Sysop

Congratulations! You are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the administrators' how-to guide helpful. Good luck. Angela. 02:02, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

IRC

Well the most used client seems to be mIRC, look at the bottom of the article for a place to download it from. If you get it you can also grab a script so you can click bracketed links. I myself use IceChat which is a bit better, but there's no script for it, so you'd have to type bracketed stuff yourself. Pick either one, and look at WP:IRC for extra help. Hi, PRueda. Thanks for your vote of support on my nomination to become an administrator. I passed, and my floor rag has since been bestowed upon me. Please let me know if you need me to help with anything in particular! —BrianSmithson 16:14, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I personally don't think it's fair to block without a warning, and the last warning before his vandalism was 5 days old. I won't remove your block, and I don't have a problem with it, just not what I would have done. Congrats on adminship btw. -Greg Asche (talk) 01:58, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Health of Mice

is it possible that you can create a page that can be added to by anyone? I want it to be set up like a forum. The subject is mice health questions and answers. I want the opening to be like this.

This page is here so that you can ask and answer questions on the health of mice.

When this is done can you email me? mb103749@gmail.com

My wikipedia account is. 103749

Wikipedia problems

It seems that you're not the only one with the problems, so I would suspect that there might be a bug with the MediaWiki software (this is a guess, for I never ran into this error until now, and only with Firefox).

The Pan Am article had run into problems with vandalism (to the point where someone apparently placed a vprotect tag on it), though there were some positive edits (especially by one who actually knew people who were killed on Pan Am 103).

By the way, congratulations with your adminship. Though someone asked whether I would be interested in adminship, at the moment I am just happy to get some of my articles to FA (currently it is the University of Michigan, which has few comments so far). Pentawing 03:10, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

I've nominated articles for TFA before they were Featured before, and nobody complained. I want to get it in for December 5th, and it'll be featured by then. Please note that the request is on a discussion page; you can probably object to the article with the rationale of "not yet featured", but I don't see the harm in nominating it—if it doesn't become featured, then it can't be on the main page. But it will be featured then. If Raul654 objects, I'll be fine with leaving out the nomination until it is featured, though he hasn't objected in the past. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-20 23:18

