Skyscreamer

You could use WindSeeker as a guide. When were the rides announced? Where there any problems that the rides had? What's the deign of the ride? Reception (if available)? Features? I can't really help any further or else I would be doing all the work which I can't. In response to your question you posted on my talk page, yes. Anything in the article that does not have a references needs one or else the article will likely fail the GA review. To help you out, a good thing to do is type in what you are looking for on google. If you don't find anything on the first couple of pages, click on the "more" tab (NOT the top black one, the one under the search bar) and then click "news". When I said to add refs to the installations section, I meant to create a new column and include one ref in each row that supports the info in the table. After that, you could nominate it if you want though the reviewer would probably point out some things that would need to be fixed (there is always room for improvement!). Also, I know I keep mentioning it but you should try to find reviews of the ride to add a reception section (if possible). Do not edit with both your account and an IP

S9000, you've been told this a number of times before: Do not edit with both this account and the IP User:74.131.177.233. It's been quite obvious from the beginning that that IP is you, so you're fooling no one who looks into it, but using both creates the impression to casual editors that two different people are editing. That's deceptive and it's not allowed.

And to answer the question you asked on Luigi2453's talk page, if your IP account is blocked, that block is for the editor (you), not just that particular IP, so you will not be allowed to edit with this account either. Nor can you create another account. You simply will not be allowed to edit at all uintil the block is lifted.

Look, you've asked a lot of people for help, and many of them have extended themselves to assist you. Everyone who does so wants to believe that you are a good faith editor. So, please, stop messing around, always edit with this account, and stop using the IP to make vandalistic edits. If you want to be an editor here, you must behave and follow the rules. Yes, do not use it anymore, especially since it appears you have used it to mark articles for speedy deletion, something you have been told you do not have sufficient knowledge of Wikipedia's policies to do. You have been told that you need to concentrate on editing articles to the exclusion of the other activities that have gotten you into trouble before, but it appears you are using the IP to do those things instead. I'm afraid that if you continue to attempt to be deceptive in this way, you are going to be blocked again, and each block you receive will be for a longer and longer period of time. You should not use it for any purpose, including posting an abandoned/retired template. IP addresses change over time, and someone else might end up with 74.131.177.233 at some point in the future, and it would be confusing for an active editor to appear retired. Your recent comments

I've been following your edits on Wikipedia for a bit now. I admire your eagerness to create new articles and to expand old ones, but I have to admit I'm a bit puzzled about what your motivations appear to be, such as asking about when you can add a userbox after a certain activity is completed.

Yes, Wikipedia editors reward each other for jobs well done. Yes, userboxes give other editors an idea of who you are and what you've done. That said, those are bonuses ... things that go with the main purpose of most everyone here, and that is to build an online, free encyclopedia to share knowledge with others around the world. So, to myself and to many other editors, the goal is the encyclopedia, and the awards are icing on the cake. You appear to be after the awards, with the encyclopedia's improvement being a byproduct. Frankly, that worries me a bit.

I'm going to ask a very bold question, and I would appreciate an honest answer. Why exactly are you here? Are you here to contribute to an online encyclopedia, or are you here to create an online presence for yourself, like a Facebook page?

Hi McDoobAU93, I think you have made some very valid points here but at the end of the day it's easier to just accept that people edit for lots of different reasons, and younger people perhaps show parts of their motivations more easily than older people do. Younger people are taught to measure progress by badges and stars and similar things, so it's no big deal if they quite naturally ask "when does the badge happen?" Older people generally don't see everything in quite such clear demarcations, but... let's remember it doesn't really matter so long as we're all working towards the same end, which Starship9000 has said he is. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:56, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmmmm.... they don't do "ribbons" as awards in the UK (or at least, they didn't when I was at school), although I do remember trying to affix one to my userpage here once. Badges and stars and such are a bit more of an international phenomenon.   • Starship, taking a break means not editing. Instead I see you have been using Twinkle to revert people, and I have had to undo your two reversions as unjustified. One of them you marked as vandalism - which means intentionally doing damage to the encyclopedia - when it was quite reasonable, as a Google search just showed me. Please stop using Twinkle and talk to your parents as people have suggested. It's time to decide ...

