Information icon Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Common outcomes does not have an edit summary. Your edit summary usage is about 50%, trying to always leave at least a short edit summary is a good practice.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! Godsy(TALKCONT) 07:09, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Pied Piper (TV series)

The jungle book

I know a lot about the jungle book and that the author, Rudyard Kipling, decribes Baloo the bear as the sleepy brown bear . Since he said that, he must be a Himalayan brown bear since there are no other brown bears in India except for that bear. There is no such thing as a brown sloth bear. There are only one incarnation of Baloo being a sloth bear was the disney's incarnation. The firs cartoon incarnation of Baloo was him shown as a brown bear. Thecoolkidboyy (talk) 03:42, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

But in the 2016 movie, Bagheera calls him a sloth bear. I'm sorry, but it doesn't make sense for him to be a himalayan brown bear when he's called otherwise. Also, as stated on Baloo's article, nobody knows exactly what species he is in the books. He has the characteristics of different species, which is why I propose we keep his species simply as bear on The Jungle Book article, anything more would be original research. Sro23 (talk) 03:52, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
As was stated, calling him a "Himalayan brown bear" is original research considering that term has never been used in the Jungle Book novels or movies. Originial research is not allowed on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research. Baloo is named as a Sloth bear in the movie itself. 2601:601:600:4E4C:F1D8:949:21A7:6205 (talk) 14:35, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Agree with what the anonymous editor has to say. I get that he's a brown looking bear, but if the movie specifically names him as a sloth bear, then that's what he is. It doesn't matter how much of an expert on bears you are, that's what the movie says he is, so we can't change it. Please stop what you're doing and let it go. This whole species debate is ridiculous and definitely not worth getting blocked over.
Anyway, here's my two cents on the matter: Himalayan brown bears only occur in northern India, but the Jungle Book takes place in central India, correct? It's very likely Kipling created Baloo not based on one species, but rather a combination of several species. He may very well be an imaginary species of bear in the original books. But in the 2016 movie, his species is outright stated to be a sloth bear.Sro23 (talk) 21:35, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

I am the President of the Teach Peace Foundation. We have never tried to spam Wiki but have provided corrections using only reliable and recognized sources (please see the below email to Wiki). I have been trying to correct information on the Our Lady of Akita page and was instructed by Wikipedia to use the creator talk page but the page creator is a person whose account is closed.

I am writing to you because you made the last edits replacing the corrections. Unfortunately, as a result the incorrect earlier version is now shown again. Unlike my correction, this incorrect version is not supported by recognized reliable sources of information.

My email to Wiki and [redacted]'s response is below.

Please help me get the correct information on Wiki. Ddionisi (talk) 17:15, 10 May 2016 (UTC) David Dionisi Ddionisi (talk) 17:15, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Dear David Dionisi,

This is a content dispute and we do not resolve content disputes by email. You must go to the article talk page and discuss he issues with other editors there.

Dear [redacted], Thank you for helping me. Please know that I made corrections to the Wiki "Our Lady of Akita" article citing the Vatican, Bishop Ito and Sister Agnes which are the most established, recognized and reliable Our Lady of Akita sources in the world. The Vatican published the rules that were in the 1980s and 1990s kept as confidential in 2012. I provided this information to Wiki and see http://ncronline.org/news/vatican/vatican-publishes-rules-verifying-visions-mary The rules clearly state that a local bishop has full authority to authenticate a Marian Apparition and no subsequent Vatican approval is necessary. Someone on your team is deleting this easily provable established and recognized information and in its place retaining an uncited magazine article. As a result, the Wikipedia article is misleading and suggesting the Catholic Church official position on the Our Lady of Akita miracles has been reversed (in fact they are authenticated by the local Bishop which is all that is required and stands because there has never been an official reversal by the Vatican. This is why the December 2015 National Geographics team communicates correctly that the Our Lady of Akita miracles are authenticated by the Catholic Church and see http://news.nationalgeographic.com/content/dam/news/rights-exempt/nat-geo-staff-maps/2015/11/Virgin_Mary/spread.png). Even the link for the English translation of Bishop Ito's 1984 Pastoral Letter on Wiki is an incorrect translation which is easy to prove by just comparing it with Rev. Yasuda's book that includes this letter and has Bishop Ito's statement that everything in the book is a correct English translation (Bishop Ito spoke both Japanese and English fluently). Please advise me how to proceed. I have already tried to help get correct information on Wiki several times. My multi-hour effort to help correct the errors has been deleted by Wiki. I want the truth to be known and need your advice on next steps (if you can see the earlier work I tried to add, please go to the Vatican and other links which show the most established and reliable sources). Even the YouTube video Wiki currently links to is a YouTube video posted by someone that does not have the copyright to use the video whereas the YouTube Akita and the Fatima Secret documentary is the official and legal version of both the 1990 and 2015 video (the Teach Peace Foundation shot the 2015 video and has the rights for the 1990 video). As far as the deletions on this article Freeman Parkway Bridge, WP:Memorial states "subjects of encyclopedia articles must satisfy Wikipedia's notability requirements. Wikipedia is not the place to memorialize deceased friends, relatives, acquaintances, or others who do not meet such requirements" Duncker is not the subject of the article, the bridge is. If the article were about the individual only, I could see where that would be contrary the guidelines. Neither is the text 'memorializing' the individual, it's simply the bare facts as reported by reliable sources, It's certainly more notable than the uncited graffiti section, and I don't think the article is improved by removing both instead of including both. Thoughts?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.143.225.168 (talkcontribs) 13:15, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

