Welcome, welcome, welcome. Since you started by editing a page of the English Wikipedia about plants I am the one who is here to welcome you to Wikipedia editing. Do as much or as little as you like, you're off to a great start from what I saw on Pyrola minor. If you would like any advice or pointers do stop by my talk page or the Wikipedia talk:PLANTS page for discussions about the plants project. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 22:28, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions[edit]

There are some advantages to Wikipedia to put citations in a WP:Template. It means that the information is more easily read by the bots that help maintain Wikipedia pages. So, for example, the book that you are currently adding information from would be formatted with the Template:cite book as (in text editing) <ref name="Piirainen">{{cite book |last1=Piirainen |first1=Mikko |last2=Piirainen |first2=Pirkko |last3=Vainio |first3=Hannele |title=Kotimaan luonnonkasvit |trans-title=Native wild plants |date=1999 |isbn=951-0-23001-4 |page=18 |language=fi |location=Porvoo, Finland |publisher=WSOY}}</ref>

This is not required, but it is helpful. I hope you don't mind, but I've gone through your recent edits and changed them to the book citation template. I see many of your edits in my recent changes feed since I watch many pages about plants that grow in the Southern Rocky Mountains.

The other thing is since you are adding information from a Finnish book it may be about traditional uses in Finland, specifically. If that is the case I think it is helpful to be specific since traditions of plant uses will be different for different cultures. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 16:14, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the suggestions, feedback and help, I appreciate it! I will see in my next edits if I can figure out how to use that template thing since it is helpful for the bots. I don't mind at all that you go through my edits, it's always good to have multiple eyes on a text to make it more accurate. :)
I was wondering about this; the book does not specify about the traditions being Finnish, but then again all the information about locations the plants grow in and what not is Finland specific. Do you think I should make them Finland/Finnish specific traditions based on that? The book's name literally translates to "Home land's wild plants" Thank for your help! Templates are a little awkward when using the visual text editor, at least for foreign language books. I find that I need to add additional parameters not available in the cite book template graphical interface (RefToolbar). Like "|trans-title=". This is also a problem with books with multiple volumes. I mostly directly edit using the text based source editing because I'm old(ish) and used to working with text editing. If it does not work for you, don't worry about it too much. Someone will eventually change it to the cite book template in time. Wikipedia is a long term project, no deadlines.
I do think that a book written in Finnish would be mostly about Finnish traditional uses unless the text specified that it is about a practice that is also carried out in other counties. I'd make the same assumption with an English language book written by someone in England. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 20:28, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just pasted the template string to a notes app, changed the page number and then copy+pasted straight to the visual editor and it worked like a charm! So I will use that from now on.
And alright, I agree, so I will go around making edits for the uses to be Finnish/Finland-based. Thanks again and feel free to drop any more suggestions/feedback if you have them. :) Sniiiif (talk) 20:38, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