Starship, we need to get serious for a moment. You said you would take a break for a while ... you haven't done it. In fact, you've said you want to promote an article before you take the break (sounds a lot like "just five more minutes, mom!" to me). You've now added Twinkle and are making very questionable reverts. I think it's time for a binding decision to be made. Do you plan on taking a break from Wikipedia for a year, or do you plan on staying as an active editor?

If you take the break, I would wish you good tidings and look forward to seeing you after a year. If you decide to stick around, there are critical problems that I think need to be solved and that CAN be solved with some hard work and discipline. Here is what I, personally, would recommend:

  • Editor shall locate a mentor to guide their editing on the project. Editor may not edit articles or talk pages until mentor has been selected. User page edits and user talk page edits are allowed during this process.
  • Editor shall not ask about promoting an article, but editor may assist (with mentor's guidance) in responding to existing comments that will help an article get promoted. Mentor should point out articles in editor's fields of interest that are on verge of promotion or in need of editing assistance as part of the learning process.
  • Editor shall only ask mentor about activities that generate userboxes, barnstars, etc. Mentor shall be charged with giving credit where credit is due and making such awards as deemed appropriate. Awards duly earned should be and will be duly awarded.
  • Editor shall not use Twinkle, Huggle or any other automation tool. The key to learning is doing it the hard way. As a parallel example, if I were a teacher, I wouldn't let a student use a calculator until they had shown they knew addition, subtraction, multiplication and division backwards and forwards.
  • Editor shall not revert or undo any edits except their own. If editor believes a revert is necessary, editor shall seek out their mentor, who will make the decision if the revert/undo is indeed justified, even if revert/undo is made by another editor, and give their findings to the editor.
  • Editor shall always edit while logged in using their account. Any violation of Wikipedia policies on edit-warring or sockpuppetry will result in a forced break in the form of a one-year block from the date of infraction.

I would ask the other editors (Demiurge, Drmies, LadyOfShalott, etc.) who have followed you to offer their suggestions (and to modify my own) for a proper mentorship program, as well. The goal is one that will help you grow as an editor, which I think would help you a lot as you continue through school. And there should (and will) be some awards along the way ... when they're earned.

But you need to decide which of the two alternatives above in this section you want to do. Remember, Wikipedia isn't going away. My suggestion of a one year break was a suggestion... but it now looks as if it's not a suggestion Starship9000 wants to follow. I don't think specifying a minimum one-year block for something potentially as trivial as (yet again) forgetting to log in before editing is appropriate.
I further suggest that someone finds Starship9000 an adopter who runs a lessons-and-tests based course (many such courses include mini-barnstars at the successful completion of each lesson, which may help to meet some of the other needs here). --Demiurge1000 (talk) 17:29, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Starship9000 Adoption

I am willing to take on User:Starship9000 on as an adoptee under the following terms:

  • During the course of the adoption, without my express permission, Starship is not to do any of the following:
    • New page patrolling
    • Article creation
    • Category creation
    • Participating in the deletion process
    • Propose any article for GA or FA
    • Add or remove any tags
    • Use any form of automation (e.g., Twinkle)
  • During the course of adoption, the only pages Starship9000 is to edit are:
    • his talk page
    • my talk page
    • Kudpung's talk page
    • the adoption page
    • the adoption talk page
    • SkyScreamer – but not to propose it for GA status
    • any other changes to articles, but only in article space
    • User:Starship9000 (but not any subpages of it)
  • Starship9000 will receive a barnstar after he successfully completes the first test and the final exam.
  • Starship must receive an 80% or higher on all tests in order to advance to the next lesson.
    • All grades will be determined using the subjective opinion of User:Go Phightins! using the following criteria:
      • A 5/5 demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of the topic in question beyond a reiteration of the definition and provides a specific "real-wiki" example.
        • For the question "What is vandalism?", a 5/5 would look something like this: "Vandalism is any bad-faith edit intended to harm the encyclopedia. For example, changing Chris Christie's weight to 5,000 pounds is vandalism."
      • A 4/5 demonstrates a general knowledge of the topic and may include material directly copied from a policy/guideline/essay or not include an example.
        • For the aforementioned question, a 4/5 would look something like this: "Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. An example would be crude humor."
      • A 3/5 is a simple reiteration of policy, or a partially correct response.
        • "Vandalism is anything that harms Wikipedia"
      • A 2/5 is an answer that is wrong in multiple respects.
      • A 1/5 is an answer that would equate to an Ad Hominem attack were this a DR discussion. In other words, "This question is stupid"
    • If the adoptee disagrees with a grade, he is to first explain why to his mentor. Go Phightins! will then review the answer and explain his reasoning. If Starship9000 still disagrees, he may contact any other user on the List of Adopters or any administrator with whom he's previously interacted on his talk page to review the answer.
    • Should Starship9000 not complete a test with a passing grade, he is to review the material in the lesson, and let Go Phightins! know if he has any questions prior to requesting a new test, which Go Phightins! will generate.
  • During the course of adoption, Starship9000 agrees to log in prior to editing.
  • Should Starship9000 decide to leave adoption at any point, he should contact a new adopter prior to resuming normal editing.
  • Should Starship9000 resume editing without notifying his adopter and abandon adoption without seeking to enroll in a new course, Kudpung (or any other administrator) will use his discretion in determining an appropriate course of action.


