Editathon advice

Hello SusnW! The library I am interning at is having an editathon fairly soon and I was wondering if you had any insight that you could share as to how to create a "project page." @Amcdougal: I am still learning this system as well. Usually what I find helpful is to copy information I found useful from someone else's work. So, I looked at one of the meetups that happened last month for Women's History Month. Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Women in the Arts 2015, which led me to here Wikipedia:How to run an edit-a-thon. Looks like the first step is to create a meet up page. I honestly don't know how to do it but if you get stuck, there are lots of editors we can ask. SusunW (talk) 17:22, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Susun, Montanabw, and Amcdougal. I would love to talk about editathons!

• Do your homework and sort out: venue, start time, end time, facilitator/host if any, security?, refreshments?, childcare?, swag?, etc.
• Create an event page. For example, this was last editathon I facilitated. But for sure, check out other editathon/meetup pages and copy/paste so that your event page is as unique as you want it to be. And, of course, others will probably subsequently edit it, too.

1. Editathon attendees like redlinks, so see if you can curate some articles which are pertinent to your theme.
2. Check out Commons and see if there are any photos which would be pertinent. Add them to the event page with redlink photo captions.
3. Put in for a [[1]].
4. Add the event to the Meetup Calendar so that it is viewable here.

• Promote the event:

1. Create FB page
2. Tweet about it
3. Talk about it on various applicable lists.
4. Using User:MediaWiki message delivery, create and send out invites to those who are in the geographic area
5. If you're aware of a superuser who'll be attending, contact them before the event and see if they're interested in assisting newbies. But be prepared for them to just want to socialize and edit.

• Day of:

1. Signage
2. Signin sheet
3. Introductions and any ground rules
4. Provide login/password information for attendees
5. Provide twitter info: hashtag and @
6. Do you have an editor (admin?) who can create user accounts if the newbie needs help?
7. Suggest group photo for those willing to be photographed. Add to Commons with appropriate attribution.
8. Add Outcomes (pages created or worked on) in the Outcomes section of the meetup page
9. Relax and have fun and chat and tweet and edit
10. Thank the editors for participating as they depart

That might be a place to start. I notice you have done a lot of female politicians, also good list. I have done quite a few native women. I am positive that there are native women who have led tribes that are not on wiki. And ones that are that we need photos for. Thank you all for your help! This is our first internal edit-a-thon here at the Edmon Low Library, so we are very excited! I have constructed the bare bones of the meetup page here if anyone wants to take a look and make suggestions. Also, I am having trouble adding our event to the Meetup Calendar - mainly because my Wikipedia skills are far from refined at this point. Rosie is on vacation, so it might have been sitting for a while. @Amcdougal: It also occurs to me that you might ask Missvain‎ (Founder of WikiProject Women artists and co-founder of WikiProject Public art) if she could weigh in. She helped me save a woman during Women's history month and I have noted on her page that she is often being thanked for adding artwork to articles. Since few of the Native Artists have artwork on their pages, she might 1) know some valuable sources that are usable or 2) have people who would be willing to participate in your editathon. (By the way, all you have to do to respond/notify someone without going to their page is type double brackets {{ }} and type inside them either ping|Username or yo|Username. @Amcdougal: found another page List of Native American artists that has an Oklahoma Cherokee artist, needing an article ... Tana L. Washington. But it's also a good page to bookmark in the event that you have an orphan tag you can add the artists to this list. That led me here List of Native American artists from Oklahoma yet another list you can tag orphans to or complete articles for. I have an article, Bazy Tankersley, nominated for a Featured article here: [2] one good way to learn about the FAC process is to start as a reviewer of others. Because you are interested in women's history and the southwest, you have some good background to review Bazy. Many of the reviewers focus on technical aspects (as the ones there now do) but we also need people to comment on style, flow and content. I think you'd do well. Feel free to pop over and comment. The general criteria is explained here: [3]. Trust me, you WON'T hurt my feelings, I've been in on 17 FAC reviews directly and another 4-5 indirectly. I'm used to the gauntlet. She is part of The Wikipedia Library's Interns program, and is doing a really great job: just want to make sure the articles also get visibility (pageviews have been a bit sparce: for example or another). Its just making sure everything is connected. And by your contribution history:you are not a newbie anymore! That makes you a Novato and nearly a Grognard. Hi @SusunW:: You should start signing up for accounts at WP:TWL/Journals! We are working in exceptions for highly effective newer users, and you would more than qualify. Sign up for what you are interested in, and if there are a lot of accounts, you would probably get access (its up to the discretion of the particular account coordinator, but make sure to describe both your need and DYK work, and it should be effective: you are becoming quite a successful content creator!) Thank you Sadads! OMG, I went there, so many choices, swoon. Where to begin! How many can I have? You have no idea how hard it is to access some of this stuff from outside the US. But I shall be judicious. I shall start with Newspapers. Those have many references to my Mexican women and would be very helpful for my Native American ones as well. If I can have more than one, then the question is Pelican or Questia. At least with Jestor I can access three articles at any time, and if I do women in groups that might be mentioned in a piece I maximize that 14 day limit on there. Can I do more than 1? Each partnership is managed by a separate volunteer: but once you have approval for one and use it, it builds a good reputation and you can point back to your experience in applications. I would suggest applying for the ones you need most: Highbeam seems to be used much more frequently then Questia and I would highly recommend WP:Project MUSE: it has more of the specialist Cultural studies journals than JSTOR (though JSTOR has a lot more of the high profile ones). 23:17, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Unfortuantely, with Pelican, we only got a limited set of their ebooks, as an experiment: they haven't released very many; MUSE is by far a more generalist source (as is JSTOR). If you are looking for general reference our WP:OUP donation is pretty good. Sadads (talk) 23:44, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