Wikibreak

Copied from hydnjo talk (just to add context):
Hey, I'm going to be taking a wikibreak since there are a lot of stressful things going on in my life, and wanted to know if you could take care of adding the {{mainpage date to come|Date}} templates on new chosen articles while I'm gone. Thanks! -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 23:56, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh and, not to be a bother, but can you keep an eye on my watchlist, too... it's listed on my userpage. Thanks! -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 23:56, 20 November 2005 (UTC) 23:57, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Hey, I just took a peek at your stress-meters, no problem - go away - and don't worry, I'll look after the featured articles. Even if I miss "...to come" I'll not miss "FA date", I promise. My own watchlist has about 200 entries so adding your's will be no big deal. Just to make sure I have them all, put them in a list on my talk page otherwise I'll assume that they are the articles listed on your user page. Please take a break without worrying about the the Wikitasks that you have been tending. I'm sure I'll know when you're back so best wishes resolving your personal stuff and thanks for asking. ;-) Heidi and Joe, --hydnjo talk 01:31, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
That's all of them, the only ones that aren't listed are the school articles attached to M-DCPS, since there are too many to place on there. All I need is someone to watch and make sure the articles aren't vandalized, many of them are watched by several users so those are covered, but there are some (like most of the M-DCPS articles) that are probably watched only by me. My process for adding the templates to the new chosen articles is to go to Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 24, 2005, and add it to my watchlist, then when Raul654 places the next article on there, I add the template and go to the archive, then do the same for every article chosen and when he's done adding, I unwatch the now filled in date and watch the next empty date. Thanks again for helping me, I just have too many things going on to have to watch for vandalism and get into edit wars, LOL. -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 01:47, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Like I said - go away. We all need a break now and again, you know, stuff happens. I'll look after things so don't worry. Of course the way WP has been behaving lately it's a wonder that anyone can get anything done around here (kidding ... just kidding)  ;-) --hydnjo talk 01:56, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I'm sorry if I made it seem as if I am watching over your shoulder, but I'm not. I came here to research a topic for a school essay and I had a new message and thought it was you asking a question, but was unaware it was a list you were making, so I answered it. I tried to keep my edits down to a minimum, but since I am still addicted to this place, I can't help it. Also, starting Saturday there will be no way for me to edit anymore because I will no longer have internet at home (I'm moving, so it's being cut off). On top of moving, I have school exams coming up, and three other huge problems all tied together which involves a legal procedure (court case) in which I am a witness and all that has been stressing me out lately (exams, plus moving, plus problems and court case). I decided to leave Wiki for a while because I found myself stressed out over edit wars, and vandalism when I didn't need that stress right now (normally i wouldn't mind, it's part of editing), and since the court dates and exams all coincide with the first week of December, I decided to put December 10 (which should be a date when everything has returned back to normal) as my return date. Since I still have internet, I do come around Wiki sometimes just to watch, or as i mentioned, to read an article but that won't be occuring anymore as of Saturday because it'll be nearly impossible to come on at all. Wiki used to take up about 85% of my internet time, now it's down to 5% and that's just cause my addiction to this place has me coming back for more! LOL. As you can see, I've kept my edits to a minimum for the past two days and after this, I'll be stopping completely because tomorrow I have errands to run for my moving, saturday I'm moving, and I won't have any internet until December 1 at the least. Then, i'll have exams and the court proceedings, and once all that's past, I'll be able to come back. I apologize again for sounding like I was watching over you, and I trust your judgement in editing and dealing with vandals since you are a more experienced user than I, but I just thought you had a question for me and didn't realize it was a list you were making for once I returned. I hope you aren't upset with me, and I am glad you are willing to help. Thanks. -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 02:03, 25 November 2005 (UTC) P.S.- I might make one or two edits if they're necessary tonight, but after that I', definately gone (since I have no choice). Thanks again!

I can't believe you wrote all that - I didn't even read it before making this post. I just saw the sea of keystrokes and decided to come here instead. I'll read it tomorrow. Please let me know if you're on vacation or not. I'd like to help out but I have my own watchlist to watch. If you really need my help well then I'll be glad to help. Hey, PRueda29 are you hearin' what I'm sayin'? hydnjo talk 02:31, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Hey, welcome back. I've been feeling paranoid that I'd miss something bad on your watchlist and get yelled at! Nah, just kidding as I was when I said "... why am I bothering ...". I said that to help you get your butt out of here and do whatever. Glad to have been of service and don't hesitate if you need help with anything. BTW, unless I was really asleep here, things were pretty quiet. One or two that someone else had already jumped on ... Hey! did you have someone else ... Oh, nevermind.  ;-) --hydnjo talk 23:40, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Es un buen idea, pero "Viaje de las Estrellas" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "Star Trek". Un problema you probably noticed, mi nivel de hablar español es lo que usan en el barrio. Se matan la lenguage, por eso es "Spanglish". Pero podemos buscar (maňana) al wiki. Cual es tu favorito "viaje"? copyvios

In any article, the first version should not be a copyvio 'coz the history would show it to be a copyvio. In WP:CV also, the instruction is to revert to the last non-copyvio version; if all are tainted, it is to be listed and then deleted. Please see Wikipedia:Association of Copyright Violation Hunting Wikipedians for an associated discussion. --Gurubrahma 09:00, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

You can have the non-copyvio material on the temporary subpage link which can be found on the copyvio notice (huge red link). Once the copyvio article and history is deleted, the noncopyvio material that you have re-written on the temporary page would be placed on the article page. As of now, there is a backlog on copyvio clearing and it may take upto 20 days for its clearing and deletion. You may want to work on the sub-page in the meanwhile. btw, of all the things floating around, the most dangerous to Wikipedia's survival is copyvios. Hence, if you find a copyvio in future, please see to it that you tag it appropriately as well as inform the original contributor. I have already done so in this case. --Gurubrahma 09:10, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

