Could you upload another variation of this file which would not contain borders? Those lines are sometimes annoying. -- Meow 02:58, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Sure, however, it won't be exactly the same as the bordered image. I forgot what channel I used to create that image with. Supportstorm (talk) 17:25, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
In terms of actually discussing meteorological impact, I believe that as an exception, that removing the border lines in this scenario for the main image would not help, as there would be no indication of the actual intensity, appearance, etc. of Typhoon Haiyan relative to the Philippines at the time at which the image was originally taken. A no-border version would be better uploaded separately to be used on a page such as Meteorological history of Typhoon Haiyan and others where impacts are not as important. Dustin (talk) 17:36, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm uploading a new file to be used in such manners, if that helps any. Supportstorm (talk) 17:40, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
There we go. Supportstorm (talk) 18:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
I think I did request a separate file for some special purposes. Anyway, I appreciate for Supportstorm’s help so much. -- Meow 15:27, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Hey

I was just wondering if you could get a few images together for the 1984-85 SPAC season when you get a chance. In particular i am looking for images of Eric and Nigel of their own, if you could get them together it would be great.Jason Rees (talk) 14:40, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll have it done later today. Supportstorm (talk) 16:16, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

2014-15 "other storms" cyclone season

Hey, what's up? And also welcome back! I just wanted to thank you from your research of additional storms in the 2014-15 SWio and AusR seasons, great job! Although, I will add the other tropical low back in the SWio season and make the unofficial start of the 2014-15 SWio season, if it is OK. I will put it up there right now so you can see it. Also could you please add an information or summery of those storms and put it in the "storms" section since I don't have the source and it will be really proven to other people. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:35, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

I never really left, but thanks (school is less work than I thought). With the SWIO start, it should be when La Reunion first acknowledged the zone of disturbed weather on July 4. Regarding tropical lows that track into the basin, I feel like unless La Reunion tracks it as a ZoDW or TDI it probably should be left out of the basin. However, as may be the case soon, a tropical low may become a tropical cyclone after it left the Aus basin and entered the SWIO. In that case it maybe noted as being active during that time gap. Supportstorm (talk) 06:59, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
I know, it is always school. Lucky for you, you are nearly finishing your school life (I guess) and for me not yet (although I got 3wks left of the school year). Actually, me and Jason Rees discussed about the tropical lows to be included in the SWio basin since it entered the basin and we agreed to put it in an "Other storms" section. Also that since the MFR recognized 3 systems but unnumbered, do we put it in the Other storms section? Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:40, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

You are rude. You reverted almost everything I did in the 2014–15 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season page. -- Meow 18:18, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I did not mean to, however, the same can be said about what you did. Removing the storms I added to the season without anything to back up your reasoning. Supportstorm (talk) 18:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
I have said ‘Weak lows are not officially tropical cyclones by MFR.’ so what you said to me is a false allegation. I still cannot believe how petty you’ve become. -- Meow 19:25, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
What I mean by backing up your reasoning is that you have not provided any support from La Reunion that they do not consider those storms as official. At any rate I have contacted them about the situation and if they say no we will simply remove them. I'm not petty, I am being earnest in my actions until they can be proven otherwise. Supportstorm (talk) 19:38, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
I think it is about time i stepped in here - the question over those lows/disturbances comes down to what do we acctully monitor? Should we be monitoring everything that MFR calls a tropical disturbance or just those that are numbered. Other things to note i okayed the addition of the "Weak Tropical Low" that TCWC Perth monitored in the basin since the BoM does officially monitor the region between 80 and 90E for the purposes of high sea forecasts.Jason Rees (talk) 19:51, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
That is true the METAREA VIII(S) is monitored by both agencies in that area. How should we go about deciding what systems to include? Should we get a consensus of this with the project or wait until I get a response back from La Reunion? Supportstorm (talk) 20:11, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Theres no easy answer to that question but Id be very curious to see what Reunion says, so please forward any response from them to my email addresses.Jason Rees (talk) 23:12, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
As I said before, I am just the guy who helps. I actually agree with Jason Rees and you, Supportstorm. I think it is time our WikiProject to be more advanced now instead of years before and we need new tips. I'll say that we can include 'weak' tropical lows from the AusR basin to the SWio basin (if crossed basin). However, I thought that it is a bit confusing to people about these tropical lows so I would rather put it in an "Other storms" section. Who agrees? P.S Just saying that I am sick today and can't go to school so I may be available sometime today :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:55, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
That does not help much @Typhoon2013: since the specific low did not cross basins it formed in the SWIO. Also you do not have to tell us when your sick or can help out - just do what you can when you can thats what all of us do.Jason Rees (talk) 02:25, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
@Jason Rees: Ok, then. But do we really think we should add in the other storms section? Also since there's a tropical low in the AusR basin and says it Exited basin. I think we need a real debate on this, right?Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:05, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

The template of the 2014-15 AusR cyclone season buttons

Hello again. Since the SHem seasons are already beginning to be active, there are 6 TLs in the 2014-15 AusR cyclone season. Since I'm the guy who sometimes update the template about storm buttons and when I add the 6th TL to the template, it didn't work. Can you fix this please? I've been trying to fix it but it still didn't work. Have a good day and a Merry Christmas. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 07:53, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