But the proxy is going to insist his death is non-notable (even if I include a billion sources) because the sources are all from the local media. What do I say to that? Sro23 (talk) 13:38, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
It looks like the article has been reverted already. Well, I'm not sure how long that edit's going to stick for, but in the mean time, I've added information about his death to another pertinent article (the high school he went to). Sro23 (talk) 14:12, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
When people are editing for personal reasons, there is nothing you can say to convince them. All you can do is what you've already been doing, namely to explain your position through edits summaries and talk page discussion and to report open proxies as your time and patience allow. As you've noticed, a veteran editor has already reverted; therefore you must have convinced someone your position is valid. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.143.225.227 (talk) 14:57, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Please warn vandals

Hi.

Thanks for recently undoing vandalism on Dazed and Confused (song). In the future, when you undo vandalism, could you please use the appropriate template to warn the user (IP or registered) to stop their behaviour?

There are many different warning templates available to use. Here are some popular ones. Please see their documentation pages for instructions.

Each time we use these warnings they should be placed under the title "==May 2024==" (updated to the current month and year), on the user's talk page. If previous warnings have been given under that title, add the next level warning beneath the others, within that section. Clearly, individual cases must be dealt with as seems fit. If the user has not been actively vandalizing for a few weeks or months, start a new section.

The value of warning is three fold.

  • Firstly: it may be heeded.
  • Secondly: it allows other editors to quickly see if that user has been vandalizing frequently or recently.
  • Lastly: administrators require that warnings have been given before they can or will act against persistent vandals.

If a vandal is on a spree or has reached a level 4 vandalism warning and is currently active, waste no time in reporting them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism.

Thanks again for helping to protect articles on Wikipedia. Happy editing! Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 17:23, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

FYI

Thanks for the thanks on the reverts of our favorite MoS 'editor'. However, I've been checking and this 2600 IP does appear to be undoing Who R U's sockpuppet edits. Most of the time. I'm still suspicious of their obsession with fixing Who's obsession, so we'll keep an eye on all the articles still. Cheers, and thanks for the help!  :) --Ebyabe talk - Opposites Attract ‖ 18:34, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Ok this is really confusing, but I'm actually 90% certain 2600/ is the Who R U? ipsock and ip 2605 is someone else with similar editing habits. For example, look at this edit 2605 made on Christopher Walken from April:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Christopher_Walken&diff=718000583&oldid=717836877. Who R U? didn't start editing until May. Sro23 (talk) 19:16, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't watch this page and don't receive pings. Yes, they are kind of "proxies" (upon a brief look), i.e. rangeblocks won't work, and semiprotection would be a more efficient route. Materialscientist (talk) 08:20, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
The problem is it's not the articles they're attacking, it's Sro23. Whatever article Sro23 touched as part of their patrolling would turn into a revertfest. Do you still advocate semi-protection in this case? I will certainly heed your advice. --NeilN talk to me 13:40, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
This is a standard situation where semiprotection is the best remedy. It can be brief if the disruption is caused only by the maniac, or can be longer if there is a history of vandalism/spam/etc. Materialscientist (talk) 22:10, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Unreliable source?