I don't know if you read the Wikipedia Signpost recently (or seen something on the administrators' board), but there is a new feature that allows articles to be "partially protected," where only registered users can edit an article. Anonymous IP users are blocked from editing such articles. The reason why I mentioned this is that the Columbine High School massacre article has suffered repeated vandalism (whether misguided or intentional) from anons. Hence, if you wish you could reduce the constant reverting necessary by implementing this feature on the article. Let me know what you think about it (I read that the feature has been implemented on frequently edited articles such as George W. Bush and John Kerry). Pentawing 19:24, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

  • From what I read of the feature's description, IP users and new registered users whose accounts are <= four days are blocked from editing. Once the four days have passed, the new registered user can then be able to edit the article. Pentawing 23:51, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
    • One reason I can think of for the "semi-protection" is that the article, which focuses on a major event that involved various controversial issues, has been subjected to numerous acts of vandalism, primarily by anonymous IP users. I also think placing a notice on the talk page would help to explain the situation in more detail. Pentawing 07:03, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

WP: SPOKEN: Columbine_High_School_massacre

Hey there!

Was hanging around and noticed that you were looking for a reader for Columbine_High_School_massacre. I've scanned the article and I think I can manage it.

  • But first, I'd like to get some feedback on my production. I'd hate to record such a long article and have it suffer because of technical problems.
  • Also, this looks to be a relatively long article. Do you think it's a good candidate for subdivision (in terms of the OGG files; not the article itself)?

Get back to me and I'll toss it on my list if you still need a volunteer. Ckamaeleon 08:21, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I work in Audacity. Do you want me to send you the downmixed OGG files? To clarify, this is for feedback, right? I already know how to upload files (I think-- though I can't find a way to write a tag to the OGG files, I am labelling them as I submit them).

If you want a sense of my voice and production quality, check out and/or .

As you can hear, there is sort of a weird reverb-y thing going on. Not sure what's causing it. I hate it. I wonder if it's one of the cleanup tools. I run decompression normalize (It automatically goes to -3dB, if I remember right. No way to change it, as I know), and I normalise compress it to about -13dB. Then I run noise reduction (usually at or near the lowest level). Is there a preferred order to do these steps in, btw?

I also have my mic gain boosted at the soundcard level. Maybe that's causing the problem?

UPDATE: Did some testing. The problem seems to be a combo of these:
  • I had my speakers on during recording. They were feeding back into the mic.
  • My mic vol. was in the red. Fixed it.
  • My comp is positioned in a bare corner. Reverb from the room. Added foam padding to damper a bit. Ckamaeleon 11:41, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

But overall, I'm just happy to be recording. When I started this morning, I couldn't even get Audacity to recognize the mic input (a GNOME/Linux thing, I discovered). It's too bad recording takes so long to do. Ckamaeleon 08:43, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, you sound a bit nervous at the beginning, but you ease into it real well, I notice this by the fact that your sh and ch sounds (including endings like -tion, that sound like sh/ch) tend to run together with the vowels in the beginning, that's usually what people do when they're tense or nervous, but it's not a bad thing since I hear that all the time on spoken article recordings.
  • Remember that this is only my second recording. I think it's hard to walk a line between speaking naturally and not speaking too quickly. It seems like I forgot about pacing when I got into it--but traded off with a more natural sound.

I had linux for a while, first knoppix, of course... I finally gave up and gave in to Windows... oh well.

  • If you ever want to go back, there is a handy site that helps you choose a distro. I don't know what your technical background is like. I consider myself a "power user" in Windows. I installed Ubuntu_linux (one of the "easier" distros) and let me tell you, I'm still stumbling around. I'm drawing on old programming knowledge, Mac savvy, all sorts of stuff to figure it out. But it's not impossible. Just time-consuming to do things that "just work" in Win or even Knoppix.

Also, now I have LILO stuck on my boot sector...Any idea on how i can get rido of f-ing LILO? Sorry to get off topic.