Tropical Depression 01 on the 2013-14 SWio cyclone season

Hi. I was wondering that if Tropical Depression 01 formed on October 21 since an anon user says that it formed on October 21, not on October 25. Is this right? Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:34, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

In the season summary, from La Reunion, has Tropical Depression 01 forming on October 21 and dissipating on October 29. However, the first operational warning wasn't until the 25. Go with the best track which has it forming on October 21. Supportstorm (talk) 04:31, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

2015 05U and 06U tracks

Hello again. I was just wondering if you can create the track maps of Tropical Lows 05U and 06U, if alright to you? Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:55, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Oh also, 06U may be hard to find the coordinates for the map, but Jason Rees found the BoM track map from 05U. It's: http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/sevwx/wa/watc20150110_web_summary.pdf . Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:57, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
I don't think I can do much with the map that you gave me; however, I did find the JTWC tracks for both systems. They are rather lazily put together though... Supportstorm (talk) 14:42, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Supportstorm for doing the maps, however, when i get chance to edit the season i will probably be banishing 06U to Other storms since it was a mistake to put it as a full system. I have spoken with Steve Young via email and he will be covering 05U within his track summary for January so when its published we should be ok to use his tracking data afaik. Oh and just as a heads up we have another Land Low over the Kimberley per TCWC Perths TWO.Jason Rees (talk) 16:41, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
As, Jason Rees said. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:55, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

1990 NIO

Hi Supportstorm, I have been playing with the 1990 NIO recently and have managed to get it looking decent, but was wondering if you could design a track map using the BT supplied by the IMD for the other systems section. It would also be great if you could find some decent images of TC BoB 7 & 9. Thanks.Jason Rees (talk) 02:50, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

@Jason Rees: Sorry for the belated response. Are you asking for a separate summary map of the IMD storms or maps for the individual storms? Supportstorm (talk) 19:55, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I dont think we need maps for each individual system in the other systems sections, however, one map containing them all would be great i think. It would also be great to update the overall seasonal map to make sure it covered all of the systems. Regards, Jason Rees (talk) 20:04, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I can make that happen. Thanks for the clarification Supportstorm (talk) 20:12, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the images - as always im grateful.Jason Rees (talk) 22:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Happy that I could help. Supportstorm (talk) 01:25, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi Supportstorm, I have two tasks which I thought i would give too you since your into imagery of TC's. The first is to get several relevant pictures together for the (History of) Tropical cyclone naming article - one might be a print screen of the WMO's naming site while another could be Catarina. The second is too get some pictures for both Judy, Lola and Rae of the 2004-05 SPAC organised. Regards.Jason Rees (talk) 00:58, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I've gathered some images for the article. Tell me if the spacing is fine or that the images are what you wanted. I opted not to get the WMO screen shot since I didn't want to run into any copyright issues. Supportstorm (talk) 13:17, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
You chose some decent pictures there - I would not have thought of using Cobra personally but its a decent and relevant image. The spacing in the first section is appropriate and it would be good if it could be replicated in the second and third sections, which i am happy for you treat as a blank canvas, though i would perhaps suggest Onil 2004 and Alice 1970. Good call regarding the screenshot of the WMO Page and while i would suggest NHC's one as a valid alternative i do not think its that brilliant. Any thoughts regarding the content would be welcome - especially since i am looking to take this to the international community when we next get a lul in activity.Jason Rees (talk) 23:49, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Maysak Geostationary VIS-IR 2015

Just say: Excellent idea of uploading VIS-IR images in one section. I never thought in that. A greeting for you. -- Byralaal - (talk!) 16:38, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I wanted to test it for this storm to see how practical it was and if users were willing to update one file. Supportstorm (talk) 20:04, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

How do you rename images?

Hi and thanks for the site you gave me about uploading TC images (http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/imagery/gallery.cgi) and I'll try using it and future storms. Just today a few a minutes ago, I went to the site and uploaded the gallery version of Cyclone Solo, but when I first uploaded it I didn't know the time, but know I know. As of right now, the image name is 15F Apr 10 2015.png , but I wanted to change the file name to 15F Apr 10 2015 0245Z . How could I do this? Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:31, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

You need to apply to be a filemover over on the commons if you want to do it yourself. Make sure you meet the requirements first which isn't too much work. In the meantime I'll rename it for you. Supportstorm (talk) 06:45, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 22:50, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Would you like to join the topic?

Hi. Just asking if you would like to join the topic: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones#PAGASA only-named storms with JTWC designations? You edit in the PTS articles as well, right? It would be great if you would like to help. Thanks and have a great day! Typhoon2013 (talk) 23:25, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Helo there. i have a problem of your captured picture of Cyclone Pam 2 months ago. the coastlines are seening in there. so please, deleted that coastlines that makes Pam's picture became beautiful. - Nino Marakot (talk) 07:30, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, but that image came from NASA gallery so it is going to have coastline tracing. The image isn't noticeable or worth my time to clone it out. Supportstorm (talk) 20:56, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Okay. Nino Marakot (talk) 00:13, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Favor?