You said that famousbirthdays.com was an unreliable source on 'Maty Noyes' page, I do not understand what was unreliable about this source. Please could you tell me your reasoning for this. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipediaeditperson (talkcontribs) 19:26, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

I direct you to WP:IRS. The tell-tale signs of unreliable online sources are often a lack of author, lack of credibility for publisher, and sometimes but not always .com, .info, .net open domains. If you read the website's about page, you'll see that under the "CONTRIBUTING TO FAMOUS BIRTHDAYS" section it implies anyone can submit to the site (just like wikipedia) therefore it is not trustworthy. Sro23 (talk) 19:34, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

I understand that it is able to be contributed by anyone, but as you say Wikipedia is the same - it is a bit contradictory to say that a website is not reliable, because that would make Wikipedia unreliable. Also, you cannot just update the website famousbirthdays.com - you can suggest an update, but this has to be reviewed prior to being put on the website, so I feel that this makes it a suitable and reliable source. Would you agree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipediaeditperson (talkcontribs) 20:10, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

But that's the thing, Wikipedia isn't reliable (even if it may contain links to reliable sources). I still don't trust the website because so little is known about who exactly runs it. Why should we believe them? Sro23 (talk) 20:12, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Ok, I dont agree that Wikipedia is unreliable - there are a lot of members and if someone makes a mistake, it is usually picked up by others. Also, as I said, the famousbirthdays website verifies every edit, making it even more reliable than Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipediaeditperson (talkcontribs) 20:32, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Greeku Veerudu

What is the necessity of redirecting it to the director and adding categories?PhysicsScientist (talk) 00:15, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Do you mean Greeku Veerudu (1998 film)? I assume it's because it doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for films, so redirect to its director. And what's wrong with adding categories to redirects? If you think it's not a helpful redirect, you can list it for discussion but please don't blank pages. Sro23 (talk) 00:19, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Doing like this increased the films (which were created) by the director by 1. I just do not like it. What will happen if it is deleted?PhysicsScientist (talk) 12:33, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

How is reinstating an IP warriors edits not vandalism? The IP has been blocked for his malicious edits. If the IP just wanted to comment out the entire page, why would he make any "good" edits? I'm a bit confused. MegaMan1988 (talk) 04:34, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Just because an editor is blocked, does not mean all of their edits should automatically be reverted. The edit was actually constructive (aside from the unexplained commenting out). Blindly reverting every edit from blocked users is not the best idea, especially if it reinstates BLP and copyright violations, vandalism, typos, factual errors, etc. Sro23 (talk) 04:39, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

July 2016

Someone really hates me. I log into literally hundreds of my edits being reverted every day. That's crazy, and in the end I'm only creating more work for everyone else.

I decided I'm going to stop or at least slow down editing for a bit until things cool off. Thank you so much everyone who reverts, protects, blocks, reports, etc. I truly appreciate it. Sro23 (talk) 15:36, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Relax. If he/she/and-or-it isn't reverting your edits, it'll only happen to someone else. There are many eyes watching. Again, relax. It's all good.   Aloha27  talk  15:55, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Edit warriors

Always worth making sure the problem user has been explicitly warned not to edit war, as they may be blissfully unaware that it's ever a problem - just stick a {{uw-ew}} template on their user page. I'll give Wythy the benefit of the doubt on their latest revert as they might have been writing their "determined to conceal these *facts*" edit summary while I was warning them. --McGeddon (talk) 18:20, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

The "professional"

Our favorite editor has returned to her old ways at Ginnifer Goodwin et al. I've requested the Robby Benson page be semi-protected, and that perhaps the Goodwin page be put under pending changes protection. If you want to warn him, feel free. I don't feel it's necessary to edit-war with it over the changes. An admin will do the protecting and likely block the entity. Maybe even a rangeblock. Anyhoo, cheerio. :) --Ebyabe talk - State of the Union ‖ 07:45, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

Editor wondering if you are a robot and some other stuff ;)