  • Starship9000, please review my proposed terms and, if you agree to them, please notify me on my talk page. If you would like to propose modifications, please do so on this page.
  • Kudpung (and any other interested users), should you have any suggestions or if you feel these terms are unreasonable, please either change them or let me know. I would like Kudpung and/or another administrator to "sign off" prior to the adoption commencing.

Conditions

Starship, the conditions set out by GoPhitings are very reasonable. The problem is that although you are enthusiastic and keen to help Wikipedia, your good faith edits are too often wrong. I have been following your issues on here and I was wondering if you have heard of Simple Wikipedia. It looks like you don't want to have to read the complicated rules here, and I understand that. There is a version of Wikipedia that is designed to be less complicated and you might find it easier to participate there. Check out the Simple start page and let me know what you think. Starship, I have deleted this file that you uploaded today. As you were told on your Commons talkpage, it has an incompatible license: the Flickr page from which you took it states top left "all rights reserved". It is therefore not a free image as you stated when you uploaded it, and we cannot have it here. This is a serious legal matter. Please do not upload files unless they are photographs you yourself have taken or you are sure they are free to use for any purpose. In addition, there is a night image of the bridge on Commons already: File:Ponte 25 de Abril at night.jpg, so I have put that into the article. At the bottom of the article you will see under External links a link to the Commons category on the bridge; always check there first, as there is very often already a suitable picture. You may not upload images

I believe this was in the adoption agreement, but if it was not, it is now. You may not upload images to Wikimedia Commons or to Wikipedia itself. This, for example, is obviously not your own work...even if you're claiming it as fair use, which is a questionable argument to begin with, fair use images cannot be uploaded to the Commons. No, I really don't spend much time on the Commons other than to look for images to add over here, but I do know that fair use images are not acceptable on the Commons and since what you uploaded is fair use at best, it can not be there. Ryan Vesey is on a Wiki-Break, but we have been conferring via email; he's the one who brought this to my attention and he's absolutely right. You may not contribute on Commons until you have a better grasp of Copyright, Fair Use, free images, etc. Note: That's a topic that will be covered extensively in Lesson Three of adoption, when you get that far.   • Starship, I have reviewed a decent amount of GAs over the years (OK, well over the months, but it doesn't have the same poetic effect), and I am telling you right now that no article you've worked on that I've seen is even close to GA status. Consequently, all you nominating an article would do is waste the time of a reviewer and yourself. Work on the articles, just don't nominate them for statuses they're not ready to achieve.
  • And on the other point, you are more than welcome to self-impose those restrictions and as a matter of fact the first two were already in the agreement. Starship, I'm going to tell you the same thing everyone else is. You need to do the tests Go Phightins has posted and stay away from everything else. This has been discussed several times, it's not about the Barnstar or userbox. You shouldn't be wanting to nominate an article for GA status just because you want the userbox. I suggest you continue doing the tests and get to know Wikipedia. In regards to Commons, I told you where you can find roller coaster photos. You can't take any photo and claim it's yours, that's a copyright violation.