Hey there! I was wondering, if you're bored, if you might be able to get images for two storms in the 2004 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, namely the ones that have infoboxes but no images. Ditto for this one in 2000? Also, by crazy chance, if you might be able to get one of Typhoon Zeb on October 15 near Taiwan? If this is too much, I understand, but you're the best image guy on here. :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:16, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Thank you so much!! The article feels more complete and happy now :) Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 19:57, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
No prob! I'll look into finding images for the other storms you requested. Supportstorm (talk) 21:16, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

South Atlantic track map???

Is a track map necessary to the article: South Atlantic tropical cyclone? I mean, a season summary track map like all other basins at the start of its article? Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:58, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

TS Claudette

Hi there. Can you please be a dear and explain why Claudette dissipated on July 14th and not on the 15th as initially stated? I can't seem to find that info anywhere, and it appears (in my humble opinion) to contradict the timeline, which clearly says that Claudette dissipated on July 15 at 0300 UTC. I am terribly confused, excuse me for being such a bother. 190.148.128.44 (talk) 06:57, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Sure thing. The NHC released a TCR over Claudette on August 17th. The TCR is a post-analysis of a storm and is regarded as a final update of a tropical cyclone; in case you weren't aware of what they are. The TCR states that Claudette was tropical from the period of 7/13 06Z through 7/14 18Z which means that Claudette never reached the 15th as a tropical system. You can review this TCR and others through this link: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2015&basin=atl Supportstorm (talk) 14:58, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch for the info. It was me who posted this, although I didn't realize I was not logged in ;) CycloneYoris (talk) 03:12, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Dujuan's dissipation

Are you sure that Dujuan fully dissipated (or possibly became an extratropical cyclone) at Sept 29? Because according to JMA Weather maps, the last time the TD (which was the former Dujuan) was shown was on 06Z of Sept 30. You can check in the JMA Weather maps right now, but you better be quick. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:38, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

That's the problem. I can't check the weather charts a day from now to prove that Dujuan is the extra-tropical low in the Yellow Sea. Also that data is transferred from the JMA to the public through their text products. So if synoptic texts do not convey the presence of Dujuan it cannot be said that the JMA tracked Dujuan during that time. Supportstorm (talk) 06:03, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Actually you still can check the previous JMA chart in just 24hrs. Me and @Meow: discussed something like this before and I just pinged her just in case. Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:33, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

AVHRR true-color background TC images

Hi Supportstorm. I noticed you uploaded a modified version for this file on Hurricane Gert (1993)'s page. Thank you, it looks much better! I was wondering; is it possible to do the same for this file over at Hurricane Emily (1993)? I honestly know very little about images, so excuse my ignorance! Thanks in advance, Auree 19:03, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do to create an image at the same resolution. Supportstorm (talk) 15:52, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Alright managed to create the image, however I'm not sure if I like the results. Supportstorm (talk) 18:32, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
I think it looks much better, for what it's worth :) Thanks so much! I now know where to look if I ever have other image-related questions~ Auree 19:33, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Request in renaming an image

You can rename images, right? I just recently uploaded an image of a Geostationary image of 26W, and is it ok if you can rename it to 'In-fa Geostationary VIS-IR' IF 26W becomes In-fa by the JMA? Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:24, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Extropical cyclone tracking maps

Hello, I've noticed you are the author of File:Abigail 2015 track.png. I don't know whether you intend to make further maps for these types of cyclones, but thought I'd make a suggestion. The Beaufort scale might be a better choice for its colour scale than Saffir–Simpson. I understand these are made using software, which is perhaps suited to topical cyclones, so I don't know how realistic this option is, other than trying to manually colour the nodes in a basic graphic editor. I would be interested in helping out myself, but the software looks like it may take a while for me to get familiar with. It would be nice to hear your thoughts on it. Regards, Jolly Ω Janner 02:29, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

I don't think it is feasible to use the Beaufort scale for tracks given how course the data must be to represent the lower end of the scale and the intervals between each number are very close together. It maybe better to think of the maps as showing when a low is below gale, gale, and hurricane force. Supportstorm (talk) 03:39, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
What if the scale started at Beaufort 6? That would leave seven classes, the same number of classes used on the map's scale with Saffir–Simpson and its related scale. Jolly Ω Janner 08:24, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
It is possible to keep the current color scheme and start at Beaufort 6. However, to make these tracks I'm using OPC graphics and intensities which follow the below gale, gale, storm, and hurricane force hierarchy. These terms are also used in the Beaufort scale and the UK metarea. So I now do not see any problem with the current color scheme of the maps. All that is needed is to make a template that would replace the Saffir–Simpson legend in the file description to indicate the aforementioned intensity scale. Supportstorm (talk) 14:29, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
I have made a draft in my sandbox Commons:User:Jolly Janner/Sandbox, which shows the scale according to Beaufort. Perhaps this could be a good way of doing it with storms which are only ever extropical? Let me know what you think. It would be nice to get something like this automatically integrated into the master template. Jolly Ω Janner 22:47, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
I really like the templete you made. It is almost exactly what I had in mind. Supportstorm (talk) 23:03, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
I suggested to Jolly that we have the categories Beaufort <7, 8-9 (gale-force), 10-11 (storm-force) and 12 (hurricane-force), rather than just gale and hurricane force, and that we added the beaufort scale to the infobox. On the 2UK and Ireland windstorm season, I manually added the beaufort scale and also created a Beaufort scale small and regular template! Resistme (talk) 12:53, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
There is not a color in the program that could indicate storm-force between the gale and hurricane force intensity. We would have reassigning the established hurricane force color to something higher in the programs color palette. Maybe below gale = tropical depression; gale = tropical storm; storm = category one; hurricane = category five. This might throw off people who are used to seeing hurricane track maps however. Supportstorm (talk) 15:39, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