Hello Sro23 i am not sure if you are a robot or not but either way would like if you could reply soon. I do not feel in anyway me edit was bias and am the slightest bit shocked that Ukraine even though i am American doesn't have its own segment even though there are picture of Ukrainian vodka being used in the article. I apologise if taken wrongly but am just trying to find a solution to the very obvious mistake which is needed to be fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.164.156.203 (talk) 17:57, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @101.164.156.203: Never mind that- you should play close attention to the messages Sro32 has left you on your Talk Page. You should have been reported for edit-warring, but he is an amazingly forgiving editor. May I suggest though, that you refrain from making another edit to the Vodka article. If you do, it wil likely be interpreted as a continuing of your ethno-centric point-of-view pushing and either he or I will be forced to seek administrative attention. Cheers! -and happy editing. What are your thoughts on this new account that has recently surfaced: Bluebluellllll? I have already gone and reported it as I believe there is enough similarities already present. Also, I am not sure what exactly the project page will do for us in this situation. I usually do my best to act fast when there's a disturbance. AcidSnow (talk)

I took the liberty of leaving a high level BLP warning for a revert you made to this article. We edit conflicted on the revert but you never left a warning on the user's talk page, so eventually I did. Meters (talk) 07:22, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Ah, i see what probably happened. You reverted the minor 2nd bit of vandalism and never noticed the major BLP edit it was hiding. Meters (talk) 07:24, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't even bother warning, I just went straight to AIV, since the account is cleary WP:NOTHERE. It's still not blocked yet though...Sro23 (talk) 07:26, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
I should have checked there I guess. No biggie. I was just touching base since I don't usually leave warnings on someone else's rvt. Meters (talk) 07:29, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

How to revert move changes?

Hi sorry I'm new to all this and trying to correct an error, someone incorrectly moved the SimBin Studios page to the Sector3 Studios page, they should be 2 separate pages as they are 2 completely separate companies.— Preceding unsigned comment added by USteppin (talkcontribs) 13:16, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi. It's okay I understand. What you can do is place the WP:RMCM template on the talk page of Sector3 Studios, requesting it be moved to SimBin, to preserve history. Then a new article can be created for Sector3 Studios. We'll need some reliable sources to verify that the companies have split first however. Once the page moves are sorted out, I can also change the incorrect redirects as well. Sro23 (talk) 14:51, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Spam immediate

{{uw-spam4im}} is a good way to give an immediate final warning. I like the blacklist notice in the template. Do be careful as giving a -4im- warning will cause Huggle to want to send a wp:AIV report and an admin may be reluctant to block for a few warnings. Then again, some seem quite willing to do so. I will explain: I saw the page history and noticed repeated unexplained removals of sourced claims with new unsourced info, so I restored it to the version before the problematic editing began. Please, if you want to make a change, support it with citations. I need to advice that this user Chronus is an dictator in the Portuguese Wiki (No exaggeration), he is known to all users of the Wiki-pt as rude and possessive, preventing all editing in articles where he touchs. Already quarreled with multiple users both Wiki-PT and even here, always wanting to impose his point of view. I read what he wrote... it's delusional horseshit. Been here over ten years and I probably have less article creations than you. Early on, I came across a comment from someone high up in the WMF. He said if content creators all left, Wikipedia could go on for years. Information would gradually go out of date, but it'd still be there. If the vandal fighters all left, Wikipedia would be overrun in a few days by vandals, spammers, and trolls. --NeilN talk to me 00:44, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
I just blocked one of his commonly-used ranges. Hopefully, that will slow him down a tad. ~ Rob13Talk 00:56, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
@NeilN: as well as Sro23, would you mind pinging me when you see Cebr pop up? Based on my looking around, his IP ranges generally have very little collateral damage and long-term blocks should be worthwhile. Looking at his ranges, a lot of vandalism is coming from them that hasn't necessarily been connected with him in the past. Knowing what IPs he uses and how often makes it easier to find and block ranges with little collateral damage to limit the vandalism. Thanks! ~ Rob13Talk 04:06, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

@NeilN: It already exists at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Cebr1979. Feel free to create a subsection for specific blocked IPs/ranges on that page with dates of the blocks. I'll probably add the ones I've done recently to it later tonight (and create the section if someone hadn't already done so by then). ~ Rob13Talk 17:09, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