  • There IS an easy way. Working from my failing memory, you need a Win startup disk. You should boot to it and choose "Restore(Repair?) Master Boot Record" That should wipe Lilo off and replace it with Win boot code. If you've tried this to no avail, I'm sorry. I use GRUB. I tried LILO and it did horrible things. So I just reinstalled GRUB over it. The whole partitioning and install process was painless but I can't help but cringe wondering if I didn't secretly mess something up. LILO should reside in your MBR, so you might try Googling it for more details. Have you read this? (I have to chuckle at how Microsoft is so eager to help you rid yourself of LILO). Sorry that's not a whole lot of help.

Yeah, I'm about to head to bed, too. Should have been there 3 hours ago.Ckamaeleon 09:25, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

So not having the "official" licensed copy of XP is biting you in the butt, huh? That's one reason I got interested in Linux--don't have to worry about M$'s approval to use the software. Again, sorry I don't have a solution for you. Ckamaeleon 22:07, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
P.S. -- Thought you might be curious *grin* you'll find a handy progress meter on my talk page, just under the section heading. It's based on the TOC, but I was too lazy to try to figure out how to make the box only "x"width. I will eventually. Basically, anything struck out is recorded.... I am out of town for the weekend...but I happen to have some pro recording equipment here where I'm staying, so I may be able to re-record the whole thing... we'll see. I also need to read over the discussion on the article that I've started. In some ways, this was a bad article to read b/c it's still being heavily revised. But I know you've got an interest in it, since you've been putting so much work into it--and I agree that it's definately important enough to record.Ckamaeleon 22:12, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
re: heavy editing....Looking at the history again, you're right. Ckamaeleon 09:25, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm NOT planning on reading the "notes" section, mostly because it's hard to verbally correlate them to the parts of the text that they reference. And they don't make a whole lot of sense structurally without the sentences they reference to provide context. Also, it's a long section.

I do plan to read the references and external links, including the web addresses. Oh, I'm also going to read the infoboxes at the END of their section as "Infobox: Title". I agree with the commentator who said that they help keep track of the people in the paragraphs. Thoughts [about the Notes section]? Ckamaeleon 11:37, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

WP: SPOKEN: Columbine_High_School_massacre II

So I'm reading along (borrowing a NICE condenser mic for the weekend--hurray!) and It turns out there are about 6-10 student names that could be pronounced at least two different ways. Do you know where I might find definitive name pronunciations for the victims? I can give you a list, if you like. I mean, nobody likes it when you mess up their name, and we want Wikipedia to be an authority on this sort of thing, right? Ckamaeleon 09:08, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Excellent. Click here and scroll down a wee bit for the list. P.S.-- check the progress chart. Things will slow down this week b/c of class, but so far, so good. Ckamaeleon 11:09, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
I've just replied on the thread in my talk page. Ckamaeleon 22:14, 23 January 2006 (UTC) P.S. --green talk page is a nice change.
Right. At the moment, it's just over 97 minutes long. But a lot of that is crap that will get cut out... like me repeating things like "on a grassy knoll to their left (next to the West Entrance of the school) eating lunch" until it sounds right. I don't know exactly how much of that will be removed, but it's safe to say it'll be about an hour, if not longer. BTW, the "feel" is close to a book-on-tape. It gets kind of intense at points. But I didn't want to read it deadpan all the way through. The idea is that it was a dramatic event.Ckamaeleon 13:16, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