3 2015 TD tracks

I'm impressed how you make TD tracks in the WPac. However the 3 latest TD tracks that you made, it's not quite right there. I'm talking about the name. They are consecutive TDs (TD 16, 17 and 18 (according to the name and formation)). However it's suppose to be JMA TD 15, 16 and 17 because Jangmi is not part of the 2015 season. So the numbers has to move down one. If you look at the timeline layout and count what number it is, it should be 15, 16 and 17. Jason just wanted to put Jangmi in the timeline FYI. I just wanted to point this out because I just want everything in the right order and sorry for my attitude if it does annoy for you and a lot of people. (:|) Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:26, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

This appears to be an error with counting in my dataset. I skipped eleven for some reason. Thank you for pointing this out :) Supportstorm (talk) 05:38, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Similar here, it is suppose to be JMA TD 33, not 34. Also can you please teach me how to rename images? Just in case I see a mistake in the file name or I update the file name etc. Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:16, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Are you talking about this file JMA TD 33 2015 track.png? Doesn't appear to be any problem with the number order. You must apply to be a file mover at the commons, but let me handle these files myself. Supportstorm (talk) 16:10, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Oh sorry my mistake. You're right this time, it is 34. I thought that In-fa was the 35th that's why. I count from the timeline template that's why and it is a bit confusing because Jangmi is in there, as it is however not counted in the 2015 season totals. Hey, it's great to see you doing images again. Do you think you could work your magic and find an image of Cyclone Bonita on January 19, 1996 when it reached the southern Atlantic Ocean? It crossed Africa from the South-West Indian Ocean, and I think that would be a very historic image. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 01:09, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Just took a look at the system on the 18th and 19th. There's nothing really left of it, just an elongated area of disturbed weather over Angola. I'll have an image ready sometime later today or tomorrow. Supportstorm (talk) 16:52, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Renaming the image...

Hi. Is it alright if you can rename the file "Victor 2015 track" to --> "Victor 2016 track" please? Victor formed in 2016 so the file has to say 2016. Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:21, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Storm track map for Jan. 2016 blizzard?

That system was too complex (multiple centers) and erratic to form a coherent track; at least with the data provided by NOAA. Sorry :( Supportstorm (talk) 04:59, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Track data for UK and Ireland storms

Hello Supportstorm, I was wondering - due to what seems like the removal of your track maps on the 2015–16_UK_and_Ireland_windstorm_season page - if you could point me to where the track information comes from? I have tried searching on various websites that've been mentioned before, but I cannot seem to find anything regarding UK/IRE storms. If you could help, then that would be brilliant, thank you. Dale Hay (talk) 18:57, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

I grab positions from the OPC's unified surface maps located here: http://www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov/. Since the images are in a projection that is compatible with Google Earth, I load them in that and locate the center of low pressure systems. It would be easier if the OPC released their surface maps in text format, but I haven't found any so far with a coarse enough spatial resolution. Anyway, hope that answers your question. It's a pity that the authors of that article weren't welcoming to the tracks. Supportstorm (talk) 20:57, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that you did them manually, I thought the information was (as you suggested) already in some text format (similar to the best track data files for (normal) depressions/storms/hurricanes). Yes, question answered, that's excellent! You've saved me from going crazy trying to find a website that has the information in text format on, hah. Thank you very much. :) Dale Hay (talk) 23:09, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Bonnie's image

Hi. For the image of Bonnie, (Bonnie May 28 2016 2037Z.png), is there for any chance, to make it more larger? More rectangular actually (vertical) like Alex's size. It just looks better, and is the reason why I initially picked the other worldview image I uploaded. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:55, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

It is from the GOES satellite so the resolution is going to be greatly less than the MODIS images. I could trim the edges to make it more rectangular I suppose, however it would stretch the infobox in the article, which I though was not preferable. Supportstorm (talk) 15:10, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

How do you get a image like File:Nuri Nov 02 2014 2314Z.png?