articles marked for deletion

I reworked two articles marked for deletion. Anna Margaret Ross Alexander and Marion Harvie Barnard. Don't know the author, only noted that they were both women and I think they are able to be saved. The original articles were pretty poorly written, the one on Alexander said in the lede she was a philanthropist PTA mom who raised her kids. o.O but still, there was clearly enough meat there to rework and show notability. I kept seeing in my minds eye one liners of sports figures who played half a season and have 2 sentences in Wiki. She is an academic, working in a fairly new field... women, technology and aging. Prolific writer. Issue is that the creator has used mostly the woman's own work as sourcing. I am working on resourcing now, but any help would be appreciated. She has been a visiting professor in both Italy and is working on a joint project with Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol, of Catalonia Spain. Maybe there are foreign language supports for her? Article is Kim Sawchuk. Her work appears important to me. All women age and in this day and age, cannot survive without technology. I reworked the article on Kim Sawchuk. She appears to be a major researcher in the field of aging and technology. Hard to find traditional news sources, but I was able to use University News outlets and conference notices as well as a limited number of book sources which she had not contributed to. If someone speaks French, it may be that articles can be found in the French press, as she lives and works in Montreal. I barely speak Spanish, French is beyond my abilities. Totally agree. In some cases they seem to have a mentor who shows them the ropes. In others, they just seem to be dropped in and unfortunately, unintentionally make a mess of things. It is very hard to learn how to use the system. Mentors are crucial. I still feel like a virtual novice. @SusunW: Another well-spotted one here Susun. I'm glad to see the article has now been expanded with a host of sources. As for looking for French-language material on Kim Sawchuk, I think it is very unlikely there will be anything of interest. I know Montreal well (lived there for five years) and can assure you that the faculty of Concordia University are very seldom covered by the French-language press. I tried in vain to find info on her origins, including her place and date of birth. I see here that in 2012 she referred to her granddaughter Laure. I also found a highly detailed cv about 20 pages long here but the earliest date is 1978.--Ipigott (talk) 09:13, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Interesting indeed. I shall see if I can work with some of them. Depends on if it becomes a language issue. I added Deema Shehabi to the Palestinian list since she is of Palestinian heritage, though born in Kuwait. The book she just published sounds totally fascinating. On another note, did you know that there were Finnish and Danish settlements established in Misiones Province, Argentina? I ran across a reference while trying to save a file on Patricia Ocampo to a Finn who wrote a Spanish-Finnish dictionary (what is it with me finding dictionary writers?) and that made me curious. There are articles on Finnish Argentine, Danish Argentine, and Swedish Argentine who knew? I love learning. SusunW (talk) 07:02, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, one of the early Danish Argentine heroes was Hans Fugl. See more in Spanish here and in Danish here. The article Juan Fugl could be considerably expanded. The Danes have been all over. See for example Danish India, Danish Gold Coast, Danish West Indies and Danish colonial empire. Going further back, there is considerable evidence that the Norsemen (Vikings from what is now Denmark and Norway) were early occupants of what is now Ukraine and Russia, giving Russia its name from "Rus" which comes from row boat. They also discovered North America around the year 1000, calling it Vinland. So that's your potted history lesson for this morning!--Ipigott (talk) 08:49, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Patricia Ocampo

Does anyone know if there is a program to stop links from going dead or a bot which will archive/cache what was there when the article was written? It seems to me that the proposal to delete this file Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Patricia Ocampo is based primarily on some sort of personal vendetta, but the links were all dead as well. I reworked it and was able to find 19 of the 20 schools she founded to date. But, would not want the links to die again. Was a substantial re-write but I think she easily meets GNG now, but only if the references can be maintained. @Montanabw:, @Rosiestep: SusunW (talk) 23:01, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Wayback links are the best, they will be preserved and not go dead. If you worry that a source is iffy, you can even request that wayback archive the link the day you visit it. (though they won't archive news links from sites with no archive tags) Montanabw^(talk) 21:49, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

I had to create several at Bazy Tankersley as the originals had gone dead by the time I got to FAC. Okay, so I went there. I clicked on every single link in the article. Most of them were archived, but 6 of them were not, so I saved them. Do I need to input the archived links or just do that if they go dead? Seems like if you have to do that when inputting every link it would be a tedious process. Another interesting life story appears to be that of writer, professor, feminist Alaíde Foppa... born in Spain, exiled in Mexico, kidnapped/disappeared/tortured/presumed murdered in Guatemala. Horrible! Just about everything I could find on her is in Spanish, and my Spanish translation skills aren't as strong as yours, so mentioning these newspaper articles: here and here and here and here. Sounds fascinating. Going to finish up a piece on David Williams, a Native American artist I knew as a kid. He was a major player in the art world in the 1970s and then died young of diabetes complications. But then I will hop on Foppa. SusunW (talk) 13:03, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Not done with it. Haven't touched the aftermath yet, but wanted to get what I had there. Oldest son only found out about his biological dad at her disappearance. Don't know if that is relevant to her story, but clearly is to him. Youngest daughter is one who relayed story to her siblings. They sought international attention, to no avail. Yup; no rush to nom it as there are still a few days. Very interesting about the older son. Archiving

You mentioned you didn't know how to archive. I'm going to archive some of my talkpage now. You can follow my edit history to see what I do manually. You'll also need a brown archive box on your talkpage. Take a look at mine, top right hand corner, and you can just paste it on your talkpage.
