, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The essential info is still in the edit history. There is a bot that runs once in a while that will put a list of prior versions on the file page. It's also available to admins in the deletion history if there's ever an issue regarding the source. Skier Dude (talk) 05:29, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comic strips[edit]

Many of the reductions on comic strips are making them impossible to read. Pepso2 (talk) 10:09, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is true. Comic strips by their nature are a marriage of words and pictures, and with the old-fashioned full-page Sunday strips especially, reducing them to 400px makes them unreadable. This renders them useless in terms of encyclopedic or research value; there can't be "fair use" without use.
Wikipedia has thoughtfully evolved to an understanding that there is no one-size-fits-all approach; certainly, there is no hard-and-fast rule, either here or in general-world copyright realms, that dictates 400px as a maximum size for all things always. These strips, if saved at the lowest Photoshop resolution before being uploaded at around 650px, would be far too low=res for the images to "hold" if blown up. With the lowest resolution at 650px, it would be just as impractical to copy as a higher resolution at 400px.
That very small difference would allow this representative handful of examples of a 20th century popular-art form to be shown as select examples, critical to an understanding of any given strip. I ask that these considerations be factored in to allow reasonable flexibility in a way that still constitutes fair use. With regards, --Tenebrae (talk) 12:58, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are both proposing a standard exemption from the fair-use policies. I agree that newspapers & similar print items should have a level of exemption to this. Given that this is a request for a change to the policy - something like adding a "fair-use-size-exempt' tag/policy - this would definitely need to be brought up in some forum, but I'm not sure where this would be discussed. Skier Dude (talk) 03:01, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Skier Dude. Thank you for your thoughtful reply — I appreciate your graciousness and your effort to achieve something workable. I'm not really thinking of exempting anything from fair use — only to suggest that if an image is saved at very low-res, then that might balance out a slightly larger pixel size since the image still could not be enlarged to full size without breaking up ... thus keeping within the bounds of fair use. Any ideas where we could take up that aspect?
Again, I, and I'm sure my fellow editor Pepso2, appreciate very much that you understand the issue and see the reasoning for it. Looking forward to any thoughts on where to go to fully discuss this idea. With much regard, --Tenebrae (talk) 04:14, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

looking for document management solutions[edit]

Please explain why you feel the way you do about the DocuWare page. I looked at their website and it seems pretty straight forward. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Floyd2Carolina (talkcontribs) 14:17, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what you're talking about, I've never seen/edited the page or its images. Skier Dude (talk) 03:03, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FurMe makes messes[edit]

Hi there. I just wanted to let you know that as I was doing some manual resizings I noticed that you're still using FurMe to tag files for resizing. FurMe likes to rearrange level two headers, create redundant level two headers, and occasionally do even weirder things. Please consider using Twinkle for this function instead. Go to the TW tab, then select "Tag" (should be fifth down in the drop down), and {{Non-free reduce}} should be the second option from the top. Just typing in {{reduce}} is also an option.

I know it's more work, but it saves other people the work of having to clean up after FurMe.

Thank you for your consideration, Sven Manguard Wha? 09:18, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image size reduction[edit]

Hi there. You recently tagged a file with {{non-free reduce}} or {{reduce}} that was, in fact, within acceptable size for fair use images. Standard practice places the maximum size at 160,000 pixels, which is 400x400 in a square image. However, 500x320, 600x266, etc. are also 160,000 pixels, and are acceptable. DASHbot, the program that does almost all image resizing, actually won't even bother with files that come out to less than 160,000 pixels, so chances are low that the files will ever be reduced anyways. If you really want a file smaller than 160,000 pixels reduced, you can do it easily with the free program Paint.NET (what I use), or ask me directly.

Just letting you know for the future, Sven Manguard Wha? 13:49, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, it's stopped; having a problem with using a too old database scrape; am going to have to find another way to do this. Skier Dude (talk) 04:25, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently OTRS or an admin (or you) must have taken care of it as the photo is now "live" at long last. Thanks for your patience and help. Please ignore me if this idea is inappropriate: But I have NEVER asked for something like this before on Wikipedia, and I don't know if it is kosher to ask, but given that I worked on this for nearly 14 months on this one image alone, trying to get it cleared, got the publisher to write three time to OTRS with a proper permission form (and the image was cleared briefly last July then deleted again), is it appropriate to award a barnstar of some sort for perseverence in the face of adversity or such? If not appropriate to ask, please delete this section and I will understand AustexTalk 19:16, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use image nomination for deletion[edit]

Hello Skier Dude, I saw you nominated File:Nelly - Brass Knuckles.jpg for deletion as orphaned, I added it to the album article, replacing File:Brassknucklesalbumcover.jpg, which is of significantly higher resolution, and was missing all sorts of copyright information, and have since nominated the larger file for deletion, assuming a lower resolution FU file is better here. Cheers. --kelapstick(bainuu) 02:13, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MLOwen.jpg[edit]

re your deletion of this file. I think I have belatedly found the appropriate tag for a photo taken in 1916 as publicity shot viz: PD-EU-no-author-disclosure. Is this right and can you re over the file ? Almanacer (talk) 11:02, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you mark File:ECDlogo.svg for deletion? It’s prominently featured on the Enhanced CD page and is the true official trademarked logo of such media. Peace. —MuzikJunky (talk) 04:49, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looking to reactivate a deleted page with updated A7 and relevant BIO information[edit]

Hello Skier Dude,

I'm looking to reactivate a page and add relevant content to a page that was deleted in 2008 for Richard_D_Stuart based upon significant changes and community service that has been provided by Mr. Stuart as he continues to serve the needs of struggling teens across America with Girls, Inc., the North Star Foundation, Outward Bound, Impact One, YLCC, and the ARC.

I thank you in advance for your consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.198.204.87 (talk) 01:40, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The page was only one line - recreating a legitimate article would be the way to go here, the old revision is not blocked from recreation. Skier Dude (talk) 00:17, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Arnold John Flass[edit]

Arnold John Flass should be moved to Arnold Flass. Why the middle name in the article title?--98.244.158.25 (talk) 05:43, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because the full name is given in the first sentence? If you think it should be moved, add {{Requested move}} to the talk page and follow the instructions that follow from that. Skier Dude (talk) 05:55, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