Supportstorm, i want to take a image like you image from Nuri 2 years ago. According to your link of distribution, it was on the Naval Research Laboratory. Can you give me a link? - Nino Marakot ( talk ) 12:17, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Like this? Supportstorm (talk) 04:31, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes, but colored. How? - Nino Marakot ( talk ) 09:36, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
I colored it myself, however, I am not going to give away how I do so. It will make my future contributions with these images obsolete. Supportstorm (talk) 18:04, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Trackmap generator thing

Hi. I am planning to help in making storm tracks for the project. So do I have to make a GitHub account? And what code does it uses? (html etc) Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:21, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Ok so far I have already signed up in GitHub and I am in here (as what it says in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Tropical_cyclones/Tracks here). So in the site in GitHub, I clicked the green 'Clone or Download' button in the right side of the page. Am I doing it right so far? Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:33, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Before you even download the track program, depending on the operating system you have, you may need to download extra software. If you are using an Apple OS or Linux system you can run this program without much else needed. If you are using Microsoft Windows you will need to install Cygwin. Btw this program is ran in a Unix like environment so if you are not familiar with shell or bash commands this will seem really foreign to you. It took me a few years to understand how Unix worked to the point I could run this and other programs. Supportstorm (talk) 16:23, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

JMA Weather Maps

Thanks for your work adding in data from theJMA Weather maps, however, i would like to know where you are getting weather maps from as i want to develop a reference for them and verify the data. Regards.Jason Rees (talk) 10:18, 29 July 2016 (UTC) Jason Rees (talk) 10:18, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

JMA weather maps It's amazing that for all the time that I have been working on my dataset for the West Pacific I hadn't run across this webpage. Bi-daily JMA weather maps starting from 1883 through near present. Supportstorm (talk) 15:35, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Nice - However, since it is Digital Typhoon, I would urge you to be careful and use the JMA BT dataset over these maps where there is conflict. Also don't forget we carefully apply classifciations retrospectively, with the Australian TCIS and the SSHWS used at various times even though they were not developed until the latter part of the 20th century. Will work on developing the reference once I am a bit more familar with the data set. I am also pinging @Hurricanehink: as he has recently been working on the older seasons and would love to get his hands on this data im sure.Jason Rees (talk) 20:34, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

Cat1??

Hey, there. I just want to say thank you so much for a great for so far for updating seasonal track maps. However for the 2016 PTS season summary map, you updated that Mindulle reached Cat1 intensity, which in reality it didn't. Could you fix this in your next update please?? Otherwise if there was a source that Mindulle reached cat1 intensity, just tell me. Thanks so much. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:51, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

The JMA showed Mindulle reached 65 knts 10-min sustained before landfall. This roughly equates to 70 knts 1-min so it did reach cat-1 strength, however the JTWC disagrees. The JTWC analyzed Mindulle with 50 knts at the time. But the land station data recorded when Mindulle made landfall on Japan supports the JMA's analysis, with typhoon force winds sustained. So I favored the JMA during the track creation. I'll revert it later for continuity reasons, but I would like a more accurate data to be presented. Supportstorm (talk) 02:44, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

2010 track map and a consideration

I just recently found out that the 2010 PTS track map had been updated to a better one and thank you so much for that. But there are a few things about it, 1) Why is Domeng's track not in there? (I know it's only a PAGASA storm, but it's still a TC) and 2) Apparently in the map, there was a TC that had developed east of Japan. What storm was that? Because I can't find that storm in the article.

I also wanted to make a consideration that we should still continue adding JMA TDs (or only-PAGASA storms) in the season track map, because as what I said, they're TCs too and a part of it. If so, is it alright if you could do the same for the 2013 and 2014 track map summaries? Both of them do not contain the JMA TDs. Thanks so much. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 23:21, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

I only add storms tracked by JMA/JTWC. Because I, and along with all other major agencies besides PAGASA, considered Domeng to have never been a tropical cyclone. The JMA tracked it as a weak area of low pressure the entire time.
That depression was missed by the editors when it was active it appears. The depression was on weather maps from October 7 through 8. Link here:[1]. It will need to be added to the article. I'm in the process of updating all the track maps, so in due time I will get around to the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Supportstorm (talk) 00:14, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Ok, thanks so much. You are such a hard-working editor! :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 22:24, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you :) Supportstorm (talk) 21:54, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

TD track map request

Hi, again. Could I please ask to create a track for the two TDs that formed with Meari (JMA TDs 42 + 43)? Especially for TD 43, I am planning to make an article about it. Thanks so much! Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:52, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

METAREA text + 2016-17 AUS summary track?

Hi again. In this edit, you stated about MATAREA text and surface analysis. I just wanted to know what source do you use so I can place in pressures for other TLs from other seasons. Also if possible, or if you have time, maybe to start adding in the 2016-17 AUS summary track as we already have 3 (or 4) TLs. Thank you so much. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 02:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

The WMO METAREA identifier for Australia is AMMC. This is an archive of advisories where information about the tropical lows are located. Also if you go to the BoM weather chart archive portion of their website you can track low pressure readings from there. I think the METAREA text I link to above also includes wind estimate for low pressure areas, however I'm not certain if it's a forecast or an analysis of winds. The tracks in that basin are usually handled by user Keith Edkins, but I'll see about recovering track data for the tropical lows when I have some free time. Supportstorm (talk) 05:47, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
Ok, thank you! Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:04, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello ST

Can you help me update the best track of the December Vietnam Tropical Depression ? , thank you so much. Huy Trương Salvatore - Talk 15:16, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

The track probably won't be available for another couple months. I'll update the track as soon as I have the data for it. Supportstorm (talk) 17:05, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

TD duration again

Hi. I'm sorry but one more time about the TD durations again like we talked last year. So if the JMA shows a TD weaken to a LPA and upgrade it again to a TD in thei next advisory, then it's a new TD. Because what we're seeing now is another scenario with 01W. As of 06Z, it is now the 3rd time the JMA had classified as a TD. Someone has talked to me about it that it's the same system but I don't know. I talked to you about this because you were the one who suggested this. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:31, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