No prob. Thanks for keeping me in touch w/ the changes, since I'm reading from a printout for this article (to help me mark up the pronunciation) and I won't see changes on the page.Ckamaeleon 17:39, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Copied from Tvaughn05's Talk Page
Hello Tvaughn05, just wanted to let you know that when you list a vandal on the WP:AIV page, you have to post it at the bottom of the page. You accidentally replaced the example that was under hidden text, which is just there so users know the format, thus, the vandal you reported didn't get listed. I noticed this and have blocked the vandal, so no harm done; this is only a friendly notice for the future. Also, when signing you name, please use four ~~~~, so that a timestamp comes out. This way, administrators can know what time you placed your warning to the vandal compared to his or her last vandalism (so we know if he or she has stopped vandalising). There is a way to add a customized signature so that it comes out when using the four tildes. simply go to "my preferences" and under nickname, enter all the special wiki markup you want to make the signature come out, then press save. Doing this will allow your username, and any other special feature you'd like to add to your sig come out when using the tildes. If you have already done this, then enter four tildes, instead of three so that the timestamp comes out next it. Thanks for reporting the vandal. -- PRueda29 / Ptalk29 / Pcontribs29 19:09, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I apologize, I clicked the add button that was in the instructions. I listed another vandal in the same way!! I'm sorry! Thanks for the tip on the signautre, I just missed a tilde =). I appreciate you letting me know this! Ø tVaughn05 talkcontribs 19:12, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Message to Thor: Re - Columbine

Thanks PRueda29, However, the reason I took the article on is that the list on the WP:WSW page still states under active participants, that the person who was working on it has gone, and that anyone is free to take up the article. If that could be corrected, I would be greatful, as it mislead me into thinking it still needed working on. Thor Malmjursson 14:36, 27 January 2006 (UTC) Talk to Thor

Thanks for uploading Image:MichaelKropHighSchool.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Longhair 02:34, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Re Krop School Newspaper

Leave a one or two line stub to the Krop school article and redirect, not worthy of AFD as that is probaly going to be the result. Thanks --Jaranda wat's sup 01:39, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the mixup with the tag. I thought by his comment that he had put it on there. I did wonder whether you thought this was the truth or if you added the tag because of what he said. If it's your opinion, could you please provide specific examples of extensive problems? Of course, my "correct it if you see it rather than add the tag" opinion still applies, but I wanted to know because frankly I really do not see any problem with the article.--naryathegreat | (talk) 02:46, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

"Wikipedia is not an encyclopædia in wiki"

Hello there. What I added was neither a commercial link nor a link to pages I've made. Therefore, your suggestion makes no sense whatsoever, and this prompts me to suggest for you to keep at least one if not two eyes open before letting anything escape your mouth. Also, I see you eliminated even the piece from the text referring to the mere existence of the game in question. This is rather dumb, given that the game differs in no way at all with the article's other inspired works of art. Therefore, the only explanation I can think of is that a video game is, somehow, beneath your personal quality bar by design. If so, this is a horrible defect of ignorance in your very essence, and we Wikipedians definitely do NOT need you or your vile vehicles for arbitrary censorship. Thanks. I'll have you know that I *will* add mention of the game again onto the article section, because there is not reason not to — however I will do my best to make it fit. I assume you won't terrorize me again? - 194.89.3.113 21:11, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

There's a policy in Wikipedia to assume good faith and not take a hostile attitude towards people. The message on your talk page is a template that is preset by Wikipedia, I didn't write it. Secondly, I have played the RPG before, and it's not "below my quality bar", either way, the articles aren't here as a form of promotion towards any website, whether you made it or not. At the moment I rolled back your edit, I felt that the link was a form of promotion, but then again I am human and make mistakes; a simple and courteous explanation from you on why it's not would've been enough for me to consider it otherwise. As for the text, I rolledback your addition of the link which automatically removes all previous, sequential edits by that user. If I were wanting to be hostile and "terrorize" you, I'd have taken more drastic measures, but I would never do such a thing, and I feel there's really no need for you to be hostile towards me. You are not a vandal, and if I had thought u were, I'd have added a vandalism template rather than a commercial links template. Either way, go ahead and add back the description of the game (perhaps a larger one). As for the link, it would be alright to add it as an in-article link (with no description). If you disagree, you are welcome to continue to discuss the topic with me. Thank You. -- PRueda29 / Ptalk29 / Pcontribs29 21:46, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Hello again, and thanks for the civil reply. It was definitely what I needed, as we're on pretty much the same wavelength. I indeed intend to expand the mention of the game without the unnecessary linking. I apologize for my earlier reply's sardonic tone, I guess it needs to be chalked up to wikistress. - 194.89.3.113 21:56, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