It is not if the JMA tracked 01W as a low pressure area intermittently because the JMA defines a low pressure area as having no defined low level circulation. This is the reason in best tracks the low pressure area stage of a typhoon is excluded. Supportstorm (talk) 15:13, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
Since the JMA have not dropped Auring yet and its still tracked on NRL as Auring - we will track it as Auring and see what comes back in BT.Jason Rees (talk) 21:35, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

@Hurricanehink:, @Cyclonebiskit:, @Jason Rees: I need administration help dealing with Meow. This user has circumvented the image I created with an "optimized image" duplicate. I'm so tired of this happening every single time I have a problem with her. Supportstorm (talk) 16:34, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Missing TDs

Hi, Supporstorm and I see that you are helping find the missing JMA systems in the 1980 PTS article and thanks for that. I already did seasons from 1992. But I wanted to ask what source did you use? I use digital typhoon and watch the PTS animations on YouTube for my sources. I just wanted to know if your source may be easier to read or something because I will feel really stupid if there was a source containing the TDs in a page instead of browsing through nearly 365 pages to find missing TDs in 1 season. Typhoon2013 (talk) 11:15, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Haha, none that I know of, I have to go through the same years worth of weather charts to locate the depressions. Supportstorm (talk) 14:16, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

2016 JTWC BT tracks

Hi, Supportstorm. Is it alright if you could update the 2016 tracks because the JTWC has put out the BT for it. I'm sorry but I'm just excited :P. Thanks so much. Typhoon2013 (talk) 04:37, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

I want to wait until the next IBTrACS update to upload the best tracks for the West Pacific season. I've already updated the North Indian season with JTWC data however. Supportstorm (talk) 17:23, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
Oh ok sure thing, I can wait. Also one more thing (I don't want to start another once because the past convos were from me), could I request to merge the file of Nanmadol 2017-07-03 0220Z.jpg to Nanmadol 2017-07-03 0215Z.jpg? Someone just made an image of the wrong time. Thanks, and if possible, could you teach me how to merge/redirect (not move) images? Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:02, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Maria image

Hey and thanks for uploading an image of Hurricane Maria much closer to peak. Although, is there by any chance if you could adjust the size of the image, like make it rectangular like the other images? The image right now is more of a square. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 21:46, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Help with images

Hello Supportstorm! I'm trying to remove the gridlines from tropical cyclone images (specifically Hurricane Danielle) so I can make better versions of said images. Do you know how to remove the gridlines? -CooperScience

Depending on where you found the image you can usually get a gridless image. If it's from NRL you can find the source image in the atcf folder. If you don't have that option or don't want to process the satellite data yourself you can use the marquee tool in a photo editor to stretch pixels over the grid. This only works if the grids are perfectly straight. Supportstorm (talk) 02:24, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Track maps for 1979-80 AUS

I cannot tell where you're getting your track data for the maps there because a number of your maps seem to be in blatant contradiction to JTWC's published best tracks. For example, Amy is shown only as peaking at Category 3, not 5, in its JTWC best track. If you were converting from 10-minute to 1-minute using BoM, that is prohibited as original research.--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:51, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

I'm not. Data is from Charles Neumann. He was a researcher at the NHC who put together a more comprehensive dataset of southern hemisphere TC. All values are in 1-min Supportstorm (talk) 21:14, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Then at the least you need to state that in your image description template instead of pointing to the JTWC. Also, @Jason Rees: I doubt we got consensus to deviate from JTWC. —Jasper Deng (talk) 04:33, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
That plot was updated awhile ago and I guess I failed to update the template I was using at the time. I've discussed this with the project several times, so it not like I haven't talked about deviating away from using JTWC. There are faults in strictly using their dataset for track making. Supportstorm (talk) 06:38, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
If you have discussed this before, link please.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:05, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
Here's a discussion I remember having [2]. It's been four years now. Given the age of the discussion I wouldn't mind if you wanted to reopen it with the current members. I'll just need some time to put something together if so. Supportstorm (talk) 08:13, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
The biggest problem is that to the best of my knowledge the JTWC BT Data in the SHEM for anything pre-1980-81 is not JTWC BT Data but is what we would call RSMC data these days. As a result i wonder if the JTWC DB is reliable before 1980.Jason Rees (talk) 00:15, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Hey there! Thanks for all you do here on Wikipedia. Is there any chance you could add track maps for that season? Thanks if you can. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:27, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Certainly, I'll be working on it. Supportstorm (talk) 21:58, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Raja

Hi Supportstorm, I was wondering if you could create an image similar to this one of Cyclone Raja/Sally interacting with each other or Raja interacting with Fiji please.Jason Rees (talk) 11:57, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey there Supportstorm! Is there any chance you could help out Jason Rees (talk · contribs) with an FAC of his. Do you think you could find (or produce) an image of Cyclone Raja and Cyclone Sally on December 25 or 26, 1986. The two storms were active and interacted with each other, so it would be nice for both of their articles to have that image of the two of them. Is that doable? If so, many, many thanks! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:20, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Lol, I didn't see JR's comment there. Merging threads! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:23, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
This is going to be tricky. GMS-3 had a good view of the two systems, however I don't have access to pre-1998 full resolution data. JMA is wanting people to pay to have access to archive satellite data and I'm not aware of any alternate data sources. GOES-6 only got Sally. So my last source is AVHRR at 4 km resolution. The image was captured on December 25 at 18:50Z and captures both cyclones. Supportstorm (talk) 18:32, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
If you are happy with the AVHRR image then im happy.Jason Rees (talk) 20:16, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Questions about Using the Trackmap Generator

Dear Supportstorm,

I am an artist in the US and trying to utilize hurricane tracks as overlays on top of photographs of landscapes that are vulnerable to climate change.

You are listed as a current user of the track map generator on the WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tracks page.

I hope you could answer a few questions for me:

1. Can the track map generator create vector layer files of the hurricane tracks or only bitmap files (i.e. jpg or png files)? 2. Can the generator create graphic files without the map in the background? 3. How large of a resolution file can be created if they are bitmap images?

thank you!

Spetrane (talk) 03:25, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Spetrane

1) The track generator cannot create vector images such as svg or shapefile, it only outputs png. I'd use IBTrACS shapefiles with a GIS program if you need a vector format image to work with.
2) You can create transparent track png images if you create a blank transparent png in the same dimensions as the original background map and replace it in the data folder.
3) There are memory restrictions on how large images can be depending on how large the background image you feed it is. This may be different if you run a 64-bit terminal, however I use 32-bit cygwin terminal for the program and it will run out of memory at a high enough res. If you create an image using the transparent method above you may get some very high resolution transparent images. I just made a 20,000x12,361 (1.02 mb) image without a problem.
If you need any more info I'd be happy to answer to the best of my knowledge. Supportstorm (talk) 04:14, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Article of the month, by Jason Rees

History of tropical cyclone naming - The practice of using names to identify tropical cyclones goes back several centuries, with storms named after places, saints or things they hit before the formal start of naming in each basin. The credit for the first usage of personal names for weather systems is given to the Queensland Government Meteorologist Clement Wragge, who named tropical cyclones and anticyclones between 1887 and 1907. This system of naming fell into disuse for several years after Wragge retired, until it was revived in the latter part of World War II for the Western Pacific basin. Over the following decades, various naming schemes have been introduced for the world's oceans, including for parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The majority of these lists are compiled by the World Meteorological Organization's tropical cyclone committee for the region and include names from different cultures as well as languages. Over the years there has been controversy over the names used at various times, with names being dropped for religious and political reasons. For example, female names were exclusively used in the basins at various times between 1945 - 2000 and were the subject of several protests. The names of significant tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Australian region are retired from the naming lists and replaced with another name, at meetings of the various tropical cyclone committees.

Storm of the month and other tropical activity

Cyclone Fani was an extremely severe cyclonic storm that made landfall in Odisha, India on May 3. The storm achieved peak intensity as a near Category 5-equivalent cyclone with 3-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), 1-minute sustained winds of 250 km/h (155 mph), and a minimum central pressure of 937 hPa (mbar). Fani caused over $1.8 billion (2019 USD) in damage in India and Bangladesh and killed at least 89 people.

Since the last newsletter, twelve systems have formed.

  • Southwest Indian Ocean
In the Southwest Indian Ocean, Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in Mozambique approximately 1 month after Cyclone Idai, causing widespread flooding and destruction. Overall, Kenneth killed at least 52 people and caused more than $100 million in damage. Additionally, Tropical Cyclone Lorna formed over the eastern portion of the basin in late April and dissipated in early May without affecting land.
  • Australian Region
In the Australian Region, cyclones Lili and Ann formed in early May and both affected land. No deaths were reported, although Lili caused moderate damage in the Maluku Islands and East Timor.
  • South Pacific
In the South Pacific, a tropical depression formed in mid-may, but failed to intensify and dissipated a few days later.
  • South Atlantic
In the South Atlantic, Subtropical Storm Jaguar formed in late May and lasted for approximately two days before becoming extratropical.
  • Western Pacific
In the Western Pacific, three weak tropical depressions existed during the first half of May.
  • North Atlantic
In the North Atlantic, Subtropical Storm Andrea formed on the same day as Jaguar, but failed to intensify and dissipated on the next day.

  • The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began on May 15.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season will begin at 2:00 AM EDT on June 1.
  • The Central Pacific hurricane season will begin sometime after 12:00 AM HST on June 1.

Editorial for welcoming new users, by Hurricanehink

Every year, editors new and old help maintain the new season of season articles. The older users are likely used to the standards of the project, such as how to Wikilink and reference properly. Newer users might make mistakes, and they might make them over and over again if they don't know better. If anyone (who happens to read this) comes across a new user, please don't bite, because with enough pushback, they'll decide that this group of editors is too mean, and unfun. This is all a volunteer project; no one can force anyone to do anything. We're all on here because of our love of knowledge and tropical cyclones. If you find someone new, consider using the official WPTC welcome template - Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Welcome.

I also encourage that if you know any tropical cyclone researchers, please speak up and try recruiting them to edit. Veteran editors can't keep editing forever. Life gets busy, and the real world beckons!

WikiProject Tropical Cyclones: News & Developments

  • An awards program for the project began on May 31. It involves 25 levels that may be gained by earning points for completing various actions such as getting good or featured articles. Additional awards will be added in the future.
  • As of this news letter, there are more articles ranked a good article or better (1317) than articles ranked B-class or worse (1272), for the first time in the project's history.
  • Every Atlantic hurricane season from 1945 to 2007 is rated at least a GA. That is an impressive feat, and an incredibly body of work among many editors.
  • Cyclone Raja became the 150th featured article in the project. Thanks to all of the editors and their tireless edits for writing 2.7% of all of Wikipedia's featured articles.
  • In the 24 hours after Hurricane Michael's TCR was released, the article on the hurricane was edited 82 times by 18 different users.
  • In March 2019, the most popular article in the project was Cyclone Idai, viewed 231,969 times during the month. The generic cyclone was 2nd most popular, with 131,080 views. In 3rd place was Hurricane Katrina with 112,283 views. Included in the top 20 were the 2018 and 19 Atlantic hurricane seasons, hurricanes Michael, Florence, Irma, Maria, and Harvey, and the 1896 Cedar Keys hurricane, which was TFA on March 20th.

Current assessment table

Assessments valid as of this printing. Depending on when you may be viewing this newsletter, the table may be outdated. See here for the latest, most up to date statistics.
As of this issue, there are 150 featured articles and 69 featured lists. There are 142 A-class articles, but that number is subject to change, depending if we mandate that all A-class articles have an A-class review first. There are 956 good articles, meaning it is possible we get to our 1000th GA by the end of the year. There are only 61 B-class articles, perhaps because because most articles of that quality already passed a GA review. There are 350 C-class articles, 720 start-class articles, and 141 stub-class articles, with 29 lists and 8 current articles. The number of lists may decrease further as the "Tropical cyclone X" articles continue to be reclassified as set index articles. These figures mean that nearly half of the project is rated a GA or better - including the lists/current/future articles, there are 1272 articles that are below GA status, versus 1317 that are GA or better.

Disambiguation link notification for June 19

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of United States tornadoes from January to March 2019, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Newport, Florida (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

2016 Atlantic HURDAT

I just noticed that 2016 is not updated with HURDAT2 data, considering the last update was April 4 of 2017 and most of the HURDAT2 data was added to the season images of the 2010s decade in July. Mind updating 2016 when you get the chance? --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 01:05, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

I went over 2016 when I was correcting maps, did so again just now. If the map wasn't updated that means that there were no changes to be made. They are the same as presented in current HURDAT2. Supportstorm (talk) 01:40, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Satellite question.

Is it possible to archive satellite imageries from the satellite GMS 1 - GMS 4? Thanks. --SaiTheCyclone (talk) 15:54, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

OPC data

Where do you get them? HSFEP1 warning can't tell their exact location. Regards, 👦 11:15, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

I recommend using official tracks when in best track. Regards, 👦 11:26, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
The OPC data is used for extra-tropical phase when a storm moves into an area outside of JMA's responsibility in the Pacific or operationally for Atlantic systems. The data is from weather maps or high resolution bulletins and is valid for the areas I described. OPC data isn't used if other track data is available. Supportstorm (talk) 18:09, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
No replies, i see. How about this map? Maybe it's easier. (https://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov/ncep-charts/new_charts/201710/20171023/pacw.sfcanal.12.2017102315.gif) Regards, 👦 09:23, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Listen there's no "magic" about getting data from OPC maps. I either download the maps they provide through their website or I georeference the NOMADS charts. Either way gives a map you can plot in GIS software. Also your spamming of my talk page needs to stop. Supportstorm (talk) 14:06, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

JMA

Learnt how to georeference the OPC maps (OpenCPN). And a question. How do you know that JMA data is just a low until later (2014 Kammuri)? Regards, 👦 09:52, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Both the JMA and OPC depict the extra-tropical remnants occluding and dissipating at the end of its best track near 180E. Supportstorm (talk) 12:55, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
If you were talking about the beginning of the track the JTWC considers it a disturbance until 2014-09-24 18Z. Supportstorm (talk) 00:56, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
And the meaning of this? Lol (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Onyok_2015_track.png) Regards, 👦 09:56, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Flores image

Hey there Supprtstorm. I was curious if there was a satellite image of Flores on the 29th, or if it was over land by that point. I was wondering if that image would be any better. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:15, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

The April 29th 16Z IR image of Flores has it located between Tenggara and Sumba after landfall. I think I got confused with the dates the dataset uses. The image I uploaded is likely on the 29th around 5-7Z. There's no date stamps for the individual passes and I'm matching position on satellite with the closes in the best track. As far as quality, unfortunately that's the best available unless NASA or NOAA digitizes the original swath negatives, if they exist. Supportstorm (talk) 20:24, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. Unfortunately BoM doesn't have great tracking data for the 29th (they skipped a few positions). This storm is frustrating how little info there is on it. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:59, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

How?? Regards, 👦 07:19, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Fletcher

According to the BoM BT, Fletcher reached 35 kt winds. Why is Fletcher a low when the BT clearly stated 35 kt winds? Regards, 👦 08:30, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
